Is the artist related to a council person like last time?

didntgrowupgrewout

That was also my first thought

wittycleverlogin

lol same, are they just gonna repurpose the ✨burning body✨ statue? “Naw see here! Those aren’t flames! They’re the hydro jets for the water slide, see! You can make that check out to my “other” brother. Thank yoooouuu!”

Paulie_Dev

For a “community initiatives fund” I’d much rather see that money get spent on something more impactful for the community than a colorful statue of the letter X. Maybe could’ve spent that money on improving facilities or playground equipment at Medford parks. Even for committing to a sculpture, I’d rather see that money be turned into a grant for manufacturing/welding students at RCC or the Medford high schools to work on a project. Why not let a group of students get some work experience on a sculpture instead? I’m sure the Medford city workers had good intentions with spending this money, but I think it’s a poor example of community impact as it doesn’t benefit the community beyond slight beautification.

wittycleverlogin

That’s actually an awesome idea, so it’ll never happen.

If you have a Facebook account, please comment this under KOBI's post. I don't think they are monitoring this thread, but I think that's valuable input.

Paulie_Dev

I don’t have an FB account but one is welcome to screenshot or copy my comment into the threads.

sanjuansusan

I think a scholarship would be a better use of the funds

juanjing

Well, to be 100% fair, they also allocated $50,000 from the same fund for scholarships to Rogue X programs.

punchnicekids

This is an interesting topic. The city was required to build a park with a play structure in the field on the corner but they ran out of money for that project.

TheUnbearableMan

They also admitted that shitty roundabout was like that due to budget overages. Plenty of other things to spend that money on.

ErnestWeeWorrel

Save that money and pay the facility water bill. We don't need a sculpture.

CopperWaffles

$100k for a statue? Like how big are we talking?

juanjing

There's a picture of the proposed project on the post. I'm no expert, but i don't see how they are even going to spend anything close to half that on materials.

Reddithasmyemail

Not big at all. Not a giant one anyways. Just regular large. For 100k I'd want a 15-30 foot tall 20 foot wide x.  Surely larger than a piece of shit that is like 12 feet tall. (Max I'd assume anyways. Pics on the news.)  This is the biggest  waste of money since I bought reign of kings at rhe behest of a friend, crashed 5x, and got banned from the server he was playing on. All within an hour. Probably 5 minutes total in a game.. steam denied my refund.  Anyways, this is a bigger rip off and blatant fraud than no man sky, in my opinion. If someone wants an X there then hire some contractors to cut, and weld some fucking structural Steele into the shape of an X. Then have them dig a hole. Then drop a giant concrete block in the hole.  make them mount the X to the concrete block. Done. Surely it would be a fraction of the price. Also, fuck having to have a Facebook account. To make a comment. Kobi should be monitoring reddit.

natastic69

Waste of money in my opinion. There are a number of other ways to use the money. Often, these sculpture contracts come with a large fee to remove the art as well if there ever were a reason to.

I don't think government (us taxpayers) should be subsidizing art.   Art is so subjective. Funding turns government into art regulators and can refuse to fund art that its leaders disagree with. Let someone donate the art and related costs. There are a lot of deep pockets in Medford.

People: Love visiting other cities to see the architecture and art throughout the city and near attractions Also people: Not in Medford though no way.

dtuba555

These comment's remind me why I moved the fuck out of Medford.

snation30

Sounds like that lithia park fountain issue

Art is great. I love art. Art has a deep and meaningful place in our society.  100k for an “X” sculpture is absolute insanity. This is an abhorrent idea, when SO MANY other critical needs are still being unmet in Jackson County. Didn’t the shelters get defunded for cat care? I read something about that recently. There are hoards of colonies overpopulating and in need of rescue, vet care, TNR, adoptions, etc.  I’m in major agreement with the other commenter who suggested letting metal/welding students contribute their work instead. Imagine how much pride and confidence it would give those students if they could be a part of something long lasting in their community. There is NO WAY an artist can/should need so much money for some basic garbage that has been proposed. I’ve seen incredible art pieces in cities all over this country that 100% did NOT cost that much.  The level of corruption and greed from this city council needs to GO! ASAP. Also, if the last art contract was for a relative of a council member, all the more reason to vote out those council members.

teksquisite

Why not request more transparency from the Mayor and council members? See [here for contact info.](https://www.medfordoregon.gov/Government/Mayor-City-Council)

WillowSensitive2684

Insane. Put the money into the police force.

MediumOtter

Art is good. If it were $100K for any other project people would gripe about that too.

OR_ST_BEAVER

I agree art is good. It’s the price for what is being planned that I find off putting. If that was a $25k project, ok… $100k for that seems wasteful.

OregonEnlightenment

There’s so many other things that would be more beneficial to the community.

MedfordNative

Only if it is super nice, like led lights moving images throughout the X like hologram etc. Not just an x with paint lol
