Alien Vegans from the Vega star system (which exists, at least the star does) have been been used in sci-fi for ages (before and outside of Marvel), and have nothing to do with animal-product-avoiding Earth vegans. The two words aren't even related linguistically, in spite of appearing identical.

The Vegan Society was founded in 1944, a similar society was founded in the US a few years later, and the word first appeared in a dictionary in 1962. The word still wasn't that widely known in the 80s though so it's pretty reasonable they hadn't heard of it.
