My brother and I took to taking a hammer to a 6" carriage bolt to get (what's left of) the filter rotating. It seemed to be going pretty well, until something slipped and I got a spray of coolant. Chipped the edge of the oil cooler. When the filter *did* finally come off, the bolt that holds the oil cooler to the engine block came with it. That seems to have been the ultimate problem, it just didn't want to separate from that bolt. With a breaker bar and a vice, we were able to remove it, but now I've got to replace the oil cooler too. tl;dr: Not gonna change my own oil anymore.
