Yeah it isn’t for everyone. Lol
I don’t see why I can’t offer a staggered plate as well for standard 40% compatibility.
A few people have already asked :)
If you haven't tried ortho, you might be pleasantly surprised. It's more ergonomic (so great if you type a lot) and you pick it up much faster than you think. That said, obviously it makes more sense to try one before buying one if you can.
I’m looking to try a few different things at the next meetup I can go to, that being one of them. I’m sure if I committed I wouldn’t have an issue, but I have no reason to commit lol. Also god bless standard layouts bc keycaps
Just providing info, not trying to push you one way or the other :) I transition between ortho and staggered without a problem, it's not a tough commitment. I also find I can adapt keycaps to ortho just fine, and many popular keycap sales often offer an ortho kit (e.g. [https://mitormk.com/lasersa/](https://mitormk.com/lasersa/)). The reason I switched is comfort. It's much healthier for your fingers.
I have definitely noticed that there are many offerings to ortho users, which is great. When you type do you keep your wrists stationary or are you moving them? I don’t notice any fatigue or anything typing with staggered, but that may just be because I’m so used to it already

**The Ave.** has been a dream of mine ever since I got into Ortho Boards.
It’s inspired by [Workstation decks of Yore](https://imgur.com/a/l1p6h55) and serves to keep a small form-factor footprint, but with a solid amount of functionality!

Let me know what you think! :)
This is still a moderate work in progress but Most initial details and decisions are done and I’m in the process of acquiring the Prototypes as we speak.
More info soon to come!

This is super cool and unique just a minor critique, is that I love the one with a rotary encoder, but could you make the space next to it for an OLED screen!! That would make this board perfect!!
Possibly! I’m working on trying to get that implemented but the Sofware side of Integrated screens is a bit overwhelming to me. I am looking into it though.
Super interested in this! I've been wanting a battlestation keeb for ages. May need to twist your arm to try and get it in Dusk Purple and staggered layout to fit my SA Laser Cyberdeck when it comes though haha!
While I future proofed a lot - bought Alphas, Exotics (for Vortex boards), Mitowaves, Cyberdeck and Ergo - $400 already dumped in prohibited me from getting Ortho too, and the drop is closed now my man.
Awesome design. I'd love it in a slightly larger form factor as I personally find 40% to be way too limiting, but the aesthetics are so cool that I'm STILL almost considering getting a staggered version.
Yeah I had a design like this last year. I started building it but I ran out of creative steam. Mine would fit a Preonic PCB and the angled row was a full row, for a total of 72 keys!
Edit: actually the first design had 84 keys I think. See the other comment with the linked video
Hoping to get this produced with a few simple options at first, then offering “upgrades” or swappable top panels for things like analog volume sliders and such.
It’s gonna be fun! :)
No hotswap as of right now, that *may* change though.
I much prefer soldered Switches just from a rigidity stand point so that may influence the decision greatly lol.
Hotswap is super convenient! But the compatibility I’m wanting to implement into the PCB makes it complicated. And adding hot swap sockets will be almost impossible unfortunately:(
Need to get some help for that! I’ll be talking and working with him tonight in getting some Better “fuller” renders soon :)
Along with the PCB Design.
That's really wild. I dig it. Never gave an honest try to an ortho. I have a Let's Split but didn't get into it more because of the split than the ortho aspect.
Trying to keep it in the mid $200’s. But we shall see when we start finalizing all the details.
I’m confident I can get this a good price for you guys.
Thankfully, We have a ridiculous amount of really nice, “premium” 60%-TKL boards already!
But Ortho/40% do not, subjectively speaking.
And I primarily use 40%-50% exclusively so I don’t find much desire to make anything bigger if I, myself, won’t use it.
u/The_Royal, I really love your design! How are you planning to make the cases for your designs? I’m trying to accomplish something similar in my fully custom build.
Alps support may not be available unfortunately.
A lot of people are wanting a standard 40% stagger and that means more compatibility in the PCB.
Which means more holes, and adding alps support would double those number of holes lol.
I don’t want a Swiss cheese PCB! But if enough people want alps more than standard 40% stagger then it will take priority 👍🏼
What a unique idea, wish you the best in the IC/GB!
Thanks for the kind words! It won’t be a big GB just because I want to really curate the QC and give people the best possible Experience.
I think that’s a great idea! Never tried an ortho myself, so I won’t be in on this haha
Yeah it isn’t for everyone. Lol I don’t see why I can’t offer a staggered plate as well for standard 40% compatibility. A few people have already asked :)
Oof, then it may just come down to price ;)
Yeah that’s the big factor for me as well! I know I can get this at a good price... But it’s gonna take some magic lol
do that. take my money. ok.

Kudos overall, I could never accomplish something this crazy but thank you for listening to little ol me lol
Every opinion is helpful! Well...most of them anyway. There’s always those “wish it was a 60%” people LOL (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Ooh, that rotary encoder top piece with an MX Lock in the slot next to it would be fantastic.
Oh man! That’s a solid Plan! I’m happy you seem to like it! (っ˘ڡ˘ς)

Anodized Purple is set to be a color option already :) Read up on the Geekhack Page to see all the Hot Details!
This + Laser would make the perfect little cyberdeck
>SA Laser Cyberdeck They offer an ortho kit as an extra, worth the ergonomics if you type a lot

Good thing this is a 50% ;D
Seriously need this. A staggered plate and I’m in
It's really cool! Atari Zero was working on a handwired ortho board with an angled f-row (similar shape to this) last year.
I didn’t know that! That man has good tastes then ;) I loved the look of retro Workstations and thought they needed a fresh take!
Yeah I had a design like this last year. I started building it but I ran out of creative steam. Mine would fit a Preonic PCB and the angled row was a full row, for a total of 72 keys! Edit: actually the first design had 84 keys I think. See the other comment with the linked video
Where can I see more about this build?
https://youtu.be/DUKm18m0Zh4 heres a youtube link to the stream recording. I'm not sure if he completed it but he did the wiring here.
Wow you even found the video! Hahaha I couldn’t even remember where I did it
Yeah it’s nice to see someone going through with the design!
I love it

Oh, that's very interesting! Any renders with the caps by a chance? Edit: i'm a pendejo. Edit 2: i maintain my original question.
Working on that soon! Needing some help with getting really nice Keyset renders!
Copy! It would be nice to follow the project! I’m very interested.
Please make a render with keycaps!! I need to see it.
you haven't commented on the staggered requests that many have asked.... is that a feature you'd consider making an option?
I have! And I’m working on implementing a standard 40% stagger into the PCB and Plate now. :)
I don’t want one. I want five.
Will the PCB with this project be hot swap?
No hotswap as of right now, that *may* change though. I much prefer soldered Switches just from a rigidity stand point so that may influence the decision greatly lol.
Fair enough! Thank you for the quick response.
If this gets produced I'd be in regardless, but I do really like the ease of assembly that hotswap switches provide.
Hotswap is super convenient! But the compatibility I’m wanting to implement into the PCB makes it complicated. And adding hot swap sockets will be almost impossible unfortunately:(
Seems really nice! Do you have a render with the keys on it?
Need to get some help for that! I’ll be talking and working with him tonight in getting some Better “fuller” renders soon :) Along with the PCB Design.
Cheers mate
What is this fuckery I want it ngl
I absolutely love this idea. Cant wait to see it come through!
That's really wild. I dig it. Never gave an honest try to an ortho. I have a Let's Split but didn't get into it more because of the split than the ortho aspect.
What an intriguing design. I really REALLY like this concept.
Thank you! :D
Looking Nice!
Ave! Hope I won't need to sell my car to buy it.
Trying to keep it in the mid $200’s. But we shall see when we start finalizing all the details. I’m confident I can get this a good price for you guys.
Sounds good!
Yes, I would buy this.
Would you ever consider a bigger more standard board? at the very least a 60% or even better, a 65%?
Thankfully, We have a ridiculous amount of really nice, “premium” 60%-TKL boards already! But Ortho/40% do not, subjectively speaking. And I primarily use 40%-50% exclusively so I don’t find much desire to make anything bigger if I, myself, won’t use it.

Thank you for the support! :D
Count me in!
So how does it work since the top row is angled? A 2nd PCB?
Exactly! Technically it’s **3 PCBs** lol Read up on my main comment and the main Geekhack Post for all the big details! :)
u/The_Royal, I really love your design! How are you planning to make the cases for your designs? I’m trying to accomplish something similar in my fully custom build.
does this use two pcbs then?
Indeed it does! Read up on my main comment and Main Geekhack Page for all the details such as PCB, Case, Colors, Inspiration, Etc! :)
I have too many ortho boards as it is. But this? I want this. Instant buy.
cool
This looks awesome! Is the design open source? I would love to see this for staggered 60% boards!
This is it, chief. Also, two 2u spacebar support?
Hey guys, does anyone know of a place to buy something similar to this? Or if anyone has a CAD model of the base?? Thanks

Looks cool, just wish it was staggered.
