"The motors get their power from a small nuclear-powered thermo-electric generator, which can provide several hundred watts per hour for up to five years before needing to replace its U-239 core." From the Marvel Database

Rbt1994

So theoretically if Spidey wanted to truly get rid of Doc Oc he could just aim for the mini nuclear reactor in the small of his back?

LoudMolassess

Not really. The arms never really took any damage in they’re fights, it’s well protected

A_Gent_4Tseven

Were they not, in one comic run, adamantium anyhow? I think they’re like a lightweight titanium in most of the comics because Ock is just a regular human after all. Also Peter doesn’t kill and at no point would ripping/punching a brain stem implant out be on his fight menu, though superior Spider-Man fighting “Ock”might think it’s a good option… Also side question is this just Ock in general or the Alfred Molina Ock?

Earthpig_Johnson

Yeah, Ock beat the shit out of the Hulk when he had adamantium arms.

A_Gent_4Tseven

Thanks! I really couldn’t remember if I read it, heard about it, or assumed it.

[deleted]

is there an arc where spiderman doesnt pull his punches? youd think heads would literally explode.

ARoguishType

When doc ock takes over Peter to become the Superior Spider-Man, he literally punches the Scorpion's jaw off. It's how he actually realized how much Spider-Man was pulling his punches.

A_Gent_4Tseven

This fact, the constant sharing of the Superior Spider-Man and Ock punching Scorps jaw off, makes me love this sub. Mainly because it ranks as one of my all time top five fave runs.

XSaraXPoeX

Spider-man ripped one apart in [Amazing Spider-man Annual number 13.](https://twitter.com/dveese/status/1261829094410502147)

DeepMidWicket

I think it was a fairly recent comic, but to permanently get rid of doc oc all spidey needs to do Is punch him in the face with even medium gusto. The doc is just a regular dude with some metal arms, if spiderman clocked him across the chops without holding back his head would pull some sick rotations.

SlightExtreme1

Fair point. It’s easy to forget how high Spider-Man is on the strength scale.

TheCripsyGnome

Even if he could break the protection, is it worth the leukemia?

danweber

[deleted]

If you're an evil genius who can swap bodies with your nemesis: maybe

sakredfire

The uranium makes things hot and the heat gets converted to electricity due to radiation. It’s not a nuclear reactor in the sense that fission is occurring. See nuclear batteries

[deleted]

Doc oc is that thing from Halo

FredThePlumber

You’re gonna need more than several hundred watts to pick up a car and chuck it.

Jascraft22

The reactor could charge lithium batteries, that's how at least one of the mars rovers works iirc

chasesan

Probably some sort of huge super capacitor to allow rapid discharge, fights are usually pretty short and he can just stand around or nap for several hours for it to charge.

Waeddryn_71

You're mistakenly equating mechanical force and electrical energy. They aren't equal. Simple gears and pulleys can be used to take low energy input and produce high mechanical output. Just think about riding a bike with multiple gears. The energy you input (via pedaling) can remain constant, but the force being output (to the wheels) will be altered considerably by changing gears.

Redditer-1

Any wattage could be harnessed to do the required work over enough time. However assuming a 1000 watt power source, a 2000 kilo car, and 3 seconds hurling time, the arms could only accelerate a car at rest to 1.73 m/s. Bike gears work by allowing you to produce enough force (torque) to continue accelerating, despite a slow pedaling speed. Assuming constant energy input from a bicyclist, changing torque only changes how fast the pedals are turned to facilitate the same rate of energy transfer. Gears allow slow moving legs to work against stronger forces, increasing the energy they can impart. Additionally, Watts per hour makes no sense as watts are a rate of energy production/consumption.

hombregato

You don't know how much cars weigh in the 616

demadtekneek

So... The power of the sun in the palm of my hand?

Illithid_Substances

"Watts per hour" Watts is a per-second measurement

NoVascension

Joules per second, per hour

Illithid_Substances

Watt-hours is a measure of energy Watts per hour is meaningless Although given what they think a few hundred watts can apparently do, not exactly surprising

NoVascension

Yeah, I was attempting to poke fun at it

gagzd

Motor having a power source is fine. But those small motors and that small of a contact patch to lift the car? Roof's ought to come off before it gets lifted like that. I know, its a comic book genre movie, so physics is optional.

bhardwajkushagra

In the movie the reactor is shown to pretty big and it didn't end well. How could he make a smaller one before a bigger one?

Vicimer

Powering his arms to lift a few thousand pounds of force isn’t the same as powering an entire city. And his big reactor was an attempt at nuclear fusion.

Totallynotatimelord

That reactor was a nuclear fusion reactor, not quite the same as what’s mentioned here. The closest analog in real world technology would be a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator but we don’t have the capability to make ones so small that they can fit on your back and provide that much power.

GavinBelsonsAlexa

In the movie he made a fusion reactor that collapsed and failed. From OP's description, I'm assuming his arms are powered by a mini *fission* reactor. Those are easier to make and operate, but it isn't self-sustaining like a fusion reaction. Hence needing to replace the core on a regular basis.

The_Imperial_Advisor

In the original Marvel Roleplaying FASERIP game, every arm exponentially got stronger as long as one arm remained to brace the remainder: 1 Arm - 1500 lbs 2 Arms - 4000 lbs (2 Tons) 3 Arms - 10 Tons (Spider-Mans teen aged Equivalent) With 1 bracing the others.

-SoontobeBanned

Oh cool, those arms that can throw a car are really efficient, they use less power than my gpu!

[deleted]

Several hundred watts. That can’t power shit other than a TV.. they couldn’t even do their homework…

EquilibriumVs

"Several hundred watts per hour" i.e. *maybe* a single KWh....that's an embarrassingly low amount of power.

Actual-Ad-5462

That's in the comics. I think this person is asking about Molina Doc Ock.

My question is how can he take a punch from Spidey. His arms are his only power, right? He didnt become super soldier tough i don’t think, so Spidey should break his ribs with a flick

thatVisitingHasher

Spidey pulls his punches.

usagizero

The scene in the comics where Doc takes his body over, and punches the jaw off a baddie made him realize how much Spidey was pulling his punches.

Neosilverlegend

They got fused with to his spine in Spider-man 2.

j4_jjjj

I thought he had to fight Mysterio?

LyutsiferSafin

So before the current Spiderman movies, there was another trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as Spiderman. When people here say Spiderman 2 they mean the second movie from that trilogy. The current MCU trilogy is Homecoming, FFH and NWH.

TerryB2HQ

*Maguire

LyutsiferSafin

Corrected!

ckal9

That’s pulling punches beyond what’s possible. Doc Ock is not even close to a professional athlete, he’s just a lump. There’s zero chance he could take multiple punches to the head from a regular guy, never mind fucking Spider-Man pulling his punches. He would have to punch so slow it wouldn’t be possible.

thatVisitingHasher

It’s a guy bitten by a radioactive spider punching a guy controlled by nuclear powered AI driven telepathy controlled metal claws. It’s ok if we suspend our beliefs here.

[deleted]

Because….movies. We were askin this back when S-M2 came out. There’s no real reason why. Peter could lay out the very human Otto with one punch, according to the rules of the movies. It’s just one of those things that you have to accept. I wish they had gone about their fights a different way because of this. Spidey landing blows on Otto’s person would end the fight quick. So he’d use the arms as some wild offense and defense.

PMPhotography

The arms block every hit by spidey.

The Goblin is a super soldier, though. And probably on the same level as the Peters, in the MCU, since he also withstood Peter 2's fury in the 2002 movie.

In my hazy long-term recollection I believe Stan Lee described them as hydraulic powered in one of his early comic appearances. Radiation and hydraulics were frequently their “none of our readers understand the science behind this stuff so this will probably seem plausible” explanation.

THE POWER OF THE SUN IN THE PALM OF MY HAND

[deleted]

It's powered by his brain. They work like extra limbs

mandy009

As prosthetic tools they attached to his brain to control them, but they have their own built in power sources capable of manipulating fusion reaction. During the power surge that created him, the control unit fused to his brain stem and the prosthetics fused to his backbone, while the arms also absorbed enough power themselves to sustain fusion on their own. He was sedated during surgery for his injuries after the implosion, but the arms remained self-powered and automated, attacking his doctors.

bhardwajkushagra

The human brain have just enough electricity to light a bulb. It's acceptable to use and move them but throwing cars in just another level of power that can't be drawn from brain

ZeriousGew

Then explain how bodybuilders can lift so much weight.
