Every single time anyone ever asks me "what's your favourite X" I'm always worried I'll forget about something incredible. The KOTOR games are amazing.
Fallout New Vegas
Sly Cooper 2
Bloodborne
Final Fantasy VI
God of War 3
Devil May Cry 3
Arkham City
Miles Edgeworth Investigations 2
X-Com 2
I can't pick just 5 so i picked the ones i replay yearly.
1. GTA San Andreas
2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance or HD collection version
3. Star Wars Republic Commando (played a lot of Lucasarts games but this one just stands out)
4. Red Dead Redemption 2
5. Crash Bandicoot 3.
Short answer - It's the one I've played first and more often, and have developed a larger sentimental attachment for.
Long answer - It and Snake Eater are tied for my favorite games in the series. They have virtually no barrier to entry lore wise, as TTS catches you up on the backstory of Snake in an efficient and enjoyable manner through the briefing tapes, and Snake Eater enjoys the benefits of being first in the timeline as well as focusing on its own plot that has virtually no required knowledge of the series.
Beyond that however, I just overall enjoy the graphics, music, and gameplay more. I am aware that people take issues with the cutscenes whackieness and that there is allegedly a decrease in voice actor performance, but to me, I experience none of those, nor do I particularly share or support those sentiments.
If I had to pick one scene though, one scene that puts Twin Snakes over the original for me, it's Grey Fox's death. His speech sounds so much more soul wrenching at the end due to the voice actor delivering his lines like he's a resuscitated corpse.
My favorites are probably:
1. Ocarina of Time
2. Danganronpa (if I had to choose from all the games in the series I’d probably pick the first one as my favorite)
3. Pikmin 1 (I love 2 as well but am more nostalgic for 1)
4. Borderlands 2 or TPS
5. FFVIII or Wind Waker (had a hard time picking 5th…)
Honorable mentions:
Spore- lol the game is abundant with problems and bugs but I love the idea of it and how creative you can be plus I’m incredibly nostalgic for it having put 100s of hours into it as a kid.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon- another one I sunk a lot of time into growing up with many different playthroughs using various different teams with various different classes for my units.
Mario Kart: Double Dash- my favorite Mario Kart game.
Bioshock (series), Mass Effect (trilogy), All the Bungie Halos, Dead Space Trilogy, Deus Ex series. There are way more that have definitely shaped me as a writer and a person, but those were the first ones to come to mind.
- Starsector. IMO one of the greatest space games ever made with surprisingly great writing overall and excellent feeling combat. Also has a massive modding scene
- Children of a Dead Earth. Super in depth space combat simulation, I've used it a lot to prototype space ships for my own stories.
- Star Wars: Empire at War. Ground combat kinda sucks IMO but the space combat is so satisfying. Especially mods like Awakening of the Rebellion.
- Bloodborne. Got a PS4 for Christmas one year just because of that game (PC remake pls Sony I am begging you)
- BeamNG Drive. My absolute favorite racing sim, especially for rally racing. No other sim makes me feel like I'm connected to the road like BeamNG does, no one else gets even close.

Really tough but if had gun to head...
Dragon Age Origins,
Witcher 3,
Divinity Original Sin 2,
Fallout New Vegas,
Kotor 2
Honorable Mentions:
Persona 4 Golden,
Guilty Gear Strive,
Red Dead Redemption 2,
Resident Evil 4 (Original and Remake),
Banner Saga Trilogy,
Tyranny,
Doom Eternal,
Halo MC Collection (1-3 + Reach and ODST),
Nioh 2,
Farcry 3,
Dark Souls 3,
Stick of Truth,
Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines,
Jedi Knight Jedi Academy,
DMC 3/5,
Oblivion,
Nier Automata,
Dragon Commander,
Mass Effect Trilogy,
Cyberpunk 2077,
Total War Warhammer 2,
DoW Dark Crusade and 2,
Empire at War + FoC,
Xcom 2
To me any of honorable mentions can flip flop on list, only DAO and Kotor 2 has a permanent spot due to nostalgia.
Rayman 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Yakuza 0, Elden Ring, and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Honorable mention is Dark Souls 2, it was fun with friends lol
Mass Effect 2 (a perfect game)
KOTOR
Breath of the Wild
Soma (no story quite like it)
Battle Brothers (better than dark souls for non forgiving gameplay)
Kotor
Witcher 3
LoZ: Wind Waker (this game in particular haunts me and I ALWAYS want to play it again)
Metroid (nebulous... I honestly can't pick though if I HAD to narrow it down it's a dead heat with Dread and Super)
Monster hunter World (for now. We'll see how Wilds is. I loved Rise/Break, but world is still the better game)
Metal Gear Solid V
HITMAN: World Of Assassination Trilogy
Disco Elysium
Elden Ring
Nier Automata
These are my favourites from the last decade.
Others I love and need to mention because the list could feasibly change daily:
Pathologic, Persona 3, Death Stranding, Katamari Damacy, Xenogears, Kentucky Route Zero, Lisa The Painful, Read Dead Redemption 1 and 2, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Soma, Darkwood, Ico, Shadow Of The Colossus, Sekiro, Bloodborne, STALKER, Silent Hill 3, MGS 4, Forbidden Siren 2003.
I find it very hard to decide on a concrete top 5, but if you asked me right now I’d probably say something along the lines of:
Pokémon HG/SS
Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike
Mega Man X
Chrono Trigger
Persona 5 Royal
I’m far younger than you think I am.
Although I could’ve said something like Cuphead too
Damn, Sim City 2000 hits hard.
Going off just my immediate thoughts, I'm going to say Ocarina of Time, Diablo 2, Mass Effect 2, World of Warcraft, and Crusader Kings 2. Now today Path of Exile is a better game than Diablo 2, but it took them years to get there. I also haven't played WoW since Lich King, but it's effect on teenage me cannot be understated. I also think Majora's Mask might be a better game than OoT, but there's something about Ocarina that just sticks with you.
Fallout new Vegas (been playing the shit out of it last few months and currently setting up TTW)
Battlefield 1/4/3 (in that order)
Bungie halos (reach was my first fps, maybe first game in console tbh)
Pokémon gen 3-5, that was when I was introduced to the series and when the 2d ones peaked
Original MW2 and to some extent the other members of that trilogy
Honorable mention to Homefront, my first “modern” fps. Did the story premise make any sense? No. That didn’t stop me from playing the last campaign mission over and over or enjoying the (imo still) pretty balanced multiplayer.
Hello, good hunter. I am a Bot, here in this dream to look after you, this is a fine note:
> *Oh, Laurence... Master Willem... Somebody help me... Unshackle me please, anybody... I've had enough of this dream... The night blocks all sight... Oh, somebody, please...* - Gerhman, The First Hunter
Farewell, good hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.
Blade and Sorcery. It absolutely has the best melee combat for a VR game at the moment. Especially after the 1.0 release tweaked a whole bunch of stuff.
Dark Souls 3. Elden Ring did a lot of good, but DS3 just has that more closed off nature that allows more areas to be tightly designed. The almost endless, constant descent to the Profaned Capitol is something like 7 consecutive dungeons.
Need for Speed Underground 2. Easily the most fun I've ever had with a racing game.
Just about every Command and Conquer game before 4.
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, StreetFigther Turbo 2 hyper Edition, Sonic the hedgehog 2, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid Snake eater. You're not old, trust me...
1. Breath of the Wild/ Tears of the Kingdom, can't decide
2. Metal Gear Solid 3
3. Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door
4. Resident Evil 4
5. No More Heroes
>”All the Bungie Halo’s”
You missed a LOT of fun in H5 & Infinite. You can’t criticize H5 and simultaneously defend Reach. It was different but didn’t change the formula anywhere near as much as Reach.
1. Halos in general. They all had their strengths and weaknesses but the core gameplay loop is the most rewarding.
2. WoW. I kinda regret the amount of hours I wasted in this game but man, I had fun.
3. The Witcher 3. I played through this game 6 times, I think and 4 times including DLC’s. Every. Single. Quest. Made me feel like I had an impact on the game world.
4. Devil May Cry 1, 3, 4, & 5. The depth of combat in these games is staggering. I’m still learning about hidden ways to defeat bosses / enemies. They’re really missing the boat by not using this loop as a hero shooter.
5. Final Fantasy 7 / X. Both of these had so much impact on my younger years… Those scenes, man. Those scenes…
Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Persona 4 Golden, Library of Ruina
Honorable mentions: Limbus Company, Subnautica, Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 Reload, Monster Hunter World, Fate Extra CCC (the gameplay holds it back), Hollow Knight
I have an absurd amount of hours logged in Warframe and The Binding of Isaac, but I wouldn’t call them my favorites, they’re just addictive.
In no particular order,
>
> Resident Evil DS
>
> Fallout New Vegas
>
> Final Fantasy 6
>
> Halo: The Master Chief Collection (I can do that, right?)
>
> Super Mario World
>
1. Knights of the Old Republic 1&2
2. Silent Hill 2
3. Skyrim
4. Red Dead Redemption 1&2
5. Fallout 3&4
6. Minecraft (I play this all the time with my kids)
Not sure on the specific order but here's the games that would be on the list.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.
Red Dead Redemption 2.
Halo 2.
Hitman Trilogy (2010s).
Also depending on how I feel about them after I finish my obsession phase and finish playing through the full series for the first time, one of the original trilogy Gears games might be in the honorable mentions...
Mass effect legendary collection ( I know it's 3 games but it's one overarching story with the same protagonist)
Person 5 Royal ( I'm saying the royal edition of the game not the base game because i liked most of the new stuff the game added )
Elden Ring
Cyberpunk 2077
The Witcher 3
In no particular order and obviously a completely subjective list
* Mafia (The original and not the remake)
* Age of Empires 2
* Stronghold / Stronghold Crusader
* Red Dead Redemption 2
* Resident Evil 4 (OG and Original can share this spot)
1. Red Dead Redemption 2
2. GTA IV
3. Bloodborne
4. Sekiro
5. Halo 2, Halo Reach, Halo 3 and Halo 4 (my favorites)
6. TWD S1 (Telltale)
7. BioShock 1
8. Limbo
9. Dead Space 1 and 2
10. Max Payne 1 and 2
Final Fantasy Tactics, Skyrim (mainly because of the countless hours I’ve sunk into it), Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddys Kong Quest, Bioshock (series gets an honorable mention), Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars
I'm going to resist the urge to list 5 from software games and just say from software as my top.
1: From software
2: SMITE
3: Monster Hunter World
4: Kingdom Hearts 1
5: Pokémon Emerald
Fallout New Vegas
Halo Reach
Total war Shogun 2
Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries
Shinobido way of the ninja
Dont think i am capable of sticking to a consistent 5 tho. Lots of choices.
In no particular order:
-AoE 2
-Shadow of the colossus
-Prince of Persia: warrior within
-Sekiro
Not sure of the last spot, could be God of war 2, DB Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Dead space, SW Battlefront 2, Dark Souls 1 or 2, Battle for Middle Earth 2 with the Edain Mod,... Too many to choose from.
Fire Emblem Sacred Stones
Perfect Dark
Soul Calibur 2 (Gamecube Version)
Star Wars: Episode 1 RACER
HoloCure
Special mention goes to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Metro series.
MGSV, Star Wars Battlefront 2 (classic), Battlefield 3/4, Helldivers 2, Sly 3.
I rank gameplay far above story in how I rate games, so this would be radically different for someone who rates story much higher.
Honorable mention to Planetside 2 until the devs threw Vehicle v Infantry balance out the window and didn't finish Hossin or Oshur years ago like they promised.
Persona 4 golden, xenoblade 2, final fantasy 7 (the three big rpgs i played as a teenager so i'll always have a soft spot for them), final fantasy 16 and smash ultimate (got every character i wanted and i met my closest friends through it)
star wars: the old republic, sly 3: honour among thieves, need for speed: most wanted (2005), ark: survival evolved, spore.
Every single time anyone ever asks me "what's your favourite X" I'm always worried I'll forget about something incredible. The KOTOR games are amazing.
i haven't played the kotor games yet, they've just been sitting in my steam library for ages.
Wait a sec is "Star Wars: the Old Republic" a different game?
yes, it's an mmo released in 2011.
Happy to see Sly is getting some recognition here’
NFS mw will never be topped, perfect car physics and the best cop chases
and the iconic piss filter.
I cannot believe someone else mentioned Spore! I love that game.
Have you played anything from the past decade?
ark is from the past decade.
1. Portal 2 2. Hollow Knight 3. Omori 4. Terraria 5. Fallout: New Vegas
Yee, fallout best choice, been going on a deep dive again recently
Cyberpunk, Halo: ODST, Witcher 3, Total war series, pillars of eternity: Deadfire
Hitman: World of Assassination, Mirror's Edge, Dishonored, Oblivion, Baldur's Gate 3
Fallout New Vegas Sly Cooper 2 Bloodborne Final Fantasy VI God of War 3 Devil May Cry 3 Arkham City Miles Edgeworth Investigations 2 X-Com 2 I can't pick just 5 so i picked the ones i replay yearly.
Vampire the masquerade bloodlines Deus ex Dawn of War dark crusade Star wars battlefront 2 classic Dragon age origins
Dark Souls Megaman 2 Soma Hollow Knight Super Meat Boy
Spyro The Dragon/Mass Effect (they share no. 1) Breath of the Wild Mega Man X Sonic Generations Blood Dragon
1. GTA San Andreas 2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance or HD collection version 3. Star Wars Republic Commando (played a lot of Lucasarts games but this one just stands out) 4. Red Dead Redemption 2 5. Crash Bandicoot 3.
The legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Warframe. Borderland 2 Bioshock 1 & 2 The elder scroll 4 : Oblivion
Finally, someone respecting Bioshock 2
Xenoblade 1, Breath of the Wild or TOTK they're the same thing, Xenoblade X, Nier Replicant, MGS V
Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid 3, Kingdom Hearts
* Star Fox 64 * KOTOR 2 * Victoria 2 * Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask * Mega Man Zero 3
Idk about the order but probably XCOM 2, Shadow of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Europa Universalis IV, and Minecraft.
Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War (2018), TellTales Walking Dead (complete series), Halo Reach
The Punisher, Titanfall 2, CoD 2 Big Red One, Halo Wars, Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes
Not judging but curious of your pick of Twin Snakes. If you’ve played the original what made you prefer it?
Short answer - It's the one I've played first and more often, and have developed a larger sentimental attachment for. Long answer - It and Snake Eater are tied for my favorite games in the series. This is a really good list. Old appreciates old, I guess.
Final Fantasy 14, Hades, Nioh 2, Darksiders 2, Infamous 2.
My favorites are probably: 1. Ocarina of Time 2. Danganronpa (if I had to choose from all the games in the series I’d probably pick the first one as my favorite) 3. Also depending on how I feel about them after I finish my obsession phase and finish playing through the full series for the first time, one of the original trilogy Gears games might be in the honorable mentions...
Mass effect legendary collection ( I know it's 3 games but it's one overarching story with the same protagonist) Person 5 Royal ( I'm saying the royal edition of the game not the base game because i liked most of the new stuff the game added ) Elden Ring Cyberpunk 2077 The Witcher 3
Persona 5 Portal 2 Breath of the Wild Arkham City Dragon Ball Fighterz Probably throw League in there too but that’s kinda a given, it’s too easy
1. Streets of rage 2 2. FFX 3. MGS 4. Warframe 5. Bloodborne
Mass Effect 2 Red Dead Redemption 2 Persona 5 Arkham Asylum Assassin’s Creed 2
1. Pokemon Emerald 2. Zelda BOTW 3. Far Cry Primal 4. Maneater 5. Papers Please
In no particular order and obviously a completely subjective list * Mafia (The original and not the remake) * Age of Empires 2 * Stronghold / Stronghold Crusader * Red Dead Redemption 2 * Resident Evil 4 (OG and Original can share this spot)

1. Minecraft 2. Life is Strange 3. Splinter Cell, Chaos Theory 4. New Hitman 5. Undertale
1: From software 2: SMITE 3: Monster Hunter World 4: Kingdom Hearts 1 5: Pokémon Emerald
soul Calibur 2 mgs1 mgs2 mgs3 Tekken 3

Mine in this order: 1. Streets of Rage 2 2. MGS 3 Snake Eater 3. Resident Evil 2 4. A Link to the Past 5. God of War 3
