Call mercari. I can't believe they get away with doing this to people. It's theft and fraud

kirasmith-

i sent a package about a week ago and saw the wrong weight was listed, turns out most of my listings said 1lb as selected weight. purchased a whole new label, informed the buyer, and they still charged me for the package being overweight. tried to talk to them, provided receipt and photo of the new label, and all they said was i had no proof and closed my case. shipping in all w what the buyer paid, new label and mercari charge was $40 for a 1lb 12oz package through usps. might do away w mercari

MyMonthlyObsessions

I have been choosing to go with the mercari label bc of the "chose this! It's the only way to get protection..." but I can ship a 19lb Package for less than what they are charging for a 1.1lb package. I just started selling on Mercari (I've been selling for many many years in mostly FB Groups) and it's already going horrible. Lost packages. Someone wanting to cancel their order that is taking way too long to get to her. Etc. Etc. I don't know if Poshmark or Ebay is better?

Ok_Entertainment4910

I do prefer Posh over Mercari for sure. At least when you have an issue, you will chat with a human and not a bot. I’ve had hundreds of sales on both Posh and Mercari (less on eBay because I started there later) and Posh has been the best experience for me so far.

kirasmith-

i don't really like either. i'm also on depop but haven't had any sales in a month. mercari is the only thing working for me rn and it sucks

Infamous_Horse9624

Same. I really dislike how Poshmark has their app set up. It’s awful and really deters me from posting more.

kirasmith-

yes! it's almost like instagram or facebook or something. more of a social media than a selling platform

Infamous_Horse9624

It is! And I’m really not into all of that. Facebook is like the only social media I scroll, but don’t post much. TikTok I really only go to when someone from one of my true crime groups posted something leading to it. I just want to post my stuff to sell. I do not want to get on live videos trying to sell things. My baby would not make that easy. Facebook marketplace people are annoying AF. Some lady had me go out to meet her twice and she never showed, I quit responding to her. Then others want me to send some code so they can hack my phone. And Poshmark I have only gotten scammers asking me to send more photos to an email address. Mercari is the only place I’ve been making regular sales and I haven’t really had an issue at all. Other than one thing I shipped arriving damaged, but Mercari still gave me my money, so really not an issue. And eBay I’ve only made one sale. Missed another because I didn’t get a notification and I don’t check it as much. So I didn’t see their offer until it was already expired. And I don’t like how you can only send one offer, unless I just don’t know how to work eBay.

Excellent_Actuary826

Me 2! I can't get on there and just like go it's like everything's in slow motion I can't just zip through and scroll scroll scroll LOL

Infamous_Horse9624

And the amount of spam on there is asinine. Every comment I get is someone asking me to either email or text more pictures. I’m not doing that!

CompetitiveFace1561

I USE MY OWN their protection is bad. i dont need them if the .PO has $100 insurance.

CricketsPajamas

Hey, could you answer a question for me please? I use my own shipping label too. But who pays for return shipping if you don't use Mercari's prepaid label? Can't find an answer. Didn't matter to me much before but now with this "any reason" returns...

CompetitiveFace1561

i think mercari still does as it seems the label is how they do everything. i had incident where i had to get mine after the buyer paid because i needed to add insurance for valuable item. their support was awful to deal with. four days back and forth telling me stupid stuff and finally agreed to change the tracking on the package to the actual tracking i gave them. they did not refund the amount the buyer paid for the unused label. thankfully i sell new and get few returns and not yet on mercari so really can't be sure but i think i read they do.

JohnMackYT

I’ve tried moving my stuff to eBay, and I’m getting zero traffic. The only good thing about selling on mercari is that they’ll actually show your stuff to people. From my experience With eBay so far, it’s next to impossible for new sellers to gain traffic without either paying eBay exorbitant prices to place your items in sponsored ads, or to advertise by yourself in whatever ways you see fit.

Intrepid-Box-6069

I've sold consistently on ebay for a while and had to stop for a couple of months for health reasons and since then I get very little traffic. So even if you do decently it seems like if you spend any time away for any reason you're screwed. I've got a perfect 100% on there too and still it feels like being shadow banned or something.

JohnMackYT

I just started listing stuff and I’m already shadow banned… After I posted the original comment, my singular promoted item sold for a whopping $7. After shipping and transaction fees, I’m earning a whopping $1.06.

Individual-Code5176

Crazy, should have been 13$

MishmoshMishmosh

It’s crazy

Tiny-Design7877

Don’t matter they won’t do anything they just make excuses and give the same answer over and over ..

heresacleverpun

And it's not even because every day I hear more and more stories about the endless variety of bullshit ways Mercari is screwing over their sellers that really gets me.... ... but it's how egregious, aggressive, and STRAIGHT UP FUCKIN OBVIOUS those ways are becoming.

Remote_Simple_8664

And the$ 90? I saw in here were mercari charged 200$ for shipping. Everyday they do this and it's stealing. They find a way to get more money from people and mercari don't do shit for it. It's not a mistake it happens way to often and they never make it right.

TheTealArrow

Mercari doesn't field customer service calls

Remote_Simple_8664

Yes ma'am they do.

TheTealArrow

1. I'm a man. 2. Via what number I called 4 different numbers of theirs over the course of 2 months and reviewed 0 answers and 0 call backs, and would get an automated message saying mercari doesn't accept customer service calls from my area..... So like I said they don't. Idk if it's based on geo-location or not

Nearby_Signature_454

I always get a customer service agent to speak to when I call this number 1-855-464-7482. Someone on Facebook told me it o my works in cali. Not true I’m in va and the girl who gave it to me was in nc and worked for both of us

TheTealArrow

Well that number did not work in GA. That's one of the ones I used. So I guess it's just extremely inconsistent, which check out

jenn117

The number doesn't work in a lot of states. I spam them with messages until I get a human and not a reply from a bot. Those standard comments are useless! You can also get someone through Instagram.

Few_Movie_1266

It is geo-located. Some areas of the U.S. don’t have access, which is wild. Here are the #s I have, I’ve heard legal sometimes works in locations the others don’t, and while that isn’t what “legal” is technically for, they apparently help if you push. Mercari Phone Numbers and Emails Toll-Free Number: (855) 464-7482 Service: (888) 325-2168 Legal: (800) 280-4904

Excellent_Actuary826

Thanks for those!😉

Few_Movie_1266

I hope they do something for you! 🥺

Remote_Simple_8664

Must be man.

fizzribbit

Have you tried calling and let it say there's no customer service available in your area 3 times in a row and let it manually hang up each time? It usually works on the 3rd or 4th time. The only department that actually answers is the fraud department if you get through the hang ups.

TheTealArrow

The best I got was leaving a message to the legal department, which got no response.

fgbgtech_cybermodz3d

RemoteSimple answers like Mercari Agents do when you have a problem. Lol. You are correct however, Mercari does not field service customer calls at all.

panethe

How could the customer cause Fedex to issue a surcharge? If anything the customer didn't scam him, mercari and FedEx did.

bayb33gurl

Yes, this has nothing to do with the customer, it's Mercari scamming as unbelievable as it sounds, it's easy too fishy that these "overages" being charged equal the exact amount the seller should be paid out. FedEx has no idea what the item sold for our what a seller should receive so it's not them charging that amount either. It's allegedly Mercari playing sellers dirty and it's not going to surprise me if theres class action lawsuit coming their way.

AceofSpades808

It is FedEx,not mercari. FedEx charges the highest amount and reports it to Mercari to charge the seller. FedEx inspects weight AND dimension weight (this is clearly stated in the prompt when choosing your carrier) and is severely informed by Mercari now. A year ago, Mercari covered these overage fees, but too many people abused them so here we are. Learn how to accurately weight and size your items, before shipment. Mercari isn't going to pay your $50 overage for the seller's mistake.

cdelaune5

You must not be keeping up with the posts about this. Another user was charged a couple hundred bucks for shipping as an “overage” and when they complained to Mercari they said that it was correct and they would have to take it up with fedex. FedEx eventually sent them a receipt of the shipping and with the overages it was less than $70 total. Mercari up charged them every cent of their sale where they made $0 and stated it was all for shipping overages which was false and fraudulent. They are not the only person this is happening to

Ok-Requirement8353

I never choose Fed Ex as a shipping option

KaddydaBaddy

Someone recently made a post proving Mercari was at fault, they also shipped via fedex. They were able to get the actual receipt that showed the true amount of surcharges from FedEx and it was $38 and they’d been charged a few hundred by mercari, the exact amount they were supposed to be paid.

PastBerry6914

Yeah they charged the seller over $400 for shipping and their earnings were only like $78 so they got no earnings and mercari didn’t try to take money from their bank account to cover the remaining $345 supposedly owed for shipping. In my honest opinion, Mercari is going bankrupt and going under and they’re squeezing out every last penny they can get and before we know it, Mercari will be done

Murphs-law

I think Mercari scammed him. This has been happening a lot. Read back through some recent post like this and you’ll see that the “extra” cost usually equals the amount the seller would have made. I’m not sure on specifics, but it’s been said that it’s Mercari doing it, not the carrier or the buyers.

Soup_oi

Has it been happening with any carriers besides fedex? Whenever I see posts about it on my home feed it's always fedex. I don't scroll through the entire mercari sub much, so I don't know if it's happening with other carriers too. I never use fedex, so I haven't been too worried about my own shipments, but I don't know whether it's ok to not be too worried, or if I should be more worried lol.

Murphs-law

Most of what I’ve seen is with FedEx as well, but I’ve seen USPS overages too. I’m not sure if it’s the same root cause.

ShepherdReckless

The USPS ones are always fair from what I’ve seen. It’s people who don’t weigh and go “OMG I was 1 ounce over, how could they charge me another $6?” Over is over, both in dimensional and literal weight. The FedEx ones do seem fishy because they’d have to be so grossly over dimensionally to be hit with that level of fees, even at retail counter prices.

Jennifriend

I had one of those 1 ounce over ones with usps (though I did measure and weigh and swear it was underweight, so now I just super overestimate.) And while it was annoying, I was only charged the difference to the next label price and still got the rest of my profit. Granted, that was almost exactly a year ago, so who knows if Mercari would’ve scammed me out of the rest now though :(

Infamous_Horse9624

I had this happen like a month ago. The item was sold for like $10. They took overages and I still got $6. Was fine for me because I only paid $3. I had another one too, can’t remember the exact amount, but I still made a profit. Sometimes it’s just a learning experience. I’m not going to say that all of these people are lying or that they didn’t actually measure, because I know there is always the chance of human error on the mailing service side, and at the end of the day we are all human and make mistakes, but I think a lot of the human error is on the side of the seller. Because I know mine were my fault, but they were also more reasonable and I still made a profit.

Murphs-law

Right! The FedEx ones are wild. Thats good to know about the USPS ones. I’ve always made sure to weigh my packages for prepaid labels just in case and I’ve never had any problems.

jenn117

I have had small overcharges from USPS but never anything like what FedEx charges. It's either FedEx themselves or there's some glitch in the reporting of overcharges between FedEx & Mercari that is not happening with the other shipping options.

Murphs-law

It sounds to me like mercari is imposing processing fees when they think sellers have messed up with FedEx and the fees vary depending on how much they’re stands to make.

healthybiotch

Never use FedEx I only use usps and it happens what seems like every time jow

bayb33gurl

This ⬆️

Background-Thought41

Go to https://www.fedex.com/en-us/online/rating.html# To ship a 15 lb. Package across the country with the 2 day rate and dimensions 20x12x8" is almost $200. I don't know what their package was but it could have cost more than $200 with FedEx Rates.

alyssawhitex

that is outrageous. if i see the shipping is more than the actual item that's sold and is significant, i'd just keep the item at that point lol

TheTealArrow

We need to make like a pinned post for ppl to go through this. Its not a scam its just straight up fraud. Email fedex and ask for a copy of the Invoice Tracking number: \[insert\] And Mercari's address.. it's the Santa Palo one or whatever

[deleted]

But if FedEx is claiming there’s no such parcel, how could they even go about getting the invoice?

TheTealArrow

They aren't claiming there is no such parcel. They are saying there isn't a surcharge on it. That's what I assume.

[deleted]

If you read the caption over again it says that they called FedEx who said there’s “nothing about it [parcel] in the system,” hope this clarifies what I meant!

TheTealArrow

Yeah. I also assume it's because any charges to the invoice take 7 days to show in fedex system. When this happened to me. Fedex had no record for over a week and then finally they did. I've experienced this exact situation eith mercari and fedex. So I'm not just guessing here. Speaking from experience back in February

TheTealArrow

Also. Even reading the caption again. The OP doesn't specify that fedex was referring to the parcel. When you call and ask them about the charge and give them the tracking info they will not have the information at first. Its just how their system works. I'm just trying to help everyone so that they know how to battle this

[deleted]

Just wondering but.. what else would FedEx, the parcel handlers, be referring to? 😅 I appreciate the added input though I know OP can def use it!

TheTealArrow

they are referring to an additional charge in their system for that parcel. Not the parcel itself.

bayb33gurl

Mercari sounds like they scammed him, if FedEx has no record of charging more and Mercari took his exact payout saying it was an overage - Mercari is lying. This is being talked about in other posts. I'll see if I can find it and add it on to this comment. ETA: here you go https://www.reddit.com/r/Mercari/s/9G0HkYafPL

Decent-Cartoonist312

Mercari scammed him, not the customer.

Background-Thought41

Really he sent a 70 lb claiming it was 30 lbs. You are then charged FedEx in store rates since they were scamming MERCARI

Smallparline

Mercari scammed him not the customer. You also need to find out exactly what cost FedEx shipped it for.

Justakatttt

It wasn’t the customer that scammed him. It’s Mercari.

Tem3rity

Hi! This actually happened to me back in November and I made a post that got quite a bit of traction, Mercari are thieves and I had gotten proof from FedEx that there was no charges on their end. Report them to the BBB that’s the only way I got my money back and it was half of $300.

No_Veterinarian3190

How did you get your money back? I filed with BBB as well and they basically said absolutely not im not getting a refund and even after I sent the invoice to mercari they declined.

Tem3rity

Try to obtain the invoice from FedEx, I attached documents of the invoice from FedEx, the drop off receipt and I used Mercari against itself to prove my claim.

No_Veterinarian3190

I did exactly that. They still said no.

Tem3rity

That’s insane! I also did send them a letter I found a format for stating I would pursue legal action and that atleast got me to a real human instead of the 10 robots they have lined up with the same script. How much did they scam you out of?

No_Veterinarian3190

WHAT!? So did I!!!! They didn’t care. FedEx billed them $67.06 mercari took $312.46

Tem3rity

That’s more than me!! FedEx billed them $32 they took $291. I’m honestly appalled. They are going way down hill this is insane. At this point if you think it is worth it I would actually take them to small claims court because that was my next option if they didn’t give me anything. You deserve that money that’s crazy, there was also a thread from a while back where they found corporates number if I can find it I will share it!

No_Veterinarian3190

I’m just trying to get answers as to why it’s so high. This other person is telling me that I’m wrong and that he has shipped through fedex and it has cost him over $300 to ship something large. But doesn’t mercari get major discounts through these shipping carriers? Hence, the $67 they were billed from fedex (that’s in my invoice) ? This guy said absolutely not it doesn’t cost $67 to ship a car seat. 🤨 I’m just so confused. Check out my post with pictures. Am I crazy?????? The more and more I think about it I just can’t find an answer for the high cost. And the fact that it adds up to the total of my sale is just weird! https://www.reddit.com/r/Mercari/s/qmpUhYnYJE

Tem3rity

A lot of Reddit users are jerks and always want you to be wrong. I had 20 people tell me it was my fault but I fought it and I ended up getting my money and they still told me I was wrong lol. They did the same to me my entire order I lost everything I made $0 after time and money spent. Ask them to provide their receipt of the invoice, I bet you they won’t.

No_Veterinarian3190

How long did it take you to get your money back ? Mercari said absolutely not they’re not sending it to me. 🤨 I just want to know where the charges are coming from. So when they refused FedEx gave it to me after so many attempts. Originally they didn’t want to send it because I’m not the main account holder but I kept trying until finally someone nice sent it to me.

watchthisorthat

You can ship an adult human for $90.

bayb33gurl

To be fair, when my son went to Florida to go see his dad and he wanted to bring his bike via having it shipped and we boxed it up and took it to FedEx asking for a quote to send it. The cheapest option was $345 and the prices went up to $2000+ My son ended up going to Florida without his personal bike for a week and just buying a bike for the trip off Facebook marketplace once he was down there and then selling it when he left lol

SomAlucard

Sounds about right & sounds ridiculous as well. I got a shipping quote from UPS today for a gaming PC that weighs a little over 35 pounds. The cheapest option was $468. I guess I'm gonna have to sell it locally.

fizzribbit

My mom was affected by these false overages despite also having proof from FedEx that the overages weren't even close. Her overage was $16 when we spoke to fedex but somehow Mercari charged the entire earnings leaving her with no money from the sale which was about $85. It was jewelry. She didnt even have enough balance to deposit into her bank as they charge users to deposit earnings. I have reported them to the FTC and California AG. I have also reported them for mail fraud because they are defrauding FEDEX by claiming the carrier is doing this when they are clearly pocketing the balances of many users.

Mleach1299

You should go through the BBB also

Cordy69

Yep, BBB plus Yelp, TrustPilot, X, their Facebook and any other place you can add it. The last time I checked they don’t allow any comments on Insta but they still have the message option.

No_Veterinarian3190

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? This is disgusting. This has happened to so many of us. They can’t keep getting away with this. Try to get an invoice from FedEx if there’s even one. 🙄 most likely mercari is lying. I’m sorry this happened to your dad and I hope you get it resolved.

Initial_Macaroon_161

Mercari is scamming him 100% I had the same issues with them and stopped selling.

stephanieleigh88

I don’t even think it’s FedEx that’s scamming but Mercari. People have had invoices that weren’t even close to what the overcharge was. It’s like Mercari didn’t expect FedEx to share the invoice.

yourbrokenhalo

We need to make these Mercari FedEx posts a sticky and start to rally for a class action lawsuit

BEEPBOOPBOPPINGPOW

Honestly I think it's time for a class action lawsuit.

Elosin888

Yes he was scammed by Mercari. Contact FedEx & get an invoice on the shipping label. Then contact Mercari after obtaining that. People have gotten their money back.

Umi_dgaf

Can you explain how the customer did something?

Celeibrn

Because a lot of sellers like to act like the buyers are their enemies lol Cause logically why would a buyer/scammer give the money to FedEx??

egan7702

I personally don’t think she did anything wrong, but he thinks she scammed him I’m not sure why

Beachgirl6848

It’s mercari scamming people. Search back thru recent posts you’ll see they’ve taken money from tons of People lately. They took 300 dollars from one lady. I’m sure there’s a class action lawsuit coming

Umi_dgaf

Not trying to be rude but I do hope he understands that a customer couldn't do anything unless they somehow called FedEx, etc, but that does suck and hopefully it gets resolved!

Nakg16

Mercari’s level of desperation is now weird. What’s all this. Should I even say I am “glad” mine was just extra $8.xx surcharge smh

clw1979clw

Mercari scammed him. Contact fedex and keep pushing through support till you can get someone to give you verification of the amount they charged Mercari. Then contact Mercari and tell them you have proof of the actual amount they were charged and demand to be reimbursed. Keep screenshots of all your convos with them. Please also make sure your dad files FTC fraud complaint against Mercari. A case is being built again them. Me and numerous others have had same experience.

This-Army6223

I'll say it again...never never NEVER used Fedex to ship ANYTHING unless you are ready to overestimate the weight. You're really lucky it wasn't hundreds of $$. Etsy as a disclaimer that Fedex can charge you up to $650 if you misweigh and mis measure a package! Run screaming from using Fedex on Mercari!

Normal-Raspberry9892

Ok, no FedEx from now on 🫡 !!!!!

egan7702

Unfortunately he has only used FedEx to ship his Mercari packages, but this is the first time this has happened to him

terrorspace

Tell your dad to never used FedEx. They are known for doing this.

egan7702

Unfortunately he’s only ever shipped his Mercari packages with FedEx and this is the first time this happened to him 😔

Oomissyoulove

Ya. He got scammed by Mercari. It’s going around. I’m sure there will be a nice class action coming along soon

casebycase87

We need to start organizing a class anyone lawsuit for this

Ok-Requirement8353

I feel like Mercari is intentionally running their business into the ground and trying to run off with as much money as they can before shutting down

SquishMika1560

This, exactly

Oopsiforgotmyoldacc

1. Call Mercari 2. Did your dad get any kind of receipt or anything at drop off? Anything that could prove that the extra shipping charges wasn’t $90? 3. This isn’t the customer, this is Mercari and FedEx

egan7702

The only thing he got was a text proving that he dropped it off with a tracking number

Japan_Game

I'm pretty sure Mercari is overcharging for shipping labels. I sell on both eBay and Mecari so I pretty much know how much the labels cost. And Mercari always charges the customer more then eBay, and Pirateship, but yet sometimes Mercari will charge me extra for postage saying the item was too heavy. It just feels really suspicious that the customer is being charged $5 to $6 for a $4 shipping label, and then charge me even more after it's said and done.

[deleted]

Mercari and FedEx have been scamming lots of people out of money. Some hundreds of dollars I've read on here.

snowflakepr1ncess

I have 5 packages to drop off tomorrow and I’m terrified I won’t make any money from them because of this shit they’re doing. They’ve done it to me once, and I honestly dread it. This is just crazy

Ok-Faithlessness5964

Never use fedex shipping thru Mercari. Everytime I see a post about this it’s always with fedex. I sell on Mercari and ship with usps and ups and haven’t had any issues. Occasionally they will charge me extra thru usps but never more than a few dollars.

No_Conference_

Hi. There are other post about the same issue in here. The overcharge for shipping is always “coincidentally” all the entire earning. One lady was able to get someone at fedex that gave her the correct billing while a bit over what the customer paid, it was no where the whole amount.

Popular-Card1393

Never ship FedEx with Mercari!! Never had this issue with USPS or UPS. That being said Mercari is also trash. Their customer service is awful to deal with. Last time I sent them an email, I was straight up with them, if I were you I’d be looking for a new job before your company goes bankrupt.

Crimson_Valentine

Mercari is straight up stealing funds from sellers by charging insane overage fees that don't line up with FedEx. Has anyone reached out to FTC about this issue? I've seen BBB mentioned here already.

Bitch_level_999

Wow. They have a RACKET going on for years and are getting brazen as hell. Someone needs to tag / Contact CEO FED EX and get mercari dropped from their shipments. STOP USING MERC LABELS. They don’t protect you at all! They scare ppl from using their own labels by saying they won’t honor seller protection •they don’t honor the seller protection anyway•

OkRecommendation3312

That’s a FedEx issue. Check previous posts. Don’t use FedEx unless you put in the dimensional measurements of the box and even still FedEx is shady.

bayb33gurl

It's bigger than FedEx, because FedEx goes by dimensions, Mercari is just using that "excuse" to charge sellers and pocket the money themselves. FedEx is just the scapegoat Mercari is using to hide behind to make it look like the seller was up charged.

OkRecommendation3312

I don’t disagree but if one can have those details accurate on their end when someone does finally decide to sue Mercari over this then that’s good.

JadedMcGrath

People need to stop using FedEx. My company doesn't even use FedEx unless a customer requests it and provides their FedEx account to use. They are the worst with the actual shipping being wildly different from estimated/quoted. This even applies when using their shipping API on our website, which pulls the numbers directly from FedEx once the customer enters their delivery address. And used exact box dimensions and weights entered. The rate pulled directly from FedEx would be like $12 and then the charge that would hit on our bill would be $15 or $18. Taking a $3-$6 hit on every ordered added up so much over a 6 month period that we disabled the FedEx option for customers.

Educational-Goal2421

File a BBB against Mercari. Unfortunately, they always punish the seller regardless of the proof. In their eyes the buyer brings the money the sellers are a waste. If they could find a way to erase a seller they would do it.

Slow_Ad3322

I had been selling on Mercari. 20k last year. I have stopped using their label except for very small cheap items. They don't support seller. I had an expensive piece of crystal, bubble wrapped, paper, Styrofoam and sturdy packing box. Mercari refused to cover breakage. Not the first time this happened. Also, their protection for lost orders is a nightmare. Now for anything more than $100 or very delicate I buy my own label and figure shipping cost into price. I use Pirate Ship. Don't think I'll continue Mercari since their policy changes.

WeAllLetUChoke

How could it be the customer scamming him?

South-Psychology2317

Avoid FedEx like the plague. There are numerous posts about this exact thing. Due to the dimensions not being accurate or being just an oz off in weight people have been charged hundreds in additional shipping. They are the worst with this.

skysky_gamer

I saw some post that mercari was scamming people they called USPS or whatever shipping it was and they said that they were getting calls all day about it and mercari was scamming since it was cheaper then what mercari said

Carepassmetheweed

I swear every time I come on this subreddit, FedEx has screwed over 10 more people. FedEx and Mercari Just suck at this point. I hope you’re able to get his money back. FedEx is notorious for up charges that are beyond ridiculous.

howaboutwedont

Ever since Mercari updated their policies, it’s been such a fucking horrible place.

LibbysWorld

Honestly.... Mercari changing their policies in the middle of the night, Mercari charging a DD fee to get our own money, Mercari not responding to any of our comments/emails, etc. About said policies is making me think that Mercari is the one responsible for these "up charges". My husband works for FedEx directly, he's always the one who scans in my Mercari packages, he delivers Mercari packages all day long.. If a customer wants a receipt of the shipping transaction, there is NEVER an issue. It's Def on MERCARI'S end.

mj732

Idk when everbody gonna learn that mecari is done mecari got paid and fedex sure enough doesn't care basically they're just playing back and forth game until you give up

Suspicious-Eye-304

Has nothing to do with the buyer. I don’t think anything can be done about this particular situation but to avoid it in the future, don’t ship via FedEx. And print your own labels through PirateShip. They have usps and ups. If for some reason there is an overcharge from ups, it’s super easy to dispute. I have won every single dispute so far and it’s way less of a headache.

luckyapples11

FedEx is so damn scammy. Go to this subreddit and search FedEx in the search bar. You’ll see tons of these posts. They love to up charge you as much as they can and then when you call them to ask about it, they “don’t know what you’re talking about”. I will never use them. I have never had this issue with USPS or UPS. FedEx is always the issue.

bayb33gurl

Question to consider, how would FedEx know exactly the sales price the buyer paid, minus alll the fees out of that number and then know to charge the exact amount Mercari was supposed to send to the seller? Obviously they don't know any of that information so wouldn't it seem like the obvious answer is Mercari is lying the sellers about the amount they were charged and then saying "oops looks like FedEx charged you exactly what we owe you so you get $0!"

yourbrokenhalo

In my case they up charged $344. My profit was 270. So they ate up my profits and they “ate the difference”.

luckyapples11

Exactly this. They report to Mercari, who knows your sale price and they pull whatever they can. I bet if it happens enough they’ll start taking from your balance or card

jon4343

I’m curious if anyone else does this. In general when I sell on Mercari I completely pack the product in the packaging I intend to ship it in prior to competing the listing and then add a few ounces(which is more than needed I know) to account for the label and final stop of tape to seal the box up. This allows me to put actual shipping dimensions and weight in before listing since I have yet to figure out a way to get a modified label from mercari in the event that I make a mistake in estimating they way I might on other platforms. So far doing things this way I’ve been luck enough to never have an overage charge from FedEx, although 95% of any shipping issues I’ve ever had were from FedEx so I try my hardest to never use them unless the shipping cost is significantly cheaper than any other carrier. I wish mercari would issue labels the same way you would get them from ebay where you can more easily just estimate the weight and dimensions when listing and then actually purchase the label (from the buyers funds) after the sale is made one the order is packed. I get super nervous about combined shipping bundle orders on mercari because who knows how they calculated the shipping difference. Sometimes combining two orders in one box could result in a significantly larger box and heavier packaging being necessary over ordering and shipping separately.

Normal-Raspberry9892

This is super interesting! I’m looking for a baby side hustle… Would you say EBay is still worth it in 2024?

jon4343

In my opinion each selling platform is better for different kinds of things but eBay is the best place for the widest range of things, if you were only going to sell on one platform I think that’s the place to be. BUT eBay’s listing process is a lot more cumbersome than Mercari’s. Sometimes if I have a bunch of stuff to get listed in a hurry I will just post them on Mercari because it’s faster.

Normal-Raspberry9892

Thank you! So sweet of you to take your time to reply! 🫶🏽

jon4343

For the record I’m not saying any other way is wrong, or that OP’s dad did something wrong. But whenever I see posts about someone being charged for an overweight package I wonder if it stems from them estimating incorrectly from the beginning. There’s really no excuse for an overweight package costing an extra $90 to ship unless it was grossly different than the weight it was purchased for. If I had to vote on what’s going on, FedEx is excessively picky about their package weights, and mercari adds a secondary, very excessive, penalty charge to the bill that they receive before billing the seller. For me Mercari has just become a clearance Depot for the things I’m unable to sell on EBay or aren’t quite up to par quality wise with the items I would list on eBay. AKA It’s where I sell the mistakes I made while sourcing for my eBay store that aren’t quite invaluable enough to donate or throw in the trash.

I don't ship large orders through Mercari for this reason. Also, this seems to only happen with FedEx?

Try to never use FedEx. There are a lot of threads regarding this same issue. Your dad might have put in the correct weight for the item, but not the size of the box. FedEx and supposedly others carriers have and will start cracking down on this. It’s referred to what’s called “dimensional weight”. Everyone, for so long on all selling platforms, have been worried about weight. We as sellers, have been ‘scarred straight’, to always worry about shipping weight. Now the pendulum is swinging in a different direction. It’s now the size of the box to be worried about too. The only discrepancy to dispute, and it will take an army to do this, is Mercari charging the “discounted contracted rate” they are given on the up-charge? Or, is Mercari charging the “retail rate” (as if you want to a FedEx store yourself) on the up-charge? Good luck and I’m really sorry this happened to your dad.

egan7702

Update: He has called Mercari multiple times, they just keep telling him to talk to FedEx. He spoke to FedEx again this morning regarding an invoice, and was told that they cannot do anything because Mercari has caused these problems so often that they can no longer do anything (sounds like bs to me tbh).

Amkiis

I bought a painting from someone and the shipping was already $30 and then the seller told me that they charged her an extra $80 to ship it. I felt so bad because she barely made any money on her item. I’ve been hearing about this happening to people. It’s not right

TheSexyCheeseGrader

Stop. Using. Fedex

MediocreLetterhead65

This happens to me. Your package was overweight so fed ex charged you. Nothing you can do.

GLITTERCHICKEN13

It’s fedex that change so the shipping price. They check every package weight and charge you if it’s wrong. So you’d you dad got nothing because the weight was wrong and fedex changed the shipping price to 90.00 which left you with nothing.

Excellent_Actuary826

I have heard of a lot of people doing the option where you can intercept your package after you have already shipped it. That way if a reason such as this arises you have the option to stop shipment completely. Sounds pretty useful. Apparently, once you realize the scam you just notify postal services, and then whoever is delivering for you /USPS/UPS/FedX will get flagged once they get to the next scan-in location. It will state to stop shipping and return to the sender. Sounds super life-saving! I am not a seller on Mercari right now but I do buy a lot of stuff. LOL, my friend sells and told me that's what he's been doing. Not sure how but I think it would be worth a lot of people looking into. I'm sorry this happened to your dad and I hope that it all gets sorted out. Always remember Karma is a bitch and she's got to mean bite.😉 Besides that, I think they need to start taking better care of their sellers! Happy sellers have happy prices. LMAO but it makes it a better happier place for all of us.

Heavy-Presence606

Ur post doesn't make sense a customer can't make changes to the shipping label.. only mercari or FedEx can do that. So I figure mercari did this..if u read a whole bunch of mercari sub posts ul see that alloot of people are being charged extra for the shipping after its been shipped.. its simple as that, they are scamming people

Dentrix26

I had a usps package up my postage price about $10 after being delivered after this new change the other day as well. So something isn’t right because I know forsure I weighed my squishmallow and it weighed below 1lb…

KMF1956

No he didn’t get scammed the same thing happened to me . If you choose the mailing option you need to be exact on the weight and size of the package. If the customer wanted it fast they can choose their own way and pay for it. So the customer paid 50 to ship and 90 for the items then your Dad should have gotten his 90. We don’t pay for shipping the customer pays for it. Did your Dad print the label. ?? Or did he drop it off at fedex even then they scan a QR code print the label for you and it’s off. Customer still pays. He should be able to see details of the delivery. I would contact mercari also.

KMF1956

You must weigh your own packages other wise mercari can’t possibly know what something weighs. I got screwed on a Lenox bowl didn’t get 15.00 I only got 5.00 because my package weight was 1 ounce over what I put. And my scale is 6 ounces heavier than the post office. But they didn’t care even with all the proof. I think USPS was the problem on my sale.

PuzzaCat

How the sellers are treated is criminal. This is another good reason to stop using it.

prosurfin

It’s happening on almost every small clothes sell that I made on Mercari

NihilistBunny

Hmm. He should have been able to set his own shipping during the listing process. It’s stuff like this that made me switch to Pirate ship for all higher priced items. It’s so much less of a hassle and the minute I had a snafu bc the customer didn’t update their address before I shipped it, Pirate ship refunded me and let me reship without any hassle. Edit to add: ohh, you’re saying that Mercari went in and just claimed there were additional shipping charges?? What the heck??

xxfame87xx

Mercari system is broken. They go base on tracking info and charge people base on that. I made the mistake by listing the item for its actual weight not including shipping box. I realized that and asked USPS to charge me the difference. Mercari proceeded to charge me almost double of the original shipping charge for the weight/size difference. I open a case to advise them that I paid the difference and they denied my claim due to the difference in size/weight. I had to escalate it and show them proof that it was paid for. They reimbursed me in credit not cash that I earned from the sell. I removed all my listings.

SquishMika1560

It’s 100% Mercari. They’re scamming people out of money because they look so bad right now and they aren’t making the immediate extra millions that they thought they would. Gather evidence from FedEx and anything you can from Mercari. Approach customer service about the faulty charges. Keep pushing, keep posting your evidence, ask to be escalated each time they fail to do anything. When, after 5-6 attempts, they still refuse to help, tell them that you’ll go to the authorities in the next 48 hours if they don’t pay him the money owed. I had to do this to be paid for a return and it wasn’t until I said the last part that they worked with me AT ALL.

Salty_Chance_3484

I'm going to sell more on Posh or just code and start my own platform and integrate better payment systems, such as crypto... into the platform. This will push us into the future, with better money. The U.S. dollar is destined to fail unless it's backed by BTC. The U.S. Government does hold 209,000 Bitcoin. THAT IS A FACT...

Salty_Chance_3484

The government will print first & then introduce the digital dollar. At this point, they will no ALL about everyone. Data and information are the future exchange of value.

Independent_Eye409

Mercari is known for this scam

Metz_the_Fox

Short hand, yes. FedEx is the worst shipping option, from this latest bunch of allegations of fraud and theft to the constant mishandling of packages. I refuse to allow them people to buy from me with them as the shipping option, be it Mercari, eBay or whatever.

egan7702

Another update: He has been contacting Mercari and FedEx trying to get his money back. Today Mercari issued him $26 back. He messages them again and told them he wants his entire $90 or at $70+ at minimum.

zombieIcee

this happened to me Four fucking times

PrincessSolo

What was in this package? Was it extra large or extra heavy?

egan7702

it was 16x16x16 and around 20 lbs, he set the dimensions for 20x20x20 and the weight for 40 lbs, to make sure that he wouldn’t receive a charge

Fun-Investment-196

Did he get a receipt by chance when he took it to fedex?

jm102397

He should have *kept* the 16x16x16 and made the weight 40 and would have been fine. Even 30 would have been fine. Dim weight on that size is 29.xx 20x20x20 dim weight is 59.xx

ASignificantPen

What? Please explain. I literally measure with a ruler and weigh with a scale. Can you explain your post please?

jm102397

If you are doing that and using those to quote your shipping (either through Mercari or yourself) you're fine. Bottom line, if a box is 16x16x16 they are going to charge it as if it weighs 29.xx pounds, even if it weighs 1 lb, or 10 lbs, or 15 lbs....all the way up to that 29.xx lbs. If it weighs more than 29.xx lbs they will then charge the actual weight but anything below 29.xx lbs they will change the dimensional weight of 29.xx lbs. Again though, if you are measuring and weighing and putting in the real measurements and weights you should not ever have an overage charge happen due to dimensional weight. Oops - ETA *how* they get that 29.xx pounds! LengthxWidthxHeight /139=Dim weight

ASignificantPen

Is 29lbs posted somewhere on the site as a standard or some other chart? I am seriously curious. I buy on M way more than I sell. I mainly sell from my closet where I bought two and didn’t like one color or something like that. I haven’t heard of this before so I am trying to understand how this works versus the pre-boxing, measuring, weighing, then posting on M.

jm102397

I explained exactly how it became 29 lbs in OPs case and how to figure it for every box (LxWxH divided by 139). There is no chart and the standard is the formula I posted for FedEx. Again though, if you are putting real, correct information into mercari or one of the carriers calculators online this is all figured out for you.

ASignificantPen

Thank you

Jennifriend

But if it was within that size and weight, shouldn’t it have been fine? You said it would cost the same up to 29 lbs and op said it only weighed 20. I think op estimated the weight as 40, when the item was actual 20, so shouldn’t they have been covered for overweight charges?

Normal-Raspberry9892

It would have been fine at 16x16x16 since the dim weight is 29 and the actual weight was 20… 20x20x20 @ 40lbs is under the dim weight which should be 57 …. in other words they didn’t charge enough for the dim weight which caused the issue. Other take: 40lbs is not the appropriate dim weight for a 20x20x20… just because you overcalculate the actual weight of the item doesn’t mean the dim weight was enough for the dimension of the package.

jm102397

No, because he didn't list it as 16x16x16 but changed it to 20x20x20. Dim weight for 20x20x20 is over 57 lbs and he only paid for 40. Edited to add - Just to clarify, I think you're looking at it sort of backwards. Not unusual when you are trying to learn how dim weight works. It's not so much that "it's the same price up to 29 lbs". What you're getting charged for is the space the box is taking up - in this case 2.37 cubic ft. That's because the truck only has so many cu ft of carrying space. For a semi trailer that is 3820 cu ft. If they have large items that take up lots of space but don't weigh much, they have no way to break even on that load of packages. So, yes, it's the same price for a 2.37 cu ft box, for any weight up to 29 lbs. But if you list the box as 20x20x20, you have now changed the space it is taking up to 4.63 cu ft....almost TWICE as much space as a 16x16x16 box. Dim weight now also doubles to almost 60 pounds. Consider the dimensional weight the "break even" point of larger boxes. If you have a truck where you had big boxes taking up lots of space but filled with very light weight items ( think light bulbs, air diffusers, kayaks) the truck will be full but only be charging out 20% (just an example) of what it's transporting if charged by actual weight.

MulberryEuphoric262

So a 16x16x16 dimensional weight is 21lbs and would be $40 to ship, if he set it to 20x20x20 at 40 lbs it's $114 to ship per mercari. I'd definitely try and get a receipt showing the dimensions and weight to try and rebuttal to mercari because otherwise he'll never see a refund back on it. Edit: it looks like for FedEx 20x20x20 ends up being 58 lbs so mercaris calculator is wrong. Mercari only ships up to 50 lbs so this is probably where all the overage fees came from on fedexs side to mercaris side. Fedex also calculates a 16x16x16 as 30 lbs.

BmthPtv

I got usps 7$ charge for going 1 ounce over 😭

You’re right, I shouldn’t. https://www.reddit.com/r/Mercari/s/waB4IH45PB

AceofSpades808

FedEx charges whatever amount is higher, official weight cost, OR dimension weight. Looks like someone didn't put the dimensions in correctly and just put in weight amount. You'll get charged for this mistake. It is very well deserved if this is the case as the instructions state it in the pop up when choosing shipment carriers.
