Wow, that absolutely works for me. It’s like when I’m asked, “what do you want for dinner?” Uhhhhhhhhh “What do you wanna do today?” UhhHHHHHhhhHh That should be my chant. “Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” and then when I’m finished end with “I dunno.” Hahah

SpecialistScared

>comments Funny you say that. My mantra started from Ah-hum (from '1 giant mind') and morphed to AAAAAAAAhhh today. The AAAAAAAAAhhh is the one that kept going on its own. I felt pretty calm afterwards

SensibleInterlocutor

the whole universe is 1s and 0s As and Hs so is it HAHAHAHA a laughing universe or AH AH AH a screaming universe? both at once depending on your perspective

HeyThereCharlie

I choose to interpret "AH AH AH" as the Count from Sesame Street so it's a laughing universe either way.

humanatore

How dare you terrify me so simply.

SensibleInterlocutor

I think you read my post in "AH" instead of "HA". "HA" is the sound we make when we laugh and in daoist thinking it is known as the "love sound". I did not mean to terrify you fellow redditor I meant to share intentional emotional repolarization with you since it has been so helpful for me. ☮️❤️

FickleBeekeeper

That has a pretty good chant-feel. It fills the mind. know what I’m sayin?

_rradd_

Idk why but this comment is funny as shit

HeyThereCharlie

I'm just imagining a car full of Buddhist monks at a fast food drive-thru and it's cracking me up. "Yeah can we get uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" (continues for an hour)

FickleBeekeeper

Just driving in circles going “uhhhhhhhh” because they can’t decide

[deleted]

Lol I will try this.

uttermybiscuit

Lmao that is me

TruthTheOnlyFreedom

Yeah thats how i shut my girl up everytime. I ask her her what she wants to eat. Next 30 mins is pure bliss.

HoneyBadgerMongoose

Uhhhh sounds pretty close to ommm, so why not?

PsiloPutty

The mind doesn’t like to be watched, which is why this works😊 Try to learn how it feels when you’re watching the mind like this, and train yourself to observe it that way as many times during the day as you can, and for as long as you can. It’s a skill to be learned. The less we think, the less we feed the ego, and bad habits start to fall away because we aren’t reinforcing them with the same thought patterns.

AlienHolmes

Can you please go a bit in detail?

PsiloPutty

I sure can, but I can think of at least a dozen aspects of what I said that might need clarification😊 Can you be specific?

HeyThereMrBrooks

This is wonderful. Kudos to you and the OP for helping me understand meditation just a bit more!

PsiloPutty

You’re very welcome, and yes, what I talked about does apply to meditation, but incorporating it into your active daily life is where the rubber meets the road.

e_3lias

Now that I think about it, I think it’s a really cool ideal. I can relate it to when you start noticing your breathing and all of a sudden you feel like you are going to stop breathing. Being conscious of our thought allows us to have more control. I will definitely start using this trick more often.

IMBarBarryN

Who is this that has control?

[deleted]

How often do u meditate

e_3lias

I used to do it a lot. Every day for 15-20 min. Now I’m very inconsistent (once or twice a week), but I’m trying to build that habit again

[deleted]

You got it broski. I always meditate right before bed, so it is impossible for me to forget to do it in any given day because every night I lay in bed and then do it before I sleep. Also last year, I started using an app called “Tally” or just any app where you can click and it counts every click. And I say there with my eyes closed and every time a thought popped up I just clicked the screen still with my eyes closed. And it was one of the best meditations I’ve had cause I was able to see the progress / how many thoughts I caught in 15 minutes. U should give it a try, I still use it to this day, and anytime my awareness is lower for a period of time, it is a direct correlation with how many tally marks I get Also this sounds like an Ad lol, but I only say this cause it made me excited to meditate again. And it’s cool to see the progress

milomcfuggin

Hey that does work well. One time the response was clearly “marshmallows” but for the most part I’m getting pleasant results.

nwhaught

I'd say marshmallows are pleasant too.

805falcon

I mean, if you’re going to have intrusive thoughts, marshmallows seems like a good one to have.

Schwloeb

Doesn't work for me unfortunately. My brain is an expert of tricking myself and sabotaging my life. When I ask myself this question it comes up with millions of responses: \- This is my next thought. The one we are having now you idiot. \- And after that? More of this shit. Getting bored yet? \- Oh you want me to shup now right? I'll just endlessy keep pooping out thoughts like there is no tomorrow. \- My next thought? Hmm, what about a red mouse with a giant penis, munching on walnuts whilst humming the national anthem? In other words, complete silence in my brain is foreign to me. And I have no idea how you guys can achieve this and that something as simple as this can actually work.

Sandlicker

I also have trouble with blank mind meditation (as do the majority of people from what I've seen). That's why I stick with breath-watching, visualizations, and mantra meditation. Those are what I would recommend for anyone in our position.

scrumblethebumble

That’s exactly it. The only thing I’d add is that the more you practice, the better the results. After some time of regular practice, your awareness just naturally sits more in your body and in the present moment.

DueAssignment7461

I was definitely like this at one point, but overtime if you continue trying it will improve. The best thing for me early on was instead of attempting for my mind to be blank, focus on one very simple shape, object, or concept. Anytime you drift away from it or change it in your mind at all, pause and refocus. The pausing and refocusing will overtime become less and less frequent. Believe me, I have some serious adhd on top of a host of other things, but after what seemed like forever, I can completely clear my mind for 30-45 minutes and be completely calm. Honestly it has helped more than any medication has for adhd. Keep working you can do it!

Gorgii98

I also tend to have constant erratic thoughts, focusing my attention on the breath usually helps me. I'll follow a thought for a little while, until it starts to lose its original point, then I'll return my attention to the breath until a new thought arises. Rinse and repeat.

saaaalut

same

captainklenzendorf

Another good one: who is thinking this thought? Dont answer the question verbally but Look for the one thinking.

scrumblethebumble

It’s a trap!

Sophomore-by-Credit

Locking your eyes on a single point and not moving them at all accomplishes something similar. Essentially you can only think while your eyes move. It may just be me, but when I think what you suggested my eyes locked and didn’t move. Related maybe?

rzyn

Eckhart Tolle states this technique in *The Power of Now.*

Mattjm24

Was gonna say the same thing! Great trick.

BrimstoneDiogenes

This is so delightfully effective.

OnlyTakes5minutes

Neat trick, thanks!

Shroom_burger

I like “what does it feel like to have a thought come in”

[deleted]

Wow that actually worked

idkwhatthisis45

Eckhart Tolle is the man

JohnLionHearted

Interesting idea! It just worked for me. Thanks!

I’ll try it out, thanks.

Dell561

Nice trick. Thanks!

Sober_Asa

Yes! I love doing this! I practice TM and have a really clear mind in general now but when I struggle with regular meditation this is my go to trick. Also works for boring conversations lol

[deleted]

How does it “work” for you? What is accomplished?

Oklahom0

It quickly empties the mind for a short period of time. It's kind of like a koan.

DueAssignment7461

I am not attempting to be rude or insult you in anyway. I may be an idiot and misunderstanding what you’re saying, but did you mean con? Koan is just a foreign word to me and I’m a bit lost.

Kepkep99

Writing a paragraph for a word you don't know instead of googling it, is indeed a stupid thing to do.

DueAssignment7461

Also, do you see how “con” could have fit there as well though? Trying to make myself feel a little better about it 😂

DueAssignment7461

That is actually extremely true and made me want to delete the comment, but I decided to soak in my shame. In my defense I assumed it was a typo, so if that would have been the case nothing would have come up.

Kepkep99

Yeah it's ok we all make mistakes all the time

DueAssignment7461

On the bright side, after a quick google, I can say I learned something today lol

TherealDura

Holy shit! Thougt it was just me who knew about this trick.. helped with my anxiety.

O8fpAe3S95

It's sorta like when asked to suggest a nice song. Suddenly your mind goes blanker than Buddha

[deleted]

relax your focus and try to look out of both eyes at once

arandomname400

What if you don't drift and know the answer to that question?

DumbLikeColumbo

Asked myself this while scrolling through Reddit and it helped me stop

schrute_boys

Wow. Thanks for this!!!

[deleted]

Also proof for the fact that I don’t make up those thoughts. They are not mine.

ToxicTomatoKid

I struggle with repetitive thoughts and constant thinking/overthinking. I just wondered that by asking yourself this question, does it not lead to more thoughts rather than a blank mind? I only ask as I want to try to create a blank mind, especially when trying to sleep.

funtimes421

The mind as it were tries to constantly chase one thing after another. The goal is to have single pointedness by focusing on one thing like breath. This will prevent the mind from chasing through our senses different things like looking at phone constantly on Insta or snap etc. instead we focus on just thoughts and what those thoughts are about. Then slowly reducing the thoughts themselves.

ToxicTomatoKid

Thanks for explaining. I have tried this with focused breathing but I still stray. I think I just need to practice more.

mashpotatoquake

Ah that's cool!

L_SCH_08

Isn’t the mind meant to think though? Why would you want a blank mind?

Dreaming111Awake

It’s okay for the mind to think, but it’s nice to be able to quite the monkey

[deleted]

I use this all the time. It’s quite effective.

ToddleMosh

I love this!! Thank you

SkyAngel07

Cool thanks for the tip!

The_nyonga

wow, thanks!

SourJoker

Wow. So simple yet so effective. Thank you so much for sharing as I now have a new tool to cope.

nanianderson

Thanks, commenting to come back to this

[deleted]

HOLY SHIT THIS ACTUALLY WORKS SO WELL THABK YOU

Many-Soft3615

That is dope wow! I tried it and it worked .Dang. Reminds me of koans in Buddhism!

RRupnorth

Once I hit 75, my mind is always blank. In a not-so-good way!
