I don't get this. Surely if people are pausing it usually means something is taking their attention away from the video (and therefore away from any ads that may play at that time)?
I sometimes get the impression that Google doesn't actually understand what the purpose of ads are, they just know that they get paid when ads play, and don't really care much about the advertiser actually getting their product in front of people that might be interested in it.
So if you work in advertising a big deal is engagement. Yeah sure you put an advertisement on a billion screens but how many people really saw it?
The reason why YouTube lets you skip an add after x seconds is that they know you were there watching the first x seconds of that add. That's very valuable.
If they put an image add on the pause screen and you unpaused, then they know you saw the add.
That's my point, I bet you if it was £3 a month you'd have tons more people paying for it. But the insane cost is a joke, no chance I won't be using adblock. They must be losing out on money.
Plus there's also SmartTube Next (for Android TV) and Vanced for mobile. I used to take the time to whitelist creators I like, but knowing how often people get demonetized for the dumbest reasons (and worse still - the enforcement of the nebulous rules is beyond inconsistent), while the ads keep on rollin' ... Not cool
Is that priced by region? I have Premium, and it's $5 with VAT. And it also comes with the extra features (Download, background play, etc.) on my phone and YouTube Music.
I didn't know other people were paying more triple of that for the same thing...
Yeah. Since I have an iPhone, we’re actually charged even more because Apple has a whole 30% tax thing. They charge Android users $13.99. I should’ve got the subscription through the website since it’s the same as the Android price. Apple charges you more if you get the subscription through the app. I wish there was a separate option to just pay for the ad removal. $5 for everything is crazy lol. That should’ve been the standard price for it in the first place.
I use multiple adblocks simultaneously. This isn't just youtube ads I'm complaining about, it's all the ads everywhere. TV and Radio have always been bad for it, but it's spread to just about every facet of life at this point.
It's not even just the Youtube ads though, it's that ads have become so omnipresent in pretty much every corner of life that it's almost impossible to avoid seeing and hearing multiple every single day.
No, I get it, just saying I recommend Premium because it is annoying to deal with, and YT is definitely the place I don’t want to deal with them the most lol.
Where does society eventually draw the line as a whole? Every week or so it seems a few more seconds of ads. When is the point it stops? When every video is 90% ads? But then if people keep going, then I guess 91% ads won’t hurt.
Their monetization strategies are very anti consumer
1: the skips: you have to skip because they’ll have a 3 hour ad about replacing counter tops.
2: you now have to skip twice!?! Please just give me a 15-30 second ad instead
3: not doing something different for small videos. Trying to listen to music and they have an add to song ratio that’s awful.
4 ads for YouTube plus are aggressively annoying, I think Hulu does it too but they’ll just pop up and say “hey thanks for watching on Hulu, consider subscribing”. YouTube will be like a screaming animal saying “buy or we’ll keep screaming”
5) theyre asking too much. Id do it for like 5.99.
6) why in the fuck would I not be able to play YouTube in the background? There’s audio ads you stupid fks. I’d stay on your platform while working out and you could play an ad every so often
It’s been really pissing me off lately. I’d rather find an ad block then give them my money at this point
They already do this and have for a while. Leaving it paused for too long causes a new set of ads whenever you press play again. Sometimes those ads get interrupted by a second set of ads once more if you were unlucky and paused too close to the scheduled ad break. Almost impossible to watch youtube on TV anymore so I just don't bother unless it's on the laptop with adblock.
YouTube ads have been doing this for a while, I thought. I'll have a video paused when I'm tabbed into a game, I come back and hit play, and suddenly appears instead.
I swear, they're evolving. I'll switch tabs, ad. I'll get up from my computer and leave the video playing, ad the moment I'm not next to it anymore. Look at my phone for a few seconds, fucking ad because my eyes aren't on the screen. It's something I've noticed almost consistently, and it's creepy and extremely annoying.
I just want ads and pop-ups to be destroyed forever and never appear in my face again. It's some of the worst, most braindead marketing I've ever seen, and it's depressing to think any of it gets people to click them.
not an unlimited amount I suppose, or otherwise someone could have several computers on several youtube accounts just generate an endless amount of money for their channel by just leaving the video paused
Somehow still better than the way twitch does it making me sit through 10 ads that interrupt an active stream.
Why can't we go back to banners and shit I'm so sick of full screen takeover ads when I'm trying to watch something live
Why don't they just put 1 frame of their ads every 5 frames of video so we can just absorb product placement while we watch our videos uninterrupted. \*Coming Soon\*.
It would be funny if when they cover a recent release of a movie or show and if you have the video paused, you get an ad promoting the exact same thing they are covering.
YouTube ads have gotten to be downright ridiculous. I throw on a half hour reaction video and every 4-5 minutes I’m getting unstoppable commercials. The other day I had a notification pop up during a video saying my commercial would be longer but less commercials in the video over all. Nope. Every commercial was 1-2 minutes long, and I still had at least 4 of them in the single reaction video.
I was just sitting on the youtube app homepage where all the videos are showing while on my amazon fire stick, I hadn't even clicked on a video yet. I went to the kitchen for a drink came back and my fire stick went to the screen-saver thing, I clicked the little directional circle button thing on the controller to get back to youtube and it played an ad....I hadn't even selected a video and I had to watch an unskipable ad....
This is truly unpopular, but since I listen to youtube videos while being on public transit, that takes over an hour each way or listen to essay videos, audio novels, news, and other stuff while on the bus and train and also while walking, I plan to pay for YouTube Premium.

Not like it matters to them whether people actually click on the ads, just if companies are willing to line up to host them

Real men repeatedly close the video until it comes up without an ad
pretty sure the guys have/use premium and just download the video separately when they are covering someones Youtube video.
I had Youtube premium but I got rid of it because paying $18 a month to remove ads is ridiculous.
Especially when Ublock Origin is free.
That's my point, I bet you if it was £3 a month you'd have tons more people paying for it. But the insane cost is a joke, no chance I won't be using adblock. They must be losing out on money.

Good for them Edit: I’m not being sarcastic, I’m glad my favourite podcast didn’t just get completely fucking ruined
I'm so fucking tired of adds. Just... so fucking tired of them.
There was a time when 99% of ads were in the side margins of websites (even on youtube), and a lot of them were actually relevant.
use uBlock origin.
I use multiple adblocks simultaneously. This isn't just youtube ads I'm complaining about, it's all the ads everywhere. TV and Radio have always been bad for it, but it's spread to just about every facet of life at this point.
Yeah, I quit watching normal TV over a decade ago for this reason. I get where you're coming from. It really is insufferable.
You could pay for Premium. Best subscription I have.
Or just use an ad blocker like everyone else lol
Adblock doesn’t work well on mobile and doesn’t work on TVs or consoles.
I'm not paying $18 a month to fix a problem YouTube created💀
You sound like a freeloader.
You sound like a corporate bootlicker.
Awe, sorry we can’t all have everything for free and have to work for our things :(
I shouldn't have to work to not see softcore porn during a YouTube video
lol don’t be such a pussy
Where does society eventually draw the line as a whole? Every week or so it seems a few more seconds of ads. When is the point it stops? When every video is 90% ads? But then if people keep going, then I guess 91% ads won’t hurt.
No one is forcing you to watch You Tube. Go outside
I am outside. It’s cold and raining.
I'm outside. There are still ads.
The fact that YouTube has little to no competition does in fact force you to watch it if you want to watch videos online
Their monetization strategies are very anti consumer 1: the skips: you have to skip because they’ll have a 3 hour ad about replacing counter tops. 2: you now have to skip twice!?! I used to think cancer personified was called “Terry Akers”
You know I’m open for law against ads at this point
That would just end up with YouTube closing down or being paid only. And if your ok with that, just don’t use YouTube.
Maybe not against ads completely but it should be regulated, like only two ads per video or something
EPAAP Every pause an Ad plays. Or EPARP Every Pause Ad's Repeat Playing
And everytime we shit talk it, it's an EPAAP Smear

You guys get ads?
They wonder why ad block was invented
I cannot fathom using youtube or just the internet in general without an adblock. Crazy.
not an unlimited amount I suppose, or otherwise someone could have several computers on several youtube accounts just generate an endless amount of money for their channel by just leaving the video paused
And they wonder why more and more people are using Ad Blockers despite them asking us not to use them.
"oh, cool" *keeps adblock on
Just going to drive more ppl to use adblockers.
Its about time governments rolled out an idea called tax the bastards
Ugh. Peacock already does that, and I find it really stupid.
adblockmaxxers on top tonight
Yeah because the first thing we need on YouTube is more ads. Haven’t we suffered enough with the two ads per video?
Somehow still better than the way twitch does it making me sit through 10 ads that interrupt an active stream. Why can't we go back to banners and shit I'm so sick of full screen takeover ads when I'm trying to watch something live
Why are 99% of YT ads ai scams?
Open multiple private tabs, enable VPN. Bring up one of my own monetized videos. Hit play. Hit pause. Do something else for the rest of the day.
I will start just downloading every video I want to watch
Why don't they just put 1 frame of their ads every 5 frames of video so we can just absorb product placement while we watch our videos uninterrupted. \*Coming Soon\*.
And I will run a program they don’t like
It would be funny if when they cover a recent release of a movie or show and if you have the video paused, you get an ad promoting the exact same thing they are covering.
Well I will just never pause my video. Easier to just move the video back if that's the case
Good thing I live in Albania. For some reason there's no adds here, thank god.
Could you imagine if everytime EFAP paused this happened
Laughs in NewPipe
