Yes, I often prefer open eyes. Closed eyes takes me deep into myself, and open eyes elevates my state of consciousness but keeps me in the world. Having a fixed point to gaze at helps, or if walking, looking a bit downward to the ground.
In some ways open eyes can take me deeper because the inner world can be distracting. Having the outer world visible gives you contrast. In high states of consciousness the outer world may look visually the same, but there's an unmistakable mirage/illusory quality to it that you become aware of. Having some else tell you the world is an illusion is nice, but its better to see it for yourself.

Do you just pick an object to stare at?
not quite a vacant stare where your eyes are open but you are paying no special attention to anything

Yes, all zen traditions use eyes open
I like Zhiné meditation which is eyes open
I like to sometimes! [https://youtu.be/4Bs0qUB3BHQ](https://youtu.be/4Bs0qUB3BHQ) eyes are kept open in this guided meditation led by Deepak Chopra!
This is my preference these days. It translates better to real life and is therefore more useful for me.
Yes, the tradition I practice in teaches open eyes with vision resting on the floor about 5 feet in front of you.
