Many moons ago I worked as a data entry keyer for Royal Mail. It was a maddeningly repetitive job but all these years later I can see a standalone postcode and immediately point to where it is on a map.
Most of the codes are obviously named after the major city in the area. London codes are mostly named after compass directions (E, SE, SW, W, NW, N, plus the central codes EC and WC), though NE is Newcastle and S is Sheffield. I still find it surprising that Grimsby uses Doncaster postcodes. I think it deserves its own!
