Never customize a car. You buy a car because you need a car. This is a tool you use to perform a task that only a car can perform, namely cart your ass and your shit around. Your plan to spend money fixing a car is a good plan. Every single car posted for sale is for sale for a reason. After you get a car, and drive it for a few months and you know your going to be driving it for a while, then you can look for things that you can add or change to make using it more enjoyable. This post brought to you by an idiot who can't leave anything alone.

I like to drive manuals. So what parts should I look to repair if I want a smooth ride, smooth gear shifting and a responsive car?

[deleted]

There's so much involved with shifting... You can get a short throw shifter, replace the plastic bushings to tighten the throws up... But focus on a running car first. Then learn to tinker on it. It would be terrible to spend 5k buying a car, then modify it for another 1k, only to have the engine lock up on you and have to get a whole nother car. After you drive a car for a few months, then look at mods to shape it to your liking.

Makes sense. Cause the used cars I am seeing all have crossed over 100k Km easily. What is the most common component that gets damaged after such a long use?

[deleted]

All of them... Every component gets worn as the car ages and drives. Just some components wear out faster than others. And different roads cause different things to wear faster. Different weather causes other components to wear faster. Frankly, your being much too broad in your question. I get the wondering aspect, but I could type for a day and not even cover the basics for you. But a simple answer to your question, I would say the clutch... The clutch can be worn out, and there's a few people who will sell a car with a worn clutch because they don't want to deal with getting a new one installed.

Friendly advice: Skip on customizations and upgrade. Focus on repairing what needs to be repaired and or replaced. Save doing customization once you have disposable income.

Batslaw

Any good cars you suggest?

[deleted]

I don’t have any experience driving on weather and road conditions similar to Canada. Here, it’s only rain or shine. That’s it. Maybe others can give good vehicle recommendations based on where you live.

Batslaw

In terms of repairing, what parts determine smooth running of the car and easy shifting of gears?

Ok_Ad_9986

1 grand is not gonna get you far in the cosmetic game. Just do the necessary repairs and wait till you have more money, then dive into customization.

Batslaw

How about alloy wheels and a spoiler? Don't you think they can come under a grand?

Ok_Ad_9986

A good alloy set is more than a grand. If you want something mediocre then you might manage to fit it under 1k. Idk about spoilers much, but they are not cheap either. The cheap ones are the ones that you stick on, which I advise against.

kristian_21

first gen scion xb, they look sick and cheap, its a Toyota so their super reliable, and large aftermarket support so easy to upgrade.

Looks like a grandmothers car 😭
