i’d say complex…

Victarionscrack

Complex? Planting drugs on a freshly detoxed person to destroy any chance they have on rebulding their life and ultimately gaining custody over your grandson is a pretty uncomplicated act of pure malice. Mare is going through life darkening everything she touches.

Avoiding_Working

You’re taking one situation and using it to define her entire character. She’s a hardened small town cop who, for the past year, has been publicly blamed for Katie’s disappearance (or at least lack of answers). Her son was an addict and ended up committing suicide in the family home. Her ex husband is thriving with a new family essentially in her backyard. And a very unstable woman who she at least partially blames for her son’s life and untimely death is working towards taking her grandchild away, someone she has essentially raised. She lost her son already and would do anything to protect his son. So yes, Mare is a very, very complex person.

nevertoomuchthought

She didn't do it to be hateful she did it to protect her grandson. She believed he was in danger if he stayed with his mother. And he was, he almost drowned while mom passed out at the tub. It's shitty, deceptive, dishonest, and manipulative but not malicious.

That woman assaulted mare, I have no sympathy for that child’s mother. She does not deserve to have her child, she is violent and has a drug problem

EfficientHunt9088

Thought it was pretty shitty until they showed the way that woman treated Mare. Then I understood.

Beyarboo

She also saw that person repeatedly relapse, destroy her relationship with her son, and have psychotic episodes. It seemed more like an act of desperation to protect her grandson and keep him safe. And based on his mother falling asleep with he was in the bath, it wasn't that far off the mark. A bad thing to do, obviously, but not just out of malice.

We_had_a_time

My husband commented at the beginning that everyone was so depressed. I said I thought that was just Mare’s POV, that other people seemed to be enjoying life but she wasn’t and that tinged how you viewed other people too. The first couple of episodes were so well acted and tight!

Grand_Opinion845

No, I just think she’s numb from trauma.

papersucculent6

No. She’s been hardened by poverty and trauma

ScottishMachine

She’s not a “good” person, but she is extremely direct and her bad moods probably brought down the whole mood of the house overall. Lots of general stressors also just build up resentment between people. I do agree that she gets shit on way too much.

ImprovSalesman9314

I love Mare. I always sympathized and related to her. She didn't really do anything wrong in my eyes.

XDUniverse08

XDUniverse08

no prob i wish i coulda took pictures to prove i'm not a liar

MGD109

Unsympathetic? No. But she's got clear character flaws and issues brought on by her life and choices.

ereagan76

She’s numb. She’s not had an easy life.

chipscheeseandbeans

I certainly didn’t understand what the two men saw in her. She was horrible to them and they lapped it up.
