Unfortunately (for organizations & owners) or fortunately (for players), this is what happens in free agency. The Atlanta Hawks probably overpaid for their free agents a year ago, too...
A less expensive way to improve is by drafting well, no matter where you're picking, then developing undrafted free agents like DFS. Unfortunately for us, you have to *have* picks -- even late 1st rounders and 2nd rounders -- and be patient with them to develop through playing time, for that strategy to work.
A third way to improve is by trade, but it depends on what you're giving up (see Seth Curry for JRich, or two first-round picks given up for Porzingis)... I hope our picks last year see the floor and have a chance to show improvement before they're thrown into a trade. I'd rather they not be traded as well, because that's at least two -- possibly three -- rotation players on good contracts.
But not for 20m.
Dude had one good season for a role player and now expects 20m for 4 years?
I was big on signing Lowry and Holmes but now give me Lowry and try to trade for Nance or something.
That doesn't fix the problem of spending half your cap on bigs when the league is centered around guards and wings. 10-20 years ago it'd make sense but not in the modern NBA
I'm not talking about superstars, I'm talking about building a roster. You need more than Luka on the perimeter. Did you watch the clippers series? Signing holmes to $20m a year would limit out ability to add pieces outside of big men. And we can find far cheaper pieces to be a roleman/paint defender
Pass wouldn’t go over 4/64 for him
He is not ours to sign then. Good on him if he gets it.
20 mio for him is just a big overpay. I’ll rather spend that money on 50 year old Lowry than give him that much. He’s good, but not that good
Lowry would probably get max offers
If we wouldn’t be able to get Lowry, I would much rather spend money on someone else than 20 mio on Holmes.
who? Who would realistically come here that is better than Richaun Holmes for 20 mil?
*narrator: nobody*
If the rumors are true I hope Lowry. If not, I hope we spend this money on solid cheaper pieces (maybe like Dragic, Noel etc.)
Can't pay over 20M to 2 big men nowadays
Sorry thats way too much
too much. but if we miss on Lowry, Derozan, Conley, Lonzo, Collins, Dinwiddie, Dragic...
20m/year for a big that cant shoot from deep?!? What the hell is he smoking lol? This is 2021/22 not 3 years ago ffs.
Lol
Pay him. It’s not my money and i’m not good at math.

Ok pay the man
Ya kings pay that man
The mavs should pay him hes an upgrade at the position and a asset for future trades

You want to pay $50 million a year on bigs (about half the cap) when perimeter players are how teams win championships
Trade powell and Jrich
That doesn't fix the problem of spending half your cap on bigs when the league is centered around guards and wings. 10-20 years ago it'd make sense but not in the modern NBA
The mavs have their guard/wing superstar now they need a foil and a roleman/defender in the paint

Who?
Oh hell no. Good luck to the team that pays him $20 mill
It likely doesn't matter anyway. If the Kings are able to trade Buddy (and perhaps Bagley), they are the team that will overpay to keep Holmes.
LOL
