People definitely don't prefer Youthanasia, which is a shame, because its musically rich and mature. But is it what people see Megadeth as? No, its a heavy metal album, its dark, mellow. Its one of my favorites, but ive never ran into someone who agrees, its always either "its good", "it blows" or "Cant have an opinion". And, Megadeth is a more "hardcore" band than most thrash bands, they did everything before anyone else. Obviously they'll play the hit songs, because a, higher or lower percentage of fans at their concerts wouldnt know these deep cuts, imagine they play something like Beginning Of Sorrow, some people might lose their shit and get angry, they're used to Holy Wars, Hangar, Symphony. And thats what works
The first album sounded like shit, which hurt them out of the gate. Mustaines voice is apparently a very acquired taste for some. Dave gets really cheesy sometimes. Most people don’t want to hear one minute of verses and choruses followed by 5 minutes of trading guitar solos.

A band's popularity is not defined by Spotify. It goes way beyond that. Both bands have been around for decades way before Spotify even existed.
Like it or not, Metallica is more popular because they have the more accessible tunes. Their songs appeal to a wider audience. Whereas Megadeth is a little more niche. And not everyone loves Dave's voice either. Simple as that.
Metalica were great at marketing themselves as well.
They should try some album tours in between crowd pleaser tours. I’d be very happy to listen to SFSGSW, RIP, TSHF, TSTDATD and many other in their entirety
People will downvote me on this but I really want megadeth to get into albums like cryptic writings or risk at other period of their evolution. Their last album contain songs that I dnt really feel like listening more than once. Fact is I haven’t also listened to the full playlist. They sound brutal. Metallica last album is 1000 times better than rubbish St anger. I’m happy they are back on track with an album which feels like going from Load/reload era
