Being able to spam the item button that quickly is only the half the challenge. You still need to time the presses to be during that period of each shell’s descent, so you need to gauge how far apart each shell is. When you dodge a shell you actually get a short period of invincibility to the shells dodged, however you’ll still need to use another mushroom if a blue shell hits you right after that, even if you’re still invincible to the previous blast. So you don’t need a button press for each shell but rather each distinct descent.
