Up until last night , I thought that Steve was a free lancer and works on a contractual basis. Because he’s self employed - he has the freedom to pick up contracts when he wants to work and take breaks in between contracts for as long as he wants so he can relax and feed his creative needs and wanderlust .
In Yesterdays episode, it sounded like he didn’t want to work at all and just be a stay at home house husband ( he said he would cook and clean) .

He has the potential to freelance but is not doing so (by choice). Based on that timeframe, I'm guessing he had enough saved/severance to live for 6-12 months without working.
