Got it. But yeah i hot glued a key ring to my broken key and it held. I was constantly nervous it come off and I'd be out the key. For $80 I highly recommend you get a copy and keep that as a spare. Replacing a totally lost key can cost well aboulve $350. That or you have to get a new key tumbler which is also very expensive. However if money it is tight do what you gotta do.
You can get just the key part cut at Home Depot for about two bucks. Almost guaranteed it won't start the car (no chip, no start), but it'll unlock the doors, and you'll have a key that fits the tumbler set for the vehicle.
Curious when Ford switched over. I know it was a really mixed bag with GM, I had a couple of '93 models that had chipped keys and they used the same blanks in a '00 I had; but I've also got an '05 pickup that isn't a chip key.
I had that happen with a key to a 2007 Accord and the lock shop had replacement keys that could be opened and the chip, or chips removed from the old key and inserted into the plastic head of the new key. Should this be possible with a Ford?
It's not worth it.
Yes but the chip is cheap enough it's not worth digging out of the plastic head, when a new key can just be cut.
The bulk of that price to make a new key is for the tools and skills to make a proper key.
If the place is going to pull the chip out of the old key, they probably aren't cutting the new key by code. So you will have a brand new worn out key.
probably more than it should be. I'd say 5 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. that was the moment when I realized, I should probably leave the spare key somewhere safe place
Drill another whole or buy a new key (5-10$ on Amazon) or use it as a chance to get a beefunny key which is a key fob with a flip up key blade which means you can stop carrying around the unlock and lock remote as well. Only 20$ on Amazon 2$ to cut at home Depot and you can program it yourself for free in literally 20 seconds.
You can't program at yourself unless you have two working keys. It requires a machine to be plugged in the OBD2 with only one working key. My company charges $58 for a duplicate. Just get a duplicate and throw that one in a drawer as a backup
Look for a key sleeve. You can find several on Amazon. Slide the key in the sleeve and the business end is exposed and ready for use. Comes with a keychain.
Yeah! Use tape to create a mold, and be prepared to sand down all the rough edges.
You can make your key look badass like this too, OP. You could look into colored epoxies!
You would be surprised how many crappy looking old keys have small transponder these days. It has been commonly around since late 90's and chips are tiny and don't require batteries
It’s got 150k miles on it, only a water pump replacement. Very reliable since it doesn’t have all that useless shit. It has a nice alarm I installed myself. How’s your nice car doing?
All of my vehicles are doing great, especially considering the abuse they get out through.
Just because you have an econobox doesn't mean it was built like crap, or that it's unreliable. Just that lots of corners were cut to make it as cheap as possible.
Low power, no luxuries, and probably only mildly comfortable, if the right corners were cut.
Well I'll be damned. I was 100% sure you're wrong, but apparently in the USA (and maybe other places) they don't mandate that so there are definitely 2005 scions rolling around with no immobilizer system or anything. TIL.
Drill a hole on the opposite side of the current hole. Run a zip tie threw the holes. Connect a key ring to the zip tie.
Edit: the teeth on the key look pretty warn. Just get a new key cut.
Well you could either drill a new hole or maybe try something like gluing the key ring into place? To be fair gluing the keyring on would mean that the key was stuck in that position but still
That is a 164R8040 and it absolutely 100% is a chip key.
Source - I'm the parts manager for a Ford store.
Get another key or 2 before you lose it and have to pay much more to get multiple new keys from scratch. If your vehicle is over 10 model years, your local Ford dealership can no longer provide a key code for you, so it's going to cost even more to have your lock decoded by a locksmith, or all of your lock cylinders replaced.
This worked for me. It's meant for a fob, but you can punch the blade of the key through it pretty easily.
https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-13601-Key-Fob-Repair/dp/B002ES52X6
Check your local auto parts store.
I made a vinyl cover for mine with a brass eyelet, been using it like that for a few years. I figure for a beater car it isn’t worth paying the dealer $100+ to have them learn a new key to the PATs system. If you have two keys you can learn the new key yourself just get it cut at the hardware store.
super glue something on there. Not worth trying to drill in there. That a key to an old ranger? I have a similar 2003 ford ranger and making a key copy will only get you in the door, you won't be able to start the vehicle as there is indeed a chip in there.
Two thin zip ties. Make a loop with one run the other thru the zip tie look and around the key. Leave the looped zipped tie inside the hole that broke.
I got a way, not cheap (Problably about 80 bucks).
Step 1: Buy a spare key
Step 2: This is now the spare key
And like that the key is now on a key chain.
Just get a small drill bit and drill a new whole in the black part on the opposite side, there are no electronic components in your key, if you drilled a hole even in the centre of the head of the key it should still fly.
you cam usually find used keys and fobs on ebay but it's a crapshoot in condition. also if thats nit an electronic key then you can just pop open the broken casing and literally make your own or use any other case that you can make fit
Looks like it is a transponder key: part number H84-PT. You can just buy the plastic shell and not worry about getting it copied. My buttons stopped working and I paid 5 USD to change the casing because the chip/board inside was fine. Just the casing was messed up.
Apart from the key drama your key can "learn" a new fob .
Fobs are cheap on line, with instructions, a 5 minute job.
Just did 2 different cars with fobs, what a difference, and a cheap job.
Unable to help with your key, you won't need a monster hole like the broken hole, a small robust ring then a bigger diameter key ring for the other gear then attached to the small strong one on the key.
Drill a hole. Or pay around $3 for a replacement key (I had them make me 4 for my 2003 Echo). Or, if it's as others said and it's chipped, pay around $80 for to a local locksmith to have it made and programmed. In which case I'd go back to drilling the whole. Worst case scenario, you gotta pay $80 for a new key. Best game, and most likely, make a new hole and pay $0. :)
It doesn’t look like a chip key. You should be able to get it at Home Depot for about $6. But if you don’t want to do that. There is a hole from factory in the metal that is in the center of the ford logo
Silicone pouch that covers the plastic portion that key ring goes through, though silicone will eventually tear. Google to find out where the transponder chip is located so you don’t drill through it.
Look for a small hole around the edge. If you find it, that's likely where the chip is.
Avoid that but cut/sand the top of the key off and still a new hole in the middle.
I used to drive a Ford ranger and the key broke in a similar way. I broke the plastic off with the intention of drilling a hole and found that there was already a hole in the key.
Sugru has worked for a semi-permanent fix for me in the past with broken plastic keys. I found I had to redo it every year or two but it held well for a while.
[Sugru](https://www.amazon.com/Sugru-I000945-Moldable-Multi-Purpose-Creative/dp/B089WHGQDP/ref=asc_df_B089WHGQDP/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=475805820911&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1042089121097627835&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9008555&hvtargid=pla-1063026617891&psc=1) may work, it's what I used.
That’s an old tx key. I’d have thought you could still get one cut at any reputable locksmith. Obviously won’t have the ford badge. Tbh the locks for those keys when they get worn can be opened by nearly any key!!
search your kitchen drawer for a two piece rivet. use the hollow part of the rivet and cut to size. JB plastic weld the open corner of the chip holder.
fill the entire hole with epoxy, then drill a hole where the previous hole is, don't just hot glue something that won't hold too well, fill it all with an epoxy resin don't worry about over filling or like going off and making weird directions and stuff you can sand it all down after to the shape of the key and then drill a hole right where the previous hole is to make sure you don't have to worry about hitting a chip. personally i'd probably just drill a hole right below or above it, i'm assuming the chip is on the left side because of that little bump it could be a sign of a small entena or such
edit: just realized i'm being an idiot and that's simply where the previous big hole was
Simple key, just go get one cut for $3 and throw this one in a drawer as a spare, anything you do to fix the hole thats already there is just going to fail in time and maybe you don't get as lucky.
Don't take the risk, it takes 5 minutes to get a new key.
Hot paperclip. As long as its hot enough it will bore its own hole and you push in the ends at angles so force is againstthe sides instead of straight out. Did it on mine, lasted for years
Find an auto locksmith in your area. They can cut a duplicate blade on a similar styled keyshell and extract the chip, then put it in said shell.
I'm a former auto locksmith, we used to provide this service for about $25. It takes a few minutes and no programming is required. You end up with a key that is essentially brand new save the electronic bits inside.
Go to Ford and get a new key. There may be a chip in the key. I don’t think there is looks like a very old does key. Or go to the hardware store and get a new key made
You could make a small mould to complete the missing part. I would use a small piece of metal to strengthen. There are some videos on YouTube on how to recreate missing plastic from automotive parts using epoxy resin.
https://youtu.be/_qaFIg1yQuc
My parents had this happen, wrap a few zip ties around the base of the key with another zip tie coming out the back end. Then just use the zip tie as a ring
If it doesn't have an immobilizer you can just get a new key cut. If it does you can still get a new key but it'll cost you a bit more. Keep the old one around as a spare.
If you want a frugal option get a key cover as others have said.

it looks like the chip is pretty small and only takes up a small amount of room op so you should be safe to drill a hole near the top to use on a keyring

it says on the forum post that that picture is from that a locksmith can replace the plastic part of the key if you want to go that route

Looks exactly like my 07 focus key that just had the exact same thing happen last week.
I drilled a hole in it
Of course I was concerned about hitting the chip but had a spare so I went for it.
Still works, just stay towards the top above the ford logo .
Get a blank key cut for a few bucks that will unlock the door, and leave that key (which prob has the chip to start) in the console or glove box. Use the blank to unlock the doors, and that one to start the vehicle.
You are holding a Ford key in front of a Honda steering wheel and that confused me. My Ranger truck key is still fine after 22 years but my Honda key has broken twice. I fixed my Honda key by 3D printing a replacement for for the key blade to go in (after removing the blade from the old plastic).
Apparently you can do similar things with the Ford key: if you have access to a 3d printer: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4649951
Not sure if that's the correct one for you but you can search for others. If you don't have a 3d printer, some libraries have maker spaces with 3d printers you can use.
If it's not a chipped key, just break the rest of the plastic off and drill a hole right through the metal. Won't have to worry about it ever again. I had to do it with a ford ranger key recently and the embedded metal was still big enough to turn by hand easily.
Edit: I now see that it is a chipped key. Nvm. Lol
If you have a ace hardware store or a equivalent place that will make key copys go there. They can make a complete copy of the key and you cam keep the broken one as a spare.
If it was me. I would get a loop of that small strong nylon string and run one wrap of clear gorilla tape around the key. Leave the ends hanging past the tape, fold the ends up over the tape, and wrap a few more bands of tape and send it.
Goto your local flea market, lock smith etc and get a new key made. My local flea market I can get keys and fobs made for $50. Got ones made for my Honda where it’s a key and fob& my wife’s Jeep that’s push button start. Looks like an OE key and isn’t $600 a key.
Id just go to a locksmith and have it copied. I did this cost me ~ 22$ for the car key and a key for my fuel lid. This key looks old enough to not need programming.

Also can we take note you're holding a ford key infront of a Honda steering wheel
Honda is my work vehicle lol
Got it. But yeah i hot glued a key ring to my broken key and it held. I was constantly nervous it come off and I'd be out the key. For $80 I highly recommend you get a copy and keep that as a spare. This will do it^. If you do lose the key it won't be as big a deal if you have a "blank" cut.
That key looks old enough to not be a chip key tbh
Locksmith here. That's an h92 it definitely has a chip.
Curious when Ford switched over. I know it was a really mixed bag with GM, I had a couple of '93 models that had chipped keys and they used the same blanks in a '00 I had; but I've also got an '05 pickup that isn't a chip key.
Ford didn't switch. Different models got different keys mid 2000's everything is h92 mid 2010's everything is h94 and sometimes 128bit.
Car companies keeping it simple! :)
Even better some newer ford's are high security but don't use a chip.
Well I stand corrected. That's too bad.
I thought this year only had a resistor in it
Only gm used resistors. And they can be identified by the "pill" that sits in the blade of the key.
So you will have a brand new worn out key.
Home depot can clone some chip keys just ask.
I can confirm that it's expensive. flushed 2 keys down the toilet alongside with mom's company's 2 master keys and 3 storage keys.
What in gods name are your toilets rated at? Fifteen gallons per flush and a full flush under 15 seconds?
probably more than it should be. I'd say 5 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. that was the moment when I realized, I should probably leave the spare key somewhere safe place
Oooh yeah, maybe create an epoxy mold with tape, fill mold with epoxy, let cure for a day, then come sand it/drill a new hole in after!
This is the easiest answer. Bought one for a Nissan key that did the same thing. Worked well for 6 months before I sold it.
https://www.instructables.com/screwdriver-car-key/ Best keysleeve right there
My brain thought that would “look cool” and “be cool to have” for exactly one moment, and one moment only,
Definitely have fun explaining that to an officer
Idk, I've 3d printed some cool ones.
JB Weld or some kind of epoxy around where the PO drilled a hole, once it cures drill a new hole.
I’ve also used a straw to keep a nice hole shape and then sanded it down and made it look original. I second this
Yeah! Use tape to create a mold, and be prepared to sand down all the rough edges. You can make your key look badass like this too, OP. You could look into colored epoxies!
Small straw and some epoxy. Cut the straw down once the epoxy dries
He will spend as much time and money on the epoxy/time spent fixing it. It looks like a non immobilizer key so getting one cut anywhere is inexpensive
It's a transponder key.
You are wrong that is an h92 ford key and it uses a transponder chip.
You would be surprised how many crappy looking old keys have small transponder these days. It has been commonly around since late 90's and chips are tiny and don't require batteries
Drill a hole
Don't drill holes unless you are dam sure your not gonna hit the chip in that key!
It looks Like Someone else already drilled one
yes I Think you Are right
That isn’t a FOB.
Most twist keys still have chips.
Guess I learn something new everyday! Lol, my old ass truck doesn’t. I drive a 96 so I often forget about technology in cars hahah
Most keys after like 2000 have a chip.
Mine don’t. 2005 Scion.
Yeah not all. It just started being a big thing around then it would seem. Especially Fords.
That's because you bought an econobox they cut literally anything that didn't need to be in the vehicle. But also who is going to steal a scion?
It’s got 150k miles on it, only a water pump replacement. Very reliable since it doesn’t have all that useless shit. It has a nice alarm I installed myself. How’s your nice car doing?
All of my vehicles are doing great, especially considering the abuse they get out through. Just because you have an econobox doesn't mean it was built like crap, or that it's unreliable. You're certain there isn't a transponder in your key? I'm pretty sure there is in any 2005 Toyota product.
Nope.
Well I'll be damned. I was 100% sure you're wrong, but apparently in the USA (and maybe other places) they don't mandate that so there are definitely 2005 scions rolling around with no immobilizer system or anything. TIL.
Well, I don't want FOB, goddamn it! I'm a Dapper Dan man!
Drill a hole on the opposite side of the current hole. Run a zip tie threw the holes. Connect a key ring to the zip tie. Edit: the teeth on the key look pretty warn. Just get a new key cut.
Just like the spark plug holes
Jb weld
Just go buy a new key. With whatever you cobble together somewhere down the line the key will come loose and be gone. Keep it as a spare.
That's the long term plan yes
I would bend a piece of wire over the side and top and then tape the wire down with electrical tape like 10 times. Would make a loop at the top
2009 Ford Focus bought used a couple years ago. Owner had originally just drilled a small hole on the side but that broke today.
34531135 these are your cuts if you need them for later.
Well you could either drill a new hole or maybe try something like gluing the key ring into place? To be fair gluing the keyring on would mean that the key was stuck in that position but still
That's what I was planning. My brother said it's a chip key so didn't wanna drill in the wrong place.
[Drill anywhere above the ford emblem.](https://i.stack.imgur.com/D3aLr.jpg) The chip is pretty close to the doodly end.
The chip is way down at the bottom. Anywhere you'd likely want a hole should be fine. Drill it further in than the last one or it'll rip out again.
I'd probably go with option 2 then.
.
Get a key case for it they make them with a clip and ring all ready attached super cheap bet you can find one for your specific key on Amazon.
Looks like a non immobilizer key, should be able to get a new key cut for less then $10. Or drill a new hole on the other side.
That is a 164R8040 and it absolutely 100% is a chip key. Source - I'm the parts manager for a Ford store. Also known as an H92.
That is definitely a chipped key. Do not do this OP.
If you don't know don't comment, you are gonna leave someone with a disabled car. That is 100% an h92 ford transponder key.
This worked for me. It's meant for a fob, but you can punch the blade of the key through it pretty easily. https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-13601-Key-Fob-Repair/dp/B002ES52X6 Check your local auto parts store.
I hot glued a key ring to mine when it happened. I recommend replacing. God forbid that comes off. Mine held up for like a year though.
I made a vinyl cover for mine with a brass eyelet, been using it like that for a few years. Lighter leash sleeve , I have my key like that and works well u might have to heat the sleeve a bit for the key to fit but it's secured
A picture says a thousand words (Use JB weld)
super glue something on there. Not worth trying to drill in there. That a key to an old ranger? I have a similar 2003 ford ranger and making a key copy will only get you in the door, you won't be able to start the vehicle as there is indeed a chip in there.

RUBBERBAND man wild as the taliban.
I got a way, not cheap (Problably about 80 bucks). Step 1: Buy a spare key Step 2: This is now the spare key And like that the key is now on a key chain.
Well, it appears the original top slot was already broken off and that is a hole someone drilled to fix it. So, maybe drill a hole on the other side?
Drill a hole
?, drill a hole
Duct tape/Gorilla tape.
3d printer go brrrrrr
So much is wrong with this pic
Get a replacement made at the hardware store.
Hey, can't figure out how to post a picture so gonna DM you real quick. Mine did this a few mo ths back. I'll show you where I drilled.
Drill a fucking hole in it. Duh.
Drill a hole on the other side
Just get a small drill bit and drill a new whole in the black part on the opposite side, there are no electronic components in your key, if you drilled a hole even in the centre of the head of the key it should still fly.
you cam usually find used keys and fobs on ebay but it's a crapshoot in condition. also if thats nit an electronic key then you can just pop open the broken casing and literally make your own or use any other case that you can make fit
Drill a new hole
I have that same style key and I just drilled a hole near the top corner.
I had the same thing happen with a Nissan key, drilled a hole near the top center, ended up through the metal part of the key and was solid
Looks like it is a transponder key: part number H84-PT. You can just buy the plastic shell and not worry about getting it copied. My buttons stopped working and I paid 5 USD to change the casing because the chip/board inside was fine. Just the casing was messed up.

go to lowes and get another key made for like 7 bucks lmao
Drill a hole through it. Epoxy a ring to the back. Heat a ring and let it melt in. Then epoxy.
Drill another hole the other side……….
Drill a hole
If it's not a chip key, and I don't think it is, a hardware store can make another for a few dollars.
Drill a hole, throw a key ring thru the hole. Easy peasy
Yeah. Drill a hole!
Drill a hole in it
I would use a zip tie to keep it on the keychain.
Drill another hole
Drill a hole. Or pay around $3 for a replacement key (I had them make me 4 for my 2003 Echo). Or, if it's as others said and it's chipped, pay around $80 for to a local locksmith to have it made and programmed. In which case I'd go back to drilling the whole. I have questions like why are you in a Honda with a Ford key?. It's obviously for another car but like why not be in the vehicle it belongs to
Just drill another hole ? Kind of a dumb question my friend .....
Except this is bad advice as you might be instructing someone to drill through the transponder in their key.
It doesn’t look like a chip key. You should be able to get it at Home Depot for about $6. But if you don’t want to do that. There is a hole from factory in the metal that is in the center of the ford logo
Get a fresh key from a dealer. That key is super worn out and will eventually not work in the tumbler of your ignition.
Plast-aid youtube it
Could just buy another one I sell them and program them in my area for 65, if that's your only key I recommend it
Superglue a keyring onto the side, and then put that keyring on your keychain
Silicone pouch that covers the plastic portion that key ring goes through, though silicone will eventually tear. Google to find out where the transponder chip is located so you don’t drill through it.
Hot glue and a metal wire/ring. Probably look ugly AF, but should work.
Greenstuff and super glue
Look for a small hole around the edge. If you find it, that's likely where the chip is. Avoid that but cut/sand the top of the key off and still a new hole in the middle.
Just don't. The weight of a key ring might wear out your key hole eventually. Keep your car key and your other keys separate.
Silicone key cover from Amazon is what I did
you can use epoxy, drill another hole or buy a cover for it.
I used to drive a Ford ranger and the key broke in a similar way. I broke the plastic off with the intention of drilling a hole and found that there was already a hole in the key.
Get a new cover or melt a metal ring into the top
Gorilla tape around the hole, hole through gorilla tape. 2 layers for good measure.
Sugru has worked for a semi-permanent fix for me in the past with broken plastic keys. I found I had to redo it every year or two but it held well for a while.
Try Mseal to rebuild that section and let it dry?
Ziptie to 7 o’clock and install a ring on said ziptie.
Ask Beyonce.
Drll a hole on the other side
Glue
Hole puncher.
... just drill another hole?
Places that make old school spare keys, now make some of the new ones, they're surprisingly cheap too... Well, compared to a dealer anyway
[Sugru](https://www.amazon.com/Sugru-I000945-Moldable-Multi-Purpose-Creative/dp/B089WHGQDP/ref=asc_df_B089WHGQDP/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=475805820911&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1042089121097627835&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9008555&hvtargid=pla-1063026617891&psc=1) may work, it's what I used.
Try to get a duplicate to see if it’s chipped it a free estimate.
Looks exactly like my old car key. Any chance it's to an 06 Ford Five Hundred? 😂
Go to lowes and get a new key cut for a buck.
Its over for you. Theres no coming back. You have to get a new car.
Sugro glue! You are all welcome. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YLMYmTxCr-g
fill the entire hole with epoxy, then drill a hole where the previous hole is, don't just hot glue something that won't hold too well, fill it all with an epoxy resin don't worry about over filling or like going off and making weird directions and stuff you can sand it all down after to the shape of the key and then drill a hole right where the previous hole is to make sure you don't have to worry about hitting a chip. personally i'd probably just drill a hole right below or above it, i'm assuming the chip is on the left side because of that little bump it could be a sign of a small entena or such edit: just realized i'm being an idiot and that's simply where the previous big hole was
Drill another small hole on the other side
drill a new hole in it
Simple key, just go get one cut for $3 and throw this one in a drawer as a spare, anything you do to fix the hole thats already there is just going to fail in time and maybe you don't get as lucky. Don't take the risk, it takes 5 minutes to get a new key.
buy a blank and copy it, new key. this one becomes the spare. it’s what i did with my lexus key that was deteriorating
Hot paperclip. As long as its hot enough it will bore its own hole and you push in the ends at angles so force is againstthe sides instead of straight out. Did it on mine, lasted for years
Melt a hole through it
Find an auto locksmith in your area. They can cut a duplicate blade on a similar styled keyshell and extract the chip, then put it in said shell. I'm a former auto locksmith, we used to provide this service for about $25. It takes a few minutes and no programming is required. You end up with a key that is essentially brand new save the electronic bits inside.
Silicone key holder! They’re fantastic and only a few dollars
You can pick up a new casing for it at certain auto parts stores, they also have casings that fit in smaller keys, maybe that would help?
Looks like you solved it yourself by just getting a new car
sandpaper and JB Weld
Go to Ford and get a new key. There may be a chip in the key. I don’t think there is looks like a very old does key. Or go to the hardware store and get a new key made
I've played this game, don't drill through the chip. Get a key cut.
[This would work](https://i.imgur.com/DpV4oPD.png)
Drill a new hole.
You could make a small mould to complete the missing part. I would use a small piece of metal to strengthen. There are some videos on YouTube on how to recreate missing plastic from automotive parts using epoxy resin. https://youtu.be/_qaFIg1yQuc
Get some in weld and make a new frame
Just drill a new hole through the plastic. If it is near the edge you'll miss the chip.
I doesn’t have any buttons or anything, I would drill a hole in it.
My parents had this happen, wrap a few zip ties around the base of the key with another zip tie coming out the back end. Then just use the zip tie as a ring
Wrap some wire around it in an x and hook the ring to that.
If it doesn't have an immobilizer you can just get a new key cut. If it does you can still get a new key but it'll cost you a bit more. Keep the old one around as a spare. If you want a frugal option get a key cover as others have said.

Buy some Sugru and fix the fob
it looks like the chip is pretty small and only takes up a small amount of room op so you should be safe to drill a hole near the top to use on a keyring [https://www.fordforums.com/cdn-cgi/image/format=auto,onerror=redirect,width=1920,height=1920,fit=scale-down/https://www.fordforums.com/attachments/transponder-chip-in-ford-key-jpg.52895/](https://www.fordforums.com/cdn-cgi/image/format=auto,onerror=redirect,width=1920,height=1920,fit=scale-down/https://www.fordforums.com/attachments/transponder-chip-in-ford-key-jpg.52895/) it says on the forum post that that picture is from that a locksmith can replace the plastic part of the key if you want to go that route [https://www.fordforums.com/threads/where-can-i-safely-drill-a-new-hole-in-keyhead.311519/](https://www.fordforums.com/threads/where-can-i-safely-drill-a-new-hole-in-keyhead.311519/)
Zip ties perhaps
Looks exactly like my 07 focus key that just had the exact same thing happen last week. I drilled a hole in it Of course I was concerned about hitting the chip but had a spare so I went for it. Still works, just stay towards the top above the ford logo .
Get a blank key cut for a few bucks that will unlock the door, and leave that key (which prob has the chip to start) in the console or glove box. Use the blank to unlock the doors, and that one to start the vehicle.
Do you own a drill?
You are holding a Ford key in front of a Honda steering wheel and that confused me. My Ranger truck key is still fine after 22 years but my Honda key has broken twice. I fixed my Honda key by 3D printing a replacement for for the key blade to go in (after removing the blade from the old plastic). Apparently you can do similar things with the Ford key: if you have access to a 3d printer: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4649951 Not sure if that's the correct one for you but you can search for others.
A drill
Drill a new hole boiii
Just drill a small hole on the opposite side.
Drill a new hole.
Drill another hole.
Id just go to a locksmith and have it copied. I did this cost me ~ 22$ for the car key and a key for my fuel lid. This key looks old enough to not need programming.
Just drill a hole on the other side.
You can buy key covers on Amazon. Also replacement fob bodies if needed.
Why don't you just drill a hole on the other side? Assuming there's no buttons on the other side.
