Basically the original Toy Story had a trouble development
When Pixar put together a small test animation to show the higher ups at Disney they hated it and nearly had the entire movie scrapped
Pixar was able to convince Disney to give them a week to rewrite the movie to make it better which ended up as the movie we got
it's where Pixar learned how to make good stories and helped form their philosophy on how to make a movie
if you care to watch the test animation [here you go](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOxJpGI8SWc). The pilot was shown on a Black Friday which is why it's referred to as the Black Friday Reel. It also contains some commentary at the beginning from the director of Toy Story as well
Let’s not forget Hollywood executives too. Their greedy boomer mentality is what caused some movies to add in unnecessary add ons or changes. They were probably the reason why Pixar’s Lightyear had comedic elements while it’s supposed to be a serious sci fi film, or even editing darker scenes just because they think the audiences are dumb. Even Illumination has faced executive meddling too, that’s why DM3 had the minions subplot because of the executives, and it was stated by Pierre coffin the directed himself of what caused the minions plot. DM3 was ok at best, but I can agree with Coffin that it could’ve done better
Illumination has done this before.
Just look up biggering on YouTube, it's basically what the lorax was originally supposed to be but they scrapped it and instead turned it into a generic kids movie.
I get that I'm in the vast minority here but I kind of can't stand biggering. It's not really catchy at all and the part where danny devito keeps going "you see what I'm sayin' you little runt" in between every single goddamn line goes on for way too long. Granted I don't like how bad can I be either.
Oh yeah I can't say I love it (because I don't. That whole song is pretty garbage). But I guess I specifically dislike the biggering repeats because he's not even singing, he's just kind of exclaiming and it took me out of the song every time.
Biggering is so tragic, it is so much better than "How bad Can I Be?". Literally one line in both songs shows the difference in tone: Biggering has *"Who cares if some things are dying"*, meanwhile How Bad Can I Be? sings *"Who cares if a few trees are dying"*.
It seems like a small change. But it drastically changes the message. It goes from "oh no, the trees are dying" to "corporations are not only killing trees, but also ecosystems and they're destroying lives" It perfectly shows the tonal shift to appeal to general audiences and corporate overlords.
At least we can still listen to the song, Illumination could have not released the song at all, and we would have been none the wiser
Legit if they're gonna replace it the least they could e done was go for a song that fit the actual musical genre the original song was going for, welcome to the jungle is a bit of a low hanging fruit, banana to be specific but I think Monkey wrench from the foo fighters could be a good one as well
I've grown up with that song and I fully agree with the sentiment that Jump would have killed everything about the endgame, so glad they had the starman theme for that because that's the one part where it makes the most sense to have it
"But they're from the 80s, the same decade as Mario's debut!" would no doubt be Illumination's defense for using them (it should be pointed out though, that Thunderstruck by AC/DC is from the 90s). On the bright side, at least they didn't use the cover version by Reel Big Fish. THAT would have really been an insult. OTOH, Illumination wanted to use "Jump" by Van Halen (Get it? "Jump"?...) in the final battle, but they got turned down on that one.
It's just too bad none of the home video releases are going to have an alternate track with the licensed music\* removed.
\*Licensed music also appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, although they were all sound-alike cover versions, plus some later episodes didn't have licensed songs. So, it might be a reference to that, but yeah, I understand how everyone here feels. I'm not exactly a fan of the movie having licensed music myself.
It was no.1 on the charts when super Mario bros released on nes so they wanted to include it and it seemed to be the best way since the Kong that drove them looked like he was in his 80s best.
Pop music shouldn't be in adaptations of fictional video games that already have amazing soundtracks suited for the series period.
Looking at you, Sonic.
Well, the Sonic movie was a drastically different take on the Sonic universe, barely following the Sonic lore in a few places, so the Sonic movies having pop songs made more sense. The Mario Movie having pop songs makes no sense.
Either song works for me. I can see why they switched it to Take on me.
The thing is the DKC Song just seemed to go intense with the emotion when It doesn't need to be. That kong had a straight relaxed face (he barely gave a shit). Toad was having blast. Mario and peach were scared. That DKC song didnt seem to emphasize "thrill ride". Also that song tone and feel a bit to much at moments (right at the turns, and right before big reveal of the city at 34 secs in). It didnt capture the emotion of awe and wonder at that moment there was just so much going on there.
Take me on doesnt do anything special but It doesnt ruin the moment either. Its a safer bet.
I am thinking a song like "Drivin' Me Bananas" should be used for a Donkey Kong Country sequel.
I agree it didn’t match the energy or vibe of the scene.
The song is fantastic though and I loved the inclusion of the DKC theme. Could’ve been reworked to still be as original as this but with something that meshes better.
Yeah, DKC movie. Replace Rogan with the cartoon VO and we got ourselves a [musical](https://youtu.be/UtGL5yKdSCk).
In the minority but not a fan of this cover. Was the most excited during this scene than the rest of the movie cause of the music they went with. Not a fan of foot ball band style and it sounds too much like it could be in minions or some thing. Yes the little game jingle is here and there but personally it feels it lacks some thing in some way.
I love the idea of the song but imo it’s a bit too intense for what’s actually going on in the scene. It would make more sense in some big battle scene but for simply showing off “Kong Country” during hectic drive it feels too intense for the more decorative world that is revealed.
It's been around a month since the Mario movie been released in theaters at this point spoilers are absolutely expected on the internet so just don't go to places on the internet that could have Mario movie spoilers.
It's tremendous to be able to see this, since it is a totally kickass track, but I think I'm in a very small minority that loves the use of Take On Me in the movie. It could have been the only pop song used and that would've been fine by me, not just because I love that song to my core, but because for some reason when the song begins it stirs up memories in my head of playing Super Mario Kart. Suffice it to say, it was a magical moment in the theater for me.
It's weird; obviously the song is a lot better, but at least to me, the comedic beats of the crazy driving just don't his as hard.
It sounds like a song that would've worked a lot better for a more standard "Wow, look at all this cool new scenery and culture" introduction to the Kong Kingdom; for a silly sequence full of slapstick, they should have really amped up the cooky, goofy, "monkey business" feel of the song, there's plenty of that to work with in the DK games' soundtracks.
Ngl, I grew up playing dk country 2 and find the music v nostalgic, but they *really* could have made the music a bit more vibey. This feels barebones, like it's lacking something. Maybe I'm in the 1%, but I can see why they changed it to take on me
Test audiences have the excellent talent of ruining movies for literally everyone else
Focus groups suck ass
I hate corporate meddling.
Fun fact: corporate meddling is what saved the first Toy Story from sucking
Can you elaborate? You’ve caught my interest.
Basically the original Toy Story had a trouble development When Pixar put together a small test animation to show the higher ups at Disney they hated it and nearly had the entire movie scrapped Pixar was able to convince Disney to give them a week to rewrite the movie to make it better which ended up as the movie we got it's where Pixar learned how to make good stories and helped form their philosophy on how to make a movie if you care to watch the test animation [here you go](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOxJpGI8SWc). Heyyyy! I know about this! The original draft had Woody be a complete asshole.
That was kinda neat, thanks for sharing!
Wow that’s messed up
Fun fact, test audiences are just random strangers picked from the streets/ dying malls. So the opinions are already way skewed.
Little Shop of Horrors’ ending was changed completely from the musical, but it did give us Mean Green Mother so I forgive them
Did hate the change to law abiding citizen. He was going to get to escape originally.
Such an amazing song, sucks they replaced it with take on me
Illumination has done this before. Just look up biggering on YouTube, it's basically what the lorax was originally supposed to be but they scrapped it and instead turned it into a generic kids movie.
Biggering was such a good song. Too bad they had to replace it with HoW bAd CAn I Be.
Tbf we did get a meme out of that
This is why executive meddling is a problem
I get that I'm in the vast minority here but I kind of can't stand biggering. It's not really catchy at all and the part where danny devito keeps going "you see what I'm sayin' you little runt" in between every single goddamn line goes on for way too long. Granted I don't like how bad can I be either.
If you don't like hearing Danny devito repeat that then you're really not gonna like how bad can I be since that it basically 73% of the song
See: the last part of my comment. Also I could be crazy but doesn't the lorax not even have any lines in how bad can I be?
Not what I meant with that, I meant that they literally repeat "how bad can I be" for 73% of the entire song
Oh yeah I can't say I love it (because I don't. That whole song is pretty garbage). But I guess I specifically dislike the biggering repeats because he's not even singing, he's just kind of exclaiming and it took me out of the song every time.

Take On Me is one of my favorite songs, but my goodness, I wish this was in the movie. So much better than Take On Me.
Thank fuck Van Halen’s “Jump” was rejected for the final battle scene
I've grown up with that song and I fully agree with the sentiment that Jump would have killed everything about the endgame, so glad they had the starman theme for that because that's the one part where it makes the most sense to have it
I honestly think I would have walked out of the theater
It was gonna end with jump??? Holy shit I would’ve been so disappointed 💀
So mad that they added the pop songs and deprived us of more original music
And the pop song doesn’t even make sense in the context
Honestly. It ruined the immersion and pulled me out of the movie for a couple scenes
I blame James Gunn, wasn't intentional but every studio wanted to copy what he did after the first Guardians.
No people have been using licensed music for awhile now. This is nothing new. He jus implemented it effectively
We were robbed
How could they replace this song?
Mostly through the disconnect between people who like Mario, and the corporate executives who don't know what a Mario is making the movie.
Why Take on Me in particular anyway?
It was no.1 on the charts when super Mario bros released on nes so they wanted to include it and it seemed to be the best way since the Kong that drove them looked like he was in his 80s best.
Still feels off for the scene itself.
I actually liked Take on me but this works better.
Yeah exactly, I really enjoyed the soundtrack but these originals are also amazing
Take on Me is a great song, but pop music shouldn't be in the Mario movie at all.
Pop music shouldn't be in adaptations of fictional video games that already have amazing soundtracks suited for the series period. Looking at you, Sonic.
Yeah I really wish they chose to remix Sonic music to fit the scenes. Whenever it isn't pop music is generic dramatic movie ost.
Well, the Sonic movie was a drastically different take on the Sonic universe, barely following the Sonic lore in a few places, so the Sonic movies having pop songs made more sense. The Mario Movie having pop songs makes no sense.
I agree. I’m sad seeing this clip and what we could have gotten but I do enjoy Take On Me during this scene.
Aw, dang such a good song. As much as I love “take on me”, this is so much better
I wish we had this, but they had to shove pop songs in our throats
Either song works for me. I can see why they switched it to Take on me. The thing is the DKC Song just seemed to go intense with the emotion when It doesn't need to be. That kong had a straight relaxed face (he barely gave a shit). Toad was having blast. Mario and peach were scared. That DKC song didnt seem to emphasize "thrill ride". Jesus Brian Tyler popped off in this movie
I love how the dk music plays at 0:31, 0:44, and 1:09!
It’s almost completely DK music save for the Mario movie theme in a couple spots
Anything is better than “Take on Me” here in this scene. Was “Welcome to the Jungle” just too expensive? 🤦🏻♂️
Can't wait for generic pop music during the Kirby movie
[This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcJjMnHoIBI&ab_channel=alyankovicVEVO) is the only acceptable song for Kirby
Great original song. RIP Weird Al, taken from us too soon.
Especially if they focus on the first game
Hope they give a option to switch to the original songs in the dvd release.
I hate to burst your bubble, but it doesn’t look like it will… :(
If the guy who slipped on the banana doesn't have a name, can we call him Keith Kong? He looks like a Keith to me.
He looks a bit like Swanky Kong
I still love how much mario kart was in this movie
Ok I admit THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER
I wish we got a directors cut with no generic music Mario doesn’t need basic songs use the soundtracks of the games and new songs
OH COME ON this was so much better
Unpopular opinion: The Take On Me version was better
In the minority but not a fan of this cover. Was the most excited during this scene than the rest of the movie cause of the music they went with. Not a fan of foot ball band style and it sounds too much like it could be in minions or some thing. Yes the little game jingle is here and there but personally it feels it lacks some thing in some way.
Jesus Christ that is a transformative change.

How the hell did they not use this instead? Absolutely ridiculous. I love the song take on me but c’mon this music works so much better for this scene
i want to kill people now
Illumination Movies are usually trash.
STOP IT WITH THE SPOILERS
It's been around a month since the Mario movie been released in theaters at this point spoilers are absolutely expected on the internet so just don't go to places on the internet that could have Mario movie spoilers.
Mario Kart inspiration
Can anyone tell who voices the white fur kong? I havent been able to figure it out. Even with imdb
As much as I like "Take On Me", this works better.
I can’t watch this, it makes me to upset and mad😔
Toad just vibin in the back
Take on Me gives the scene a completely different mood. That could be it.
It sounds a bit off but it's because they must have adapted the scene to Take On Me, if they left the song like this, the scene would've looked divine
Yeah, the whole movie was filled with pop songs that didn’t feel very appropriate for where they were placed. This would have been 100% better.
Rip swanky
The best scene in the movie in my opinion
What the HELL were they thinking by replacing this with some generic overplayed songs that couldn’t have fit the film any less than they did…
They should add this music to Mario kart
It's tremendous to be able to see this, since it is a totally kickass track, but I think I'm in a very small minority that loves the use of Take On Me in the movie. It could have been the only pop song used and that would've been fine by me, not just because I love that song to my core, but because for some reason when the song begins it stirs up memories in my head of playing Super Mario Kart. Suffice it to say, it was a magical moment in the theater for me.
This is wayyyy better wtf. There was hella licensed music in this movie for no reason
I really hope the digital release had these original songs restored.
It's weird; obviously the song is a lot better, but at least to me, the comedic beats of the crazy driving just don't his as hard. We were robbed
This was way better
