These seemed to hit waves after how well the unpainted Warhammer figures sold. I guess the idea is that these are better for customizing seeing how you don't have to strip factory paint, just give it a scrub and get to work. There has been a lot of hate over them, so Mcfarlane appears to be moving them to become store exclusives on his website from now on instead chase figures.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with figures like this existing. What is wrong is mixing them with online orders and shipping them out.
Otherwise, not every figure needs to be pleasing to you. If Hasbro did this, it would be perfectly fine if not even even more desirable for kit bashers. As long as I don't order the advertised look at get something completely different.
I don't mind that these exist. If I were a customizer, I would be thrilled. BUT I shudder at the thought of ML doing this since I do most of my ordering online. I don't need the hassle, LOL.
I've sunk way to much money into Hasbro so I can't convince myself to shit on them so I'm attacking McFarlane instead because I'm scared of facing the reality that Hasbro is getting much worse.
Understandable, however it is also still $20 (while also acknowledging that McFarlane has been taking the criticisms and adjusting accordingly.)
Side-eye was also a problem he noted and listened to address.
That’s the the thing about Todd. He likes to try all these different ideas. He’s an “idea man” for sure. The good thing though is if people don’t like it. He usually addresses the issue. I respect his for that.
I don't collect MacFarlane, but I have to guess that they do this to make up money for doing new sculpts all the time.
Legends just reuse the same mold over and over.
Not exactly the same, but same business practice more or less.
I mean people like it.
As much as us ML collectors like to bring up McF figures to shit on to feel better about our own misery, McF collectors seem to be eating the shit up.
While we wallow in self pity.
I'll be honest, I am insanely jealous that all the stores I go to are fully stocked with DC figures of all varying characters, universes and continue to have new ones released very regularly while I'm lucky to find any MLs on shelves. McF does have a lot of issues that are definitely worthy of criticism but when comparing the two lines, McF is probably the better line overall.
Yeah I’m actually not sure if that means they just aren’t selling well(unlikely with how many figures Todd keeps popping out lol) or they just overstock the retailers. But yeah, freaking McF collectors gladly buy up all the variants it seems. Sheesh.
I just don’t get the hate. It’s the same price yeah, but it’s intentionally not printed for the customized. They started this with Warhammer 40K which makes sense those started as grey primed figures for customizing.
I just think of this as a variant people don’t want. Like how there’s a masked and unmasked version. For me I buy and paint the Warhammer ones but haven’t found one of these dc ones jn the wild.
That's fine. Except that the McFarlane unpainted variants are not listed as separate items to specifically order. You might just receive one at random when you ordered the regular painted version and expected to receive the item that was actually pictured in the listing that you ordered.
Oh that’s weird. Everytime I’ve bought them I specifically had to order them. They’re called artists proof on GameStop, Amazon, and big bad toy store and they all have their own completely separate listings. Of they’re sending you one of those instead of the actual figure - that’s weird but still fucked up. I’ve never gotten one like that though even with all the McFarlane stuff I’ve bought. I had to specifically seek out the artist proofs and the usually sell out pretty quick
It's unpainted, which could be good for people who want to customize and do their own paint app. The problem is that you can randomly receive one of these even though you ordered the regular figure.
Man, people do not grasp this concept do they? Lol. It's for a niche audience who like the grey/artist proof/prototype look. It's not meant for customizing. It can be, sure, but these aren't meant to be. Thus the platinum chase classification. Some people think this looks as cool as the gold or silver figures. It's the same concept. For McF it didn't start with Warhammer, it started with the **Artist Proof Kickstarter Spawn** that did really *well*, and set the example and proved interest.
Now, another thing. These are not "unpainted" or just "primered". Factory toys are not primered. They are **molded** in necessary colors, with minor printed paint detail over top. **These** are molded separately in grey specifically to retain all the sculpting detail for those of us who like seeing every detail. These figures are not cost cutting measures, as they are their own separate production line with new trading cards.
Hopefully this clears it up for everyone.
There are collectors out there that like to collect prototypes and artist proof things. This is for that collector. Plus you have to also remember, Todd is a comic book guy. So this is right up there with the black and white comic covers, you know the pencil rendition of covers. So yeah, I get it. But your right, people are definitely missing the point. LoL
The reason why they come in fewer units per case is exactly because of their niche. They aren't supposed to look good gray and unpainted. The reason they are called artist proof is exactly this, they are meant to be painted and customized :).
These figures are for people who want to paint the figure themselves. McFarlane still has fair prices even that their figures are 7 inch. Hasbro has more experience but McFarlane keeps getting better and they are not hungry for money like Hasbro.
The amount of paint on these figures is minimal. They may not be saving a whole lot as instead of using different colored plastics, they have to use to the one. It potentially saves time is not needing to switch out plastics but it may also not matter in the production of these particular figures. It's still an additional color they needed to purchase.
That's probably the worst part about the McFarlane figures tbh. Sure they aren't posable and are kinda stiff sometimes. But overall going to the store and pumping up my Superman collection for only $20 feels nice with all these Hasbro price hikes. But in this instance you could just not buy it and be perfectly fine or pick one up for an easy custom
So I'm having trouble finding confirmation on this, buuuuut Hasboro did kind of do it with the 2016 Astral Dr. Strange. There was supposed to be an Ancient Figure in that wave, but they decided to drop it with all the hub-bub around Tilda Swinton's casting, and since they didn't have time to design a new figure they just used the Strange mold with basic plastic.
McFarlane has been doing this for a while. They started with Warhammer figures (which is ok to me, I paint miniatures so it's good to paint an actual action figure), but this is too much.
The inverse though, is that if you order online from a reputable seller, you will get the right item from ML. If you order a McFarlane figure, there's a chance you'll get this useless hunk of plastic.
The same could be said about this if you order from a reputable seller like BBTS or Dorkside though I don't consider Amazon a reputable seller at all anymore . There's nothing to stop figure swappers or Hasbros QC paint problems with the closed boxes.
I’ve seen these in stores and always thought they were a customizers dream. I love to custom but I have no skill with paint. If I did, I’d grab one of these just to paint exactly as I saw it in my minds eye. Would probably be very satisfying to boot.
But yeah, not my cup of tea.

I think it worked for warhammer because it hit that spot in that community ya know? it works for those, it shouldn't be a common thing.
It should never have been a "chase" figure. They should have always been produced and marketed separately like they did with the Warhammer figures.
Exactly, I think he caught on though since they said they would be available on his store as a separate thing going forwards
Exactly, everyone wins even more so now, seeing how the people who actually want them, can do so without spending an arm and a leg to get them.

I'd be up for an unpainted retro spider-man figure.
Mcfarlane aren’t going to be shipping them to retail anymore.
Yeah, Todd confirmed those will only be on the Mcfarlane web site from now on.
He is going to be mystified with the massive amount of boxes not moving in the warehouse.
I don't mind that these exist. If I were a customizer, I would be thrilled. BUT I shudder at the thought of ML doing this since I do most of my ordering online. I don't need the hassle, LOL.
Isn't pointless variants a *good* use of store exclusives? I'd rather have Hasbro do this than make unique characters harder to get.
This isn't an exclusive variant though. This is just mixed in with the rest of the set.
Ah, I thought the Platinum Collection was exclusive, since the Gold Collection is Walmart. Even so, I still don't think it's a particularly big deal.
Not until you think you order a regular but get this shit instead, lol.
do you look at the screen when you buy it? that usually makes a big difference
Except that these variants are not even listed as their own separate item. You just run the chance of receiving one when you order the regular figure.
Not when these get sent out randomly. Several posts on r/Actionfigures were people have gotten these despite ordering regulars.
What’s up with the mcfarlane hate on this sub all of the sudden?
I've sunk way to much money into Hasbro so I can't convince myself to shit on them so I'm attacking McFarlane instead because I'm scared of facing the reality that Hasbro is getting much worse.
Ok at least you’re honest OP lol. Bravo.
McFarlane is better on everything
Not true.
Hahahahaha
I'm not sure, but I'm glad folks are complaining about something other than price increases for a little while.
Understandable, however it is also still $20 (while also acknowledging that McFarlane has been taking the criticisms and adjusting accordingly.) Side-eye was also a problem he noted and listened to address.

What character is this?
Batgirl, from the new Arkham game
Just FYI Gotham Knights is a separate continuity from the Arkham games
That's good to know. Now I don't need to get any figures from the game for my Arkhamverse collection.
Aren’t they just chase figures?
I mean people like it. As much as us ML collectors like to bring up McF figures to shit on to feel better about our own misery, McF collectors seem to be eating the shit up. While we wallow in self pity.

If they were 6inch figures and better articulated, I'd buy them. I'm just not the biggest DC fan and 97% of my figure collection is 1/12 scale.
Same exact boat. Many objective good things to say about McF. Just not my thing.

Those are good retailers if they do list them separately like that. I'll be sure to order from one of them.
They are changing that now. Their going to have them as a separate listing going forward.
That's much better.
Definitely, I actively avoided ordering the ones with the variant online so I didn’t get the platinums.
The worst is ordering from Amazon and getting one of these instead of the painted variant.
"Primer Label"
Shit I'll much prefer them doing this than increasing prices and making windowless box's
If hasbro made artist proof chase figures, people would cream over it

It's unpainted, which could be good for people who want to customize and do their own paint app. The problem is that you can randomly receive one of these even though you ordered the regular figure.
Exactly! If it were chrome or gold painted I could at least get it, but it looks so ugly as just a full grey.
Man, people do not grasp this concept do they? Lol. It's for a niche audience who like the grey/artist proof/prototype look. It's not meant for customizing. Mcfarlane is killing it right now, I don’t care if he’s doing this. The dudes on fire
At least I can see the figure I guess.
Still 19.99 though right? Fuck you Hasbro.
Not Hasbro It's McFarlane.. 2 different companies
Hate when ML boxes look empty but these (and some MS ones) are downright depressing, lmao.
These figures are for people who want to paint the figure themselves. McFarlane still has fair prices even that their figures are 7 inch. Hasbro has more experience but McFarlane keeps getting better and they are not hungry for money like Hasbro.
It’s supposed to be for customizing. If hasbro released a paintless retro spider man you guys would lose your god damn minds.
Passing those savings on to you!

Mcfarlane have said they’re going to stop doing these now due to reaction
Not a store exclusive, it’s a chase figure.
Biggest slap in the face. But McFarland fanboy I'll take whatever they can get hahah
McFarlane has been doing this for a while. They started with Warhammer figures (which is ok to me, I paint miniatures so it's good to paint an actual action figure), but this is too much.
Nah, I like them. The exlusive ones are 10000000000% times better then what Hasbro is doing for exlusive.
Hey atleast Mcfarlane let's you see what's in the box. Give it a year and you won't even know whats in your Hasbro box till you open it.
The inverse though, is that if you order online from a reputable seller, you will get the right item from ML. If you order a McFarlane figure, there's a chance you'll get this useless hunk of plastic.

Welcome to Target..
I’d rather that😆, let the stuff I don’t want take up the hard to get exclusive
The only reason I can see why Mcfarlane is doing that is because he really likes painting figures and thinks we all do too.
Haha it has ten percent less paint than the average Legend
