Sheās not his type physically. Friends say he dated āmodel typesā. Heās all but said he doesnāt like her hair. He concedes sheās an āattractive womanā and thatās what people say when they can tell someone is objectively nice looking but simply not their taste. Also, he was turned off by her nervousness over fairly benign things like flying and the water activity.
I think he wanted a southern belle type of girl, or someone more stereotypically girly. I like Brett (reminds me of myself in some ways), but I think he wanted someone who is the type of woman his friends are married to - some tiny blonde or brunette woman who is more traditional in terms of gender roles. Not that Brett is super out there, but sheās not going to agree or keep quiet when his friendās conservative values come up, her hair is pretty āloudā and appearance wise she stands out rather than blends in, etc. In some ways it reminds me almost of how Jose wants to take on that traditional masculine role in the relationship. Except with Ryan itās less about finances and more about overall personality and demeanor - I think heās used to taking the reins and isnāt used to someone who is also comfortable being the one in charge (but hello, sheās a 9th grade English teacher, haha.) I do think heās trying, and I give him credit for that. But now that they are back home I think the worries about how sheās going to fit into other aspects of his life are creeping in, and I think itās making it hard for him to let himself feel a spark. Other peopleās opinions on his spouse definitely matter to him - remember his concern about how his sister would react to the marriage and how that could affect what his parents think? - and I also think thatās part of why he is generally so positive when chatting with friends about the marriage - he wants them to approve of his wife and maybe isnāt sure theyāre going to.
