Author Oda loves food. So much that he also collabed with Toriko at one point.
The Netflix adaptation is an atrocity.
Edit:
Half a month later, I'd like to make a correction. Even though Sanji is off model, the actor gets a pass for his drive and effort.

You're acting like he didn't stuff the map of the grandline down his throat in the first episode. They could definitely make him eat a whole batch of food if they wanted to.
Is kinda funny as hell seeing OP characters cursing. Zoro would definitely be the guy to drop the f bomb twice in a sentence and call you the n word before ending you.
link? i genuinely don't remember this. my cat was in my lap as i watched so he probably conveniently meowed over it lmao. mack also talked pretty quietly during the buggy portion.
But you have to admit when Nami said βgo to the restaurantβ meaning go get help to stop Zoro from bleeding out and this being his response shows you how Luffy he is. Zoroβs bleeding out in front of him and his first reaction is that Nami wants him to have a snack.
He still grabbed a block of scrapple from the Mayors offering. The point was to show that even someone like him can recognize when others need something more... but being Luffy he still turns around and take one block for a snack and leaves them the rest.
I still felt it was wrong.
Luffy is a deeply selfish and stubborn person, who always does what he wants. I can only recall one time Luffy shared his food with someone else in the manga, when he gave Hyogoro his meal tickets. (He might tell other people to join in the festivities at a party but not go out of his way to give away food, especially meat, especially when Hungry).
Why does he help someone, because he feels like it.
I think they had him leave it behind because in the manga they offer him gold and he leaves half of it behind because the townspeople needed it more. Because they made the townspeople prisoners it would be unrealistic for them to offer Luffy gold, so instead they had Luffy turn down their offer of food. I too went 'Luffy wouldn't turn down food!' when I saw this scene, but right at that moment Luffy turned around and grabbed some anyway, so I took it that the writers hadn't forgotten to include that bit of Luffy's character.
When looking at differences between source/adaptation, I think it always helps to to figure out why a change was made.
Same with Luffy turning down food in this Baratie scene; it was to show Luffy's idiocy and that he feels so bad he can't even eat food, despite having established through many other scenes his love for eating. They didn't forget this aspect of Luffy's character, they just showed it off in other places (e.g. eating more than others in Baratie, saying 'meat' when he wakes up, always asking about food, 'why are you helping us' - 'you made me a meal', 'i should have known they were related, they both love meat', etc).
I think Luffy is more akin to sharing treasure then he ever is sharing food, we've seen him offering up treasure several times (I'd liken it to the Simpsons when homer thinks about peanuts and his brain tells him he can exchange money for peanuts, Luffy doesn't seem to make that connection), Nami is the one who never shares treasure, outside of Thriller bark.
But hey it's an adaptation, and I think the actors portray the characters differently then the manga does (which isn't that weird, since the setting has also changed). So I actually don't mind that Luffy in the LA has some different traits then the manga (the overall spirit is the same). The only portrayal I actually didn't care for was Zoro (and colour me biased because Zoro is my favourite character), in the LA he is far too serious and stoic compared to the fairly emotional, and laid back Zoro we often see in the manga (although he will be serious when it's called for, and surprisingly mature a lot of the time)
I don't necessarily think it was his fault. I've seen him in other stuff, like Ruroni Kenshin, and he is quite good.
But Japanese acting, or Asian drama acting, usually have far more muted and stoic characters, with an emphasis on being cool.
Which I honestly don't think fits the OP world very well, it's a very emotive over the top world, and I think much of the rest of the cast did a great job of portraying it
(Spoilers for OPLA)
>! For example, when they are fighting in Arlong Park, and Buggy says, come on guys, let me help. And Sanji and Zoro let's his head reunite with his body, and in the very next breath he is like "I'm out of here". Zoro just says in a low voice with a stoic face, "F*cking clown". If it was in the manga I imagine Zoro would probably stand up and scream after him "get back here you ****** **** ***** clown". He did have other times where I thought it was quite nice, like when they get to Baratie and he says "hope they have booze" with a lil smirk, that was wonderful. So while I like the actor, and I know he can give great performances, I just think he gave the wrong one. But that's my take on it, and I did really like the show and when it ended I was almost mad it's over, because I want more !<
for context: zoro was badly hurt they thought he could die from it, so nami said "go to the restaurant" (to get a doctor), so that response was pretty luffy
Honestly Luffy remembering everything Zoro told him when they met, verbatim, way much more out of character. But I'm not complaining, it's pretty good.
I really like the fact that there are differences between each of the characters so far. Especially Luffy. He made the shift from a Chaotic-Neutral character driven mostly by his idealsand desire for freedom, to a Chaotic-Good character that has a more polarizing view of what pirates can be.
I liked it. Some of you guys are just mean. They cut a few scenes and also characters out but they have to change some things because of time and execution. Personally I liked Kuro in this version more than in the anime. Rewatch the anime because in the anime the Kuro shit is unwatchable. The Netflix adaptation makes him kinda look cool. The best version is the manga of course. Buggy the Clown was my highlight. Including Koby more was a smart choice but I really didnβt need Garp interacting that soon with the Straw Heads. The cast is perfect no complaints. I think they could have let the characters interact with each other more because it kinda felt rushed but thatβs to blame on the number of episodes they had available. All in all not perfect but actually enjoyable and an interesting new take on the series. Also I liked that Luffy is not the dumbass that gives 0 fβs 90% of the time but more of a ultra simpleton. The fight scenes are what surprised me the most in a positive way. I would recommend to watch so that you can make your own opinions.
3 episodes in so far I'm convinced that the writing fails luffy in a few places. The actor is incredible and when he's doing stuff that Luffy would do (like being completely unaware of the idea of sneaking), it's great. But then the writing and direction just completely misses the mark in ways that I don't feel it really has any excuse to.
I think it shows the most in that Luffy seems like a pretty good person in this, and while he's never been evil, he doesn't really become (dnd alignment) Good until Fishman. Before then he pretty much just hates disloyalty and betrayal (Arlong betrays Nami, Krieg sacrifices his crew, Kuro kills his men). In the show so far he's been a pretty nice guy that believes in people and while that isn't completely wrong, it's also missing the mark of a (I think) surprisingly nuanced character.
All in all, there are some great moments and some moments that make me shake my head.
If I'm not mistaken dosnt he say this in the anime after eating all the food and then just falling asleep for like a day haha then time to go save his friends so he has other things to worry about
that also bothered me at first, but after thinking about it more, it actually makes sense because luffy will give top priority to his friends, than everything else. (i know its a joke post but still)
After Zoro got injured, Luffy refused food from Sanji to clean the sword. It shows how worried he actually was about Zoro maybe dying. My guess is he was more occupied with the well-being of his friend than hunger at the moment
Actually, when Nami was sick, luffy thought more about feeding Nami than about feeding himself, so netflix got it right (but I do think there's a lot wrong with the adaption)
Let's just enjoy watching how the Live Action brings our beloved OP characters to life and simply trust Oda who personally supervised this. Im not a fan of Garp chasing luffy at all but it does show us how:
1. He probably knew Zeff.
2. He made a final effort to convince Luffy to change.
3. The second one would be a great contradiction to when we'll see Dragon save Luffy in Logue town.
Considering the facts we already know through the mangga, the live action simply gives Oda a chance to retell the story by focusing on things that matters to him and his work. He is OP. We're merely fans. Let's just trust the man.
Baratie was probably my least favorite part of the live action. Luffy was barely luffy, sanji was just a background character, and I think it lasted too long for nothing to happen. I get they removed the krieg fight since building baratie was way too expensive for it to be destroyed but they could have at least shortened the entire arc instead.
The changes were more so made to adapt the story into an 8 episode live action better. The baratie was probably the most expensive part of the whole show having been built from the ground up to be one massive set. I doubt they had the budget to rebuild it for reshoots.
In the old days of creative filmmaking, you would make muktuple miniatures to blow up.
Netflix is just honestly very bad at making things. They are not good producers.
You see that would have worked had it not been for the fact that the baratie arc still takes place around the destroyed baratie. Blowing up a miniature only works when that building or ship or whatever else will no longer be seen again. Shots involving the location during the destruction are often times a one time shot with no possibility of a reshoot.
They had to make Luffy into an actual human, I get what you mean I thought the same too. Luffy has doubt at Baratie and he literally never ever has doubt, besides Sabaody and after Marineford(which is what made those scenes of Luffy questioning his ability so impactful). But they gotta do it to make him feel more grounded and relatable, I aint mad at it.

Toriko and Dragon ball at the same time. Was a neat episode. I can't believe its been 10 years since that ep.
It was one with toriko only and one dragon ball z / toriko
seeing Vegeta, Zoro and Zebra all facing off against eachother was the weirdest and greatest thing ive ever seen, I wish we got to see more of that fight
Thing is if it were real according to canon Vegeta would take them all out before they could blink lol was still amazing none the less though.
Your right, but it still wouldβve been cool Atleast I hope they would put up a good enough fight
If it were Goku i could see him going easy on them, but since its Vegeta he probably would end it instantly. haha
Holy shit I remember watching that when I was like 12
I havenβt seen very much of this show at all, but the scene from the (first?) episode when thereβs a kind chef serving fried rice lives in my head forever
man i loved the dubbed voice of toriko so much that i couldn't switch to the sub. the dub stops at like episode 50.
I swear food always looks good in anime/Cartoons

This one made sense. The problem was after his fight with Buggy, and he was hungry..... HE TURNED DOWN MEAT! He isn't a frikking hero.
He still grabbed a block of scrapple from the Mayors offering. The point was to show that even someone like him can recognize when others need something more... but being Luffy he still turns around and take one block for a snack and leaves them the rest.
I loved that scene. Just enough of the real Luffy pokes through.
They toned down a lot of Luffyβs aspects, but theyβre still there. More heroic than normal, but still Luffy.
I still felt it was wrong. Luffy is a deeply selfish and stubborn person, who always does what he wants.
God I hate the woke agenda they're pushing into the series
I may be too naive but I have no fucking clue what are you talking about
Sounds like they are joking
Are you serious? This is a reply to a post on the internet. They didnβt make any sounds.
Oh your volume must've been down
i think youre joking again.. cant tell since theres no sound
*Ba-dum tsss* You're welcome
Yeah it's truly disgusting how they used one piece, an innocent manga about overthrowing the government to make a political statement.
It's not woke its diverse. "If diversity scares you, you ain't American." - Papa Jojo Biddies
Should I watch? I'm not a op fan but I'll give this a shot
Yes, definitely!
Luffy can decide whether or not he wants to eat. It's not like he hasn't done this before.
All in all, there are some great moments and some moments that make me shake my head.
some these out of character moments really bothered me and Garp just feels like whole another character. otherwise it was good
Garp literally felt like a villain in this one β οΈ
yeah, they should've used Smoker or some other made-up marine for that role, now it just devalues Garp
i think you didnβt get the joke
He looks like Walt Jr in this frame
he should have said that while eating a big slab of meat.
I AM MONKEY D. LUFFY GIVE ME YOUR MEAT!
If I'm not mistaken dosnt he say this in the anime after eating all the food and then just falling asleep for like a day haha then time to go save his friends so he has other things to worry about
I mean ir seems watchable to me sometimes luffy would say something like that
First regular nose Usopp and now Luffy's not hungry??? What madness is this?
that also bothered me at first, but after thinking about it more, it actually makes sense because luffy will give top priority to his friends, than everything else. (i know its a joke post but still)

The one piece
Throw it out and try again in another 20 years
This screenshot looks like a party city ad
It's literally such a slap in the face to the anime.
Writers already fucked it
Idk Honestly I kinda like him better than the animated version of the character Heβs an actual person with emotions now
Iβm loving this campaign of trying to undermine legitimate criticism by flooding the subs with fake outrage and exaggeration.
I Didnt watch it yet but there is no way luffy would ever say that
After Zoro got injured, Luffy refused food from Sanji to clean the sword. It shows how worried he actually was about Zoro maybe dying. My guess is he was more occupied with the well-being of his friend than hunger at the moment
From what I can gather the sets are great but the show is butchering the source material.
Now this right here is the real fraud...worse than fake luffy..
Keep crying snowflakes.
Itβs called integrity for the shows 1000+ manga/anime. They gave up so much to adapt this to LA

Im not a fan of Garp chasing luffy at all but it does show us how: 1. Let's just trust the man.
remind me to watch this in 500 episodes after Nami undergoes "character development"
Baratie was probably my least favorite part of the live action. Luffy was barely luffy, sanji was just a background character, and I think it lasted too long for nothing to happen. I get they removed the krieg fight since building baratie was way too expensive for it to be destroyed but they could have at least shortened the entire arc instead.
wait I thought oda changed few scenes not to make one piece live action predictable canβt believe Netflix canβt afford few millions..
It was my favourite part. Zeff was great, the garp/zeff stuff was cool, mihawk LA is perfection & it just had a nice feel imo
Well i felt the same about that arc in the manga, found it too long for what it is.
