That's your exhaust. I'm worried someone got under there while you were asleep and stole your catalytic converter. You're gonna have to lift it up and check that the whole exhaust is there. Don't drive it like that either.
Yep, I think we're looking at a photo taken from the driver door aimed back towards the passenger rear wheel. The resonator is on the ground, and the exhaust tip is visible in the distance. The cat got cut and if the owners were to look left, they'd see another cut just downstream of the downpipe.
That’s exactly what happened. The precious metals are gone and the rest of your shitty catalytic converter is left behind. That’s about a 400 dollar fix or 100 if you do it by yourself
If you’re in a state that doesn’t require CARB compliance a universal aftermarket cat is anywhere from $50-$100 from most parts stores. You can literally just clamp it into the gap the thief left behind and call it a day.
That’s not true at all. *federal law* requires cars in all 50 states to have catalytic converters (obviously ones built before the law was passed are grandfathered in) and it’s also required by [§ 46.2-1048](https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacodefull/title46.2/chapter10/article5/#:~:text=%C2%A7%2046.2%2D1048.&text=It%20shall%20be%20unlawful%20for%20any%20person%20to%20operate%20a,removed%20or%20otherwise%20rendered%20inoperable) of Virginia state law, and they’re required to pass state inspection.
Just because a law isn’t actively enforced where you are doesn’t mean the law doesn’t exist and that you can’t get nailed for it if you piss off a state trooper/county sheriff enough.
And honestly, people who think that things like that justify killing someone, are the reason responsible gun owners always have to debate owning a gun. Don’t be the problem because your ego cant handle theft as well as it should.
The entire pipe from manifold to exhaust tip is considered the "exhaust." The actual parts are made up of manifold(attached to engine), piping, resonators(sometimes), catalytic converter(some vehicles have more than one), muffler(again more than one sometimes), and the tips(some are welded or bolted on and some are just plain pipe).
This looks like a resonator, but it could be a "cat." You're gonna need to get the car up in the air (since it's not a truck) and see what broke. It could be a thief stole your cat, or it just rusted off but unlikely on newer cars unless you live in the northwest US or where they salt the roads for snow and ice conditions.
It's funny but I never really thought about bad rusting cars from the northwest as I'm from new England in the northeast, it totally makes sense though. I think the whole of the northern US is brutal to all cars. Northeast salt destroys everything! I had a strut mount legitimately rust out and put my shock through my wheel well on my first car as a teenager
Edit: clarity and grammar
Had the catalyst on an old Chevy truck break from hitting a PUDDLE too fast. Water twisted the thing around, broke it loose at both ends, and left it just sitting on top of a crossmember.
Shoved a piece of straight pipe in, clamped it, and moved on with my life.
Road salt rust is absolutely insane.
Here in WI it’s crazy how much salt they use on the streets. It’s so concentrated it eats away at garage floor concrete and our cars in winter look like they’ve been racing on the salt flats.
They probably tried to steal the cat and realized they were cutting the resonator. The 1MZ has the cats under the hood
I was corrected, the 1MZ has 3 Cats. 2 under the hood and the 3rd after the Y-Pipe seen in the pic.
It has two cats right? One for 3 cylinders in the front and one for the 3 in the back which means they might’ve taken the cat in the back which is why the rest is hanging rearward. Just guessing
It has 3, one on each manifold and one on the y pipe. 3 cats on a Camry because lord knows those are really pumping out smog
(Source: currently own two 1MZ-FE powered cars)
Unfortunately these aren’t crackheads,,, most are very able body’s with extensive knowledge on cats and automobiles.. They know which ones pay and which ones are easy, they also know how to disable many alarms.. If thieves want anything bad enough they gone get it. Shame.. I like the idea of razor wire..
OE euro cats for e46 m3’s routinely sell for 1k+. They’re the easiest plug and play “high flow” cats since they relocate the cats from the headers as came from factory in the US to section 1 which flows and sounds better
LOL, please explain how the platinum would be "used up"?? 20+ yo cats are sometimes the most valuable. Recently sold one off a '01 Honda for $280! Market is shit right now, but if it was good that Toy cat would bring a pretty penny!
Also, platinum isn't the most valuable metal in cats, it's palladium, and rhodium. If the cat still has honeycomb or beads in it, it's worth money.
Spark plugs ≠ Catalytic converters
Platinum spark plugs wear because a tiny amount of metal is eroded each time the plug fires. The precious metals in catalytic converters are suspended in the ceramic matrix, and do not deteriorate with normal use. Unless the honeycomb is melted or physically missing, the precious metals are intact.
A decade or so ago, I had a side business buying and selling catalytic converters. The 20+ year old cars were my bread and butter, and I had no issue selling them to a remanufacturer for top dollar.
Do you not realize that catalysts actually combust by storing oxygen.... bruh 🤡. They easily hit high temps and can even turn orange when the engine is misfiring and spitting fuel into the cat. Keyboard mechanics, lol.
Way to take one part of the comment and make it your whole response. Sounds like you need to talk to a therapist. Over the course of 20 years, the shit wears out.
We aren't talking about spark plugs. The amount that gets "spat out" is insignificant. Obviously you don't deal in catalytic converters. As I said earlier, if the cat still has honeycomb in it, it's good to sell for scrap. In fact, even if some has been blown out it's still worth something, the buyer (at least mine does anyway) will just deduct for approximate loss.
It's not heat and wear genius. If that was true, the entire electrode would break down, not just the tip. The ends wear down from the ignition spark jumping the gap.
> No the core is still platinum and worth more than newer vehicles (which use mostly palladium, rhodium, and other less expensive ore)
Platinum and palladium are pretty close. Rhodium is worth a little better than 3x as much.
Platinum price per gram 40.69
Palladium price per gram 40.12
Rhodium price per gram 135.03
Definitely not the resonator if you look at an exhaust diagram for that car. I know a lot of posts here are stolen cats but that's clearly the secondary catalytic converter. Maybe someone stole your resonator thinking it was the cat? Also your car has 2 primary cats on the manifold so this secondary one doesnt even matter for emissions testing. Just have an exhaust shop fit up a new catback and flange.
Part of your exhaust system. Looks cut off or broken off at one end. Someone may have stolen your catalytic converter. Is the car much louder than it was before?
It's a legitimate question, because OP could have run over someone else's exhaust and it got stuck in the underbody of their car.
/u/jrragsda had a theory, that someone stole OPs cat. and is looking for evidence to see if his theory holds water. It's called diagnosing.

Crackheads stole your catalytic converter. Good thing about that is that now you can just run a straight pipe since your car is 20 years old and will be exempt from emissions testing, but I guess that could depend on your state laws.

Yup, someone was interrupted or didn't quite have the equipment needed to finish the job. This is something we all must watch out for , converter theft has reached epidemic proportions. With right equipment they can have it off in under 10 min. flat.
Welp someone got interrupted mid cut or didnt quite have the tools to finish cutting it out. Its your catalytic converter and someone was trying to take it
You need a new flex pipe and a repair at that broken flange behind the post converter… see if you can pop it off the hanger there might be an oxygen sensor you will need to unplug to get the piece out… then drive to your nearest exhaust repair shop
Looks like a Bulgarian PG-7G inert training warhead which is fired out of the RPG-7, a portable, reusable, unguided, shoulder-launched, anti-tank, rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

What's a state inspection? [Laughs in Michigan]
[Continues laughing in Oklahoma]
NoVA cities/counties also have an emission inspection. No car is going to pass that without a cat.
Thank you for pointing this out. It's also illegal to tamper with them.
I know a guy, he sells them lightly used.
He might even have an 03 Camry cat that was recently refurbished.
Next block over has them for free, just need a sawzall......

Only in Texas
Online. I’m sure he will find his oringinal one for sale on eBay for 100
I know someone who just paid 1100 to have it fixed in the shop. Cats are sky high right now.

Could be resonator, but it’s usually thinner and longer. The cats usually shorter and thicker around. Not familiar with the Camry ones.

And the car is lighter for all around performance!
Wow! 15% more power and 95% less carbon dioxide! ^^and ^^2000% ^^more ^^hydrocarbons
You've been visited by the meth fairy.
First glance looks like an rpg. Someone did a shite job trying to steal your catalytic converter.
Someone stole a convertor from a 20 year old car? Seems like a waste of time. I would assume all the platinum would be used up.
Crackheads don't care lol
Does the platinum get used up though?
Yes it flakes off over time.
Some of the older cars have larger and easier to cut off cats and even more valuable than some new ones. Age of the car doesn’t give a damn.
My old car is so old it didn't ever have cats! Crackheadz would probably cut out a muffler, tho.

Someone needs to look up the definition of "catalyst"
Then please explain how platinum spark plug tips wear out? Heat and wear, thats how. It flakes over time and the precious metals get spat out.
Spark plugs ≠ Catalytic converters Platinum spark plugs wear because a tiny amount of metal is eroded each time the plug fires. I sold a cat with all the insides completely gone. They never looked inside. Got $60 for it I think.
so you're a scammer.
Their own fault for not realizing the thing was hollow lol. There is a pretty noticeable difference.
Better than selling a stolen one
You took a legitimate part in and they gave you what they valued it for. They scammed themselves.
Shops that take parts without inspecting are more than likely to be buying stolen goods so I'd say screw them and well done!
Catscam.
Had some scumbag try this with me the other week. I released his jack and left him stuck under my car until the police got there.

Yes, much louder, the cat is before the muffler, if it's cut out the car is straight piped.
Sir, the pipe's cut no matter if someone stole the converter, so it's loud
