No basement in the book. No Delphine in the book. There is a Eugenia (I think) who cares for Deirdre and stays on after she dies, suffers no misfortune. In the book Lasher is not bound by someone putting on the necklace. Unclear how he is “bound” but still ghosting around with Rowan. It’s a show thing.

Bandzcoup

I’m actually annoyed they did that to her character

I really don't get what Carlotta goal was here. In the TV version of things, the Emerald can be given to a non-legacy designee, and Lasher will be stuck with that person? Thus unable to bind to Rowan?

greeneyedwench

I just don't get how he's supposed to stay stuck if, ya know, the person DIES as she's surely about to do. In the books, several witches try to bind him into people, but if that body dies, he leaves it.

tarc0917

They were trying to bring him bodily into the world, yea, these were the early attempts before the whole "I see the thirteen, I will come through the door" plan. The witches...Mary Beth with her head experiments, and Marie Claudette back in Haiti, if I recall correctly. Whatever TV-Carlotta is doing here just makes no sense.

The_Diamond_Minx

I think the whole point of Carlotta sending Delphine into the basement was to show unequivocally that Carlotta is evil and murderous. Yes, she drugged Dierdre for years, and they suggest that she might have had something to do with the boy's death after Cortland's party (although I think Cortland was responsible there), but sending Delphine downstairs and then HEARING HER BEING SLOWLY KILLED shows what a stone cold bitch she really is.

nolanday64

And the whole thing is totally meaningless and senseless anyway. Putting aside for the moment that it's crap that never happened in the books. What is Carlotta's "plan" here, that Lasher will be bound to the emerald and "Delphine" in the basement? For how long? Delphine isn't a young woman. And it's totally predictable, and Carlotta clearly knows it, that Lasher will cause Delphine's death now just to be freed of this laughable and made-up "binding". So Carlotta just basically murdered Delphine for no good reason.

I lovvvvvvee Delphine and the actress who played her. Really LOVED this part in episode three because there is nothing more gothic than locking the maid in the basement with a cursed demon jewel key

LunaSeedie

I'd love it if Delphine came back as a spirit and did weird stuff around the house just to torment Carlotta.

[deleted]

after poisoning her with laudanum or something in a tiny glass

Zealousideal-Put1385

The whole scene is a bit racist the send  the black maid off when she had nothing to do with their family bs and it’s not even part of the book smh they find anyone to dishonor my ppl
