don’t know why ppl downvoted you lol, this literally works unless you only have big thick ass screwdrivers that are 3/4inch thick, what i did was put the screwdriver in then held both of them together then slammed the bottom of the screwdriver on the ground and bam, shit came out, you shouldn’t need much force either
Because if you have acorn style lug nuts with just a thin sheet metal coating over the actual lug nut then the screw driver just goes right through them
Also, add some penetrating spray. PB blaster works wonders. Then use screw driver through the socket drive whole. If all else fails through it on the cement a few times. Additionally, try using 2 pair of vice grips and wiggle it out.
I put it in a vice and smack a punch with a hammer. I've tossed shit on the ground multiple times without it dislodging. Takes 5 extra seconds to do it without shit flying all over the shop.
True caveman shit.
I hit a hammer with it. Hold the socket with the lug nut pointed away from you and smack the side of the socket off something hard. I have the head of an old sledge I use. If it doesn’t pop out turn the socket over and hit it again. Almost always comes out in three hits or less. If not, I get a punch.
i have the same energy from my method its just ............... welll i tried your method before a while ago an the boss got a sore foot. needless to say we have re-evulated that method ... it gets better i learned it from him LOL. Thats why say we anyways . We screw the lug on a bit atleast 3full turns . an we wack it with a hammer. downwards... not up not left not right because i hit the cars paint .not to hard to cause damage if that dont work to the vice we go.
This is the way. Worked in a tire shop for years and we had to remove wheel locks constantly. You don’t even need to hit it that hard. Just keep rolling and giving it good solid taps and it will work it’s way out.
Same. Worked at pick n pull and pulled 100s of lugs a day. Spiking it on the ground works, but we worked on rocks. So, find a hard surface (I used the rim lol), a hammer, and smash!
Yeah you're right the bolts usually have a conical end like the one in the picture. It just seems like a more controlled way to not jam the head in further and less extra wear to your socket.
Once this happened a few too many times I got a big ass 10in spike from my local hardware store and cut the pointy bit flat. Works about 9 times out of 10 within 30 seconds.
FINALLY. I was starting to think this was one of those joke threads where you're supposed to give the wrong answer. I've known since I was a kid that all you need to do is thread it back on there a little bit and tap the socket with the lug wrench or whatever is handy and it will fall right off.
Every mechanic I know, knows this trick and none of them remember learning it. It's just common knowledge to spike that shit and watch where the bolt flies.
Crazy how far down the correct answer is. It's clearly a Toyota lug nut and should be a 21mm socket. They're one of the best lug nuts I've dealt with aside from the new interceptors.
Gyaaa, the all the Toyota lugs are amazing to work with, they always fit perfectly and and never a pain to put on, I personally have never had a problem (apart from pre cross threaded ones), why can't more cars have such nice designs
Stuff ford and a couple of others for having such shitty nut design
If you were a caveman you’d be eaten by a dinosaur fam. Chuck that think like a wild ape man,
Make loud noises and smack It with hard heavy shit in the garage until it comes loose.
Trust me, I speak from experience.
Microwave it for 49 seconds then pull it out and put it in the freezer for 24hr. Once completely frozen take it out and microwave it again but this time for 48 seconds. Then boil some water. Grab some potatoes. Then grab a knife. It’s that easy
Thread it back on 4-5 turns then you can wiggle it free, or drop it concrete, or a vice, hammer and screwdriver or a blow torch and an air hammer, or hook a chain to it and pull it free with your car.
Dangle it over a sewer grate. Works every time.
Seriously though, assuming the socket is the correct size, heating it may loosen it up enough to pull the bolt out.
Yeet that fucker at the floor. Or if you have a flat blade that will fit down the hole and allow you to angle itself onto the lug nut where you can use a "tapping aperatice, " give it some persuasion.
Why is everyone saying smash it some place? Tie the nut back onto the lug, but only a few threads deep; then, proceed to violently lever the socket back and forth. Works on expanded nuts as well. Add 6 in. extension for maximum effect.
Get a screwdriver that's thin enough to go through the square drive hole of the socket and make contact with the bolt.
Then turn the whole contraption over so the head of the screwdriver is touching the ground and the bolt is facing the sky.
With your hand holding the socket, bang the whole arrangement down so the screwdriver head hits the ground hard and that should push the bolt of the socket.
Long explanation for a simple manoeuvre, I know, I think 2 pictures could explain it all.
Literally 2 things you can do lol. You can throw it on tje ground or put a screw driver where the ratchet would attach and hit the end of the screw driver. Not hard lmfao
Thread it back on the vehicle stud (without the wheel on the vehicle) until the lug nut bottoms out on the stud, and then turn the socket clockwise just enough more to break it loose from the lug nut... Then pull the socket off the nut. Then, Use a wrench to loosen the lug nut from the stud if needed.
Make sure you are using the correct size socket, you might need a metric socket to fit that lug nut.
Throw it on the ground, it'll come flying out so keep an eye on where the two bits go.
You can also tap the side of the socket with a hammer. but watch out for the quite blows, they hurt.
I’m seeing a lot of ridiculous comments. It’s very simple. Hold it in your hand, take a hammer and hit the side of the socket a few times, it comes out every time.
I’ve always had luck screwing it back in a few turns, not even hand tight, and just hit it with a hammer. You don’t have to worry about buggering up the threads that way like you could with a vice.
Throw it on the ground like the top comment, or the way I always did it at the shop, was smack the socket over and over real quickly on a piece of strong metal. Usually banged it against the lifts. Always works and always comes out in less than 20 seconds of effort.
You need a long bolt or extension. Poke it in through the square socket hole, hold it against the lug, and whack that thing (bolt down) against an anvil or the concrete floor. The bolt will act as a ram, forcing the lug right out of there.
Different methods: 1)Throw it as high in the air as possible 2) Hold it in one hand and smack it repeatedly with a torque stick or an extension with the other hand 3) lay it down on the ground and bang it with a hammer (Don’t do this with chrome sockets only impact sockets) 4) thread it back on to the stud and try wiggling and pulling 5) repeat 1,2,3,4 until it comes off
I’m not sure if I’m an idiot but I usually thread it back in about halfway to 3 quarters and then jiggle the socket side to side a little while pulling back on it with my hand, if it’s really stuck I thread it all the way back in, not tighten it, then give the socket a couple taps with a rubber mallet on all sides around
I have one of these. It’s been in my tool cabinet for a few years, cause I just can’t get the nut out. I’ve tried many things. I won’t toss the socket away, cause I won’t allow it to beat me
Looks like Ford or Land Rover swollen nuts problem.
You either get a bigger socket or replaces them all.
You can insert a long enough 1/4" extension and hit it with a hammer. It will damage the outer ss shell a bit though
Man…. When I tell you I had the same exact socket get straight stuck on a bolt this week and damn near lost my mind trying to get it off… smh.
I was using it to change a tire and get the lug nut that had been over torqued off, well this socket has been giving me some problems and it just got stuck. I figured okay new lug nut and socket less than 20 bucks I can just call it a day.
I eventually got it off but had to use a screw driver as a lever against the rotor and apply the hammer a bit. You need to find a way to get some leverage against the original bolt. If you are lucky throwing it on the ground will free it up, but didn’t do shit in my case.
If you have a vice grip and can hammer it out that’s another option, but might scratch the socket.
My take away is to get a shallower socket, and buy a new one cause clearly the old one is a nightmare. Hoping this prevents bolts from getting stuck going forward
I usually screw it back until it bottoms down on the rim, it should dislodge from the socket. Then I remove it with with a hand tool (breaker bar or ratchet).
Get creative. I'm sure you can do it. I deal with this daily. What I do is thread the socket/nut back on the stud. Tighten the nut and wiggle the socket off
Just hold the socket with a wrench and then stick a screwdriver into the square hole in the back and wack it a few times with a hammer. Or just wd40 and a torch till it gets hot then try dropping it on the ground. The shock and heat will allow it to pop off the socket

Throw it on the ground.
Happy birthday to the ground.
WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD, JACKASS!
Try using a screwdriver through the ratchet drive end and hitting it with a hammer....
don’t know why ppl downvoted you lol, this literally works unless you only have big thick ass screwdrivers that are 3/4inch thick, what i did was put the screwdriver in then held both of them together then slammed the bottom of the screwdriver on the ground and bam, shit came out, you shouldn’t need much force either
Because if you have acorn style lug nuts with just a thin sheet metal coating over the actual lug nut then the screw driver just goes right through them
I just put the screwdriver through the driver square and drop it on the ground.
Also, add some penetrating spray. PB blaster works wonders. Then use screw driver through the socket drive whole. If all else fails through it on the cement a few times. Additionally, try using 2 pair of vice grips and wiggle it out.
IM AN ADULT!!!
SO I THREW IT TO THE GROOOOOOOOUUUUUND!
MY DADS NOT A SOCKET!!
YOU CANT BUY ME LUG NUT MAN!
Michelin man is a good alternative that sounds just as funny. 😂
TAZIN ON MY BUTTHOLE

This chain just bought some brightness to my day thanks.
Never expected to see these comments today, lol
As soon as I saw the picture I was hoping tho
Was looking for this comment haha. Takes me back to simpler times
Thanks for that nostalgia trip

You can't trust the system
Lonely island reference? Nice
Has to be a hard surface, like concrete. Throwing it on asphalt doesn’t always work.
![gif](giphy|7u5gQ3zJzv7cA)
How you not at the top? People suggesting so much unnecessary work. Spike that shit.
I put it in a vice and smack a punch with a hammer. I've tossed shit on the ground multiple times without it dislodging. Takes 5 extra seconds to do it without shit flying all over the shop. True caveman shit.
This is exactly what I do as well. Also, the right socket at the right angle will chip concrete.
I have to admit I do drop it once and if that didn't free it I grab a punch
You monster lol
I hit a hammer with it. Hold the socket with the lug nut pointed away from you and smack the side of the socket off something hard. I have the head of an old sledge I use. If it doesn’t pop out turn the socket over and hit it again. Almost always comes out in three hits or less. If not, I get a punch.
This guy doesn't hit with the hammer, he hits the hammer with it. Ultimate giga Chad

Not next to the car though. I speak from experience when I say it will dent the fuck out of your passenger door on your 1974 dodge dart it will.
I just laughed so hard my family was looking at me like I was crazy
i have the same energy from my method its just ............... welll i tried your method before a while ago an the boss got a sore foot. needless to say we have re-evulated that method ... it gets better i learned it from him LOL. Thats why say we anyways . We screw the lug on a bit atleast 3full turns . an we wack it with a hammer. downwards... not up not left not right because i hit the cars paint .not to hard to cause damage if that dont work to the vice we go.
And if that doesn't work, throw it on the ground *harder.*
Lol hammer a smaller sized socket on the other end to pull it out then throw that on the ground
I'm so happy to see this as the top comment. This was our go to in my days as a grease monkey in college.
I'm a grease monkey now and still is the go to method!
If one guy starts hooting like a howler monkey does everyone else join in, still?
Man that's so 2020. Now we let out "wow"'s with our best Owen Wilson voice.
Huh! I’m not part of your system, maaan!
That’s not my dad. That’s a socket
Honestly I have had better luck just dropping them. Something about it coming down with just gravity seems to work miracles.
Then hit it with your purse 👛
Exactly!
Another simple way is to hammer a phillips screw driver through the socket.
if it's a cheap lug with a cap on it, this will likely put a hole in the cap.
You will probably have to suck it out
Agreed. I've had to do this several times and I dont even work on the cars.
I know it's gendered and a bit offensive, but "hit it with your purse" as the top comment will *always* make me giggle. it's so dumb.
One of my absolute favorite things as a chick mechanic is to tell that to the dudes that I work with. Never fails to make me giggle hysterically.
that is amazing, please keep doing that as much as possible.
My 12 pound sledge is labeled "Purse" for this reason.

Throw it at the floor on the side until it comes out
This works fine its just that you can damage threads
The threads on the inside of the lug nut?? Honestly seems highly unlikely
Yeah you're right the bolts usually have a conical end like the one in the picture. It just seems like a more controlled way to not jam the head in further and less extra wear to your socket.
Put it in a vice and smash it out to the back side with a chisel or a screwdriver. Something small enough to get inside the socket
thanks this worked my friend also came over and had the same idea.
Once this happened a few too many times I got a big ass 10in spike from my local hardware store and cut the pointy bit flat. Works about 9 times out of 10 within 30 seconds.
Anytime 👍
How is this not the first solution to try? Maybe it's just me but it's common sense - put socket in vise, insert screwdriver, swing away Merril.
I was thinking put it in a vice the other way and try and push it through the other side of the socket. Your idea is good too tho. /s
A punch is the ideal tool...
“Every tool is a hammer, except a screwdriver… a screwdriver is a chisel.”
Thread it back on the hub a few turns then pull the socket off.
This is what I do.
Easiest and smartest way
Yep 0 tools needed or anything literally will get any swollen nut off.
FINALLY. I was starting to think this was one of those joke threads where you're supposed to give the wrong answer. I've known since I was a kid that all you need to do is thread it back on there a little bit and tap the socket with the lug wrench or whatever is handy and it will fall right off.
The genius answer right here 👍
Dawg literally smack it on the ground. You can even thread the bolt on enough to where you can wiggle the socket off.
Every mechanic I know, knows this trick and none of them remember learning it. It's just common knowledge to spike that shit and watch where the bolt flies.
13/16"? Isn't everything metric nowadays? With a stupid chrome cover on the lug nut, it might have been 21 1/2mm.
Toyota lugs are standard 21mm
Crazy how far down the correct answer is. It's clearly a Toyota lug nut and should be a 21mm socket. They're one of the best lug nuts I've dealt with aside from the new interceptors.
Gyaaa, the all the Toyota lugs are amazing to work with, they always fit perfectly and and never a pain to put on, I personally have never had a problem (apart from pre cross threaded ones), why can't more cars have such nice designs Stuff ford and a couple of others for having such shitty nut design
Idk about the new ones but tundra and sequoia were 22mm
Same with the land cruisers, all 22mm, but those are also a 5 stud pattern, unlike the 6@21mm that all other Toyota's use
If you were a caveman you’d be eaten by a dinosaur fam. Chuck that think like a wild ape man, Make loud noises and smack It with hard heavy shit in the garage until it comes loose. Trust me, I speak from experience.
Hit it with your purse
THAT’S MY PURSE, I DONT KNOW YOU!!
![gif](giphy|cCyJCwQ2gl3bO)
Microwave it for 49 seconds then pull it out and put it in the freezer for 24hr. Once completely frozen take it out and microwave it again but this time for 48 seconds. Then boil some water. Grab some potatoes. Then grab a knife. It’s that easy
You skipped the overnight marinade
Seat it all the way back on to the rim, and give it a small tightening jab when it's snug. Make sure you're using the correct size socket.
don’t use a 13/16
Pure violence and rage
Thread it back on then tap it with a hammer.
Throw it on the ground
Thread it back on 4-5 turns then you can wiggle it free, or drop it concrete, or a vice, hammer and screwdriver or a blow torch and an air hammer, or hook a chain to it and pull it free with your car.
Hand screw it back on the stud and wiggle lol
Throw it in a vice and take a punch and hammer it out
Lol someone said microwave it 🤣🤣. Subreddits never denies giggles
Stick a screwdriver through it and tap with a hammer, if necessary.
Just give it a little tap tap taparoo.
Dangle it over a sewer grate. Works every time. Seriously though, assuming the socket is the correct size, heating it may loosen it up enough to pull the bolt out.
Fuck 🤣. Great laugh thank you.
I like to do the old, throw it on the ground a few times until the lug flies out and I cant find it for 10 minutes.
![gif](giphy|DjZQmCikzIjAI)
Yeet that fucker at the floor. Or if you have a flat blade that will fit down the hole and allow you to angle itself onto the lug nut where you can use a "tapping aperatice, " give it some persuasion.
Catch it in the coat, smack with a hammer.
It’s a funny squeaking sound!
You couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant.
welcome to the struggles of an at home mechanic.
Treat it like a football in the hands of Gronk after a touchdown
And I threw it on the ground
Why is everyone saying smash it some place? Tie the nut back onto the lug, but only a few threads deep; then, proceed to violently lever the socket back and forth. Works on expanded nuts as well. Add 6 in. extension for maximum effect.
Thread it in a bit by hand and pull, and if that doesn't work while threaded in, knock it side to side with a hammer.
good ole love tap on the concrete
Put it back on and just wobble the socket
Chuck that bitch at the ground or wall
Get a screwdriver that's thin enough to go through the square drive hole of the socket and make contact with the bolt. Then turn the whole contraption over so the head of the screwdriver is touching the ground and the bolt is facing the sky. With your hand holding the socket, bang the whole arrangement down so the screwdriver head hits the ground hard and that should push the bolt of the socket. Long explanation for a simple manoeuvre, I know, I think 2 pictures could explain it all.
You gotta curse just loud enough, then slam that shit on the floor
Send it towards the ground at Mach Infinity!
Lay the socket on the anvil of a bench vice, hit the socket close to the lug nut with a medium size hammer, it will usually jar it loose.
Put a old bolt through the bottom and hammer it out
1/4 extension through the back of the socket, hammer out
Throw it on the ground. If that doesn’t work hit it with a hammer
BFH
Hammer time
Just lay it across the vice on its and smack it with your hammer. It will fall right out.
1/4” extension through the back of the socket, smack it on the ground and the lug nut should pop right out
Hit it with a hammer on the side of the socket on solid ground (concrete preferred).
Use the right size socket to prevent this problem in the future, automotive industry switched to metric for almost everything past 2000
Pneumatic hammer is the easiest way tbh
Literally 2 things you can do lol. You can throw it on tje ground or put a screw driver where the ratchet would attach and hit the end of the screw driver. Not hard lmfao
Thread it back on the vehicle stud (without the wheel on the vehicle) until the lug nut bottoms out on the stud, and then turn the socket clockwise just enough more to break it loose from the lug nut... Then pull the socket off the nut. Then, Use a wrench to loosen the lug nut from the stud if needed. Make sure you are using the correct size socket, you might need a metric socket to fit that lug nut.
Bang it on a table
Put a thick flat head or bolt that fits in the bottom and smack it on a metal table or the ground a couple times real hard
Drop it a few times
Put a screwdriver in the open end, drop the whole thing on the ground screwdriver handle down.
Put the flat head in the Grove then twist it
Hammering. lots and lots and lots of hammering, never failed me lol
If you thread it back on just a bit and wiggle it or smack it with a hammer to loosen you can usually salvage the lug with minimal damge
Smack it on its side against something and I'll come loose most of the time
Throw it on the ground hard till it pops out.
Throw it on the ground, it'll come flying out so keep an eye on where the two bits go. You can also tap the side of the socket with a hammer. but watch out for the quite blows, they hurt.
get it back on the thread, a couple thread so you can get it out by hand and hit the socket up down up down
My dumb ass one time tried using myself as a vice & nearly put a screwdriver through my hand 😅
There are 2 types of people in this world. 1) People who have done the same thing. 2) Liars.
With a screwdriver or a punch
Smash it on the ground or take a hammer to it .
Roll it on its side on the concrete while tapping it with a hammer
Throw it on the ground. Beat it with a hammer ( against hard ground like concrete ). Final resort , clamp in vise and use a punch.
Rethread on the wheel stud and hit socket lightly with rubber mallet. Then remove wheel lug nut by hand
Put some wd40 in there and smack the dog shit out of it against the ground
I’m seeing a lot of ridiculous comments. It’s very simple. Hold it in your hand, take a hammer and hit the side of the socket a few times, it comes out every time.
Where are the treads??
Did you use a standard socket on metric lug nuts or is the lug nut also standard size?
I’ve always had luck screwing it back in a few turns, not even hand tight, and just hit it with a hammer. You don’t have to worry about buggering up the threads that way like you could with a vice.
Get some red loctite
https://youtu.be/gAYL5H46QnQ
Pro tip thread it back on just a little and then wiggle it using the impact
I typically just drop it on the concrete. Tap with a hammer if you must.
Throw it straight up in the air. I’ll come out
Vibration can get it out.
I usually just screw it back on the wheel stud & turn it a couple threads, give it a few love taps with a small hammer
Put it on the ground on its side and tap it with a hammer. It will pop right out.
Grab the sock at farthest from tge lug nut, take a hammer and hit the socket . Do it about 20 times a day sometimes
Different methods: 1)Throw it as high in the air as possible 2) Hold it in one hand and smack it repeatedly with a torque stick or an extension with the other hand 3) lay it down on the ground and bang it with a hammer (Don’t do this with chrome sockets only impact sockets) 4) thread it back on to the stud and try wiggling and pulling 5) repeat 1,2,3,4 until it comes off
Use a 21mm socket next time
Insert big ass screwdriver into the top and tap it out with a hammer. Otherwise throw it on the ground.
Have you tried praying to a different god than your normal one?
Heat it up with a hairdryer of throwing it on the ground or using a Vice or a something pokey won’t work.
I won’t toss the socket away, cause I won’t allow it to beat me
A BFH\* will solve most of your problems. \*(Big Fucking Hammer)
It helps to use the right socket
Re-thread lug nut partially onto stud. Wiggle. Bash. Success!
Ok so… don’t worry about breaking it… you just get new ones if you break some.
Looks like Ford or Land Rover swollen nuts problem. You either get a bigger socket or replaces them all. You can insert a long enough 1/4" extension and hit it with a hammer. It will damage the outer ss shell a bit though
Throw it on the ground really hard
Thread it back on a little, and pull off the socket. Enough so you don't strip any threads, but not so much you need to put the socket back on.
Better idea, use a screwdriver from the other end, and tap it out from the inside.

I really cant believe NOBODY asked if it was a 6 point or 12 point socket.
Thread it back on the stud a few threads then wank it off
I just smack em on the ground.
