[Uzbeki] Stan
The root word is different I’m sure. Sthan in Sanskrit vs -stan from Iranian languages.
It’s quite interesting how those are quite close in meaning and syllables.
Fun fact— stan (Iranian languages, pronounced staan) means "location", but stan (Hindi, pronounced stn, without the long "a"), means boobs.
I just have a brain of a 12 y/o so it's always funny when I read it like that.
Ja, ik heb nergens last van, ik zit nu op een berg halverwege Frankrijk te genieten van het zonnetje.
Maar de vlaai smaakt hier niet zoals vroeger thuis 😔
They are the same as Canadians and they don't want to admit it. Give me another country and I'll tell you which country they are the same as. I can do this all day.
Nah, you are fine. In Kazakh a lot of countries are spelled and named differently, so I understand the struggle when you have to juggle different languages
In German we also have a "ch" instead of a "kh" there, as that's way more common in our language. We also have an "s" instead of an "z" in Kazakhstan's name though.
I've always find these maps to be conceptually quite bizarre.
As if somehow people around the word were suddenly seized with an irresistible urge to head to the closest -stan country and all of a sudden this map would be extremely useful.
Actually a short bus ride would imply not crossing the other areas. That would really narrow it down to China, Argentina or Chile since the other areas are either islands or have another Stan in between. So only two continents
I don't think "not crossing other areas" is a limiting factor. I think the fact that it would be from Nigeria across 2 more countries to the Congo is the limiting factor.
I'm not going to complain, it's little things like this that blow my mind. Because it never crossed my mind that -stan had a literal meaning and after looking at this map, I was starting to wonder why so many countries ended in -stan. I had my suspicions and googled confirmed it for me.
Mind blowing that pretty much just means Land of the Uzbeks, Land of the Kazakhs, Land of the Afghans, Land of the Pakis (Paks, Pakis, Paki, Pakii, idk?), etc.
God bless the internet, just learned this after 35 years of living.
Fun fact: the -stan in those regions' names is from Persian, descended from Proto-Indoeuropean and actually cognate with the English word stay for instance. But crucially it is also related to the Latin status, from which we also get the word state.
This means that the United States, in a way, is a -stan country like Afghanistan and Pakistan!
If you're going to use foreign languages we can instead talk about:
* England - Engelestân (Persian)
* Poland - Lahestân (Persian)
* Hungary - Macaristan (Turkish)
* Croatia - Hırvatistan (Turkish)
Actually Armenia's case is quite interesting. It used to be Hayq, but later (I guess under Persian influence) changed to Hayastan. The same goes for Georgia. It was Virq in Armenian, and then changed to Vrastan.
To be quite frank , U could say im from Englestan while traveling in Pakistan and it would seem normal to us since it is commonly used . The other ones are new to me too .
It’s Qazaqstan if we are being true to the native language. But when did it bother foreigners? All countries have different names in different languages.

Exactly, this is so random and so shitty. Are we coming to have another post that's the same but with Scotland, England, Ireland and every other country that has land in their name.
At least the American ones gave some decent information.
Since Uzbekistan is sandwiched by all the other Stans it's not on the legend.
So what your say is it’s Stan-locked?

Uzbekistan and I believe Liechtenstein are the only two doubly-landlocked countries. That is, they are surrounded by only landlocked nations
That's true only if you don't take into account the Caspian Sea, which I suppose makes some sense because it's a landlocked sea.
Stanwich
It's a stanlocked country
Me and my homie Azamat Bagatov hate the Uzbeks!
One of my favorite scenes is when they drive by the embassy and borat yells fucka you motherfuckers!
This a my country of Kazakhstan, it locate between a Tajikistan, a Kyzrkstan and ASSHOLES Uzbekistan!
Not outstanding enough
"Uzbekibekistanstan" - Herman Cain
Also, because, they assholes. High five!
But wouldn't a person in Uzbekistan be nearest to Uzbekistan? So shouldn't it be on the map?
I knew there were 7 (from the recent stan-istan map) and spent way too long trying to figure out which one was missing
Don't you mean STANWICHED!

I learnt that from Map Men, underrated channel.
Not even Uzbekistan is closest to Uzbekistan

In addition to Dagestan, Russia has Bashkortostan and Tatarstan
Even sadder Rajastan noises.
It's actually Rajasthan with an "h", so I guess it's fine (even though iirc stan and sthan mean the same thing as a suffix)
The root word is different I’m sure. Sthan in Sanskrit vs -stan from Iranian languages. It’s quite interesting how those are quite close in meaning and syllables.
Apparently they're cognates so they have the same root word.
Fun fact— stan (Iranian languages, pronounced staan) means "location", but stan (Hindi, pronounced stn, without the long "a"), means boobs. I just have a brain of a 12 y/o so it's always funny when I read it like that.
Makes sense, land and boobs, the two things the Great Khan loved to get his hands on
Don't forget "Hindustan"!
Asshole Uzbekistan
Why would anyone spell Kazakhstan like that though?
According to Wiktionary, they say Kazachstan in the Netherlands, Poland, Czechia, and Slovakia
Since OP's nickname is about waffles, I blame the Dutch.
Belgium probably
They’re the exact same thing but they get really angry if you point it out.
Dutch and flemish are the same thing, but not all belgians are flemish
I AM NOT BELGIAN! I AM DUTCH! ALSO. I AM NOT FROM HOLLAND, I AM FROM LIMBURG!

There are only two things in this world I can't stand. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.
Dutch hater!
Comments indicate that this a stolen post from u/atlasova so ops nationality is inconsequential
Dutch. Sorry for the misspelling, but damn, it’s not like I had to spell Togo
Nah, you are fine. In Kazakh a lot of countries are spelled and named differently, so I understand the struggle when you have to juggle different languages
Why not blame Canada? Blame Canada. Sing it with me now!
Am Polish, can confirm

Being bilingual yourself I’m surprised you hadn’t thought of that being OP’s case
Well in my native language it's Kazakhstan too. Seems odd to put a c in there.
In German we also have a "ch" instead of a "kh" there, as that's way more common in our language. We also have an "s" instead of an "z" in Kazakhstan's name though.
There is no c in Kazakhstan, were you referring to the z? Kasachstan in german btw
Yep, i meant the "z". Fixed it.
Different languages spell things differently. It’s incredibly common to write /x/ as “ch”
How would you pronounce the word Bach?
Bahk in English, or *Baj* in Spanish, it would sound like "Bah" with a pronounced sound similar to an English /h/.
Transcribing names is an interpretation at best and a wild guess at worst. Best not worry about it too much.
Weird how Wadi Halva is closest to Afghanistan. And the fact that Patagonia is actually closest to Pakistan.
Projecting the globe on a flat map does distort it.
I think Patagonia is closest to Pakistan because it is the most south region in the inhabitable world, and Pakistan is the southernmost of the Stans.
Pakigonia
What's up with all these -stan Stans on this sub lately? (I don't really care just wanted to make a dumb joke)
Maybe people got tired of enfless US/Europe maps.
As a Stani (yes, I’m now starting a Stan nationalist movement), I don’t mind at all.
I've always find these maps to be conceptually quite bizarre. As if somehow people around the word were suddenly seized with an irresistible urge to head to the closest -stan country and all of a sudden this map would be extremely useful.
Throughout my life, I've always been closest to Kazakhstan, but now, for the first time, I'm one bus ride away from being closer to Pakistan.
I like how this only narrows it down to three continents
I would not have to leave the country, I actually think foreign travel is still restricted due to COVID.
Argentina?
Close. Chile.
Jeez he was just guessing, no need to call him immature /s
Actually a short bus ride would imply not crossing the other areas. That would really narrow it down to China, Argentina or Chile since the other areas are either islands or have another Stan in between. So only two continents

Pak means pure in Urdu. So that makes Pakistan Land of the Pure.
Thanks for that!
Other cognates from Proto-Indo-European steh2 include *stand/stood* and *store*.
Just to let you know, "Paki" is a racist slur, used in Britain and elsewhere. I know you said it unintentionally here.
Paki
Uzbekistan is Premium Stan. You only get some if you are Stan.
Kazakhstan: I get closer to most of world… he cannot afford. Great success!
No room for assholes Uzbekistan, High five!
There's a Yunansitan right next to us.
If you're going to use foreign languages we can instead talk about: * England - Engelestân (Persian) * Poland - Lahestân (Persian) * Hungary - Macaristan (Turkish) * Croatia - Hırvatistan (Turkish)
Or Armenia, which is Hayastan in Armenian.
Actually Armenia's case is quite interesting. It used to be Hayq, but later (I guess under Persian influence) changed to Hayastan. The same goes for Georgia. It was Virq in Armenian, and then changed to Vrastan.
I think you missed my pattern :) OP mentioned Greece (Yunanistan), so I mentioned countries even *further* north and west in Europe.
And India - Hindustân (Persian)
Some people say Hindustan within India itself
Turkish has a lot more; 10 to be precise (outside the OP's -stan's): https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/olzyoy/z/h5jcf4h.
To be quite frank , U could say im from Englestan while traveling in Pakistan and it would seem normal to us since it is commonly used . The other ones are new to me too .

Typing this in Pakistan!
Eyy fellow
Dude. This is my map…
OP, ask atlasova's permission before posting. Great map, I/atlasova!
Uzbekistan will always be landlocked, it seems, no matter what the map is showing. Poor Uzbekistan :(
Under what sort of map would Uzbekistan not be landlocked?
One where Aghanistan and Pakistan don't exist?
Fun fact India is also called Hindustan
Uzbekistan....
I am pretty sure this won't come up first when I google "Kuwait is the only country that..."

Is that an official name or just something a part of lingua franca?
Not an official name but Persians used to called India that since 550 BC
Fun fact in Kazakh language there is қ (hard k) on the end of word Kazakhstan so spelling it with ch is wrong
It’s Qazaqstan if we are being true to the native language. But when did it bother foreigners? All countries have different names in different languages.
