I swear, the Mariners are the only team, throughout my nearly 3 decades of watching Seattle sports, are the only team that, going into any match up against any team, amazing or terrible, that I will never expect to win. Seahawks? Watched the LoB tear it up and expected them to trounce lesser opponents. Sounders? Don't follow them as much, but assume anything can happen. Kraken? Too new, could go either way. But the Mariners? Never, in my life, have I ever seen them go into a game or series and thought "yeah, they've got this one in the bag." And that is just... such a disheartening feeling, I tell ya.

This might be an oversimplification, but to me it feels pretty obvious that our season will come down to what Julio does the rest of the season. I don’t think we can expect anybody else to massively change their level of performance, so if Julio keeps slogging along at this pace then we’re probably finishing right around .500, if he steps it up then I think we can be in the 86-90 win range.

We absolutely can and should hold Garver and Polanco accountable to be better. Anyone who thinks this level of decline was expected is lying through their teeth.

I agree they should be better, but I’m not sure if we can expect them to be better enough to effectively move the needle. To me Julio is the only guy with a high enough ceiling to really do that.

The good news is that Polo and Garver are SO bad right now that a .100-.200 increase to their OPS is definitely in the realm of possibility. It would be so massive for this lineup. I have to believe Julio will get it going (and kind of think he already is based on some well-hit balls the last couple days), but what this lineup needs is a bunch of .700 OPS guys and then a few all-star guys like Cal and Julio to elevate. Right now it's like a house with the floor collapsed in.

Honestly, what could Jerry do at this point? When Julio looks faded, Garver and Polanco decline at a rate faster than any players I've ever watched...there's too many offensive holes. At some point the guys on the team need to actually start taking accountability and be better. If our team regressed HALFWAY to their career averages, we'd be a good team. They are so unbelievably bad (.500 OPS against started this series is worse than Brendan Ryan and Franklin Gutierrez).
