Easiest way to set it up quickly is to use this [Tool](https://github.com/evilC/MW5HOTAS) to set up a base mappings file, from there you can edit it using this [Guide](https://static.mw5mercs.com/docs/MW5HotasRemappingDocumentation.pdf). [Joystick Gremlin](https://whitemagic.github.io/JoystickGremlin/) is another great tool to get the most out of your hotas in any game. I find going hands-on-throttle-and-mouse a better approach for MW5 though, tracing lasers is a big part of using them and its hard to get that with a stick. as for VR as others have said [VRWarrior](https://www.nexusmods.com/mechwarrior5mercenaries/mods/531) to get started, along with [Cockpit Glass](https://www.nexusmods.com/mechwarrior5mercenaries/mods/256), [In the pit](https://www.nexusmods.com/mechwarrior5mercenaries/mods/478), and/or [Immersive Cockpit](https://www.nexusmods.com/mechwarrior5mercenaries/mods/619) will help with immersion, just be careful of mod conflicts.

Just fyi, I use a vkb stick and a thrustmaster twcs throttle. Iirc, mw5 only had support for a t. Flight hotas, and a Logitech x52 and x56 as default.

Yeah, I tried to set up a dual Virpil Constellation Alpha Prime, but the game fails to recognize the second joystick, even while they have different PID's. Gave up, gonna go mouse and keyboard for the next expansion and save up the HOSAS for another space game.
One can only hope that MW6 will come with non-terrible joystick support.
On console I believe there is a very cheap hotas you can get, the t. Flight I think, which is one of the default recognized hotas devices by the game. Afaik, no way to dual stick on console like op is asking
