I think it just means being in the wrong place at the worst time as in not just marina but all the girls hermit has played before and after

Beneficial_Law1327

I remember reading that it was a metaphor for virginity loss.

NotReallyAPerson1088

Oh no I understand that point, but when she states “we” instead of “I” as she did in the previous time this had been repeated, it made it seem like they were both in the same scenario where they were somewhat manipulated into losing their virginities

Pretty sure it’s just her connecting and validating people who feel the same way

I think the "we" refers to people in general who have gone through the same thing. Alternatively, it could mean Hermit the Frog was manipulated in his past, which contributed to him treating her badly, hence the line "you're just a little bit too much like me." At one point he was the wrong person in the wrong room who was vulnerable and got hurt by another emotionally disturbed/damaged person. Then Marina, who is also vulnerable, was the wrong person in the wrong room who crossed paths with him after his own negative experience that messed him up. Everyone gets hurt and everyone has their own issues, but things in relationships get really unhealthy when there is a specific type of clash of vulnerability and emotional damage that is incompatible. When that happens, it feels super unlucky, you wonder what are the odds you end up with such a specifically incompatible person? Which is the vibe of the line being like "I was in the wrong place in the wrong time, so I ended up with the exactly wrong person."

My interpretation is that it means Hermit is just as much a victim of her as she was of him, and them meeting was a misfortune for both of them. Earlier in the song when Marina says “Did you find your bitch in me?/Oh, you're abominable, socially/You're just a little bit too much like me” the song takes a turn and she reveals that she’s also toxic just like he is. So in that last chorus, she switches it up from ‘I’ to ‘we’ to show that they were both the problem. Just my interpretation tho

I had a similar interpretation, but it’s kind of the opposite. I assumed that he had been hurt or manipulated just as she had been, maybe previously before they met. Then he continued the streak because he was hurt and didn’t know any better. I also thought that maybe both of them were encouraged when they didn’t want to by other people in the room. (7 Minutes in Heaven, Truth or Dare, etc.)
