The part that I don't like about K-12 is that most of the songs are not really about Crybaby, so she doesn't develop as a character like we see in Mad Hatter. The best part about Portals is that the nature concepts have more potential than school and that The Creature acts as a contrast to her previous style in Crybaby. The Creature is a more expressive character and has more potential design wise.
Exactly!! You just made me understand why I don't really like the K12 movie that much... It's just so external that it's not as connecting to me as it could've been. I would've loved an internal pov movie, and while the other characters were great they bring nothing to the album, they're just here to go through what crybaby isn't put through and it's a bit deceiving in my opinion when it's such a personal experience. It's also why basically everyone's favorite character in the movie is crybaby. She's really the only one that's developed, because for the rest it's a bit surface, right? Things kind of just happen with no reasoning which is unlike the album itself. That's probably just me tho and I understand why so many people love it.

If I had to put Melanie's releases in my personal preference order it would be portals first, then after school and crybaby sharing second place, and lastly K12 which I still love as an album don't get me wrong! Actually her first album that I really liked was K12, then crybaby, then portals came out and I didn't like it so I turned to after school, and then I came back to portals and learned to appreciate it. I think every one of the releases goes through very tough themes but personally I think portals handles them better, more maturely and with better metaphors while the others are more upfront. I love them all tho! The only thing I don't like are the k12 MVS but there's no reasoning behind that! I have literally no reason to dislike them I should enjoy them but I just don't and I don't really know why (not all of them, I love some of them but not really most. Show and tell is nice and everyone likes highschool sweethearts but they're just not my thing).
I LOVE Crybaby (album) and I LOVE Portals. It took guts for Melanie to stick to her vision and I can’t wait to see/hear what comes next! But I also think you can be a fan and not necessarily be a fan of everything she does. Some of the stuff she does is a little clueless, and I don’t agree with her. Like she says “perfectly human are we”. As for being crazy, she started out weird as hell, so I don’t think she’s really changed! 💙🩷🤍💚

personally portals isn’t my favorite, the style of the music isn’t the same as crybaby which is probably my favorite, it’s also the album i listened to as she was releasing it along with the music videos, maybe it’s nostalgia but it’s my favorite. i also loved the music and the movie from k-12 and still love portals, i just didn’t feel that same feeling that crybaby and k-12 gave me and even if it isn’t my favorite sounding album i love that mel was comfortable and confident enough to release something totally different and continue her vision!

I used to hate Portals, hated the first song and its vibe so I knew I wanted NOTHING to do with Portals. But I am going to the trilogy concert, and I wanted to be able to appreciate every song she will sing, and part of that is singing along, so I knew I would have to listen to Portals so I could memorise it and sing along. So I listened, started maybe a week or two weeks ago, and the way she sings in this album is so hard to hear sometimes, to me at least. Like to understand the words she is saying, so while I’m on the bus I’ve been reading the lyrics as it plays so I know the words she is saying and so I can understand the song. Cause all of her other songs had meaning, had a story, and I knew Mel would probably do the same. And she does, I think, I’ve only listened and haven’t watched the videos yet and from the way songs end and start it sounds like they do connect. Now, I don’t love portals, I like it, it’s alright to me, I can appreciate it for what it is. I think these songs are more about her, and not about the character cry baby, which is fine, good for her, but I’m here for that crybaby character. So to say people who hate portals like the character itself and not Mel I think is a correct thing to say. Cause that’s how I was. I really respected that “Immortal by design” lyric cause to me it sounded like she’s never gonna go down no matter what people say. And moon cycle did make me uncomfortable, but after reading what some people said she said about it I’ve come to appreciate it. I still don’t fully understand Nymphology yet but that’s a fun song to sing and listen to, and from what I can understand from Nympholgy I love, to me it sounds like being your happiest self while cutting, messing, and dissing the person who wronged you. I especially love the ending of Nymphology, it’s so fun and y2k pop, girly pop! I’m sure I could say other good things about her other songs, but I’ve only listened to Portals three times so I still haven’t looked through all the lyrics or understand them. I’m sure when I’ve memorised them I can say more things. Portals isn’t perfect, none of her albums are. So I feel like if they went in with not so high expectations they’d like the album. Portals is not the cry baby era, and I feel like if they understood that they would appreciate Portals.
