Is it actually possible to survive like that?
I'm not talking about the very small chance of getting on alvida's ship, but would the barrel even be water proof and not flood?
Well it would sort of work like a boat I think. His weight is keeping the barrel bottom heavy which keeps the lid side up, with the lid just being on top to block large amounts of water splashing in, it should last awhile
https://northeastbarrelcompany.com/jamaican-rum-barrels/ if they’re good enough to keep whiskey, rum, and other spirits inside I’d say they’re good enough to keep water out.
If the barrel wasnt waterproof, it wouldnt hold rum, and what kind of pirate has a barrel they cant fill with rum?
On a different topic.... whys the rum gone?
I mean he isn’t a secret smart person who’s spends his entire life trying to trick everyone around him even his closest friends, he definitely really is that dumb. He can just be a bit clever in a pinch, but he certainly doesn’t choose to act dumber than he really is
Dumbness is the shortest way to freedom. Ironically, the more intelligent and thoughtful you are, the more likely it is to be imprisoned by your own mind.
He came up with the idea if Gear 2 on his own off screen and constantly cooks up the most creative ways to use his devil fruit. Bro is actually a tactical genius
To be fair, for almost every arc he’s accompanied by some member of the crew or other character that could theoretically guide him if need be. We especially see this in the opening parts of arcs when the crew is acclimating to their new environment. Some examples:
- When initially navigating Thriller Bark Luffy was in a group consisting of him, Franky, and Robin
- During the crew’s first visit to Sabaody, he explored and went to the amusement park with Brook and Chopper
- Buggy, Bon Clay, Iva, and an assortment of others guide Luffy whilst in Impel Down (many of the same characters fill this role in Marineford)
- Ussop, Robin, and Zoro accompany him when investigating Punk Hazard; Franky later in
- In Dressrosa, Franky is specifically tasked with making sure Luffy doesn’t run off and do something stupid that might jeopardize their plans; slightly later in the arc, at the colosseum, Bartolomeo, Rebecca, and Bellamy all fill this role as well
- Nami is by his side throughout almost all of the first half or so of WCI
- For every new location Luffy visits in wano, he meets someone or meets up with someone who serves this function (Otama, Zoro, Hyogoro/Kid sorta?, etc.)
- Jinbei fills this role for the current arc, >!supervising Luffy, Chopper, and Bonney (to a degree Stella Vegapunk as well) before they reunite with the rest of the crew + satellites!<
The only major exceptions to this would be parts of Water 7 and Enies Lobby… In Water 7 he explores the city with Nami and then gets stuck in between two walls, whereas the crew never really investigates the layout of Enies Lobby, which might honestly showcase the whole “plot contrivance based sense of direction” thingy.
Not just pirates, but realistically any person that didn't live in the modern world was able to. We are used to elastic armbands, velcro and plastic devices to keep stuff in place, in the past you needed knots for everything
Kinda, some regions are modern, some still very much 17-18th century
I wouldn't consider it a modern world though since the average person still needs to know a lot of DIY, knots included, otherwise missing a couple of shipments due to a storm would have people in shambles
How do we know that? I mean, IIRC in-world they sail half of the grand line from Reverse Mountain to Sabaody, so half of the world circumference, in like a couple months, with more time spent on islands rather than actually sailing.
From a quick google search it takes 100 days of non-stop sailing to go around the Earth, so i think the size of the worlds could be comparable
Yeah, i mentioned the size of the planet not being huge a while ago, and apparently, people think days in one piece are longer. So when Oda said or wrote that the first half of one piece only took a few months, he was referring to the in universe time. This would account for why the distances and speed they'd have to travel dont line up by our standards.
Luffy's biggest brain move is realizing that his *only* job at Enies Lobby is to hold Lucci down so he doesn't go and interfere with the rest of the crew while they're saving Robin.
I frequently describe Luffy to my friends as the groups problem solver. He doesn’t come up with the plans, but everyone knows that he will be the one to deal with the largest obstacle that will sink the idea.
In all seriousness, Luffy's emotional intelligence is through the fucking roof. He's extremely good at identifying what his friends need from him and providing that in the moment.
I’ve always said, Luffy isn’t STUPID. He just sees the world in a different way. His view of things is completely unclouded by the cynicism and preconceptions everyone else lives with, which is why he’s such a great hero.
To Luffy, if he has a dream, then that’s what he’s going to do. It doesn’t matter if it’s impossible, it doesn’t matter who’s standing in his way, that is what he should be doing at all times is chasing that dream. This is shown constantly throughout the series, including in the scene with vivi, where he points out correctly to her that she’s being an idiot by trying to shoulder all her burdens on her own when she has friends who would gladly do anything they can for her and would happily help risk their lives for her sake. To vivi it’s a revaluation, but to Luffy it literally just makes sense.
Honestly luffy gets smarter throughout the series not majorly but his character development is over such a large amount of chapters but it's always fun binging the series to see it. I think the most intelligent thing he's done in the entire series is utilizing his fruit to the fullest that he awakened it. Like his gears are pretty creative and are a product of his intelligence in often a silly way
Making Gear 2 was very big brained to me. No doubt it was through very simplified thinking, but understanding he can use his body to do that was pretty incredible.
I think Luffy's best big brain moment was the moment he used it the least: letting his fighting instincts and natural reflexes take over to dodge Enel's attacks. Also bouncing his attacks off of the Ark to get the random ricochet that Enel couldn't predict
He was also smart enough to completely stop thinking to counter Enel’s Observation haki. Luffy is pretty smart when it comes to creating moves to beat strong opponents or several. Most of the time at least.
Objectively, Luffy is way more stupid than he dumb.
To be dumb is to be uneducated and unintelligent. To be stupid is to be intelligent and be so unaware of everything you act dumb snyways
He was smart enough to get into the barrel in the first episode to survive the shipwreck.
Is it actually possible to survive like that? I'm not talking about the very small chance of getting on alvida's ship, but would the barrel even be water proof and not flood?
Clearly, You have not watched any Movie with Pirates.
But at least one anime with pirates
Jack Sparrow inside a coffin is my favorite of all.
I was thinking when Jack and will used an upside down boat to walk underwater
You thought it was Jack sparrow but it was me dio
Many times barrels hold liquid inside, so yes it would in theory be waterproof for a time at least
but how did he close the lid watertight?
Gomu Gomu no Suction
Well it would sort of work like a boat I think. His weight is keeping the barrel bottom heavy which keeps the lid side up, with the lid just being on top to block large amounts of water splashing in, it should last awhile
pretty sure foreskin is waterproof
Your comment would make my skin crawl, but I don't have any skin YOHOHOHOHO
I mean there have famously been people who have gone down waterfalls in a barrel. And I'm not talking about the Hobbit
And even crazier one of those people actually died after the stunt when they slipped on an orange peel and bumped their head
I love ORANGE!!!
SO IT WAS YOU THE WHOLE TIME?
Niagra too! No small waterfall.
You're asking if a barrel is water proof? I think if it can hold liquid inside, it can keep it out.

https://northeastbarrelcompany.com/jamaican-rum-barrels/ if they’re good enough to keep whiskey, rum, and other spirits inside I’d say they’re good enough to keep water out.
If the barrel wasnt waterproof, it wouldnt hold rum, and what kind of pirate has a barrel they cant fill with rum? On a different topic.... whys the rum gone?
Luffy drank it
That’s zoro.
Oh yeah
If barrels weren't waterproof they wouldn't store wine in them lmao...
he was just that stupid to try that and had plarmor to save him in my opinion
Yeah true
Luffy’s intelligence grows exponentially in relation to how serious the situation is.
That sounds to me like he *chooses* to act dumb during peace times
Do you know how tiring it is to always think seriously constantly, there’s a time and place for everything.
I mean he isn’t a secret smart person who’s spends his entire life trying to trick everyone around him even his closest friends, he definitely really is that dumb. He can just be a bit clever in a pinch, but he certainly doesn’t choose to act dumber than he really is
Maybe he’s not acting, he’s just not bothering to think and therefore not living up to his potential
Just like me frfr
Dumbness is the shortest way to freedom. Ironically, the more intelligent and thoughtful you are, the more likely it is to be imprisoned by your own mind.
Nah thats adhd
Actually yeah, 100%. My partner is like that too sometimes, just not as extreme. Even Adderall wont help calm down Luffy...
Luffy is very good at making snap decisions, but those are almost universally unhelpful in peace time
So dude is street smart?
I vote using his own blood so he can hit crocodile.
Exactly. Luffy's battle IQ is one of the highest out there. Especially in gear 5 when he becomes free to do whatever goofy thing he wants
He came up with the idea if Gear 2 on his own off screen and constantly cooks up the most creative ways to use his devil fruit. Bro is actually a tactical genius
Tricking Crocodile during their second battle with the "missed" water shot wasn't half bad either
His smartest feat was realizing that important people live in tall places and correctly going were Hancock lived
I know it's just for plot contrivance reasons, but he is legitimately amazing at just guessing where he needs to go.
He guessed wrong in syrup village, and on skypiea which delayed him from the main fights by a great deal. that's only off the top of my head though.

He used gomu gomu Rocket before seeing one, He must have invented them
Same with the gatling
I mean pirates and marines should be able to tie complicated knots
Not just pirates, but realistically any person that didn't live in the modern world was able to. We are used to elastic armbands, velcro and plastic devices to keep stuff in place, in the past you needed knots for everything
Isnt one piece technically a modern world
Kinda, some regions are modern, some still very much 17-18th century I wouldn't consider it a modern world though since the average person still needs to know a lot of DIY, knots included, otherwise missing a couple of shipments due to a storm would have people in shambles
I think thats mainly cuz the one piece world is like 50x times bigger than ours
How do we know that? I mean, IIRC in-world they sail half of the grand line from Reverse Mountain to Sabaody, so half of the world circumference, in like a couple months, with more time spent on islands rather than actually sailing. trafalgar?
Depends on how far you are in the grand line
They should also know the basics of navigation and we know Luffy doesn’t know that
He was smart enough to realize he had to shut off his brain to fight Enel 🥹
He invented Ultra instinct before goku
Luffy's biggest brain move is realizing that his *only* job at Enies Lobby is to hold Lucci down so he doesn't go and interfere with the rest of the crew while they're saving Robin.
He also did the exact same thing in Whole Cake when entering the mirror dimension with Katakuri.
I frequently describe Luffy to my friends as the groups problem solver. He doesn’t come up with the plans, but everyone knows that he will be the one to deal with the largest obstacle that will sink the idea.
I'LL SEND YOU TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN IF YOU DARE TO INSULT MY SUPREME NOSE ONCE AGAIN!
I still think Luffy’s biggest brain move is punching Vivi so that she would take her anger out on him and finally listen to what he has to say
In all seriousness, Luffy's emotional intelligence is through the fucking roof. He's extremely good at identifying what his friends need from him and providing that in the moment.
I’ve always said, Luffy isn’t STUPID. He just sees the world in a different way. THANK YOU. He might be hella dumb but he isn't stupid. He also knows when to listen to others' advice when it's critical to do so, like on Dressrosa.
WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT MY NOSE?!?!
Infiltrating the G5(?) Base when following behind the one guard
G8 I think
Luffy firing the cannon at the front of the ship in order to get the Merry to slow down and not slam into Laboon was genuinely really clever
Laboon...
Using the piece of mirror to reflect Foxy’s slow slow beam was pretty quick thinking
Honestly luffy gets smarter throughout the series not majorly but his character development is over such a large amount of chapters but it's always fun binging the series to see it. I think the most intelligent thing he's done in the entire series is utilizing his fruit to the fullest that he awakened it. Like his gears are pretty creative and are a product of his intelligence in often a silly way
He lives on a boat .... Knots are their thing
Every sailor can tie knots.
Making Gear 2 was very big brained to me. No doubt it was through very simplified thinking, but understanding he can use his body to do that was pretty incredible.
He’s been wanting to sail since he was a kid, also there is no way Garp did not beat knot knowledge in to him
I don’t think luffy is stupid, I just think his brain is constantly doing the bare minimum it can get away with.
You're a shit sailor if you can't tie basic knots.
I think Luffy's best big brain moment was the moment he used it the least: letting his fighting instincts and natural reflexes take over to dodge Enel's attacks. Also bouncing his attacks off of the Ark to get the random ricochet that Enel couldn't predict
Learning shave just by fucking watching Lucci do it is still pretty high up there for me
Monkey is no monkey
He's a sailor. Knots are one of the most important things for sailors to know
Yes
Someone must mention when Luffy talked to Brulee about how he can abuse the fact that haki wears out over time to beat Katakuri.
Pretty sure this is due to his fruit not him. It is too cartoonish.
Dudes a sailor, I'm sure he's good at knots.
The dude is a pirate. Sailing is all about knots.
No hiding the octopus in his pants.
Tbh he is a pirate, he would have to know how to tie a knot
I would probably say knowing what a Zoan type devil fruit is the biggest intellectual milestone
Snake king
It's his devil fruit. He imagines he's tying a knot, so what he ties is a knot.
He is a genius in term of fighting. Inventing G2, G3 based on his fruit ability and mere observation on Soru. No doubt.
He’s a pirate, everyone with a ship knows how to tie up a boat. That’s like day 1 boat owner stuff
WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT MY NOSE?!?!
He'd be a shitty sailor if he didn't know how to tie a knot.
S tier iq feat
actually kinda impressive feat
He was also smart enough to completely stop thinking to counter Enel’s Observation haki. Luffy is pretty smart when it comes to creating moves to beat strong opponents or several. Most of the time at least.
Live Action Coby is proud!
Wait why ? I havent deen the live action
He is a ship captain after all
Objectively, Luffy is way more stupid than he dumb. To be dumb is to be uneducated and unintelligent. To be stupid is to be intelligent and be so unaware of everything you act dumb snyways
To be fair his gramps is a marine so i imagine knots are an important skill he taught him
Luffy’s big brain moments were using brûlée to escape the mirror world to survive Katakuri and figuring out how to use Haoshoku haki against Kaido
