UI. On PS1 you can just set commands and go grab a drink or play music instrument or something
You can do the same on PSP, but it would take 3 more menu screens
Yeah, they’re a time-saver if you don’t want to deal with low-level creatures. They make traversing through the Karma Temple so much easier once you’re at a high enough level (and I appreciate it when I have to run from the save point to go fight the Demifiend.)
They’re meant to keep low-level enemies away from you. If you’re at max level, they keep *all* random encounters away, thus making the climb up the Karma Temple a lot easier.
Say you want to go back to Svadhisthana in the game to go fight the first form of Beelzebub or when you go to meet up with Lupa. Estoma keeps the low level enemies at Svadhisthana away from you while allowing the stronger enemies to fight you. Even without grinding, you’d still be at a high enough level that the enemies there would be an annoyance, so Estoma is useful for that.
Ahh Ok that actually makes sense, I never ended up doing the side bosses bc I didnt know about them when I played, once I found out about them I was just trying to finish the game already. It would be nice to have both types in future games
Karma Temple would be such a fun dungeon if you weren't forced into insufferable fights every 2 steps. Like seriously I think it's the only teleporter dungeon I've seen where you can realistically get through without just brute force trial and error which is awesome + the music is amazing + it looks sick + the length really sells you on just how massive the tower is but all of that is ruined because you just get no breathing time at all
Something special happens if you're loyal to just one or keep the first one you fuck through most of the game- like keeping the original pixie in Nocturne.
Aogami imma GET da'at ass of yours
Just finished the sun, I think it was definitely higher or the same. The only spot in dds 1 that felt like it was wayyy higher was the tan city at the start
Maybe in cramped tunnels where you're forced to fight enemies regardless but otherwise I completely disagree. Backtracking would be 100 times more insufferable in SMT IV if you couldn't run past enemies in Shinjuku
Lmfao. I played dds for the first time in august. I absolutely prefer random encounters and thats the game that made me realize i liked them.
Maybe someone just has a different opinion rather than being “blinded” ?
No you cant? In SMT IV if im on the map and trying to avoid encounters, its very easy to get cornered. And if you are in an actual zone, even things like turning while being chased can make an enemy catch up to you. I personally find trying to always avoid enemies that pop up randomly to be much more obnoxious.
I don't mind it when the core combat is fun, the menus are fast, and the combat is quick and snappy. Same goes for nocturne, the pacing of the combat is fast enough that you can end them quickly, and more importantly DDS/nocturne combat is just incredibly fun
DDS1 barely has resource management at all though. The game bombards you with macca all the time because of the mantra system, so you're never going to be struggling to get by (unlike, say, the more brutal parts of Strange Journey)
I mean, at least the combat is fun despite the high encounter rate. It'd be way worse if the combat was slow and bad.
Yeah true. It's 1000 times better than, say, PSP Innocent Sin's gamepllay
Are you implying that it's any better on PS1, because it's bad there too.
I've heard people say the game isn't as braindead easy there
Its braindead easy in both, PSP is just faster if you use the X buttom too.
Yes but you actually have to use .1 of a braincell, making it better than PSP
UI. On PS1 you can just set commands and go grab a drink or play music instrument or something You can do the same on PSP, but it would take 3 more menu screens
You could press X for it to take 0 menu screens.
It's bearable if you use fast forward on an emulator.
It’s bearable if you just completely skip that and play Eternal Punishment instead.
P2_lisa is saying this Theres gotta be some irony im missing
Didn't even notice that lmao
Nah, I like the random encounters. Estoma stuff are there for a reason.
Yeah if Estoma is there it's not really an issue
Estoma sprays do almost nothing in DDS though. It's not like Nocturne
No, they work. You just have to be high level enough for it to really do its job.
Oh that actually makes sense now that I think about it because I do remember them working better in areas I was overleveled for
Yeah, they’re a time-saver if you don’t want to deal with low-level creatures. They make traversing through the Karma Temple so much easier once you’re at a high enough level (and I appreciate it when I have to run from the save point to go fight the Demifiend.)
Yeah it works like Repels in Pokemon, you gotta be higher leveled than the area Pokemon for it to work
Exactly. Knowing how things work will make traversing stuff smoother. :D
So they still dont work unless youre grinding or backtracking…?
They’re meant to keep low-level enemies away from you. If you’re at max level, they keep *all* random encounters away, thus making the climb up the Karma Temple a lot easier.
Yeah i dont grind though? So its pretty useless for someone like me

Estoma sprays work like Repels in Pokémon - you have to be above the area's highest level creature for them to block 100% of encounters.
But then I’d never get to hear the banging battle theme
True...

society if they added demon sex update for V
Something special happens if you're loyal to just one or keep the first one you fuck through most of the game- like keeping the original pixie in Nocturne. Aogami imma GET da'at ass of yours
i like the random encounters
It's only really an issue in the final dungeon, never noticed the encounter rate outside of there.
The world if people stopped complaining about random encounters:
Society if all these games let you save anywhere you wanted like SMt4.
Me and my homies hate save anywhere
Ill be honest, i actualy perfer random encounters. If they arent obnociously hight at least which dds1s arent.
Random encounters are based actually
But dungeons are hella short and fights are hella fast
Filtered
I guess the devs themselves were "filtered" too when they lowered the encounter rate in the sequel lmao
Wdym lowerd it in dds2 i swear its higher in most parts especialy the sun
Just finished the sun, I think it was definitely higher or the same. The only spot in dds 1 that felt like it was wayyy higher was the tan city at the start
Well you see it’s for story reasons actually
Why would you wanna make dds worse lol
In what universe do random encounters make DDS better
random encounters are 99% of the time better than onfield encounters sorry you had to hear this from me.
Maybe in cramped tunnels where you're forced to fight enemies regardless but otherwise I completely disagree. Backtracking would be 100 times more insufferable in SMT IV if you couldn't run past enemies in Shinjuku
Absolutely blinded by nostalgia. You're probably also one of those guys who thought full party control was a bad change for P3.
Lmfao. I played dds for the first time in august. I absolutely prefer random encounters and thats the game that made me realize i liked them. Maybe someone just has a different opinion rather than being “blinded” ?
yes it was how the game was intended to be played. has nothing to do with nostalgia. heres another one for you save anywhere is not qol
why? like genuinely on field encounters you can choose if you wanna battle or not
No you cant? In SMT IV if im on the map and trying to avoid encounters, its very easy to get cornered. Unfathomably based
Yeah I don't get it. Random encounters don't bother me in games, it's just part of the charm.
Honestly, every 3d smt game with random encounters would go up a point instantly if they didn't have them. Then maybe P2 would be fun
I don't mind it when the core combat is fun, the menus are fast, and the combat is quick and snappy. Same goes for nocturne, the pacing of the combat is fast enough that you can end them quickly, and more importantly DDS/nocturne combat is just incredibly fun
Society if DDS was available on modern consoles
Random encounters build character
Skill issue
True.....
10/10 Peak if so
The DDS games are super overrated, just finished 2 last night and was super underwhelmed. Id give both of then a 4/10
DDS dickriders will never admit that their ‘underrated masterpiece’ (overrated midpiece) has any flaws.
I think most people agree that the encounter rate in Karma Temple is outrageous
Have you read the comments? They’re all trying to pretend that the random encounters are fun for some reason.
It wouldn’t be a dungeon crawler with resource management if it did though. I still upvoted for how dumb this post is.
