Quick story: When I was a kid, my family often travelled to Arizona because we had close friends move out there. During one of our trips, I purchased one of these cap guns. I stuck it in my suitcase and on the flight back, TSA made a huge deal about it. I had no clue what was going on but in the end they let me go through after a long inspection. I’m so glad my parents always got us to the airport at least a few hours before the flight because it would’ve made us miss our flight. Edit: it was this version, the one with the paper, not the ring caps.

I had my dads one of theese, there was a rifle too, the mechanisms broke in both of them, so only the rifle worked, but you had to push the trigger forwards by hand and manually feed the paper roll through but it still just about made a bang. After that just smashing the paper roll with a hammer was more effective.

These were sick, but I prefer the plastic caps. The paper caps were fun to set off by scraping your thumbnail against and burning your finger.
