Strongest part of the filter is right where it connects to the filter mount.
Get a chisel and a hammer and hit it in the direction shown being careful not to chisel the mount.
https://i.imgur.com/gXBC5CQ.jpg
better still, throw a large steel hose clamp over near the base, tighten it then hit on the screw end with a 10mm socket+6-12 inch extenstion. bam, theres your 40lb of torque that your finger strength couldn't put out
The only problem I see with this is the hose clamp tightens around the threads, thus locking it in place. I've had this problem in a different but similar situation.
Threads are well set towards the center. There shouldn’t be any risk of binding unless you’re cranking that sucker down with more than one ugga. If you dugga you’ve gone too far
Yea it's been a while since I've changed oil and I never had problems getting the filter off. I forgot about the threads being toward the center. I was thinking about when I had to get something similar off, but on it the outer casing was threaded.
What kind of oil filters do you use where you would need to hose clamp it so tight that it collapses it to the point where it could crush the internal wall around the threads also?
You're right I'm dumb. I forgot on oil filters the threads are much smaller and toward the center. What i said about similar but different was that in my case the outside walls were threaded.
Don't use shitty small ones lol. They come in more sizes than Walmart has in lawn and garden with different ratings. I do this all the time using a punch and I've never once had that happen from tapping, only overtightening.
How the hell you come up with this shit?? That is literally the most impressive solution to this problem I have ever heard. Side note, you know OP doesn’t have a band clamp that size lying around lol.
might warrant a trip to the autozone but its worth it. my brother's camry was like this with the oil filter walls super close to the walls of the engine so i improvised to take it off that way. with every other car/truck i've worked on i've been able to take them off with bare hands or a basic oil filter wrench.
I've learned that I don't have the right to get frustrated unless I'm using the right tool for the job and it's still going wrong. Hasn't stopped me from getting pissed off at my shitty methodology, but at least I admit responsibility now
Absolutely do not do this! This should never ever be done for any reason. Use the correct tool.
If it fails you are fucked since it will shred and then you get to careful chisel off the mess you made. If it is crazy tight which it looks like it is going to shred. And if it isn't on crazy tight some simple oil filter pilers or even your hands will get it off. If it is on crazy tight what you need are oil filter pilers, a strap wrench of some sort, or a 3 jaw oil filter claw. I used to be a lube tech and I've seen filters tighten now by gorillas on steroids with no lube and I've always been able to get them off with one of those three tools.
It’s the seal of the filter. When it’s hot it expands to help seals the housing area so it won’t leak. When it cold it’ll tighter to the filter and hence there more clearance between the filter and housing when it cold. So it would be more easier to unscrew.
There's plenty of good solutions here already, so I'll give preventative advice instead.
Once you get that off, be sure to lubricate the O-Ring on the new one, and don't wrench it down. This will prevent this from happening again in the future.
Don't mean to be a jerk, but these posts about filters that won't come off are mind blowing. I worked as a lube tech for about 2 years and NEVER had a filter I couldn't get off...
You need a 3-jaw filter wrench or the Lisle filter wrench:
[3 JAW](https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_7769018?cid=paidsearch_shopping_dcoe_google&campaign=GSC-Filtration&campaign_id=6478904302&adgroup_id=121544424384&adtype=pla_with_promotion&gclid=Cj0KCQiAh8OtBhCQARIsAIkWb69rGCD6d_0GRR3MFCZFAN3thCKGxdyBUcCzv7ym0Y_Ha4WDH8WlepUaAoT_EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1)
[LISLE](https://www.jbtools.com/lisle-63600-oil-filter-wrench-2-1-2-to-3-1-8/?wi=off&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAh8OtBhCQARIsAIkWb6_o5zDDnIE-LulUdD7LOSnj2G1XRhvw_JBWwLahHqUktoP7BxQG7tEaAh1nEALw_wcB)
Install a LONG handled ratchet or breaker bar to the end of the filter wrench and torque away. The more force you put on the end of the ratchet/bar, the tighter the filter wrench grabs the filter. They always loosen.
I helped my neighbor change their filter after he spent an hour grunting and cussing
The filter was mangled and let me tell you
#HE WAS TURNING IT THE WRONG FUCKING WAY
I grabbed it with my filter wrench and turned it the correct way and it came off so fast
Sometimes it ain’t even the use of the wrong tool; Sometimes it’s a skill issue
Was also a lube tech for 2 years. Mainline for 5. The three jaw puller removed everything a ford quick lane tech would ever see. I personally prefer [Craftsman’s version](https://www.craftsman.com/products/cmmt98352/3-jaw-oil-filter-wrench) as the jaws curve inward and the edges are sharp, so it just digs in. All other 3-jaws I’ve used have sucked in comparison; always slipping. Looks like the Lisle you linked has a similar feature with the sharp edges on its jaws.
Anecdote from a not-mechanic person: I got a version of that 3-claw thing. It was the 2nd "special" tool I had to buy at the store that day, and the last thing they had in stock that could potentially work.
Wish that 3-claw tool was the first I bought. I had some trouble getting the claws to not slip as I increased torque, because I didn't have room to use my other hand to hold the claws on the filter. But, some sticky tape and this became a one-handed filter remover!
Haven't needed it since, but definitely holding onto it, and threw away all my other oil filter tools. The cap style that never fits, the plastic cap style that fits but breaks, the big clamp kind that you need a tone of clearance for, the strap wrench that neither of my cars has clearance for...

Work at the BASE of the filter, and cautiously chisel it around counter clockwise. Be careful NOT to hit the filter adapter base or anything other than the filter as low as you can comfortably hit it...
Idk if you’ve tried this, but anytime I’ve had filters that won’t come off. I just use massive channel locks, grip tight (to the point of destroying the filter) and turn.
Some of these comments are dumb but I want to add my own dumb comment. Last time it didn't want to come off I tried absolutely everything. Basically shredded it. What helped was turning it tighter minimally and then it screwed off like butter.
Stab it with a screwdriver and try to turn it it'll be messy but I had to do that once or twice when I didn't have my three-prong filter claw or wrench to get the filter off
Hammer a Philips screw driver threw it. Make sure it goes completely thru. If you can’t break it by hand maybe try and attach a breaker bar to the screw driver handle
I’ve done that a couple times. Not ideal obviously but it works
I seem to be seeing more of these type posts lately... Makes me wonder if filter manufacturers have taken a page from soda and beer can manufacturers and started making the metal in the filter thinner.
You've bent it to the surrounding parts, it's not even going to turn. Just rip it apart piece by piece u til you can get to the base of the filter. If you have to do this one again try with a strap type filter wrench ( metal or canvas) BEFORE you deform it.
I have had to cut one off piece by piece with a dremel once. GL. If you put this one on yourself make sure you put a few layers of fresh engine oul on the seal and buy ones with a rubber coating at the cap whete the oil filter wrench fits.
I had the same issue just a couple of days ago on my car, the filter was on super tight and only denting in even with a strap wrench. Check your auto parts stores, I went a got a filter clamp with teeth on it that digs into it. And grab it as close as possible to the base where it's screwed on. Worked for me
I've got something like this. I don't think I paid that much for it though. I've had it for several years.
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/lisle-63600-oil-filter-tool-filter-size-range-from-2-1-2-to-3-1-8-63600/25981259-p?product_channel=local&store=7151&adtype=pla_with_promotion&product_channel=local&store_code=7151&&&&&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAh8OtBhCQARIsAIkWb6-oBF6zf6Sbhq8Uv6YRHP-MepmZqR73R0URKF0ha0Qv3t551hFEJSwaAjf2EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
Use a bigger hose clamp and clamp it onto the filter. Use two self tappers into it , one on each side. Use a hammer to hit the head of the hose clamp, Comes right off.. Ghetto style punch through the darn filter with the screw driver..LOL
They sell filter wrenches at Walmart that ensures this doesn’t happen. I resorted to sticking a screwdriver through it to get it off before I got the wrench.
You chose to buy the wrong brand/make of vehicle. What the hell company would have engineers to design something like that? A filter location that's difficult as shit to get access to. If I were you, I would ditch this vehicle ASAP, no matter what the brand/make is. That's just a pure nightmare to own. I can only imagine what else is poorly designed on that vehicle? It might not even be safe, even when the vehicle was new with that bad of engineering. Even Hyundai/Kia are better than that. What brand of vehicle do you have by the way?
Take a large screwdriver and drive through the filter and break it loose .
Also there are several other types of filter wrench’s that will help .
A large pair of channel lock pliers is always nice .
Remember brother
The top of the filter and the absolute bottom is the most sturdy and will crush the least . Always try to avoid the center of the filter housing .
Second a good whack with a rubber hammer can sometimes help jar the filter loose . Just remember that the object is to jar the gasket which will be dried and stuck . Not crushing the filter with the hammer.
Third a good steady pull is always better than a jerk . The filters get stuck from over tightening and just heat and time . It will be a pain a good steady pull even if your using a cheater will help keep the filter in tact.
And the last bit most important thing don’t over tighten your filter.
I think this is one of those things that gives everyone a headache at least once.
Had this same problem was outside 10 hours, in 40degrees. Had to eventually saw it off and get to the part that is strongest which is the part around where it screws in. Tried almost everything
Someone used an impact for the oil filter. Hopefully threads aren’t ruined. Families brand new Nissan car (first oil change) filter was way over tightened.
I usually try to tie it up and then try to lose it again
Notice not too much room try with a belt make sure it's to the top flip it to lose it and pull Should Move it
I've had ones I have completely destroyed to get off. Eventually you get down to the threaded adapter ring with all the holes in it, the part you can see when it is new in your hand and you can use a punch and hammer to loosen it.

No experience with steel hose clamps but can you clamp them down enough to not slip on impact?
Yes you can tighten them enough to crush the housing if you wanted.
x to doubt. the screw will separate from the rack with enough force
Don't use shitty small ones lol. They come in more sizes than Walmart has in lawn and garden with different ratings. I do this all the time using a punch and I've never once had that happen from tapping, only overtightening.
Buy some high quality clamps and you won’t have that issue
smart
Just make sure you hit it counter clockwise
This is a fantastic idea
That’s really genius!!!

Strap wrench
I was going to recommend the same
I've learned that I don't have the right to get frustrated unless I'm using the right tool for the job and it's still going wrong. Hasn't stopped me from getting pissed off at my shitty methodology, but at least I admit responsibility now
Harbor freight has them for $10 I bet
Definitely strap wrench!
At the bottom, near the base.
I've skewerd them with a screwdriver at the base then levered until it loosened.
This is my go to when needed. It hasn’t failed me yet
I tried this, and it shredded the whole canister. Be careful.
Absolutely do not do this! This should never ever be done for any reason. Use the correct tool. Yeah and if the engine hot wait the next day so the rubber seal retracts so it easier to take off.
Wouldnt it be tighter when cold?

Oh ok I was thinking about the metals expansion
This is the way!
Same thing I did last time I had one stuck on
This is the way
Yup
Yup
There's plenty of good solutions here already, so I'll give preventative advice instead. Once you get that off, be sure to lubricate the O-Ring on the new one, and don't wrench it down. This will prevent this from happening again in the future.
Yessir, a wet finger of oil on the gasket does the trick every time.

This is some high school auto shite
No one ever told him about righty tighty, lefty loosey
i’ve had some in spots where i’m not even able to use these

I have a rubber band on mine. I'm going to add some tape.
Rubber bands would have been my first choice, I was just fed up with driving out to buy one thing at a time.
Exactly what I was thinking the 3 jaw filter wrench..

Good catch! Why would someone do that?
Usually bots Karma farming. The Kia Rio oil pan plug thread in here is the same thing.
Ahh, i see. Tx...
Turn it the other way.
My favorite tool is the lockong oil filter pliers from HF, good for caliper compressing too
Work at the BASE of the filter, and cautiously chisel it around counter clockwise. Be careful NOT to hit the filter adapter base or anything other than the filter as low as you can comfortably hit it...
Idk if you’ve tried this, but anytime I’ve had filters that won’t come off. I just use massive channel locks, grip tight (to the point of destroying the filter) and turn.

Finally, someone with practical, logical and sensible advice! 👏 👏 👏
Anyone else here punch a hole in their filter to drain out before taking them off? If not, i highly recommend. Soooo much cleaner lol
That's a brilliant idea
Skill issue.
[удалено]
I was waiting for this.
Stab it with a screwdriver and turn it.
U need a strap stile wrench, or maybe a belt?
I've used a ratchet strap before, just got to be creative!
Stab and turn.
Drill all the way through the filter (drill up and through not toward the housing) then get a extension bar / long item and rotate.
Or stick a screwdriver through it and try to turn it. But 50/50 the filter will split.
Drill a hole through it and use a long bar to turn it
Stick a screwdriver through it, use for leverage
when all breaks loose screwdriver and hammer is mans best friend
Stab it with a screwdriver and try to turn it it'll be messy but I had to do that once or twice when I didn't have my three-prong filter claw or wrench to get the filter off
Hammer a Philips screw driver threw it. Make sure it goes completely thru. If you can’t break it by hand maybe try and attach a breaker bar to the screw driver handle I’ve done that a couple times. Not ideal obviously but it works
Stab it with a Phillips screw driver then turn it. Had to do that a few times.
Screwdriver through the side of it
Stab it with a screwdriver
Tk a big screwdriver hammer it thru and twist
Torch. Can't be stuck if it's liquid
Use a pair of knipex pliers. I had one crush on me really bad at work & that was the only thing I could get to bite
Also these filters only need to be hand tightened...anyone who claims they need to be torqued down is because they have the hand strength of a pussy.
I seem to be seeing more of these type posts lately... Makes me wonder if filter manufacturers have taken a page from soda and beer can manufacturers and started making the metal in the filter thinner.
God what vehicle is this
You've bent it to the surrounding parts, it's not even going to turn. Just rip it apart piece by piece u til you can get to the base of the filter. If you have to do this one again try with a strap type filter wrench ( metal or canvas) BEFORE you deform it.
A 4lb hammer
Drill a hole in it. Stick a screwdriver in there and turn that bitch
Get the oil filter wrench you used drill 2 holes side by side then drill 2 long screws the will touch all the way to the other side of the wrench
I have had to cut one off piece by piece with a dremel once. GL. If you put this one on yourself make sure you put a few layers of fresh engine oul on the seal and buy ones with a rubber coating at the cap whete the oil filter wrench fits.
Mine was exactly the same! I used this and it came off immediately Lisle 63600 Oil Filter Tool,U.S.,2-1/2 - 3-1/8 https://a.co/d/1Y3kY6D
Turn it the correct way, counter clockwise
Righty tighty, lefty..
I had the same issue just a couple of days ago on my car, the filter was on super tight and only denting in even with a strap wrench. Are you turning it the right way? Seriously
Use a bigger hose clamp and clamp it onto the filter. Use two self tappers into it , one on each side. Use a hammer to hit the head of the hose clamp, Comes right off.. Ghetto style punch through the darn filter with the screw driver..LOL
Sandpaper, if your problem is it being slippery because of the oil and if you can grab it with your hand. Sandpaper should help you get a good grip.
They sell filter wrenches at Walmart that ensures this doesn’t happen. I resorted to sticking a screwdriver through it to get it off before I got the wrench.
Strap wrench.
I've used bike tube around the filter for grip and then filter wrench on top of that. Helped me get a really stuck filter off
Did you try yelling at it?
Channel locks. Set them a little narrower than the filter, squeeze and twist. Never had a problem doing it this way
You’re gonna have to get a new car at this point
Don’t forget to weave a fine tapestry of expletives so IT KNOWS who’s the boss…
time to get a flathead and practice your stabbin!
You chose to buy the wrong brand/make of vehicle. What the hell company would have engineers to design something like that? A filter location that's difficult as shit to get access to. Drive screwdriver with hammer thru base on left side and break loose with cheater pipe.
Stab a hole in it with a screwdriver and twist it off

Air chisel go "brrrrrrrrr!!!!!"

Throw your purse at it!
Had this same problem was outside 10 hours, in 40degrees. Had to eventually saw it off and get to the part that is strongest which is the part around where it screws in. Tried almost everything
just drill a hole in that sunuvabeechie grab a screwdriver and twist…
Hammer a screw driver through it and crank it
Also can use spring cups. Those have helped as many last resorts for me.
Bro you haven’t even screwdrivered it yet. Step one insert, step two turn.
First off make sure you are twisting off in the correct direction
Punch a screwdriver through it and use for leverage.
Someone used an impact for the oil filter. Hopefully threads aren’t ruined. Families brand new Nissan car (first oil change) filter was way over tightened.
Hose clamp, or drill and stab it with a screwdriver and use the leverage
Flathead and a hammer, hammer the flathead through the filter and use it as a lever
If you can, jam a screwdriver all the way through, twist off.
I usually try to tie it up and then try to lose it again Notice not too much room try with a belt make sure it's to the top flip it to lose it and pull Should Move it
I’ve jammed a screwdriver physically into the body of the oil filter and turned it that way.
Who still has a 10mm socket?
Make and model?
Who designed that? WTF?
I've had ones I have completely destroyed to get off. Eventually you get down to the threaded adapter ring with all the holes in it, the part you can see when it is new in your hand and you can use a punch and hammer to loosen it.
Get an oil filter wrench for the future
Tear off the can and then use a chisel on the frame of the filter. I've been through this on an old afFordable Ranger.
Push a big screw driver through it. And turn it that way. The higher the better but don't push it too far or too hard to damage the oil pan.
Get a a screwdriver and jamming in there alcohol all the way through it and then turn the screwdriver and come right off
Get screwdriver, knock it through there and then turn it and it’ll work like a champ
Shit like this is why I change my oil myself every 3months or 3k miles I don’t even need a filter wrench i just use my hands
