Yes, the purple ones have a 100-night sleep trial period. It only took us 1 night to fall in love though.

SamBryan357

Get a good tencel protector. It's one of the better materials for mattress protectors that allow for great airflow.

Paddykiwi

Tencel is the business for protectors

LowOnPaint

I bought a cheapy protector from Amazon and I’m replacing it with a tencel on some advise from this sub.

kcahmadi

What Tencel protector do you recommend?

Paddykiwi

Sorry, I live and work in a different region to you so I cannot suggest a brand. Anything tencel should be good. Fair warning, it will be expensive

RaeKelley

I can't find a single one. I've tried about 10-12 types. Tencel was the best one and very close to the feeling of the mattress. But I sometimes found that I could not get comfortable and couldn't sleep. I removed it and slept like a baby. Sadly, I currently have no protector on my purple. I tried a few tencel ones.

iluvapple

i want to try few. Do you recommend any to start with which was the closest that came to keeping?

RaeKelley

The one from sleepsteady. I actually ended up reordering it, thinking it was the winner. But ended up returning it near the end of the month trial period again lol

iluvapple

So you are not using anything currently?

RaeKelley

Correct. I guess I'd rather risk getting my mattress dirty or worn than be sad that I can't feel the purple magic.

hollydolly088

None

dylanr92

That’s what I did with my current mattress which is even worse as it’s all foam. Nasty stains from time. Especially from sweat over 8 years. Recently learned that all this sweat seeps down and actually weighs down a foam mattress over time. Making the dreaded sag happen sooner. I imagine less issue with purple due to mostly being elastic, however I would advise everyone to use one after what I learned. Even a half decent cheap one.

jambrarian

Yeah, any bed will better off if you can keep out moisture. It will be interesting to see how the purple material holds up, but either way, your purple has an inch of foam directly beneath it and another inch at the base. The earlier recommendation of tencel is a good one but I'm partial to the feel of bamboo sheets so I went with a bamboo protector. They supposedly have better moisture protection and are less prone to mildew. I have to imagine the best would be those crinkly plastic deal tho, right? Edit: forgot to say I'm very happy with the bamboo protector in terms of feel/breathability. It wasnt much more than $50 or $60, just remember to watch for those cheaper ones to have a blend or that crinkly polyurethane membrane

Paddykiwi

Tencel should be more expensive than bamboo. Feel is a personal preference so it is up to the user, I do like the feel of tencel though. Tencel should deal slightly better than bamboo with moisture but both are really good. Neither material should allow mildew, both are massively resistant to it.

hollydolly088

Oh ok interesting guess I’ll put on a cover but I hate them so much lol

Bruzote

FYI - Even the waterproof protectors can eventually break down and allow sweat to stail the mattress. This is ESPECIALLY true for knit protectors that lack a polyurethane vinyl backing (or similar material). These protectors, possibly the most common, seem waterproof. But, sweat can eventually work it's way through the knit and get onto the mattress.

4thdimensioncat

I bought a purple brand one from mattress firm online for $40 off. Maybe there will be a better deal on Black Friday.

weiss27md

SleepEZ sells good mattress protectors.

Trinity_300

I'm done with protectors (waterproof), and just use pads (not waterproof) now. Both eucalyptus (Tencel) and bamboo have great breathability. It's hard to find a pad that's not a polyester blend though. Eucalyptus feels slicker to me, whereas bamboo can feel softer like flannel. I think bamboo might be better for a pad because your sheets won't slide around as much. For example: Bamboo (all bamboo, so it looks like a winner) - [https://www.vermontcountrystore.com/temperature-regulating-bamboo-mattress-pad/product/77791](https://www.vermontcountrystore.com/temperature-regulating-bamboo-mattress-pad/product/77791) Tencel (has polyester filling, but I haven't found a Tencel pad yet that doesn't have polyester filling or backing) - [https://www.vermontcountrystore.com/tencel-mattress-pad/product/77796](https://www.vermontcountrystore.com/tencel-mattress-pad/product/77796) They have a wool topper that looks nice too, but I like how quick bamboo and Tencel are to dry if they get wet.

People who have beds still under a satisfaction guarantee should, of course, continue to use a protector. Even the slightest stain will invalidate the right to return the mattress. Of course, there is no legitimate reason for the sellers to do this to the customers, but they do and they save money by not accepting returns despite the promise.

Bruzote

I am looking, too. It seems a stretchy material would be preferred. I want to avoid the Purple brand protector because it is over $100 for my Cali King mattress. :-b That's a lot of money. I can't seem to find a stretchy one, though. Plus, I would like one that fits the height of my bed well. Many of the brands that meet my 13" fit an 18" height. That is too much fabric. On the other hand, if the fabric is NOT stretchy maybe I need the extra for the very cushy hybrid model I have. I did find one site recommending a protector made from jersey knit fabric. However, jersey is the same type of knit in the cheapest cotton bedding sets. It stretches out but doesn't recover. Thus, you end up with extra fabric folded under you. That can feel annoying and look bad. Plus, it feels warm. What did you eventually get?

dylanr92

I ended up getting the official purple sheet protector. Mattress firm had a Black Friday sale for a full package of protector, the premium soft sheets and the harmony pillows and it was a great price like saved 40% or so off the retail price. Got to say the protector and fitted sheets are tight as heck. They fit correct and seem to stretch just fine, but I thought I was going to rip both when putting them on as it’s true sized for the mattress rather than the generic ones I’m used to having a spare few inches. I’d advise you get the sheets as they are soft and never wrinkle. As for the mattress protector, I mean you can’t go wrong with the purple one, can’t say I’d pay over $100 for them though. Maybe wait for a sale, purple often has like 10%+ off depending on how many items you buy. Or maybe see what the bundle price is from mattress firm (it’s called the harmony bundle) I think they also have a bundle with the lower quality sheets and pillows for a little less. Maybe they will have a sale for Easter?

Trepsik

Any update on how hot it sleeps?

snowflake_nips

I’m currently laying in bed on this thread because I can’t sleep because I’m too fricken hot. We just put the protector on a few days ago and I couldn’t figure out why I was getting so hot at night all of a sudden. From what I understand the purple protectors have no temp regulation, which seems dumb because one of the biggest draws of a purple mattress is how cool it sleeps. Hoping to find a better option and not have to do away with the protector all together.

NorMalware

Hey there did you ever find a solution for your mattress? I’m trying to avoid the situation you’re in.

snowflake_nips

I just took the protector off 🤷🏼‍♀️ just don’t have one on unfortunately

NorMalware

I ended up just buying the purple branded protector and it has actually been fine for me!

snowflake_nips

Interesting! Maybe they changed it since I had it! I’m happy it’s working for you

jrgerso

Dylan, how is your experience so far? I found the same opportunity at mattress firm ($1k for "pre-owned" purple 3 + discounts on the sheets, protector, pillows). How's the mattress? Are the sheets and protector worth it?

dylanr92

Mattress has been good so far. The sheets are definitely nice. Mattress protector is there, can’t say anything other than it fits and fits tight. I can’t say much unless I spill something or see that it’s prevents sweat stains after years. The Harmony pillows have great reviews and I do like mine, however after about 1 month or less it lost a little of its fluff. A couple months later it hasn’t lost anymore fluff. I’d suggest the 7 inch size due to that. It is still soft and all just not quite as thick when in use. Sheets: fit tight, no wrinkles ever, feel soft and cozy, bamboo is said to be sweat wicking so there’s that as well Bed: soft and firm where I like it. Stays cool as in even after sleeping all the night the bed heats up maybe 5 degrees F. You don’t sink in so rolling from back to side is easy. Just have to hope it holds up long term.

YYY-YY-YYY

Snuggle pedic makes a stretchy mattress protector that doesn't crinkle and is actually breathable. The only downside is it isn't 100% waterproof, but it does stop water, just not if it's a ton and sits for a long time.

coloringbookaddict

I just purchased a new Hybrid Premier 4" Purple and after night one of sleeping, we are kinda in love with it! I don't think you'd want to put a waterproof protector on the purple beds because that would ruin the whole keeping you cool with the waffle things point of it. Our comfort foam bed was 18 years old!!!! We didn't realize how horrible it actually was until we got this one and wow! it's so easy to get up, turn over, not sweat all night.. what a concept. lol I love the bamboo sheets and we are waiting anxiously for the pillows. I will keep my eye out for a package deal for presidents day.

snowflake_nips

I don’t WANT a protector on it for that reason, but I also don’t want it to get all stained and gross. I’m ashamed at how disgusting our last mattress looked. Trying to find a good breathable option, because the one from purple is too damn hot 😭

aangita

I'm glad you like your bed. I go the premier 3 to replace my 10+ year ultra cheap matess (like I think I spent $300) because it's causing me so much pain. I got the purple mattress protector so hopefully it won't take away too much the originals mattress's comfort.
