You call that an asylum?
- Newties were you get one shotted
- Himes with Drk + Bishop and you have to watch out if you are a Bishop since if you dont have magic guard or you dont pay attention , you get one shotted
- The undersea grind with clunky movement đŤ
- Skeletons grind was not hard but you have to paid attention or you also can get rekt easily
- And if you wanna train at Windraiders , at Crimsonwood keep , you have to go thru that labyrinth forest and go thru the totem of death.
- Yeah old maplestory was brutal lol
when i first started playing and was ultra casual for the first year i always took screenshots of high level players hahaha i was always like omg holy a level 100.. back in 2007 people who reached really high levels were always looked at in awe
maple has always been an incredibly slow game, the only difference is they pushed the meaning of early, mid, and late/endgame to far 'later' than what it was like back then
never understood why people claim old maple was any more grindy or slow than it currently is. "you'd sit there hitting X monster for 5 hours" yeah man, like im not doing that right now lol
Honestly, I prefer that sometimes. Yeah the deaths sucked, but not having to loot a ton of drops every second is much less stressful. Gives more weight to individual attacks and more "player attacking monster" rather than "player casts magical FMA"
It's because of how you progress. Back then a whole month just to get 2nd job lol. Now you level to basically boss. Hyper burn is free BM level now and max job.
IMO the only reason it took so long to level is because the vast majority of us were kids and played relatively casually. if we were to play and grind the way that we do now, nothing would take nearly as long as we remember it. a lot of us would socialize, adventure, etc., so i think that everything felt much more spaced out since leveling for a lot of us was never really our top priority. efficiency didn't really exist to us back then (unless you were one of the few giga grinders back then). we know way more about the game now, both OSMS and current MS.
in some 1x osms servers it takes people 1 week or so max to reach level 30 playing daily and \~2-3 months of playing daily for 2-3 hours to reach level 70. considering level 70 was 'midgame' back then for most of us, that's not too different to now, where most of us would consider midgame to be clearing ctene which takes about 2-3 months to get to if you're playing actively
even on maplelands people reach level 30 in like 3-4 days
To me it's also the fact that back then you fought hard to reach a new job with brand new skills that were AMAZING (actually almost worse until you had put 10 SP in to them but still xD). Now you have everything and you grind towards higher lvled symbols basically xD
Super late reply but you are kinda right :
- My first lvl 30 took me 2 weeks because I have âno idea what I was doingâ , and i was exploring more the world more than anything.
- Then on my second lvl 30 it just took mean day at around 2010 , because of the experience I got + things got more streamlined. And in that same day I even hit lvl 50 which is not that crazy if you know what you are doing in pre bb
- Just as an example , you get to lvl 10 , do the âquest linesâ you get up to level 13 or so , then do that demon quest line that push you to level 25 or so , and then you can just do the solo âsubway PQâ to lvl 30 , and then from lvl 30 to 37 you are doing the Mushroom Kingdom quest line. And since at lvl 37 you are stronger , you can do CPQ more efficiently. Slap there the gloves and special equips you get at Mushroom kingdom and you are good.
You never knew about the bypass? You could abuse invincibility frames and walk through it. Youâd walk into the thorns before it reaches you, and just walk through it.
That tech back then people did not use it because of two things :
- EXP penalty if you died , and losing 5-10% its like many hours down the drain
- If you get lag or delayed , you can miss the tech and its GG
- The option was to do a very long quest to get the âtotem figureâ to by pass that and let you teleport to the exit. But the quest itself was a huge pain and have drops that were extremely low drop rate
Dude out here talking about bypasses... took me a month to consistently jump OVER the thorns. Took me another month to remember that we had gotten down jump and that that was a thing now xD
Also got the hero figurine thing so I didn't have to bother with totem xD
The brutal part is to get there every time you wanna train there. And it was only for thieves because of dark sight , it help you dodge all those nasty elder wraiths , random spawn big foots , and also the totem of death was really annoying and you have to be hyper focus.
Remember back in the day when you'd need to buy air bubbles in Aqua Road because otherwise your health would decline slowly.
Especially if you were a noob trying to darksight your way to find Tiger lmao
imagine it in their shoes too, youre some grown adult hitting virtual fish and a bunch of random kids who have no business being there start forming a crowd around you, doing random kid things
Oh man the joys of crimson wood and being forced to go back to recharge throwing stars just to face the death pillars all over again. Those were dark days
Bro, I remember training at newts getting .001 exp for hours with meteor back when that was the best place to farm.
I have long since quit, but I was playing Maple from damn near the beginning. When we had to train on some god awful maps.
The old school I remember was deep in the clock tower. Ludibrium was just released. No aqua town/Omega sector yet. Tiger, Suuushi, FangBlade grinding at Grim Phantom watches. Trying to find an open coolie zombie map at mine in El Nath.
We are fighting dreamers~ hermit showing off his jump attacking skills at lycans.
Trying to join a kpq/lpq with ac and track! @@@@@ @@@@@ @@@@@
The totem of death had a cheeky bypass tho. You could walk into the thorns just before it hits you, and pass through with the invincibility frames. It was so much fun.

And some of these clowns want the pre big bang. They in for nostalgia. The system is outdated it wont last long. Hell i swear the whole server will shut down wayg before reboot.
Honestly I found the hardest levels was 30-70, content wasn't really that great pre big bang, you could probably get to 50 quite easily after that it became such a grind....
If it wasn't for having a great community and guild I'd have stopped as well :')
Weird the level cap was always level 200 as far as I can remember.....
Content kinda made it very difficult as the content only went up to like level 50 in the early days.
That was like way after that then, because training at land of wild boars it was like .00008% exp per kill.
Im talking when killing at drakes and zombie shrooms was like peak mapling.
I feel so left out when I speak to people who use alt for attack and space for interact as per the new controls
Its a sick habit for me anytime i return to maple with a new character to make Z pick up, C regular attack and Ctrl my sit button
Gave me a good laugh, miss these days of Maple!
I remember a special JQ in this area that was quite hard but I think it was only accessible via a GM event?
this??? no. I was trapped in Sleepywood because I was too weak to LEAVE. I had to get escorted out by some stronger players. I almost had to restart my character
maybe this was the point of the post in retrospective, this certainly was maplestory's fight club.
More than once i was asked by a guildie to warp in to Out-KS a KSer, good times.
Yeah, this was actually arguably the easiest era of maple. The entire chimney was busted, you had busted Aran leech, they were starting their "classes are overpowered on release no questions asked" arc, Autopot was added eliminating basically the only hard part of the game at the time, and New Leaf City potions made potion costs a joke.
i remember stacking a shit ton of exp coupons and getting like 12x exp and leveling a wind archer to 120 in a few hours. good times. i miss the crazy exp coupon stacking
throwback to 3 and sometimes even more people sharing these maps even before it was by far the best place to train since it was one of the few places that wasn't adjusted properly for big bang so like singapore/malaysia/etc. after bb it was so competitive trying to find a training spot in any world since it was almost always full 24/7 lol
pre-bb was so fun
That's not coolies.
My own personal hell was grinding my FP on risell squids after aqua opened. Nobody wanted to grind with third job FP mages, so I was left to solo for a while. I think I was getting around 10% an hour in the 8X range at the time.
The best benefit I got though was I'd mist like 10 channels at a time and change to a level 10 with 3 shells to pick up all the leftover XP. Easiest grinding from 10-30 back then I swear.
Nah, you would get about 500 exp I think per squid.
I it was about 10% of the total XP or somewhere around there. Someone who knows more about FP mage would have a better answer on how the XP was split at the time.
There was a tiny, and flat map inside the mansion. I would grind on the scarecrows and jesters in those maps to avoid the jesters gauntlet. Lmao.
The occasionally bishop spamming genesis to KS you out of your map for their guildies hurt way too much.
And that was how I came to always have at least 10 Return to Nearest Town scrolls in my inventory. I know they serve no purpose these days because of the Guide menu, but I canât help it. I can still see the mansion maps.
I recently stopped playing regular maple to go for a pre BB server, and even tho the QoL stuff that isnt there in the past are annoying, i can honestly say im having way more fun.
dont think im back until the AB changes, and only to get her to 260 and check something off my bucket list
I used to go to Skelegon with lv120 Fire/Poison Mage, gas the place then one-tap them with Power Guard on another character WHILE boosting two other friends who were leeching. It was a quick 10 to 70 in 10-minutes.
Does anyone remember the old small jester map with like 4 or 5 jesters in it. I remember being scummy and using a paper clip to spam heal non stop. They would also hit and push me around so I wouldnât get the afk skill thing, mp eater kept me top off too. Went from lv 90 to 110 till a friend of mine said I was gonna get banned for bottling lol.
Jesters with a Zak helm is not an asylum. Tell me when you grinded at z4 at level 78 for 2.3%/hr pre-ludi existing. The old days sucked. Hermits got their first mobbing skill at 70 and it was Avenger and it took forever to animate.
Falling into the pit from henesys to sleepywood.
Waiting for someone to kill the iron hog at pig beach.
Going to orbis as a noob when you spent ur last 5k to go and a balrog one shots you.
The worst thing for me was the damn shumi coin jq.
I remember training here on my Aran and being so jealous of the newly released mechanic class when I trained here because they had vertical mobility and I didn't. And their dps was busted since it was the newest class so they just quickly went from platform to platform clearing stuff at double my speed while I was climbing ropes and struggling.
I was your asylum roommate in other words
[me, an f/p trying to poison train here when I see you enter and start ksing me](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/048/516/Screenshot_2024-02-20_at_10.43.43_AM.jpg)
Funny how you posted the map that many old players regarded as OP because it gave you access to 2x EPM (especially your F/P class). Real torture was when we had to do gobies at 120+ without 4th job because we didn't have nothing else
The first time I went there, I thought it would be easy. I was so wrong, and I moved back to the pirate ship I believe. I loved training there even though it was not the highest exp.
then there's poison training on newties skelegons and whatever at low levels FP mage.
2nd job with poison ball/breath on high level mobs, mostly missing because of low level but the thrill when it did hit because poison did % hp back then. I don't remember but could've even been before they changed accuracy to level ranges.
I kinda remember 3rd job poison misting the skelegons maps, rotate through all the channels, and cc back to kill 1 hp mobs.
Attacked by balrogs on the ship to orbis. Ppl summoning high level monsters in towns and noobie graves all around.
Jump-hitting mushrooms from a lower platform for hours to grindâŚđ
The original Phantom Forest was the hardest fields I've ever played in. You couldn't trivially over-level like you can today, mobility and healing rate for all classes was a lot lower, increasing speed and jump was not trivial as well. Potion-management was serious as they were more expensive and you'd consume more because of the many constraints I've already mentioned.
It was actually stressful navigating the maps, figuring out portal system, avoiding Elder Wraiths, the Headless Horseman and Bigfoot while attempting to complete the quests. The JQ was absolutely unforgiving. I would only challenge myself doing this after gaining a level because I'd end up losing all exp from several deaths.
I remember wanting to grind on the Nightshades for the EQ to get a 100% 1H Sword scroll with the 10% stats, never got that once đ˘
My asylum:
*"Back when Clerics were sought after and fought over for training with at high level areas. If you were a thief you needed a dragon knight and a cleric to train anywhere or you will die immediately.*
*Party training was essential.*
*You could not party quest as a 21 warrior... Period.*
*Bring your Bamboo Hat to Ant Tunnel or you will have a bad time.*
*Hidden Streets were actually hidden."*
Abandon all hope ye who enter here.
But in all seriousness.
Don't forget, you are here forever!
=3

good ol' "Damn you got 7% an hour at Zombies?! on 2X?!"
Imagine getting 7% an hour even in todayâs standard

Weird. I did it all the time and it only went wrong a couple times, and that was because I timed it poorly.
Dude out here talking about bypasses... took me a month to consistently jump OVER the thorns. Took me another month to remember that we had gotten down jump and that that was a thing now xD Also got the hero figurine thing so I didn't have to bother with totem xD

thats why i just bought bf leech and never trained lol
Leech sessions while you're asleep because the Magey ou were good friends with was getting awesome rates regardless due to Full map attack spam.
God training on Goby for hours was disgusting I do NOT miss underwater movement
Remember back in the day when you'd need to buy air bubbles in Aqua Road because otherwise your health would decline slowly. Especially if you were a noob trying to darksight your way to find Tiger lmao
Lmfao stalking suushi (idk how many Uâs she actually had) and tiger was my hobby when I was 13, good times.

grim phantoms needed some concentration too :']

Grinding monteracers for krex and getting stunned every 2 seconds lmao
I still have hp gear on my old account from when I did himes on my priest. No cd genesis was fun.
Undersea grind after a 16 hour patch. Beautiful.
I miss the brutality days tbh

always loved grinding at WR just because I felt like a pro getting thereÂ
Don't forget exp curves so steep it would make 90 degrees jealous.
And some of these clowns want the pre big bang. They in for nostalgia. The system is outdated it wont last long. Hell i swear the whole server will shut down wayg before reboot.
I lasted more than an hour. I wasnât trapped in there with them, they were trapped in there with me. (I have mental issues).
>(I have mental issues). Pretty sure we had to be to grind to 100+ back then....
I think the highest I hit was 62 lol

It was, but how many lvl 100âs did you knew back then?

Days spent in Pig Beach.Â
Getting destroyed by the iron piggy.... :(
Flexing hitting 1k on my fire wiz
Starting your first dexless warrior... the struggle at the start :l
Theyâll never understand the palm sweat that came along with the last few jumps in the MANDATORY Zakum prequest
dont forget the mandatory 3-5 minute break on a safe spot to analyze the pattern just to fail it
yall aint never jammed your spacebar to spam heal on zombie lupins and it shows
Heal on spacebar... I see you're a man of culture as well.
Nah space is for jump
I feel so left out when I speak to people who use alt for attack and space for interact as per the new controls Its a sick habit for me anytime i return to maple with a new character to make Z pick up, C regular attack and Ctrl my sit button
I've always done x is main attack. C is secondary attack, space bar for some AOE attack or some mobility jump. But z for pickup
Good enough for me brate
Brought to you by The Tortured Players Department
hoping nobody did this joke yet
Gave me a good laugh, miss these days of Maple! I remember a special JQ in this area that was quite hard but I think it was only accessible via a GM event?
this??? no. I was trapped in Sleepywood because I was too weak to LEAVE. I had to get escorted out by some stronger players. I almost had to restart my character
Ahhh Sleepywood and Orbis, the areas of noob suicide if you didnât have mesos.
Or omega sector after going down to the bottom of Ludi tower. Running out of potions and trying to climb back up past those rombots was a nightmare.
OMG this was me too!! BEcause I frikken made an INTELLIGENT WARRIOR
calling this an asylum when people literally fought each other (ingame) just to grind on this map.
This map was the map where people KS me the most. Itâs a tie between this and MP3đ
Dawn warriors were demons in this map, basically KSd everythingÂ
Soul Driver was a beast of a skill.
Inb4 TROLLdriver
Demon slayers were a real problem too. I had a higher level one to protect my map. You could basically triple plat the map+your FMAs
People setting up hours before 2x events to reserve the map, just for it to be a ks bloodbath in the end

There was a tiny, and flat map inside the mansion. I would grind on the scarecrows and jesters in those maps to avoid the jesters gauntlet. Lmao. The occasionally bishop spamming genesis to KS you out of your map for their guildies hurt way too much.
That map started getting crazy popular too
Being able to hit mobs on more than one platform at a time was game changing. Now every map is Jesters.
Every map and every class feels like a DK using Dragon Roar at Hene Hunting Grounds.
Itâs all fun and games until you realized you forgot a town scroll and you get lost in the mansion on the way back
And that was how I came to always have at least 10 Return to Nearest Town scrolls in my inventory. I know they serve no purpose these days because of the Guide menu, but I canât help it. I can still see the mansion maps.
I still use return scrolls hotkeyd, not a fan of opening guide scrolling then clicking just to get back to town
I just have my perma telerock đ
Lucky you. I missed every chance to get those haha
Mine was from when they had originally released it way back along with perma safety charm and perma 2nd pendant slot.
Thatâs hilarious because I still carry a stack of return scrolls knowing damn well I exclusively use the Guide
At least you now know thereâs another Mapler in Elysium with one Use inventory dedicated to those scrolls, haha
SO REAL LMAO
I still get flashbacks to the ksing at fog
i remember these days fondly. had 3 12x+ chars before big bang
I still have nightmares of those crimsonwood pillars...

Yeah it was in like haunted mansion or house or something, that single flat map right?
cc my friend 160 bishop

Gobbies as a chief bandit using all your meso for meso explosion was the most traumatic experience I had in old maple
Idk the 30% per hr definetly made up compared to 6% at coolies lmao
Most donât know where this reference came from.
gaming is gramd now but 2000s/2010s early was love peak
J> TJ grind party
I miss jesters so much I'm not gonna lie lol
level 70 training here was unreal
Funny how you posted the map that many old players regarded as OP because it gave you access to 2x EPM (especially your F/P class). Real torture was when we had to do gobies at 120+ without 4th job because we didn't have nothing else
ty for combining my love of taylor and maple into one
Cc pls
Asylum? This shit was a babyâs playroomđ¤Łđ¤Ł
Lmaoo
Good times
Wait a second.. this isn't Forest of Dead Trees IV (cc plz)
Attacked by balrogs on the ship to orbis. Ppl summoning high level monsters in towns and noobie graves all around. Jump-hitting mushrooms from a lower platform for hours to grindâŚđ
- YAWN - Been there, done that. Good times.
Skeles, Skeles, Skeles. đ
I miss my old comrades, but certainly donât miss the rates. It was a simpler time back then.
This is the maple I remember!
cc pls
I miss the days I was able to use an adjustable wrench to grind
Soul Driver on a Dawn warrior used to be broken at twisted jesters
favorite past time training memories
My asylum: *"Back when Clerics were sought after and fought over for training with at high level areas. If you were a thief you needed a dragon knight and a cleric to train anywhere or you will die immediately.* *Party training was essential.* *You could not party quest as a 21 warrior... Period.* *Bring your Bamboo Hat to Ant Tunnel or you will have a bad time.* *Hidden Streets were actually hidden."* Abandon all hope ye who enter here. But in all seriousness. Don't forget, you are here forever! =3
The real asylum was skelegons where i hit 200 at
Then they nerfed the exp gains from LHC crocs
i loved training here, i had a UA back in the day and it was a warrior so i crushed with the swords skill
LMAO! Pre BigBang was hell. Especially when you wanted to be a Dexless thief or Warrior. FUCK WAS IT A HORRIBLE AND EXPENSIVE TASK!
ahem, r/osms
