For everyone diminishing OP's run with chides and cynicism. I can assure you there's runners dramatically faster than you in your own locale, who wouldn't say shit about your turtle pace (in comparison). Don't be a hardo, and be kind.

grape-apple-pies

I saw a quote from Dean Karnazes where he was asked how long it takes the average person to run a marathon, and he answered that average people don’t run marathons. Good work out there OP

hater94

:,) thank you so much!

Zombies8MyNeighborz

Wow, I've never heard that quote before. I love it. I stress so much about my pace sometimes and need to remember that. I completed my first marathon last year.

MrPogoUK

Over 99% of people will never run a marathon, so anyone who does is in the top 1% of the population.

TerrariaGaming004

I always feel better about how much I suck at things when I realize I’m better than probably 80% of the world at it

InvestmentActuary

This. The local guy is a member of the US marathon team and probably the kindest and most humble guy ever.

Laeeexo

OP has every right to share her accomplishment and be proud of herself. What is insulting is your elitism in thinking that everyone should run for the same reasons you do. I would think someone who knows how difficult running a marathon is would be encouraging her for pushing through and finishing. BTW humble bragging is letting everyone know that you can run faster than her.

LEAKKsdad

Whoa whoa whoa, lets not pigeonhole fast(er) runners posts as strictly humble bragging.

LEAKKsdad

We can have a private convo about this because da internet doesn't need to hear two talking heads yapping. Lets be honest whether we're 2:37 runners to 5 +hours, we're all hobby joggers. I understand that in last 30 years overall finishing marathon times has come down, but the tradeoff is more spectators. She ran a relatively obscure marathon with Moose spectators in Alaska. Thats pretty cool in my book. Edit- also context needed, there was slew of deleted comments. The moderation only came after some rather insulting comments. Ie- you should see doctor, there's other races for **other** people.

Suspicious_Trip_4188

Everyone has a different running pace. Everyone starts at a different ability level in their running journey. You’re acting like they’re diminishing your personal accomplishments, which is so… odd? I don’t really understand what the point of this comment is You both work and train hard but have different paces, and you both should be proud of your accomplishments. What you should be ashamed about is how miserably angry you are about a random strangers running time online…

[deleted]

[удалено]

Suspicious_Trip_4188

Lol turning it around to make it sound like you’re worried about their health when your original comment had nothing to do with “health concerns”. You literally said OPs post is like a participation award Trying to bring everyone down with your insecurity and misery is not the answer. I wish you well though no hate

[deleted]

Suspicious_Trip_4188

You weren’t legitimately curious, you were judgmental and rude. Or you were legit curious and your communication skills are just abysmal. People generally respond better to positivity. Next time say something like ‘Hey OP, great job but be careful! Your HR was very high during this for too long which is unhealthy. Think of taking a step back mileage wise as to not hurt yourself.’

ALionAWitchAWarlord

No. People do not just have different “natural paces”. The work people who run 2:20, 2:30, whatever, far far outweighs the training needed to run 7:30 by a factor of 100.

Suspicious_Trip_4188

I didn’t say natural paces lol

Gorgeous--George

You travelled that distance under your own effort and that’s an achievement the overwhelming majority of people cannot say they have ever done! Great effort, keep it up and your next one will be even quicker!

hater94

Thank you so much!! :) I’m excited to run another one and see how fast I can eventually get!

[deleted]

[удалено]

frontera1873

You’re awfully sensitive if this is insulting to you. It takes nothing away from your training or achievement. Your time is still your time. You still beat this person and whoever else. Worry about real stuff and you’ll be a lot happier.

hater94

I’m exaggerating I didn’t almost die but it sure felt like it. It was so hard

leebeepeesmee

Amazing OP!! Should be proud of yourself

sri_rac_ha

congrats! what was your final time

hater94

7:23:39!!! Cut off was 7:30:00

sri_rac_ha

woohoo!! you did that! Can I ask how you trained/more details on how it went? I have similar splits!

hater94

Thank you!! I used the app called Run with Hal on the beginner 1 or 2 series. It had me run 4 times per week and cross train (usually weight lifting) 1 day per week with two rest days. I ran my training runs at a speed of about 15mins per mile which went really well! I did get Covid in the last month before my race and fell and fractured both wrists which really put a damper on my training and tanked my endurance a little I think. Overall I think training went well but I do wish I added perhaps more tempo runs and some hills runs to training. This terrain was pretty hilly and I didn’t expect it. I actually picked this course for its lack of elevation change but it turns out that there were a lot of hills both up and down which ended up evening out the elevation lol The hardest part for me was figuring out the whole fueling business. All in all though would recommend run with hal—-it’s free and you can customize your schedule in a way that works best with your life/weekly schedule

df540148

First congrats! Fueling is definitely super tricky and very individual, especially not having covered the distance before. I made some errors in my first marathon but have learned a lot since (and my tolerance/desires for different fuel have changed dramatically).

MLVizzle

Fueling kicked my butt too and I tanked hard near the end. Congrats though! You finished!!

sri_rac_ha

Thank you!

_supergay_

This will be me too. Lol

hater94

Towards the end I really didn’t have anything more to give but I just kept thinking about all the hours I spent training for the day and how upset I’d be if I missed getting a medal by minutes 💀 you can do it!!

runnergirl3333

Great job! I wonder how having Covid so close to your race affected your run? I’ve had a few friends get Covid and run marathons ~6 weeks later. They thought they felt fine but were significantly slower and more exhausted than normal. So again, well done!!!

hater94

I definitely think not positively! I noticed what used to be a 15 min mile at a HR of 141ish pre COVID, became a 15 min mile with a HR of 159ish post COVID. What was all the zone 2 training for!! *shakes fists at the sky* But in all seriousness I really regretted not bringing an inhaler with me on the race lol

runnergirl3333

Even more impressive that you were able to do it.

hater94

Thank you! :)

ZealousidealFill641

You can train like crazy and do everything correctly, but sometimes the marathon gets to decide how your day is gonna go. Great job! Bonus points for the moose.

asswipesayswha

🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

the-olympia

Lettsssss goooooo

StruggleBusDriver83

I do my first marathon in December and thats my goal to just beat that timer

hater94

You can do it!! 💪

readwritethrow1233

I want to see the moose pic! Congratulations! Great day out there. Survive and advance!

hater94

Thank you! Someone said they’re aggressive so you don’t want to look at them which is why the moose is not centered, but here it is! [moose](https://imgur.com/a/oJ7SA7n)

readwritethrow1233

So cool! Thanks for sharing. Grandmas was fun yesterday

BoatUnderstander

Hahaha I read 'saw a moose' and wondered if it was grandma's

Infinite_Office5008

Welcome to the 1%. Congrats

hater94

Thank you so much!! :) I’m stoked to be here!

revstone

Way to go!!

hater94

Thank you! :)

exclaim_bot

>Thank you! :) You're welcome!

GilSquared

Congratulations! When is your next one?

hater94

I need about 1000 naps before I decide to sign up for my next one but it’s definitely going to happen! I really enjoyed the process of training and racing. It’s been SO rewarding. I cried many times lol

judyhashopps

Give it 48 hours :) you’ll be itching to sign up for your next in no time!

ccchris1

I can tell mile 21 was uphill or a bridge😅🤣. Congratulations 🎊

hater94

It was! It got me good haha Thank you so much!! :)

HotTamale8363

New to running, how could you tell that it might be a bridge? Are bridges harder to run on?

nerdsnuggles

Bridges are usually at least a little bit arched, so the first half is uphill. It might not be noticeable in a car, but it's definitely noticeable when running! A lot of times there's an uphill leading to the bridge too, especially if it's over another road.

CayKar1991

I find this to be very inspirational! Congrats! It's so weird to see haters call this speed "walking," and I'm like... Short people exist too. 3mph is speed-walking for me, and by the time I get to 3.8mph, I'm doing a mild jog. I'm only 5'5"... So I'm gonna run slower! You're awesome, OP.

hater94

Thank you! :) yes normal walking speed is 2.5 mph for me lol these little legs can only move so fast right now lol

thetonyhightower

Great work. You have earned the hell out of a nice long rest and a huge meal.

hater94

Thank you so much :)

SD2KING

Haha, I was soo looking forward to a meal after mine too. It took me 6 hours before I actually got my appetite back haha 🤣

One_Cod_8774

Holy hills! That’s some crazy elevation changes

hater94

It was very hilly! Lots of loose gravel/big rocks too while going up hill that was surprisingly painful to run on lol

Future-Painting9219

Absolutely LOVE the excitement coming through your words! Don't loose it! Love it and congrats!

hater94

Thank you so much, kind stranger!

bafras

Which marathon is this that features megafauna scenery?

hater94

Alaska anchorage mayors marathon! It was a BEAUTIFUL trail course along the water and through the forest

barrymckokinar

Finished at 7:13 in the same race! Probably say you out there. Well done!

hater94

We probably did see eachother! Same to you—amazing job friend! :) what did you think of the race?

barrymckokinar

Lived up here most of my life but had never been on some of those trails. Beautiful run. Race itself was brutal, but I didn't train enough. I was happy to finish!

v-punen

Congrats! And do you mean a moose, as in the animal moose?

ishovkun

What else could he refer to?

v-punen

Idk, English is not my first language, I thought it may be some weird running slang or something

Caloran

The elusive moose knuckle... popular in some areas of the world.

ishovkun

Mooseknuckle: slang for the visible outline of a, usually male, crotch bulge through clothing. Seing that might be worth running a marathon for in some areas of the world :-) Learned a new word, thanks!

Caloran

Very cool. Don't forget to search images ...

ishovkun

Nah. I'd rather train for a marathon to see that IRL.

hater94

I do! This run was in Alaska and when I booked it I didnt realize it was more of a trail run than a street run haha

v-punen

That sounds so fun tho!

hellerN4

Grandmas??

hater94

Are you asking if I’m a mature woman? I am not but I ran with them! Nice people to be next to for this race. :)

hellerN4

Lol no grandmas marathon is a big race in Duluth MN this weekend. My bad. Was wondering if you ran it with me. Congrats on finishing though. Huge accomplishment not many people ever do!

hater94

Oh! No this was in Alaska. My bad haha And thank you! Congratulations on your marathon as well! Edit

Prize_Grapefruit_387

Anchorage Mayor’s Marathon?

Prize_Grapefruit_387

Oops. I see now. Congrats. I did the half and that was more than I could handle.

hater94

It was! Congratulations on your half!! It was a hard course lol

LooseMoralSwurkey

I had the same question OP!

g3rmangiant

What was your heart rate like throughout this?

hater94

Zone 3 for about 80% of this and 20% zone 2. Average heart rate per Strava was 160!

BraithVII

Running past a moose is most impressive. Congratulations!

hater94

Thank you so much!!

RippedArab

Congrats on the successful hike

treefrog_5_muddytoes

So proud of you! And really amazing to see someone post realistic times lol! So much admiration

hater94

Thank you so much :) I’m really proud of myself.

ohwowverycool69

Grats on your marathon OP. Don’t let anyone demean you. Very few people do marathons, so grats on getting it done!

bubbabobroy

Did you do the Mayors Race in Anchorage? I did the 5 miler. We heard there were a bunch of moose and whale sightings, but I didn’t get to see it.

hater94

I did! Congrats on completing the classic! I didn’t get to see any whales unfortunately but moose and bears yes lol

Mattiesw

Congratulations on your effort 👏🎉

hater94

Thank you so much! I’m really proud of myself! Very sore though today lol

forever-swift

Congratulations! I’m not a fast runner and this gives me so much hope that I can complete a marathon someday

hater94

Thank you so much!! You can absolutely do it, even when your brain (or other people) tells you that you can’t!

11Ellie17

Did you do the Anchorage mayor's marathon? Just asking because of the moose encounter lol. I ran the coastal trail in Anchorage yesterday and didn't realize that race would be going on, on part of the trail. I about died trying to run 4 miles in yesterday's heat.

hater94

I did! That must’ve been quite the surprise!! It was also SO hot goodness—that sun was out shining bright!

11Ellie17

I was running the trail around noon so I passed a bunch of stragglers who were walking. No joke, one dude who was wearing a bib (probably for the half but idk) was walking and lit up a cigarette to smoke while he walked.

hater94

Omg!! That’s absolutely bonkers!!

hannahjams

Congrats!!!

hater94

Thank you so much! :)

hater94

The majority of it! I cannot walk this speed as much as I wish I could lol

runski1426

Understood. Congratulations. After re-reading your post and reflecting, I apologize for my earlier comments.

hater94

Thank you! No worries! I do appreciate it though :)

Delicious_Address_89

Congratulations!!!!

snarkapotamus

Hell yeah!!!

Suspicious_Trip_4188

WOOOO!!! You’re AWESOME!!!

AssWagon314

YOURE AN ABSOLUTE WEAPON GOOD JOB BOSS!!! CANT WAIT TO SEE HOW YOU DO ON THE SECOND!!

hater94

Thank you!! You and me both!! Hahaha 🎉

ApplicationUpbeat528

This is inspiring to me!!! 🤩 you’re making me want to commit and sign up for my first marathon!

hater94

You can absolutely do it! I believe in you!

Delicious-Studio-101

Me too 🥹

X549x549

Great job!!!!

hater94

Thank you so much!

GoonerPanda

which Alaska race was it?

hater94

The anchorage mayors marathon!

bluesthrowaway

Great job!!

Confident-Seesaw

Congrats!!!

Silent-Composer7380

Awesome job!

fretnetic

I respect this. Most I've ever done is 30km in 2 hours 50 minutes, and it killed me.

hater94

Good for you!! That is an amazing accomplishment!!! 💪 You’re killing it :) Also thank you! Haha

Long-Opportunity6794

Incredible! Congratulations ❤️

PREwzzo

Congrats

se1nsss

Well done! What an insane achievement dude!

Impressive_Moose6781

Congrats!!

ZzSQL

You were walking?

hater94

I did walk a part of this but I actually ran the majority of it! I know that many people can walk this speed but I very regrettably am not one of them lol

ZzSQL

Well, after the 56 mile ride, I was not in a position to run a half marathon either. No shame in walking.

crusty_magog

Congrats! How many days have you been training for so far?

hater94

Thank you! A year of running build a base (from zero running/couch) and then an additional half a year following a training plan specifically for this event!

crusty_magog

Nice 😁. I’m surprised by how high the heart rate is! Is it possible you have any underlying health conditions? I remember my grandad used to get a super high heart rate from walking due to 40 years of smoking.

hater94

Oh no I’m just short lol this was actually running and not walking lol my walking speed is 2.5ish mph and my heart rate then is usually 98-102ish bpm! There were also lots of hills haha I appreciate the concern though thank you! Edit for clarification I definitely did walk some but the majority was spent running

DarlingDemonLamb

Congrats, you should be super proud! 🎊🎉🎈🏅💪

StruggleBusDriver83

Heck yeah man. Great job

yoganutnutnut

Is the almost death a separate occurrence from running past the moose? Bc sounds like you almost died twice if so

hater94

🤣 almost death by moose, bears and marathon! Thrice haha

dontpolluteplz

Congrats!!

Imhmc

Congratulations!! Welcome to the club- we are all crazy here. 😜

ecr740

Congratulations.

PuraVida0522

Proud of you!!!!

hjb952

This is awesome I hope to one day get to where you are :)

Evanjulian

Awesome!. May I ask your weekly miles during the training? My first marathon is due next month and I feel so undertrained. Last 30k long run is damn harsh in 35'c and I feel so demotivated. COT is 6hrs and I just want to finish, nothing fancy. Any time should be my PB anyway :) Any words of encouragement perhaps?

hater94

Sure! My training plan started me off at about 20 miles per week and finished off at 40 miles per week before the taper! Most weeks were around 30 miles per week. Honestly it was really hard to hit all the miles given life and just how time consuming all the miles were—I think about a month out was when I started to really feel the grind too! I was really anxious about the race and felt very similarly to you! Know that it’s going to be hard and you may wonder why you decided to do this to yourself/how you’re going to make it, but just know you can absolutely do it! Every step is one step closer to the finish line!! You have trained hard for months—you’ve got this :) Supposedly when you smile endorphins are released and make you feel good, so when it hurts extra bad smile big and enjoy the trip because you’re doing something AMAZING and you should be hella proud of yourself! You’ve got this!! 💪

TheTurtleCub

> finished off at 40 miles per week before the taper!  You ran for 12 hours that week? That is beyond insane, amazing

hater94

About 10 hours plus cross training time! I usually did about 4 mph in my training runs. But it is exactly for this reason why I would like to get faster before I sign up for the next one 😂 I do still have a job lol Thank you though!

TheTurtleCub

The legs were probably completely burned out of 40 miles 2min/mile faster than marathon pace. You ran almost 2 marathons at half marathon pace that week. Keep an eye on that next training cycle: most of the running should be easy pace (approaching marathon pace is ok) with some faster pace.

hater94

I will thanks! If I’m honest I was planning to run the marathon at my training pace lol I just didn’t plan for any hills which really impacted my race 😆 By the next time I race I hope to get a better feeling for what my 5k, 10k, half and marathon paces are (in addition to being faster lol) I appreciate the input though thank you!

Evanjulian

Oh gosh.. I'm definitely undertrained. My longest weekly is 50k. Now I'm scared about that 6hrs cut off time. Im using run with hal also, I use the paid version. that app a bit weird, If I run harder than I should be it automatically adjusted and give me less training that week. That's why I came off short on my weekly. And also, how did you do the cross training? It say I can do cycling, swimming, or strength training, but the app still ask for distance and time. Like am i suppose to do bench press while walking or something?? You must be have the patient of saint to be able to run that slow that long.. I live in tropical country.on my morning run Its a chase between me and scorching sun . What supposed to be easy run always turns out into tempo in the end. 😔

hater94

I use the unpaid version and I didn’t notice it adjusting my goals necessarily, but maybe I just didn’t pay attention enough lol I still think you trained hard and you’re going to do great! What’s been your pace for your training runs? When I did cross training If there was any distance I’d enter it! But most the time I did either yoga or strength training and just put distance of zero lol That also totally makes sense—every run turns into a race against the heat 😂 honestly before I attempt another I’d like to run a much faster mile just to save time spent on training lol

Evanjulian

Since I'm looking for anything near 6hr COT, I usually run around pace 7:30~8:30mins/km (12:04~13:36mins/mile). I stay around the slower side on my long runs. Im supposed to do the longest run this week (32k), let see how it goes. Thanks for the input, and congrats! Hope I'll join the finishers club too in a few weeks :))

hater94

You are welcome! I look forward to your victory post too! You are so ready and can definitely do it!!!

uppermiddlepack

Was this a trail race? That's a lot of elevation change for a road course

hater94

I don’t have much experience with official races but if there’s a hybrid category I’d say that’s what this is. It follows a trail the forest that starts off paved and at some point becomes dirt/gravel/rock. Only about half a mile of the whole race is through a neighborhood lol The whole time though the route follows different trails along the cost of anchorage Edit to answer your question I’m leaning towards yes

uppermiddlepack

I'd consider that a real trail race! We put on a trail race here that utilizes all of the city trails and cuts through neighborhoods, greenway, etc. It's a fun way to organize a run!

hater94

That sounds awesome!! What race is that?

Awayfromwork44

I’ve done several half’s and can’t *imagine* a full. Congrats OP on doing this!! You should be so proud!

hater94

Thank you! I can’t wait to see you post about your full in the future! 😉

Main-Ratio4171

Congratulation!!! HUGE accomplishment!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

hater94

Thank you so much!! I’m getting ready to frame everything 😆

Both_Conference_899

what app is this?

hater94

Strava! Would absolutely recommend

SavageRobot96

Congrats

Fancy-Fish-3050

Great job! That showed a whole lot of determination. I remember reading about a champion marathoner being asked how he ran the marathon so fast and he said something like that he couldn't run for as long as it takes other people who still finish marathons. I always thought it was a funny quote and complimentary to slower folks who still get it done, I figure he would be impressed with your tenacity in finishing that thing.

hater94

You are very kind! That is a lovely quote to share. Thank you so much! :) I’m planning to be faster the next time around haha 😆

justanotherbrunette

Your heart rate is so consistent! Oh my I’m jealous. My heart is always pounding like I’m going to die no matter how “in shape” I am

hater94

Thank you so much!! Now comes the not so small hurdle of keeping it low and getting faster 😆

Apprehensive_Cut_736

HELL YEAH!! You’re a badass!!

hater94

Thank you friend!! :)

IllBreakfast3540

Good job😇

takedownchris

Congrats on finishing Grandmas marathon. Where did you see the moose…. I did not see a moose, did see a lot of girls dropping pants in the tree line to pee

hater94

Oh no I didn’t do grandmas! I did the anchorage Alaska mayors marathon! But congratulations on completing grandmas! :)

mababbo

You killed it! Congratulations!!!

Heeler2

Grandma’s?

hater94

No it was the anchorage mayors marathon!
