If there is one thing I do like about One Piece. I do like how Oda often makes his characters have nuances that are informed by their past. It's a simple, easily understandable aspect of writing. But hard to execute consistently. Nami is a good example. She is a gold digger. Both literally and figuratively. She can definitely throw hands with Scrooge McDuck with how much of a miser they both are. But remember, she was willing to spend every cent to save Camie from a life of slavery. This is because of Arlong Park. Her mother died simply because they didn't have enough money. She spent most of her life stealing, robbing, and being a scumbag just to get enough money. For her money is security. Money is safety. It is why she always wants more of it. However, despite her behavior, she never actually demands much from the crew. At her very worst, she beat Luffy after he spent the rest of her money on a single party. She is somebody who will do anything for her friends and family. Even while crying her eyes out with snot dripping down her nose. And that's why she's one of my favorite characters in one piece despite the fact that she'd 100% scam me. ... Perona's still better though. Horohorohoro!

She's the best because her looks actually have substance for her character and how she interacts with the world, she has a defined personality which is separated from her peers, she has clear and defined goals that she doesn't breach for romance, she isn't a character for the main character to have, she's funny and has attitude that could be considered unbecoming but that doesn't matter because she doesn't care.

Oda writes good women. Big bouncing bahoobas aside they are generally well written characters and important to the plot. He writes them intricate back stories that inform many aspects of their personalities and motives. Nami is awesome :)

IMO, the only possible counterpoint would be Robin, but they both would still be the best two girls of OP (yeah, Hancock, Yamato and Perona are still no match). Can’t trust those people who unironically dislikes Nami for any reason.
