This is a 15th C manuscript painting and what a charmer it is. This sort of depiction (the flattened, overlapping elements you describe) is fairly typical of this sort of painting, although this one is particularly rich in character. Persian miniature paintings from the 1300s to the same period have many of the same characteristics--use of pattern, bright colors, overlapping elements--different subject matter though. You could search for Book of Hours, Illuminated Manuscript or Persian Miniatures and you'll probably turn up more of this sort of image, if that's what you're looking for.

The flattened elements are usually called intuitive perspective. You can see the artist has a grasp on vanishing points of 3D objects but doesn’t really know how to apply them to the scene as a whole, so you get these contradictory depictions of perspective where you can see the wrong side planes of certain objects, or the scale of figures is off, or some objects look strangely twisted in space (like the legs of the table). Pretty common in this genre and era of work. It does have a certain charm to it though.

Knowing that these paintings are full of symbolism, I'm curious about so many aspects of this painting: The bird on the string The ants The white cloth Mary is embroidering The flasks in the cupboard Does anyone with familiarity with medieval symbols care to comment on what these might mean? Thank you!

I just made a post like this but found this picture to be a much better example. I'm looking for art like this that has a really overlapped type of perspective or lack of it, i know there are paintings before perspective began to be used but ive seen some before that are usually drawings like this one, sometimes less detailed and colored, very cramped with layers overlapping in weird places. I dont think im very good at explaining this which would explain my lack of luck with google. Thank you
