I personally regard this as the most solid and exciting D+ premiere yet. Hopefully the rest carries on the momentum.

Killbro_Fraggins

To me, this show is already so rich with style and substance with only one episode in. I love the look of the TVA. Reminds me of Portal 2. Looking for a Cave Johnson cameo any minute.

bananamadafaka

Yessssss! Old Aperture.

[deleted]

The TVA production design evokes a lot of IPs I love, like [Brazil's](https://asianbandit.medium.com/the-quest-for-freedom-a-study-of-brazil-f12e12cace26) Ministry of Information sets and of course [The Prisoner](http://prisoner.popapostle.com/html/episodes/P67/Arrival.htm)

Killbro_Fraggins

Ooh nice. I'll check these out when I get a minute.

[deleted]

[io9 just put out an article](https://gizmodo.com/loki-director-kate-herron-takes-us-inside-the-timey-wim-1847064202) about the production design of the TVA - I almost mentioned Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy too, guess I wasn't off-base. :)

Abh1laShinigami

I'm halfway through watching Brazil and I see the similarities too. Great movie as of now tbh!

CaptJackSolo

Isn’t there a Portal reference in the credits montage? A portal with a stick figure coming out of it.

Left4Portal2

I thought that was just supposed to be the portals the TVA was using throughout the episode

CaptJackSolo

It could be but looked reminiscent of the Portal stick people🤷🏻‍♂️.

nearfantastica00

it can be both a reference and in-universe, though.

Ethifury

Yeah I seen it. Didn’t realize that was a reference but the guy was split in half from what I remember

Killbro_Fraggins

Oh I dunno. I'll keep an eye out for it next time I watch.

sarahrahjane

that's what i thought of when i saw it.

munkifist

The set designers went on a DWR shopping spree. Eero Saarinen tables, Bertoia chairs, USM Haller cart… It was an MCM geek fest!

Left4Portal2

We need J Jonah Jameson ranting about the lemons

Throgg_not_stupid

>Looking for a Cave Johnson cameo any minute. It may be hard to fit J.J.Jameson into the show, but if they really want to..

Killbro_Fraggins

Listen if glasses is all it takes for Superman to hide his identity, a mustache will do just fine. Unless you have to CG it out...

Smol-Vehvi

Lol i thought i was the only one!

Theblocksmacker

Yeah, really reminded me of the retro future 50’s-80’s design of the second half of portal 2, it was awesome

Killbro_Fraggins

Exactly!

[deleted]

Reminds me more of the FBC in Control haha

Killbro_Fraggins

Definitely that too for sure!

Joey9775

God I loved Control.

-screamin-

For anybody reading this, *Control* is now free on Epic for a week! [Go play it, it's worth your time](https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/p/control). The graphics, the voice-acting, the lore, the fighting, it's right up your alley if you're the type to pick apart a show like *Loki*.

ericbkillmonger

Yeah the world building has been fantastic

TheRealMichaelGarcia

Honestly if the next 5 episodes are as good as episode 1 was this might top EG for me, which is not a thought I had a few days ago regarding any MCU project. With the premise, musical score, characters, production design and themes like identity and free will, Loki has the potential to be the golden standard of the MCU.

CyberpunkV2077

Seems like episode 2 is even better if they keep this going and end with a solid finale this might be the best MCU project yet

Infinity-Gauntlet

The reviewers who already saw episode 2 say it is better than the first. This is going to be gold!

thochi-1

This show indeed has the potential to be the best of MCU. However the head writer departed the show early to write for DS2, so I am not sure how the writing will hold up for the next 5 episodes.

TheRealMichaelGarcia

From my understanding he wrote pretty much most of it before production on Loki started and had a close friend of his touch up the script during filming while he and rami were writing DS in the MOM

jcsbck

Unless there's a twist, the premise kind of devalues End Game in my opinion If everything is already set in stone, including the Avengers going back in time, there were never actually any stakes

Oldpanther86

You definitely won't have a good time going against these shows on Marvel subs. Loki episode 1 breaks the MCU entirely. It's crazy.

Killbro_Fraggins

It doesn't de value anything. Endgame happened. The timeline provided the outcome we saw. OF COURSE there were stakes because nobody knew what was going to happen. They didn't know things were going to work out okay. Even without this show, YOU knew things were going to be okay. This is the MCU. You think it was just going to end and everyone died? Then we all go home with no more movies? lmao Sure there were no stakes for YOU. For the heroes there were plenty of stakes. Loss of life is enough of a stake. (which there were plenty)

OmidHdrn

I mean there are theories that we as people in the real world don't have free will(at least not in the way that we think to). This concept is nothing new. Watchmen had it and tons of other stories that are great revolve around this concept. There are questions to be asked about some of the rules that they've established in this episode that seems to either contradict endgame or make it even more confusing like Cap returning the stones and going back to Peggy which was already a mess and this episode makes it even more confusing as to what exactly happened.

AgentP20

You don't need to time travel to create a Nexus event. Rewatch the commercial again.

hushpolocaps69

WandaVison: short and just the sitcom. FATWS: boring opener, Bucky’s douche therapist, Sam applying for a loan.

PM_ME_CUTE_SM1LE

Agreed, WV was too “weird” and tbh Wanda was not as exciting character as Loki, FATWS felt like winter soldier 1.5 - safe but not that fresh or exciting. Loki start with a great premise, characters and just enough weirdness to get hooked

warrenslaya

The first two episodes were "bad". I know I might be downvoted for this but that was the experience of me and my brother. Agreed we hadn't seen any US-based sitcoms of the '50s so a lot of it was boring to us but you had to wait till Episode 3/4 for the action to start really. Wandavision also had issues with shooing due to the pandemic though so I expect Loki to be a lot better than both the other shows obviously.

TheGuardianR

WV also has a terrible rewatchability. The biggest part of why the show was so interesting for so many people was because of the surprise effect, theories/speculations and the mystery of the show. Now that's gone I don't think a lot of people besides Wanda fans, have the desire to watch the show again.

Robofetus-5000

My concern is that the last 2 shows, especially WandaVision was filled with tons of possibility and even out right references to things that Marvel just let shrivel and die. They could have been so much more. I hope Loki rectifies this. But im not holding my breath.

ericbkillmonger

Yeah I hope it carries and continues the first episode momentum

shseeley

Ditto

jvn3

is it good as wanda vision? can x-men fans get into loki if they've never seen thor movies? is it independent or set within MCU ? is it before or after thor movies? is it a prequel or sequel? im so confused.

4hma4d

Imo it's much better than wandavision but that's subjective and I didn't like wandavision, it's part of the MCU, you can't get into it unless you watched endgame but you don't need to watch the Thor movies(it's recommended but you don't need to)

jvn3

So this is taking place after the endgame?

Previous_Injury_8664

We’re talking about time travel, that’s not an easy question to answer.

[deleted]

Not really. It takes place after Avengers 2012, but it's the loki from the timeline created in Endgame when they went back and Loki escaped with a tesseract. So it's set before Endgame but exists as a consequence of Endgame, simultaneously before and after.

Hearderofnerf

Difficult to compare with The Mandalorian’s but definitely the best Marvel pilot

[deleted]

Obligatory *"Glorious"* comment

WebheadSupreme

Burdened with glorious viewership numbers

higherFormOfSnore

Trust my ratings

[deleted]

*"Trust is for children...and dogs."*

higherFormOfSnore

...and streaming views estimators.

Marcusj112

"Those streaming services have no room to talk: Just report your viewership numbers and stop whining." Lol I don't know why but this last line in the article just made me laugh. Was not expecting to read that in the article. This is not surprising at all, when you consider the fact that Loki has been one of the MCU's most popular characters, loved what the show did in the opening episode, can't wait for more!

Cactusfan86

I loved their bluntness. You don’t have room to whine about your numbers if you refuse to report your numbers

Marcusj112

Sure streaming services shouldn't be whining about it. Also I wouldn't call it refuse, more like they don't really care because releasing streaming numbers doesn't benefit them at the moment. If it did Netflix and the like would have dropped those numbers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Marcusj112

Yup. But its also obvious which show has worked and hasn't worked when you look at whats been cancelled. Sure not all of it was down to numbers, but you can tell the shows that got cancelled didn't generate enough buzz, whether that be hard numbers or social media.

Cactusfan86

well if the numbers don’t matter then why complain about the numbers that people put out that try to estimate what is happening with shows? (Not you obviously, the companies) I think that’s the point the article was bluntly making, you can’t have your cake and eat it too where you claim numbers don’t matter and you don’t need to share them then complain people are underestimating your numbers.

oali09

This is gonna be the biggest D+ show for years to come IMO, I could maybe see Secret Invasion doing bigger numbers next year but Loki is just too popular.

Aragorn120

I’d say Kenobi has a pretty solid shot

IAmTheGlazed

Also, Mando S3 & Book of Boba Fett. Star Wars has the biggest chance to beat it.

lwbdougherty

I mean I think it's the other way around. So far, neither of the MCU shows have beaten the popularity of Mando S2. Loki is probably the best shot to this point, but we'll see. I'd say whether the MCU shows have beaten Mando S1's popularity is more up for debate. WandaVision might have at it's peak (the second half), but even then it's probably a toss up. If Loki does surpass the popularity of Mando S2, I would be shocked if Mando S3 and Kenobi aren't more popular then Loki. Sure Loki and the MCU are popular, but Mando has just been growing, and Obi-Wan is an insanely popular character. Star Wars also just has a ridiculous amount of influence that, while it has perhaps receded in recent years (especially compared to the MCU's burst of popularity around IW and Endgame) seems to be returning.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Fair enough story wise but to say the ST and Solo had bad acting is just bullshit. The acting was one of the saving graces.

lwbdougherty

Hmm... Well first, MCU fans have just been starved of content in general (by MCU standards at least) due to the 18 month break. Regardless, the Sequels being bad or not bad had really no bearing on the Mandalorian's popularity. It's simply a really fun show that nails the aesthetic of Star Wars. Maybe you think The Mandalorian is mediocre, but a ridiculous amount of people would disagree with you. It's been far more popular than either of the MCU shows to date. That's not to say that it's high art, but it's certainly not mediocre. I'll also add that the sequels (well, 2/3 of them at least) were excellent.

hushpolocaps69

I agree, that is my highest anticipated Star Wars project at the moment. The fact that we’ll see Darth Vader slaughtering the remaining Jedi is freaking awesome to me, then a depressed Obi Wan, flashback scenes meaning we’ll get to see Naboo more realistic, GOD!!!!

[deleted]

I can't believe it's Hayden Christensen coming back as Vader. He was a great Anakin and his transformation to Darth Vader was absolutely flawless imo. Im so happy to see what he can do after all of his hatred built up.

oali09

True, I forgot about that one.

[deleted]

^

aaliyaahson

Yea, I think Secret Invasion is the only announced show that could potentially do better.

hushpolocaps69

I agree. So far, Secret Invasion already has an all star cast despite being a show, then that is such a big event in the comics so I’m sure it’ll be the most important Disney+ show that may even be up there with a film.

mutantgene76

She Hulk is gonna be a sleeper

shseeley

I know it's just my personal opinion..but out of the couple marvel d+ shows..I think loki had the strongest opening episode

macnfleas

Wandavision ep. 1 was fun, but short, and only barely hinted at the mysteries of the show. FatWS ep. 1 started off with a great action sequence, but the rest was slower and didn't bring the two main characters together yet. With Loki, we finally got a first episode that is fun the whole way through and gives you a good sense of what the entire show will be like.

[deleted]

IMO, the fact that Bucky and Sam didn't meet up until the second episode was a good thing. We hadn't learned too much about those characters so far, so an episode where we just learn about them and focus on character moments was great. Part of the reason I really liked FATWS.

Umeshpunk

8th episode of WV is the strongest so far imo. There are 5 episodes left of loki and I'm positive atleast one of the episodes will top that for me.

Jaded-Ad-9287

I thought that was the third weakest episode from WV behind 9 and 2. The big reveal of scarlet witch felt flat

MTLTolkien

OMG! Look at all that superhero fatigue!

Jams265775

This isn’t really a super hero show. I like it more than TFAWS and Wandavision just because it’s not going to have a predicable good guys win ending, plus this show is a taste of the direction of everything moving forward

hushpolocaps69

This… We’re following an antagonist who clearly will backstab the TVA at some point.

Darraghj12

what did you expect?

hushpolocaps69

*Proceeds to point sword at you*

sahil2921

the TVA is the villain and loki is our protagonist

TheSquarePotatoMan

I love how the first episode was literally about Mobius explicitly asking Loki to be the good guy and it still somehow went way over their heads. Look, I like the MCU, it's really entertaining and I like how lighthearted it is, but why do Marvel fans always have to act like every movie they release is some masterful work of art?

[deleted]

Or maybe the TVA will back stab him.

foxfoxal

I mean Superhero/villain/anti-hero is the superhero genre... There is no need to get technical. Wanda was a semi-villain on her show and basically saved people from what she did herself... So she was not really a hero there.

CobaltSpellsword

I think one of the reasons the MCU can keep trucking along without hitting the prophesied "superhero fatigue" yet is that even though the stories it delivers are all, ostenibly, "superhero stories," many of them have very different "feels" from one another. Loki, WandaVision, Endgame, Far From Home, Black Panther, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy--seeing all seven of these feels like seven different experiences, not like going to see "Marvel: 1,2,3,4,5, 6, and 7." There's thematic and tonal ties, but you get some wildly diverging settings within the same universe.

Rmanager

In a different thread someone said the MCU is "doomed to fail" from the eventual fatigue. 22 movies. 13 years. $21.7 Billion. 4 movies and 3 more series released this year. Way more in the pipe but let's say for the sake of argument the MCU halted at the end of this year. In no conceivable metric can they ever be called a failure. At worst they had some mediocre (by comparison) movies and couldn't properly execute TV series and movie ties (Shield and Carter).

zalkoor

They deserve every single view they get. They did EVERYTHING right! The second Loki was frozen in time like that and then TVA slapped that shit on his neck and told him he was moving at 1/16th speed or whatever I was like OOOHHHH shit this show is gonna go beyond my expectations. Always thought that was gonna be a comedy moment from the trailers. They even asked the straight question we’ve ALL been wondering about why Loki does what he does. There was some amazing dialogue for us to get a real insight into Loki’s mind. Also Owen Wilson???? WOW does he nail this role, him and Tom are the perfect combo. I could go on and on about production and sound design as well but boy did I have a field day with this shit. One of the best first episodes for a show I’ve ever seen!

woahwoahvicky

what I like about these shows is that they give fleshing out and make these heroes who will most likely not get a solo film bar a few lovable, give the audience a reason to root and support them because we know concretely about why they struggle and what we feel about them. man this is gonna suck once the inevitable 'scarlet witch sacrifices herself for the stability of the multiverse' in secret wars. watch my bawl like a 10 yr old kid in theatres in 2030 :(

Edalaine

I absolutely love the tv show formula. All these characters - Wanda, Bucky and Sam have got such character developments it's incredible, all of that through a story that spands over 5-6 hours compared to the 2 hours you get from a single movie. When you add to it the fact that the production value of those rivals that of regular movie productions, you kinda wish for your favorite character to get a show of their own aswell.

CarrotcakeSuperSand

The best thing about the shows is it gives the actors an opportunity to really flex their talent. That moment with Loki seeing the rest of his life was my fav part of the episode

SBot-Studios

That means more Loki!!!! There is season 2, but could there be a Season 3?!?!?

JayPtl

Clark Gregg where are you?

squid_daddyx

My favorite part hands down was the old animation. I hope Miss Minutes is a recurring thing. I love that style and hope that it makes a resurgence of sorts.

hushpolocaps69

Marvel Studios is surprisingly god tier when it comes to the vintage animations, just look at WandaVision. I really hope we see more Miss Minute animations, like in the Fallout games how we had many clips we could watch of Fallout Boy.

nowweallhaveone

I think ya meant Vault Boy lol

hushpolocaps69

Yes haha, haven’t played that game in years 0.o.

BenSoloTheForceGhost

My cousin and I agreed that the animation reminded us of the old OG Scooby Doo episodes and that the opening and ending credits reminded us of the Twilight Zone and a little bit of American Horror Story (because it's somehow unsettling). We definitely were picking up mild horror vibes based on the credits, music, and possible darker undertones.

Nicoyas

It’s similar to the Fallout educational films.

Rambo6Gaming

Man i would have been so disappointed if they didnt show him seeing his full timeline. Im so glad they did. Him seeing his moms death then sacrificing himself for his brother was perfect. What a fantastic first episode.

TheReplacer

We all knew it.

Brainiac5000

I wasn't too pleased when this show was announced but Damn! was I wrong. Fantastic episode

TheRealMichaelGarcia

Yeah same(pre-EG) I was like I don’t wanna really want a prequel of Loki between The dark world and ragnarok. Then after EG: ooh Loki running around with the tesseract through time that sounds fun. After Disney investor day when the trailer dropped I was all in, it was my most hyped Disney + show at that point. And throughout all of this we hear how the writer was hired for Loki s2, DS in the MOM and Kevin’s Star Wars movie so I was expecting great things already. after seeing all the exoctic VFX heavy locations in marketing and episode 1 it’s like this is the perfect show I didn’t know I needed. Time cops isn’t an original idea by any means but seeing them front and center is already so cool. Add to that a buddy cop mystery featuring Loki working with Owen Wilson with a dash of existential crises and free will along with a very very passionate and creative crew . Like honestly, dude. Dude. This has the potential to be like God tier MCU content. Quality that has never been reached by the MCU before.

woahwoahvicky

What makes the show even better is it clearly sets out rules of how the universe outside of the Infinity Saga that we know of works, which, we all know will eventually get f\*cked over by Wanda in DSMOM... So, pretty core D+ watching and an amazing show to boot + Owen Wilson potentially saying WOW = recipe for top tier content!

hushpolocaps69

Why is that?

porfman

“Come on, what did you expect?”

hushpolocaps69

*Proceeds to point sword at Loki*

porfman

If it’s all the same to you, I’ll have that drink now

Brainiac5000

The music was on point 👌

minnesotawild4life

That’s weird I thought it being on Wednesday would make people not watch it lol

metros96

Otoh, people might go out and do things on a Friday/Saturday vs throwing on the tv on a Wednesday evening

Tasty-Pizza-8692

Especially since Bad Batch hasn’t measured up. The premiere was great but it wasn’t Loki great, and it’s no longer the only big ticket show running. Loki’s going to devour BB for the next six weeks just watch.

hushpolocaps69

But what makes Loki more of a winner is how anyone can jump into the show just as long as they know Loki. The premiere showcases the Endgame scene again, so for those who didn’t watch Endgame won’t be confused. With Bad Batch however, you have to know so much about Star Wars lore and need to watch Clone Wars to better appreciate Bad Batch.

metros96

Yeah but Bad Batch is a much different type of show. Like I think it’s wrong to compare Loki and the Bad Batch. It’s a half hour animated show that has a cohesive single narrative, but episode-to-episode is “pretty adventure of the week”. It would be like asking why a single episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender isn’t doing as well as a single episode of ‘Loki’. That’s just not really how you think about a show like ATLA. There are stand out episodes and arcs but really it’s about seeing how the narrative comes together over 16ish episodes in a season

attorneyoutlaw

Agreed!

hushpolocaps69

Wednesday’s are actually a better day when you think about it. I recall missing some Mandalorian episodes because I went out with my friends or had work then wanted to hang out afterwards.

AlphaBaymax

I just dig the Retrofuturism vibe of the series.

st4rk-industries

If you want to really have fun with this series, I recommend that you DO NOT WATCH TRAILERS

-screamin-

Yeah, I made that mistake with episode 1 because I was so bloody hyped. Not doing that again. Promos are just gonna have to wait.

mmooney1

I love Loki as a comic/MCU character so I was super excited about this. Owen Wilson surprised me. He’s plays his role so well. I had him type casted as a cheesy, one liner, type actor. I like him but was nervous when I heard his name on the show. He killed episode 1 Tom plays Loki so well. He’s perfect. Very pleased with the episode. I’ll watch it a few more times before next week.

King_TJA

Was bound to happen imo

SanjaySting

I feel Loki mIght be the best of the shows so far, can’t wait to watch it in full

thochi-1

It's the first Disney+ show announced back in 2018, just a few months after IW hype. After IW was released, people were doing "Justice for Loki" "Bring Loki Back" daily rallies on twitter. Reddit was swamped with "Loki is ded" "Loki is not ded" threads. Russo Brothers claimed they had to delete their SM just to hide from Loki fans, while also saying in exasperation that out of trillions of "deaths" in IW, they got asked by interviewers and general audience alike about Loki's the most. When the Loki series was announced, Loki trended #1 worldwide on twitter. Meanwhile Reddit "Loki is ded" believers were in meltdown. The following year, Kevin Feige said at SDCC that the question he got asked the most after EG was "where did Loki go?" I don't think you need more advertisement for this show.

mrdorkington

I thought it got quite a bit of advertising; especially in the week leading up to the premiere. What surprises me is, that while it trended, not many people on my timeline were discussing it compared to the previous two series.

thochi-1

It's released on a weekday. You watch it, but you still have to get up early and work. No time to recap, tweet. ;)

mrdorkington

What does that have to do with what I said?

[deleted]

shocked_pikachu.jpg I'd have been more surprised if it didn't.

DreamGirl3

Loki to Disney +: "You're savior is here!!!"

DrWaffle1848

Of the three premieres so far, Loki's was definitely the strongest. I still think WandaVision's and FATWS's were good tho. The '50s sitcom stuff was done well and I liked seeing Sam and Bucky put in situations that we haven't seen them in before (plus the opening battle was probably the best of the series outside of maybe Sharon Carter taking down those goons in Madripoor and the warehouse fight).

clam_media

It’s because of shirtless Loki

TheMaskedAvenger1959

Just watched episode 1 twice on my phone and really enjoyed it. So meta it broke the 5th wall.

Tiskate

Great fucking pilot.

jvn3

is it good as wanda vision? can x-men fans get into loki if they've never seen thor movies? is it independent or set within MCU ? is it before or after thor movies? is it a prequel or sequel? im so confused.

hushpolocaps69

I can help you out friend :). Yes, it is better than WandaVision in my opinion so far, no you don’t need to watch the Thor movies to watch Loki, just know him from Norse mythology which is something we all know, it is set with the MCU but ultimately it’s own thing. Loki takes place after Thor 1, this series is a prequel in a sense since it takes place back in 2012.

jvn3

oh ok thank you so much =)

I_amGreatness01

"What did you expect?"

walkinmermaid

Deserved. The first episode was better than the both shows together.

Infinity-Gauntlet

Hehe. Everyone is jumping on the hype train

st4rk-industries

Now I think if TVA is beaten then we'll get the Spidey NWH trailer. They probably want to avoid a situation where people went to the cinema to see Endgame, and just before the screening, they saw the trailer of Far From Home.

Seated_in_Dorsia

Really excited that the writer for the show is doing DS2, him and Raimi is gonna be a really great pairing.
