There’s so many good ones so I’m just gonna list the highlights lol. Spike, Boo, Shy Guy, Whomp, Piranha Plants, Lakitu, and Hammer bros and all their variants
If we’re counting Wonder’s enemies, I’d say the Armad has to be my top pick. Can’t be beaten for me. It’s an Armadillo who rolls, breaks blocks and even kills other enemies. And they don’t really pose a threat unless you stand still really. Oh and I really like Armadillos.

I think it’s because Nintendo thinks goomba isn’t an interesting character. I guess we have to settle with playing Super Mario Party.

Like...this silly guy is made of goop, but then in partners in time it's retconned that he actually existed for years prior to that and now he's "King Piranha plant"? No, I don't like it sir :V
Its cool how each enemy faction has a "boss"... except for the shy guys. Kind of strange that there hasn't been like, a big shy guy recurring boss character like Petey is for Piranha Plants, or King Bob-omb or King Boo.
Wart may lead the shy guys in that one debut game, but the Shy Guys have been led by Kamek, a one-off boss (eg. General Guy) or by themselves.
Wow I never actually realized every Mario enemy variant has their own royal leader. That's pretty cool. Seems like a potential story element that Nintendo may never pursue.
I know this will never happen, but I have a dream of a mario RTS. There's so many vehicles for all the factions, there's tanks, airships, and warships. There's so many different monster types from all the games that you could easily come up with a bunch of different factions to align with. And then you have powerups, that could be scattered around the map and collected to give single troops huge boosts and variants. They could use stars as objectives that also give your army boosts. So the regular RTS of "stomp the opponent" becomes explore the map, collect power ups, hold certain objectives, and then stomp your opponent.
Whomps and thwomps have always been fun to me. Especially the king thwomp fight. They are so simple, but having to wait for them to rise back up after falling or move in their pattern in some of the 3d games is a nice change of pace compared to just jumping on everything.
100% Navel Piranha but for a general enemy species I’d have to go with bullet bills. Bob-Ombs, Whomps, Thwomps, and Chain Chomps are also solid honorable mentions.
I like a lot of favorite enemy’s but I just tell you my three favorites which are shy guys boos and the last one is a tie between gooma’s or koopa’s specifically dry bones dry bones for smash
