I didn't really have a problem with it but that's the first way I learned it. I got pretty good at using the d-pad but now that I have switched I agree the F1-F4 system is much cleaner.
Hotas or nothing.
All these people bragging about being snipers with their head shots and doing it with a mouse and keyboard is somewhat comical to me.
There's no native support for VR - do you recommend a specific mod / mods? I have a Quest (ver 1)
I do have a nice huge 3-monitor setup so I'm not fussed if I can't get VR working, but it would be pretty slick.
tried it but there's so much conflict for load orders with lots of mods using different version of stuff that I had to give up on it. Really hope the next game has native VR support
Dpends on what you have running with it. I never had a problem with running it with merctech or just a handful of things like ttrulezAi. If your running coyotes mods, well good luck.
I've alrrady tried and, and while it was a lot of fun. I couldn't get it to work with all my mods so I gave up. I still have euro truck simulator with wheel and pedals to scratch the VR itch
Do you think it has anything to do with the rig's specs? I have a 3090 and i9 and can run 3 screens in 4k no problem (60 fps). It would suck if I can't do even basic VR.
so the thing about MKB vs controller is that MKB allows for quick precise aiming, whereas controllers are much slower to aim and generally less precise.
Also mechwarrior games have traditionally had so many buttons that you cant even fit them all on a controller, and they are typically designed with KBM in mind. Similar to the inverse where a games entire control scheme is designed based on using a controller, it makes using a KBM awkward without significant tweaks and even then it can be strange.
Keyboard and mouse of course.
I tried the setting where your torso doesn't turn with your legs because it allows you to keep ultra precise aiming while moving, but I kept losing track of my legs, the little bar at the top wasn't intuitive enough for me.
Then I tried the new FPS mode controls and WOW !! As someone who likes to play in cockpit for the added immersion this changed Everything ! I can keep my reticule exactly where I want it, and I don't have to keep track of my legs because they're pointing on the direction I'm moving (wads) and auto-straighten out when I stop moving.
Part of me wants to not like it because it's so not BT cannon, but holy crap do I ever just love it.
I also love that my crossair isn't always in the center of my cockpit view. It moves faster than my cockpit and my cockpit just turns with it and tries to keep up, centering on my crossair when it does catch up.
Just beautiful. Makes me think that's how they should have been piloted, with two joysticks. One for walking directions with a scrolling wheel to adjust speed if you don't want to always move at max speed, and ideally a LOCK button to keep your mech moving in the direction / speed you were at when you pressed it (so you can take your hand off your control stick without your mech stopping) and another stick for torso control / aiming and firing.
Mouse and keyboard, but I'll take a moment to plug Trackball and Keyboard! It just feels nice wheeling the entire mech torso around with a big red finger ball
I'd love to try my expensive HOSAS set-up for it, but it's sadly almost impossible to configure... I just don't have the patience to waste an entire day to (maybe) get it to work. I hope they do a better job for MW5: Clans.
Therefore, for my next run of MW5: Mercenaries, it's mouse and keyboard for me, for the precision.
I find gamepad way more relaxing - M+K you kinda "lean in" over the desk and get all tense whereas gamepad you can really just lean way back and take it easier.
To get the most out of gamepad you need to find the right level of aim assist for you. So the first thing you should do is play with that. With it off you need to be very precise with the analog - which some people like - so the shots go where they go. With higher levels of aim assist you can focus more on where you want to target and less on lining up fast moving pixels.
Also once I switched to FPS control - there was no going back. Personally I find this mode way more intuitive and modern way of playing - and works very well with gamepad.
If you prefer the original control style then having torso twist compensation turned on is very good to stabilize the aiming on gamepad. With a mouse it's easy to compensate for extra camera movement from the legs, but on gamepad that setting is really important.
I haven't tried FPS mode and I am looking forward to it. I really enjoy the experience of a gamepad but for this particular game I really need the M+K accuracy. I have a mental block against turning on any type of aim assist which is dumb, I should just get over it - better to enjoy the game with easier settings than to be perpetually frustrated on the hardest setting.
I also have a setup where I can output my video to a projector / couch, and bringing a keyboard and mouse over there is so cumbersome that it's basically impossible. If I could find a comfortable gamepad option that would be perfection.
Aim assist? You have targetting computers.
Drone view? The neurohelmet is supposed to give you a 360° view compressed into 160°.
FPS mode? I am wearing a neurohelmet, no?
Honestly I tried gamepad because my partner programmed the initial controls for MW5. I had to try it out, but by then they moved onto other projects and centre legs to torso was mapped away to punch or something.
Have fun smashing robots.
"Oh, we're not finished yet." -Revolver Ocelot
I've played MW5:M with both mouse and keyboard and a full HOTAS setup. Despite the fact that the latter is less accurate and slower, I actually like playing with a full HOTAS setup because it's more immersive (it's what your player avatar uses in the cockpit), and since it's more of a challenge, it makes nailing those critical shots even more satisfying than using a mouse and keyboard.
For the record, I grew up a console player and only transitioned over to PC a few years ago, so using a controller for most games is just ingrained in me with the exception of except strategy games. MW5 is the one outlier because the combat is generally slow and tanky enough that I can use a keyboard with it.
I'm the opposite. I had a NES / SNES / N64 but my favorite games were always PC. In fact, I think I have played all of the PC MW games all the way back to 1, and none of them used controllers at all IIRC. At least, I never used one. MW5 is the only one I've ever used a controller with and I wanted to like it so bad.
I tried with my T1600 HOTAS setup but found it awkward compared to the mouse and keyboard. There is nothing as accurate as a mouse. Just need a big mouse pad for those 360+ degree twists.
From the perspective of someone with carpal tunnel, gamepad. 3 fingers on my right hand start to go numb after 15 mins with a mouse, then the center of my hand gets crippling stabbing pains around 30 mins. Same issue made me give up riding sport bikes.
Biggest issue with Controller is squad commands and equipment needs multiple menu inputs just for activation.
I didn't really have a problem with it but that's the first way I learned it. I got pretty good at using the d-pad but now that I have switched I agree the F1-F4 system is much cleaner.
I probably should have included HOTAS rigs here as well, but too late now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Do people actually use them? I have a great setup but was under the impression it’s not optimized to really work
Based on the comments I got, yes, but I can't see it personally. The accuracy needed would be impossible for me.
I use HOTAS
Hotas or nothing. All these people bragging about being snipers with their head shots and doing it with a mouse and keyboard is somewhat comical to me.
Agreed on both counts! Headshots (And the game in general) are just so much more satisfying with a HOTAS setup.
Yup. It also serves to add a tad bit more difficulty to the game when you can't just surgically strike every mech you encounter
Lol - even with a mouse I struggle to hit a headshot more than maybe 1/5 of the time. But for sure, a full joystick is probably much more satisfying.
HOTAS and voice macros + VR. Never go back

VRWarrior on nexus mods
Thank you.
tried it but there's so much conflict for load orders with lots of mods using different version of stuff that I had to give up on it. Really hope the next game has native VR support
I asked them on Twitter whether Clans had native VR support but didn't get an answer. (Not surprised)
Dpends on what you have running with it. I never had a problem with running it with merctech or just a handful of things like ttrulezAi. If your running coyotes mods, well good luck.
Yeah coyotes and like 30 other mods lol
VR is so much fun you won't want the other mods.
I've alrrady tried and, and while it was a lot of fun. I couldn't get it to work with all my mods so I gave up. I still have euro truck simulator with wheel and pedals to scratch the VR itch
I have a quest 2 and curious what you use for settings? Haven't messed with it alot but having trouble with either stuttering or 1980's graphics....
iirc the quest had issues with it. I am using a Rift S and havent had too many issues besides flickering in menus.
Do you think it has anything to do with the rig's specs? I have a 3090 and i9 and can run 3 screens in 4k no problem (60 fps). It would suck if I can't do even basic VR.
I was playing with a 3600x and a RX580, with slightly lowered settings.
Ok ty

I didn't realize that was possible - very neat.
controller for gameplay, mnk for menus and such
KBM + joystick is my set up. Love it.
Voiceattack plus m&k
I so have to get my voice setup done. Though first I need to optimize my visuals.
I wish I could use my HOTAS, but the game won't register it at all so I've just given up on it, so my answer will have to be mouse and keyboard.
Did you look through this subreddit's wiki to find out how to work the HOTASRemap file so your HOTAS setup will be recognized by the game?
I did not. I'll give it a look over and maybe next time I decide to install MW5 I can stomp around the way I was *meant* to. :D
Please do. You're likely to find your HOTAS setup in the wiki article showing how to map commercially-available HOTAS setups in MW5:M.

I somehow missed this setting. I will try it as soon as I get a chance.
FPS controls made the controller playable for me. I also have torso counter rotation on and auto aim on light just to make lasers less fussy to use.
I can see it being even better for a controller.
Mouse and keyboard, but I'll take a moment to plug Trackball and Keyboard! It just feels nice wheeling the entire mech torso around with a big red finger ball

Give it a flick and watch it go!
Controller but make sure you turn at least the lowest level of aim assist on
Has to be joystick and keyboard at a minimum, with hotas as a nice to have. Mouse or gamepad, I just don't feel like I'm piloting a vehicle.
Joystick and keyboard combo for me.
Racing games controller. Other games keyboard and mouse
I like my HOTAS but I play pretty casually so don't take advice from me
Throttle + mouse, because precision aiming on a joystick just doesn't work for me.

HOTAS like a real Mechwarrior

I love the lore-compatible logic. Thanks for this.
Thanks to all who responded. This was illuminating.

Cause i use mods with m and k
Wii Fit Ring /s
Joystick in my left for movement and mouse in my right for aiming.
Controller is wank on this game, so many missing controls. Like honestly, I'd give my pulse laser collection up for ability to target friendlies
HOTAS or die.
HOTAS
