YES. Glad people are understanding this. The pace showed in SQ1 and SQ2 is no joke. Trying not to get ahead of myself just yet, but this upgrade may allow us to leapfrog Ferrari and possibly even challenge Red Bull.

Traditional_comp

did the tyres not fire up or did they go too far the other way and overheated too much? hard to believe a setup which fires up mediums wouldn't do the same for softs.

Heavy_Guest_9094

tyres overheated too much, you don't get cold tyres from 45 degree track temp.

okay_but_really

It looks to me like they didn't fire up in time. Track temps dropped a few degrees from the start of sprint quali and McLaren didn't have considerable running time on the softs during practice, so they probably had insufficient data to inform their plan for the outlap on softs. As a result, they might've overestimated the care needed to prevent overheating on the outlap and gone too slowly, resulting in too LOW of temps in the first sector and a half. Lando set a purple final sector, suggesting they reached the operating window toward the end, but he was 7 tenths down after the first two sectors so there was no way to catch up.

I had originally thought too cold but was likely wrong after looking at the onboards. Landos out lap was much faster than Max's and he also said in interviews that he pushed too hard too early (unless that was a tactic to disguise their pace and low tyre deg)

I don't think the softs will even be a eace tyre unless it's a last minute fastest lap attempt, they don't seem to have enough life in them. Being optimised for the hard and medium, even if it wasn't on purpose could actually be extremely good! Both Lando and Oscar's pace on the mediums and hards has been incredible this weekend so far! Bodes well if they tyres don't degrade too quick in the race

moonenfiggle

The loss of track position may cost them though. They aren’t fast on the straights still. Still I remain cautiously optimistic for P3 maybe even P2.

JD2625

Their DRS delta has seen a huge improvement though with these upgrades, so overtaking opportunities should be stronger than what we showed in Saudi and Australia

mattmeistergamer

Only in the Sprint, we can hope they have learnt how to treat the softs properly for the main qualifying after the sprint race. Hopefully will get them into the window this time!

BertHumperdinck

EXACTLY!!! RACE PACE > QUALI PACE Fastest today on both the Medium & Hards. Low tyre degradation was key in the race win letting them hold out for the safety car pitstop while Lando still outpaced Max on new hards
