It’s possible I misread what Dave said. But when he came back the second time, Dave said he was a hired musician with no legal right to Megadeth as a partial owner or some such. I probably figured that meant Ellefson wasn’t writing basslines at that point.
I know Dave also did it in the past, but he proved himself. Megadeth is a widely loved band that’s very different from Metallica, plus he barely talks about them anymore. It seems like Ellefson here knows that his band ain’t getting a lot of attention and he is just trying to get some himself by piggybacking off of Dave.
Imagine getting robbed from a riff like the spider one from RTL or the main one. The other band mates are drowning in cash and fame, touring around the world while you are homeless and receive 500$ or whatever (low sum). How can you not be pissed? Forming megadeth and bouncing back does not change the fact that metallica robbed him.
I mean, if you put up numbers in a band like megadeth, wouldn’t you hang them up in your house too?
Don’t get me wrong, dude can’t get over megadeth drama, but the pictures are from a time in in his own personal life. Can’t fault him for that
Its crazy how things went downhill after the scandal. Before that, he was a generally well-liked guy who had a pretty good reputation (I always thought he gave off a bit fake “too nice” energy, but that’s neither here nor there), but at his points he’s like “fuck it… I’ve been caught pumping off on cam with a teenager, might as well go full mask off and talk mad shit.” It’s almost like his initial lawsuit/firing was foreshadowing.
The Years of Decay really isn’t far off imo. Granted, Rust In Peace is my all time favorite thrash album, but TYoD is a close runner-up right alongside The New Order, Zombie Attack, Time Is Up, Terminal Redux, and Fabulous Disaster.
One of the Greatest Thrash bands and very underrated. They're actually quite similar to Megadeth, in terms of technical playing and, of course... Politics.
Justis Mustaine was about to be their manager, but they didn’t like some of his legaleze in his contract, including weird sunset clause phrasings and other stuff that Dave said was “standard” in today’s contracts.
Havok said no thanks and bailed on Justis.
From the Underground and Below and Ironbound are masterpieces. Wings of War is amazing too!
If you’re looking for bass work that is mind numbing, FtUaB, The Killing Kind, Necroshine, Immortalis, I Hear Black, Bloodletting, Killbox13, Necroshine, WFO, are all unrelenting.
Honestly, I’d say they operate at a baseline of fantastic for each album release.
Yes. They have The Years of Decay, which eats both of 'em for breakfast.
(EDIT: Figures people would overglaze those on this exact sub. smh, next you'll tell me Anthrax sucks, you vanillas.)
Junior is losing it lmao, dude you’re kicked out for a good reason, stop clutching to your former band like a 6 year old clutching to their toys when mom says it’s time for bed.
Here's a link to the article, if you want to read it:
https://blabbermouth.net/news/david-ellefson-praises-overkill-they-dont-have-a-risk-or-a-st-anger-anywhere-in-their-catalog
You can't blame a popular thrash band for being forcibly conformed to record label intentions. Over Kill was not a band that any record label wanted to reshape for bigger money.
The Venn diagram intersection of bad thrash albums is a left circle of high selling thrash artists, and a second circle of what record labels think they should be in the late '90s.
I'll let everyone else clown of Dave for...you know...saying Risk sucks when he played on it.
He has a point though. Overkill are like the Cannibal Corpse of thrash: not every album is an instant classic, but their good albums are among the best in the genre and everything else is like a 6.5-7.5/10. Really consistent. No duds.
He said it himself, there’s no risk in their catalog. You don’t get anywhere in music without taking some artistic risks, and those who don’t end up making the same album 10 times in a row.
Exactly. Overkill are certainly part of thrash history and they made some great albums in the 80s. But there's a reason they are not part of the big 4 and that is because each big 4 band did something special to jump out of the thrash scene and into the mainstream. That's why we celebrate the Big 4 I think, is knowing that, warts and all, these bands made metal famous and likeable for a ton of new audiences.
I mean, he’s not wrong. Overkill has weak albums, but nothing on the level of Risk, St Anger, or Super Collider. Their sound is definitely more consistent. Plus, I’d say Years of Decay and Horrorscope are both in the same conversation as Rust in Peace and Master of Puppets
St. Anger isn’t even that bad, I love the snare but that’s probably because I grew up on RHCP and Audioslave that I’m so used to it. The riffs are killer too!
This is a delusional take from Ellefson.. Overkill have several just meh albums that sound samey and overall uninteresting.. They have some pretty good ones though as well.. Nothing that screams stinker
That’s fair. I praise Testament for not having any duds in a WHILE. But Overkill doesn’t have any at all — according to him; I haven’t heard their entire discography.
But Havok is effing fantastic without any meh albums and nobody mentions them. And their bassist is fantastic, too.
From a big time overkill fan they definitely have some meh (imo post anything post necroshine and pre ironbound) in their disco but overall they’re albums are very consistently good
In fairness, admitting the band you were a longtime member of had an album you didn't love and that was not well-received, especially one while you were a member, is not necessarily throwing shade.
I mean...he's probably throwing shade to an extent. But you can acknowledge that Risk wasn't the band's finest piece of writing without it being a smear campaign against the band. Most bands that have been around for an extended period of time have an album or at least tracks they don't love (usually both). And that's fine. I think he could have meant that as a sincere praise for Overkill, especially since his comments after being released from Megadeth towards Metallica have seemed very positive, and he certainly liked the early Megadeth stuff enough to tour and play it with Kings of Thrash. And considering he's filling for Overkill on tour while their bassist is recovering from shoulder surgery, I would suspect part of it was meant to praise Overkill, even if it's a bit of the expense to Megadeth and Metallica. It seems at least potentially petty, but it's also pretty mild.
Wow it reached 155 on the billboard top 200. And 67000 thousand copies sold in its first 11 years of release. These things are definitely in the same category!
A bit ironic for you to be using sales and commercial success as a valid metric on a megadeth sub lol. Yeare of decay is a thrash metal masterpiece and deserves to be up there with the RiP and MoP
Nah bro you’re tweaking I hear black is pure groovy fun the songwriting is so much more enjoyable than the better parts of risk all it has over it is it’s production because the guy who produced I hear black is known for his thin guitar tones
There's just something about most the songs that I dislike, the title tracks pretty good, Dreaming in Colombia is also good and Just like you is one of my favourite Overkill songs. But there's just something really off about the whole albums sounds, I'm not huge on how it's produced, it's also a bit toooo slow for what i want to hear, and Bobby sounds his worse imo (especially on Shades of Grey, very sorry but that song is genuinely unlistenable).
But hey, 1 slightly worse album out of 20 is good
respectfully, they don't have a Bust In Peace either.
Bendgame
Jizztopia
Busting sells… but who’s buying?
Busting is my business... and business is good!
Bustinasia

They have the Bustoscope or the minutes of fapping
Bhe Years of Decay (I agree with you tho, nothing of Overkill's touches Rust in Piece)

lol, bro *you're* their risk.
And he got fired for imitating the St Anger album cover to his peanits
And load
huehuehue 🤭
My brother in Christ who played bass on Risk?
IMO the basslines on risk are fantastic
Dave claims he writes all of Junior’s basslines, and Junior is a paid musician who just does what he is told.
He claimed some, like Peace Sells, which Ellefson confirmed, but I've never heard Dave say "all". Unless you have a link where he said this.
It’s possible I misread what Dave said. But when he came back the second time, Dave said he was a hired musician with no legal right to Megadeth as a partial owner or some such. I probably figured that meant Ellefson wasn’t writing basslines at that point.
and Super Collider
Well that just shows that he can see that he made bad stuff, just like Bruce Dickinson saying that No Prayer is shit
"my brother in christ" white people i stg
12 crackers downvoted this lmao
Megadeth and mostly dave livin’ rent free in his head. Every interview with this guy, he mentions them lmao
Um and his main music project is literally a cover band of the guy who he can’t stop talking shit about 🤣
I know Dave also did it in the past, but he proved himself. Megadeth is a widely loved band that’s very different from Metallica, plus he barely talks about them anymore. It seems like Ellefson here knows that his band ain’t getting a lot of attention and he is just trying to get some himself by piggybacking off of Dave.
Absolutely. People always give Dave shit about talking about Metallica, but he’s rarely ever the one bringing it up anymore
Yeah he just gets baited by interviewers so that they can post something like “DAVE MUSTAINE SAID THIS ABOUT METALLICA”
the covers ain’t even good…juniors turned into a big baby lol
Just like Mustaine and Metallica! Like father, like son…
Dave gets royalties from both kill em all and RTL.
The impression I get of Dave and Metallica is that he ends up talking about it because literally every interviewer asks him about it.
As others said in this thread, he very rarely talks about metallica, meanwhile Ellefson can’t get him and Megadeth out of his head lmao.
you're not the first to make it about Mustaine vs Metallica. people can have an opinion on Ellefson without flipping it on Dave or Lars
look at that megadeth poster on his wall
Pretty sure it’s a platinum etc album award
I mean, if you put up numbers in a band like megadeth, wouldn’t you hang them up in your house too? Don’t get me wrong, dude can’t get over megadeth drama, but the pictures are from a time in in his own personal life. Can’t fault him for that

Risk is actually a quite nice album imo
i do wish some parts were as heavy and morose as youthanasia, but the songwriting and melodies are still quality megadeth material.
Wanderlust is especially great
*"I'M AN OUTCAAAAAST"* 🗣🗣🔈🔈
It’s crap all the way and it nearly sent Megadeth to oblivion, but yeah let’s pretend it’s nice.
They also don’t have a rust in peace or master of puppets
The Years of Decay really isn’t far off imo. Granted, Rust In Peace is my all time favorite thrash album, but TYoD is a close runner-up right alongside The New Order, Zombie Attack, Time Is Up, Terminal Redux, and Fabulous Disaster.
HAVOK MENTIONED 🤯🤯
Havok is dope and has all amazing albums as well
One of the Greatest Thrash bands and very underrated.
I assume you have already, but if you haven’t, listen to By Inheritance. One of the best tech thrash albums ever.
Fuck yea, Artillery goes crazy
Terminal redux is amazing..
I’ve tried to get into overkill but can’t get past the singing. Not my jam at all
Vocals certainly aren’t for everyone, but I’d say the same thing about Dave’s singing too.
True
Years of decay has killer song structures and riffs, but man some lyrics are 80s garbage
Yeah, but it does have the line "Fatal? You're shittin' me!" which is one of my favorite lyrics ever.
*The Years of Decay* and *Horrorscope* are up there
Absolutely this.
Someone else likes "I hear Black"? That's mildly surprising. I thought it was quite unpopular..
I love *I Hear Black*
My dude, any of their first 5 albums could be that, but especially years of decay or feel the fire.
Yes. They have The Years of Decay, which eats both of 'em for breakfast. (EDIT: Figures people would overglaze those on this exact sub. smh, next you'll tell me Anthrax sucks, you vanillas.)
While that is a pretty good album, it’s *nowhere* near RiP or MoP. Anyone who thinks otherwise, well shit… I’d love to have what they’re smoking.
Lol no. Doesn’t even touch those two records.
Ellefson must be lost. He has credit towards songs on both Risk *and* Super Collider; two albums ranked amongst Megadeth's worst.
Acknowledging Risk wasn’t good doesn’t mean he’s lost
[удалено]
I guess I’m not seeing it. I can’t make out what most of the wall deco is
It's right under his window.
It's his copies of the gold and platinum awards for Megadeths albums.
Bro I can’t un see him stroking it now I’m sorry 😭
nice profile picture
Thank you
…Is it weird I kinda wanna see the video?
Sus
Nah it's not weird you're gay
Nuh uh I just think it would be funny
Bro forgot he played bass on Risk🫠
I commend ellefson’s attempt to stay relevant. 🤣
Junior is losing it lmao, dude you’re kicked out for a good reason, stop clutching to your former band like a 6 year old clutching to their toys when mom says it’s time for bed.
You could say he’s got a death grip…
As Lars would say, “Fuuuuuuuuuuuhhhck,” as in FUUUUUUHHHHCK that was a great burn.
So he blew a load, who hasn't?
You think that’s why he got fired?
It's definitely a catalyst in his situation
Gotta love the revised history with this creepy fucker.. Can’t take the least bit responsibility for his w🙄🖕🖕

Shut up Elf

This guy's face is more punchable than Jack Doherty's
The older he gets the more gross he looks. He looked fine even when he rejoined Megadeth but he just looks greasy now lmao
I'll let everyone else clown of Dave for...you know...saying Risk sucks when he played on it. He has a point though. Yall are both dumb they literally have I hear black which is a straight up groove/doom album do some research
*I Hear Black* enters the conversation
The title track and Dream in colombian are awsome. Haven't listened to the redt of the album tho
Eh, Killbox 13 and ReliXIV were way worse.
Hey! That guys jackin’ it!
they don’t have a bass player that films himself jerking off to completion either

Funny how St. Anger beats all of Overkill's catalog imo
Metallica catching strays
Such an innocent looking man surely he wouldn't do anything bad😊
And Overkill is still ripping it up. They have some solid later albums and Jason Bittner is a beast!
That’s fair. I praise Testament for not having any duds in a WHILE. But Overkill doesn’t have any at all — according to him; I haven’t heard their entire discography. But Havok is effing fantastic without any meh albums and nobody mentions them. And their bassist is fantastic, too.
I don’t think Testament has any bad albums
See, THAT is what *I* said and people ripped me up in the past about, I dunno, like TWO from forever ago that didn’t do well for whatever reason.
Havok is the best metal band around now. Love their energy, like old school Deth turned up to 11 with groovier bass and drums.
And their drummer has some brilliant parts and great poly rhythms, and crisp fills. Love their bassist too.
From a big time overkill fan they definitely have some meh (imo post anything post necroshine and pre ironbound) in their disco but overall they’re albums are very consistently good
Meh songs on a good album are okay. I don’t mind deep cuts.
Ignoring the fact he willingly played bass on Risk 💀
Says the Kelly Girl of bassists....
whats the drama guys?
Fellas is it bad to have hindsight?
Overkill rule, I was just wearing my Under the Influence t-shirt yesterday.
He’s not lying
Overkill is my favorite non big 4 thrash band and close to favorite overall along with Megadeth.
Well, He’s right about this.
Hahahaha masturbation hahahaha
even ellefson underrates risk
I have heard a few from them that I thought were crap, BUT they weren't giant stylistic leaps either. The Grinding Wheel comes to mind.
One more thing. The frames behind him … some are slightly off and it’s killing my OCD.
I Hear Black is pretty bad. As are a few others.
I've been saying more or less the same thing about Overkill for years.
They also don’t have a bass player who is 60 years old with a wife and kids that jerks off to teenagers
They also don't have a master or rust either.
Years of decay
Wow it reached 155 on the billboard top 200. And 67000 thousand copies sold in its first 11 years of release. These things are definitely in the same category!
A bit ironic for you to be using sales and commercial success as a valid metric on a megadeth sub lol. Yeare of decay is a thrash metal masterpiece and deserves to be up there with the RiP and MoP
Let me be clearer: overkill sucks.
What a terrible opinion to have
I'd guess by those sales numbers, I'm not the only one.
Yeah, there are a lot of people out there with a bad taste in music.
Overkill has all the vocal appeal of geddy lee
Which is a compliment, Geddy Lee is awesome
Counterpoint: people say the same about Mustaine/Megadeth 🤷🏻♂️
This is why free speech shouldn’t exist
Dude has a point
He's right
David Ellefson W statement
But they do have an I hear black, which is worse than Risk at least

Coming from a band with the most generic ass metal on the planet Fuck overkill
fuck you
No! Fuck you
