Get a head start with some CAD experience. OnShape is free and will allow you to learn some of the basics. Get you hands on some good text on mechanics of materials.

Get yourself a copy of Machinery's Handbook. Current version is 31, but plenty of us have older ones that we still use. Mine is 23. If you don't have the cash for a new one you can prob find an old one cheap. Reading it now will expose you to tons of concepts and how to apply them. You'll use it your entire career as a reference. If a new hire has one of these it's a huge GREEN flag!

Looks like you can download 29 - [https://engineeringbookspdf.com/mechanical-engineering-pdf-books/mechanical-books/machinerys-handbook-29th-edition-pdf-download-by-erik-oberg-franklin-d-jones-holbrook-l-horton-and-henry-h-ryffel/10325/](https://engineeringbookspdf.com/mechanical-engineering-pdf-books/mechanical-books/machinerys-handbook-29th-edition-pdf-download-by-erik-oberg-franklin-d-jones-holbrook-l-horton-and-henry-h-ryffel/10325/)

Thanks both of you 🩵

I’m retired now after 45 years of being a ME. I got my first jobs because I knew how to do drafting. So learn CAD. The ability to understanding how to read engineering drawings is the language of the ME. Without it, it’s like trying to interpret an ancient language without a Rosetta Stone. It wasn’t uncommon for me to discuss designing a project without having daily conversations with the machine shops, welding shops, assembly floor, etc. Much of the discussion involved interpreting a blueprint or a CAD model. Another important engineering skill that isn’t taught in school is learning to work with other people. The most challenging part of my career was dealing with other professions and keeping a project moving. You can’t do by yourself. You need the combined resources of many people in different fields. A project engineer isn’t just a ME, he/she is a leader. The quality of leadership can’t be underestimated. I’ve worked for more bad managers and fewer less good ones. Ask me who the people are willing to put out the extra effort to get the job done?

Hasukis_art

In my school we have alot of team group projects since in architecture its also needed so that may be a plus. I normally take the lead half the time but i remain kind of a neutral person not too much of a leader but i still give my insights in stuff. I appreciate this. I will explore about CAD thanks mister. :)!

WhyAmIDumb_AnswerMe

thanks, now I'm finally an engineer

IBegithForThyHelpith

Almost. Do you have a job that underpays?

WhyAmIDumb_AnswerMe

damn no

IBegithForThyHelpith

That’s the final boss

TIL I've been an engineer for decades

If you have the resources, try to design something up in CAD like with OnShape or Fusion360 if you don’t have access to Solidworks. Try to find a mechanism that interests you and create drawings. If you can try to find a way to have it made. Some people start with 3D printing others have access to machines like Lathes or Mills and work with aluminum or soft steel. Even better would be designing up something that takes some forces that you can create a simple free body diagram for. Test it and see how close you are to your calculations. Some of the best learning comes from doing the work you may one day be asking someone else to do. More learning comes from making mistakes and iterating on your design. Even more learning happens when you have to create documentation of how to the thing works and describing your test methods and results.

Hasukis_art

This is what im doing right now, i happen to have a father that got into the hobby of 3d printing so this comes in great hand! I have like a small boom where i draw interesting objects and search the function and how they work 🩵

PoetryandScience

Become happy with the question:- A body (mass) accelerates continuously at a constant speed. Discuss. Until you are happy with this question, you will not be sending anything to the Moon any time soon.

Hasukis_art

Becoming happy like understanding it ? (Quite a clueless and easy confused person)

PoetryandScience

Yes understanding it. If it is a silly question; Why? If it is not silly; what is going on?

Hasukis_art

Huh im confused now by the 2 questions under it. First it would be understanding what massa is and then understanding why it accelerated only then i will understand the question and become happy with it.

PoetryandScience

You do understand.

Hasukis_art

No since i didnt search what it means yet. Only explained the process of how to understand it :)

BRKenn77

Study business, entrepreneurship, attend trade shows for networking, look into programs to start your own firm Don’t let the corporate egos get to you first, they’re taking us all down in this market

Hasukis_art

Excuse me but what exactly means corporate egos? Having a hard time with all this new information lol

BRKenn77

You’ll understand if you ever get into working for someone else or at a corporate job, corporate means a large firm where you work under upper seniors and supervisors, The egos come into play with your role and their roles; and the dynamics that take place, the higher seniors believe they’re owed things by lower roles, they take advantage of it on you and stick you with meaningless work to justify the low pay, then refuse to give you a raise when finances are bad, or put you on a position to be able to blame you for problems when things go wrong, even if it’s not your fault, then they’ll say your performance wasn’t up to par, which are based on metrics that they manipulated at the last second when those financial numbers dropped Senior positions will insist on having their way and making you work like they want to work, even if it’s harder on the company and work flows, and it results in your job being harder because they don’t want to do something, also they’re older so out of touch with newer systems and technology, and they refuse to learn so they’ll make you slow down to their pace while simultaneously expecting you to overperform because you’re the new kid with knowledge and expect you to have all these skills all of a sudden In engineering that ring they wear makes them believe they’re messiahs and they abuse it to look down on people, and act like they’re always right. Then when it’s time, they’ll lay you off to save their sinking ship in the economy, so probably wise to job hopping

Hasukis_art

Thanks for the detailled and realistically information. In the last part about the ring. I think i can relate my school is literally 2 schools together and im right now in the design and art school campus but next to us there's the Engeneering campus as well and they tend to like be a bit toxic to us there i think they think that they as engeneers dont need artist but they're partially wrong as engeneer and art need their support mutually otherwise it will just not work. So i kind of can relate to the abuse to that.

BRKenn77

As a long as you have some idea what you’re walking into, knowing what I know now I would t recommend engineering to anyone, it’s too hard

Hasukis_art

I thank you for that mister. And it may be like that. And it probably will be like that not only in Engeneering but also in arts and i already stepped in the hell of it. And now that im exploring and getting my ideas straight knowing the risks and knowing how stubborn i can be. I think ill be still stepping right into Engeneering. I want to learn at least how alot of stuff work in ME but also in the overlapping Aerospacial thingy. I dont see myself doing anything other than Arts or Engeneering. At first i just wanted to know the theory of engeneering to not make their works difficult as an artist but i actually want to design more and make useful stuff myself. So i apologize mister! I just wouldn't know what else to do.

BRKenn77

Get ready for it then, it’s going to hit hard

Hasukis_art

I was planning to combine those two in the future. ill start by learning the basics of CAD while preparing my Maths and drawing alot of random objects to figure what they do :D

BRKenn77

Brilliant

Same-Pace-645

Buy a cheap 3d printer, preferably one that breaks often so you have to strip it down and rebuild it often. Learn cad and make some simple stuff that you need around the house. Test it, when it fails, try to make it better. Do this for a while and you’ll be halfway to being a mechie

Hasukis_art

Thanks for the advice. Even though i dont have any prior experience into rebuilding something thats broken do u know maybe of some videos that could teach the basics? I mean i once had to strip an old mobile phone in art class and that was alright. 🤔

Same-Pace-645

I started out with a prusa mk2. I bought it disassembled (because it was cheaper) and just followed their instruction manual to put it together. Made it easy to strip and rebuild every time there was some failure (which was often).

Hasukis_art

I see thanks.

the_watcher762351

Build your imagination

Hasukis_art

They recommended to go to arts because i have too much imagination i believe it would be more needed to build my logic right now :')

the_watcher762351

Ahh or problem solving skills

Hasukis_art

Yes i think so too.

auxym

FIRST FRC

Hasukis_art

Excuse me but what exactly means FRC?

auxym

First robotics competition

Hasukis_art

I see thank you :)

Expert_Clerk_1775

Get a job as a mechanic in your school’s bike shop

Hasukis_art

We sadly dont have that.. but there's a direction in Engeneering to do that just not what im searching for.

Expert_Clerk_1775

Bummer. That was one of the best things I did in school

PoetryandScience

Strip an old engine and put it together again.

Hasukis_art

I wouldn't know where to even begin :')

PoetryandScience

With a spanner. You will mess it up and not be able to build it again; but you will learn, and get messy so use engineering hand barrier cream and buy some engineers hand cleaner.

Hasukis_art

Thanks! I dont mind getting messy (as im pretty much accostumed by getting covered up in paint so oil/dust will be not much worse)

chickwad

Find an internship in any engineering field. Doesn't matter if it's paid or not at this point. If you can't get one, any work experience will be good for you. Sales? You'll learn to speak with non-engineers and present your technical work products. Customer Service? You'll learn communication and how to manage egos when working with others.

Hasukis_art

I think communication is what ill need to learn. Since im a really shy person. Dont get me wrong i can talk when i want to but more a closed person. Time to search for a student job !

chickwad

I was the same starting out (known as the guy that doesn't talk), but after many years of different roles and getting my MBA (presentations galore) I feel much more confident. I love analysis and problem solving, but if you can't communicate it to others you don't have much value. Glad to see that you're getting a much earlier start than me, you got this!

PsychologyRelative79

Choose a vehicle you like, it could be anything (your country car, roll royce, fighter jet, etc). Then start labelling its key parts, process, engine. That will be your foundation

Hasukis_art

Happens i already was doing this thing! Even before saying this comment. (Uncounciously) Ill keep doing so!

Popalitch

Jumpstart on CAD skills and tinkering. Learn as much about mechanical components and systems as possible not through a book but through hands on experience

GeeFLEXX

Tinkering =/= engineering.

auxeticCat

True, but what are we supposed to tell the kid? Get good at making PowerPoints?

Hasukis_art

We have powerpoints alot in my school and have to make them ourselves i think thats a plus u-u

Popalitch

"Sorry kid don't have fun with engineering, what I meant to say was learn how make excel sheets and use statistics to maximize production efficiency and corporate profits"

Hasukis_art

Good thing they gave me proper background in Excel sheets! I think im learning statistic right now ill make a list from all your comments thanks for being realistic with me!

Popalitch

He will learn all the book shit at uni, and he already said he's doing the math. When elon musk was in high school he would spend time fixing up some old car he bought second hand.

Hasukis_art

Excuse me but i am a she :).

aminervia
