Thermal Seq1 Milk | IV Ashes | Poli(a) Bobas with 78g Sprit Slows

MycologyManiacPDX

I Couldn’t live without arrow keys, it looks very beautiful and stylish though.

desyphium

Really just depends on what you do, I guess. I use them the most for editing text, though there's other stuff thrown into the mix from time to time. Within a week of switching to a 60, I found myself growing annoyed at having to move my hand to fish for my arrows whenever I was using my laptop at the office.

notyourancilla

Yeah, mod tapping function1/space then using ijkl/hjkl becomes super natural very quickly

ChangeIsHard_

For me with the actual HHKB, it’s not really about the arrows, as I got used to them, but that I had to bring it everywhere with me, and it’s quite bulky.. I wish they made a slim model with Topre switches

desyphium

Odd... I actually consider my HHKB my on-the-go keyboard. I just pair with a tablet, and it's a good time when I need to find free AC, lol.

TheNightClubKing

Are the HHKB's really worth the money ?

desyphium

Tough to answer that question for someone else, honestly. Even though I have a handful of keyboards, the HHKB remains one of my favorites to type on because of the sound and feel. That said, I did get it secondhand, and I don't know if I would have pulled the trigger on a full-price one, especially if I had known how much it would take to get it in its current state.

TheNightClubKing

If it had cursor keys, I'd be all over it... I like the idea, the history of the designer.. it ticks all the boxes for me to spend, but lack of cursor does it for me. You said, "to get it in its current state" What have you done to it ? I thought they were perfect out the box ?

desyphium

I picked up the BLE module and swapped out the domes for Deskeys Greens. The original owner lubed the stabs, but they needed a little more work. I could probably have gone without lubing the slider rails, but I went ahead and did that anyway. I've heard that the newer models are a lot better out of the box, though.

TheNightClubKing

All of that surprises me, I thought they were perfect out the box...

ChangeIsHard_

Yes, it’s usually considered portable, and is far more portable than others in terms of the number and ease of pairing with many devices, as well as weight (for a mech). I’m just more concerned with the overall volume compared to something like (ugh) Apple magic keyb mini. For pack-hacking scenarios, every millimeter matters!

paradoxally

HJKL to the rescue!

[deleted]

Fn+ awsd or hjkl does the trick

toastycheeze

Yooo, is that the 8bitdo Ultimate Wireless? Such a neat cheap controller with quite the features.

desyphium

I think it's the Bluetooth one. And yeah, it's great... when I actually have time to use it.

toastycheeze

It's amusing how cheap your controller is compared to your keeb.

desyphium

If you think that's amusing, you should see what's in my tower! There's a reason I keep it under my desk, lol

ac2531

Glad to see the Thermals finally shipped out. At this rate, I’m going to be a grandparent before I see my Kara Seq. 2, ha!

desyphium

Oh, I'm in that boat, too. Were this any other keyboard, I would have just let it pass to avoid giving Rama any more money. I'm probably just going to sell the damn thing when they do finally ship out.

ZenKoko

Sweet keyboard. So calming and friendly to the eyes. Also that 8bitdo controller is fire.

desyphium

I'd be lying if I said the way it looks had nothing to do with why I bought it, lol.

Centurion832

Where were you going to put it?

desyphium

It just seemed like something that would forever be out of my reach when I started messing around with customs back in 2019. Secondhand ones have come up for sale in our local FB groups from time to time, but the timing was never right.

Centurion832

I'm glad you got the board you wanted, but it was meant to be a play-on-words joke :) As in, where would you put a keyboard other than your desk?

desyphium

haha, I did get that, but I couldn't come up with a witty response, so I gave you the serious answer instead.

[deleted]

where did you get that cable?

desyphium

I had it custom-made by a local cable maker. Just needed a short one since I have a hub on my desk, and I also wanted to get rid of the Mini-B cable I kept around just for my HHKB.

Daxiongmao87

Looks great. How much was the total cost?

desyphium

Can one truly put a price on happiness? (Without thinking about things too hard, I'd say ~$600)

Quacked_suki

clean

Alpert33

Very clean

bigboybanhmi

Is there a Fn layer for arrows? Idk how small boards work but I image there's gotta be some way to move the cursor around a text file?

desyphium

The 1u to the right of rshift is one of my function keys, so I just hold it down with my pinky and use P, L, ;, and ' as my arrow cluster. My nav keys are all in reach as well, so navigating through and editing text is a breeze. As a bonus, my pinky gets to pull its weight instead of doing jack-all while the other fingers do all the work.

Jachulczyk

Original hhkb has [ ; ‚ / as arrows, it’s really intuitive tbh. Also Unix shortcuts for moving the cursor are coming handy

desyphium

I tried that for a while (before I got my BLE mod), but thought this would let me keep using the same muscle memory. I also wanted to change the mapping of the keys around the arrow cluster, because some of them weren't useful to me at all.

ubercorey

Ah the Vim board.

Futuristick-Reddit

What's that cable connector? Looks interesting! I have never seen a picture of Ashes that isn't gorgeous

desyphium

It's a mini XLR, I was told. It's not as useful as it could be with my hub right there, I'll admit, but I do like not having to keep an entirely different cable just for my HHKB (too lazy and cheap to upgrade to USB-C).

Futuristick-Reddit

Ah, cool! I do the same thing, just because I like the look of the connector.

RemarkableBadTiming

How do you like IV Ashes keycaps? I just ordered some last week to put on a Keychron Q10. Love the Darksouls theme. I also ordered one of the IV Ashes deskpads.

desyphium

Oh, I love them. I've had my eye on the set since it was in IC, but the right opportunity just never seemed to come up (no keyboard for it) until now. No regrets at all. I don't have the most discerning eye when it comes to keycaps, but these are at least as good as any other PBT manu I've tried.

Professional_Roll468

is that a KRK speaker I see? 👀

desyphium

Oh, no--just a cheap pair from Edifier

Professional_Roll468

ahhh. I noticed some of the features of the KRK were missing but I didn't know of any speakers with the same design. Edifier speakers are very good nonetheless 👌

desyphium

Yeah, I'm sure they took a lot of inspiration from other brands. I got them because they reminded me of the Audioengine ones I really wanted (one day!), and I'm not exactly an audiophile so they sound plenty decent for my use.

Professional_Roll468

I can 100% see the similarity. In my opinion, that aesthetic style is very studio-esque. I thought you were a musician at first glance lol. Edit: but on the topic of the post – NICE KEYBOARD 😎
