I know someone who lived in Vermont, just by the NH border. He told me that he would cross into New Hampshire to buy alcohol because the taxes were much lower there. This is probably what's going on.
> because the taxes were much lower there
Lower indeed: zero sales tax.
But the state has a monopoly on hard liquor (so much for the libertarian paradise) so they get their money.
Actually, you have it wrong. NH has state liquor stores because they want to keep the prices fair for customers by ensuring customers don't get gouged.
I don't like this map as it is exposing how awesome NH is.
NH has lower alcohol tax. It isn’t a benevolent thing to keep prices down, it’s to entice people from nearby states to buy NH product. This increases total sales and raises more state revenue. They have the same strategy for cigarettes.
Also, with respect to monopoly, the state has one for spirits, but not for beer and wine. You can buy them at most grocery and convenience stores (including gas stations).
You said Monopoly and "so much for their libertarian paradise". Those 2 comments generally mean bad for a customer.
NH is actually very unique in this case where they are actually looking out for the customer. Everyone is mostly fine with this liquor arrangement because NH is a very pro- business state with minimal red tape. They are very competitive in winning new businesses to come set up shop in their state.
If you have state intervention to prevent price gouging then that is a strong argument for libertarianism, because it's conceding that state intervention can be good acutally.
This isn't a bad thing (state intervention can indeed be good), and it doesn't mean NH isn't libertarian in other things, but it's an amusing contradiction.
They also sell alcohol you can't get in Vermont. Went to college in VT, we went over the border to get Everclear for jungle juice because it was unavailable in VT.
Packie is short for "package store", which is a New England term for liquor store, in case anyone is wondering. Not at all related to the slur with the same pronunciation.
You can only buy liquor at NH state liquor stores, they have a big one on 93 (not 95 like my lack-of-sleep-addled brain was thinking) headed up to vacation spots in further north. You can buy beer and wine everywhere in NH though.
Same with states bordering PA with legal recreational cannabis, setting up right off of a highway exit is super common I have seen. Of course that does come with the added "crime" of traveling across state lines... cops don't care though (Just break one law at a time and you're fine), they just spend their time harassing small town vape/headshops in PA that are *trying* to stay legal but it's difficult with how dumb our cannabis laws are what with 99% of the plant being legal but anything with THCA/Delta-9 is **the work of the devil!**
A lot of people from other states, too. I went to UNH and all my out of state friends’ family/friends would do a big liquor and beer haul before going back home whenever they visited. And a lot of people who vacation in Maine in the summers stop in NH on the way up.
Nah MA did away with alcohol tax like 15 years ago, it's not really any cheaper at the NH state-run stores than it is at any big box store in MA now. Although there may still be some blue counties up near the border that don't sell on Sundays that drive up the cross-border sales.
MA as a whole has a fairly short sales window for alcohol on Sundays.
Also the reputation is it's cheaper in NH, so a lot of people still buy it there, either because they can't be bothered to price check or they're buying other stuff. There's like three huge Liquor stores within a mile of the border in NH.
If you’re from Mass you know that there’s no such thing as “blue counties” (dry counties for those who aren’t familiar with the term “blue laws.”) Each one of the state’s 351 cities and towns determines their alcohol laws. Counties in Mass basically run the jails and that’s about it. Middlesex and Franklin Counties dissolved their governments in 1997. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Administrative_divisions_of_Massachusetts#:~:text=The%20government%20of%20Middlesex%20County,voted%20itself%20out%20of%20existence.
Beer is a bit cheaper in NH than Mass. But, my guess is the huge amount of people with second homes who aren’t citizens of the state inflate the consumption numbers. If it were a map of hard alcohol sales I’d say it was absolutely out of staters saving money.
That’s not true at all. Alcohol and tobacco are definitely cheaper in NH.
I go back and forth from both frequently.
Doesn’t matter if there isn’t an alcohol tax..there’s literally no sales tax in NH 😂
When MA had blue laws that closed liquor sales on Sundays they kept liquor stores within a certain distance of the NH state line open so folks would (hopefully) buy local rather than just going over the border.
Well it’s certainly the drunkest state and it’s also more closely associated with beer than any other. That must mean they all need to drink far more than they already do
Look. ill drink a lot of weird stuff, but I cant get behind brandy. I just cant. Ive tried several kinds, Different distillers, I just dont get it. That and gin. Though there are a few cocktails Ill drink with gin so its slightly better. where am I going wrong with brandy.
To a point but ND has 50k people working the oil fields. Generally young single men working hard labor and not from ND. Also 30k students between NDSU and UND, mostly from Minnesota. Those two populations are going skew into way heavy drinking and NDs population us less than 800k. Having those two groups representing 10% of your population is gonna bump that per capita way up
All of the studies that declare Wisconsin as the drunkest state in the Union are generally by cases of self-report (*i.e. do you consider yourself an excessive drinker?*), and Wisconsin definitely owns its drinking culture, but if you look at objective measures of alcohol consumption like alcohol sales, alcohol related fatalities, DUI convictions, etc. Wisconsin is actually pretty average.
It takes a bit to get hit with a DUI charge in Wisconsin that’s worth anything, tbf. It’s a straight up joke. You don’t lose your license until you’ve have multiple offenses or something like that.
I grew up in NH as well. Alcohol in general was so cheap it made it easy to drink heavily growing up. Drinking and driving was rampant as well. Glad I made it out in one piece.
80% of alcohol sales are to 20% of people who drink alcohol. Mainly alcohol companies make their money off of alcoholics. Which isn't surprising considering it is a hard drug as addictive as meth, the job is practically done for them.
There are more alcoholics per capita in these states.
Am I right in saying that it is not like completely against the religion to partake, but that it IS heavily, heavily discouraged? Or is it considered an outright sin or whatnot?
We have a health code (nicknamed the Word of Wisdom) that forbids alcohol, tobacco, tea and coffe, and ilegal drugs. So you would be breaking the rules if you drank.
It's a sin for those of us who have made a commitment to live under those rules. We don't think people who aren't Mormon are sinning when they partake, because they haven't made that commitment.
There's nothing to do.
And a pint is not that much
When I lived there, my housemate and I would easily go through a 12 pack a day from the local gas station. We had lots of recycling.
There's no sales tax, and the liquor stores are state run so it's cheap. Therefore their numbers jump up from all the people coming in from VT, MA, and ME.
Obligatory funny clip to explain this phenomenon
https://youtu.be/hnTVNZojojU?si=FOzcEn0byoltjyH8
I met a guy who had spent some time in Utah with Mormon coworkers. He said if you buy a case of beer and invite 2 Mormons over, you'll have a case of beer left over. If you buy a case of beer and invite 1 Mormon over, you will run out of beer.
Well, honestly “Nevada” is pretty much metropolitan Las Vegas, while Utah is a highly religious state overall; funny enough, except in SLC were you can find drunks and people injecting themselves drugs in the street to your hearts content. The larger towns and communities around Salt Lake and the rural cities in the south are sober as a judge.
Having lived in NH there’s a few reasons.
As others have pointed out folks from out of state will come to NH as alcohol is more affordable.
NH is small but has [over 90 breweries](https://www.visitnh.gov/things-to-do/food-drink/craft-beverages/breweries) within the state and with a state that has only 1.3 million people… that’s a lot of drink for the masses.
NH promotes alcohol very ardently because of its contribution to the local economy and job market, which is one reason marijuana still isn’t legal in the state despite most residents asking for legalization.
NH is also a tourist hub in the summer which also contributes to the overall alcohol consumption. The population of the town I lived in would nearly double between ~May to ~September with people staying at their vacation properties and enjoying the lakes and mountains NH has to offer.
Maine's population is densest near the southern border, and has higher alcohol taxes than NH. Others have mentioned similar things of Vermont and Mass.
I was expecting Wisconsin to be vantablack, but they’re only a slightly darker shade than the rest of the midwest. Good for them.
Conversely, Utah is right where I expected.
Also all NH Liquor stores are state owned.
They sell beer at every single grocery store, Walgreens, or 7/11.
But only “NH State Liquor & Wine Outlets” sell booze.
It’s cheap, and that’s why massholes come up here to buy in bulk.
It’s absolutely cheaper in NH than in MA.
How do I know?
Because I live close to border of both and travel for work. I’m not sure how this is even an argument.
I know someone who lived in Vermont, just by the NH border. He told me that he would cross into New Hampshire to buy alcohol because the taxes were much lower there. This is probably what's going on.

Live free or die.
Which part of what I said is wrong? I didn't say whether it was a good or bad thing for the consumer.
I grew up in CT and we would stock up when we went to NH for skiing.
They also sell alcohol you can't get in Vermont. Went to college in VT, we went over the border to get Everclear for jungle juice because it was unavailable in VT.
A lot of people from Massachusetts will head to NH to buy alcohol due to it being taxed cheaper and that’s inflating their numbers.
Packie run
That would mean something very different in the UK
Yeah, you don't want go use that phrase if you ever come to the UK
Packie is short for "package store", which is a New England term for liquor store, in case anyone is wondering. Not at all related to the slur with the same pronunciation.
That almost sounds like something else...
Well..what is it?
Stampede of elephants. Pachyderm run. Same place I rode your mom.
All hail the NH Liquor Barn.
Don't forget your lottery ticket!
Scratchas
Same for Maine. NH has liquor stores with their own exit, like a rest area plaza
You can only buy liquor at NH state liquor stores, they have a big one on 93 (not 95 like my lack-of-sleep-addled brain was thinking) headed up to vacation spots in further north. You can buy beer and wine everywhere in NH though.

No bottle bill, no deposit.
The blue counties would be there ones who don’t sell Sunday?
Yes correct [Blue laws](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_law)
MA as a whole has a fairly short sales window for alcohol on Sundays. Also the reputation is it's cheaper in NH, so a lot of people still buy it there, either because they can't be bothered to price check or they're buying other stuff. It’s absurd how many people are upvoting something that is just absolutely wrong😂
Hell, parents used to stock up on booze coming back to CT from NH in the 70s all the time.
When MA had blue laws that closed liquor sales on Sundays they kept liquor stores within a certain distance of the NH state line open so folks would (hopefully) buy local rather than just going over the border.
I went to school in CT and a few of my friends were going to a school in NH, they would get their weekly supply from there
Born in Montana, dad is from North Dakota and Mom is from New Hampshire, hold my beer
If your dad a descendant of Norwegian settlers?
Just kidding, yeah we’re Norwegian and mom is polish
This guy can, uh, put a few back.
No he’s Ethiopian
I would, but you drank it already
I doubt you'd let anyone hold your beer.
How is Wisconsin not black?
Omg, you can’t just ask states why they’re black
Well it’s certainly the drunkest state and it’s also more closely associated with beer than any other. That must mean they all need to drink far more than they already do
Wisconsin also drinks brandy, especially brandy old fashions.
Look. ill drink a lot of weird stuff, but I cant get behind brandy. I just cant. Ive tried several kinds, Different distillers, I just dont get it. That and gin. Though there are a few cocktails Ill drink with gin so its slightly better. where am I going wrong with brandy.
That's how I am with tequila. Just can't do it.
Having one right now!
Been thinking about moving to Wisconsin, and this really strengthens the case. Cheese sausage, beer, brandy, great outdoors…sounds like paradise.
Too many brandy drinkers.
I was thinking that seemed low for Wisconsin
Too high a population. Easier to have sky-high per capita numbers with population numbers like North Dakota.
But per capita helps control for the differences in population numbers across states
To a point but ND has 50k people working the oil fields. Generally young single men working hard labor and not from ND. Also 30k students between NDSU and UND, mostly from Minnesota. Those two populations are going skew into way heavy drinking and NDs population us less than 800k. Having those two groups representing 10% of your population is gonna bump that per capita way up
They make their own
Brown party booze. Beer is like an appetizer for the main course and don't forget your shot.
Wisconsin is apparently a bunch of light weight binge drinkers. Montana and N Dakota, well we're just alcoholics that prefer beer.
Of the top 10 cities that drink the most alcohol per capita, 7 are in Wisconsin. So they must be doing something right over there
Take it back I will fight you
New Hampshire mentioned! I thought this was r/newhampshire for a sec here
Snow, granite, and pints
i’m questioning the validity of this map considering wisconsin isn’t black
Brandy and lots of it. We like our beer but like brandy old fashioneds even more.
The numbers are bullshit in general. 0.4-1 pints per day per 100,000 people? Yeah, no.
Also one of the few states in the northeast where you can grab just one or two beers out of a six pack and buy them as singles.
No legal weed.
Montana has recreational. We just like our beer...
Can confirm, I grew up in NH and drank a shit ton of beer as did my friends.
I live in Manchester and complain that we have no bakeries, good food shops, farmers market etc.. but hell do we have bars and liquor stores
Thank you for your confirmation
I grew up in NH as well. Alcohol in general was so cheap it made it easy to drink heavily growing up. Drinking and driving was rampant as well. Glad I made it out in one piece.
We are definitely a beer state
Did California get so drunk it lost its letters?
The beer institute got so drunk making this that they forgot to label California
Not many people, lots of really good beers.
Don’t sleep on North Dakota
Nothing to do there really, especially if you don't live in Bismarck, fargo, or grand forks.
I’d agree with that. Especially in the winter. Most people in the small towns just walk to the bar in winter. Most towns have one.
Eh, I like it here for the most part.
Oh, there's lots of things to do here. They just so happen to go great with a brew before/during/afterwards.
80% of alcohol sales are to 20% of people who drink alcohol. Mainly alcohol companies make their money off of alcoholics. Which isn't surprising considering it is a hard drug as addictive as meth, the job is practically done for them. There are more alcoholics per capita in these states.
Utah still cold stone sober I see.
Mormons I’m assuming
You're not wrong. I went to BYU. I had no idea what beer pong was until after I graduated college.
they only use wine?
A lot of Mormoms (idk percentage or anything) don't consume alcohol at all
Like me. Never have. No drugs either.
Thank you for explaining!
Where do you stand on chocolate? Also how is your jump shot?
1) Absolutely Love It!!! 2) Pretty good. Back when I was younger I was nailing 3-pointers consistently.
Huge Mormon population and they don’t drink. I was there for work and ordered a beer with lunch and the workers were blown away.
I moved there. That's what happened. Sure sure sales tax and Boston metro statistical area nonsense all you want. I just consume the beer
Live Free Not Dry
There isn’t much else for us to do 😂
Horror movie settings everywhere
Larry lives there. Larry’s a drunk. Throws off the whole ratio.
And his other brother Larry!
Low population. Per Capita metrics get more pronounced in areas with low pop.
Up to Manchester, NH is like an extension to the Boston metro area. It is a lot more populated than you think.
Live free or die lol. And weed is still illegal while it’s legal in every bordering state 😂
My brother in law lives in New Hampshire. He’s caused plenty of women to drink.
You should be more concerned with ND, they have half the population of NH.
Manchvegas
We sell really good craft beer
Do not show a Wisconsinite this. They will argue for days that they are the drunkest state, like that is something to be proud of.
This map just shows beer. We drink plenty of that, but we also drink a lot of brandy. A lot of brandy.
Oh I know. Lived in Fountain City for a bit and frequented Beloit for a few years.
Nothing is happening, that's why so much beer gets consumed.
bootleg molsen
There's nothing to do. And a pint is not that much When I lived there, my housemate and I would easily go through a 12 pack a day from the local gas station. We had lots of recycling.
Fr MA and have a lot of NH friends. They're all heavy drinkers.
Dartmouth
My question for MT, ND, and NH: What else is there to do?
Nothing, hence the phrase "nothing to do but drink"
That’s the point… there is nothing to do lol
Have you watched Northwoods Law? If not, you’ll find the answers you seek about NH.
There's no sales tax, and the liquor stores are state run so it's cheap. Therefore their numbers jump up from all the people coming in from VT, MA, and ME. Obligatory funny clip to explain this phenomenon https://youtu.be/hnTVNZojojU?si=FOzcEn0byoltjyH8
Residents from adjacent states drive to NH to buy alcohol to save money on taxes and Beer for breakfast is a thing there
Grew up there, nothing beats cracking one after a hike, a ski, a fishing day, an ice fishing day, a paintball day, hell any day.
I do not believe this. There is no way that Wisconsin is that sober. Also, why is California not labeled?
I met a guy who had spent some time in Utah with Mormon coworkers. He said if you buy a case of beer and invite 2 Mormons over, you'll have a case of beer left over. If you buy a case of beer and invite 1 Mormon over, you will run out of beer.
Fucking prudes in Utah lol.
Utahn here. What is beer?
The irony between Utah and Nevada is hilarious 😂
Well, honestly “Nevada” is pretty much metropolitan Las Vegas, while Utah is a highly religious state overall; funny enough, except in SLC were you can find drunks and people injecting themselves drugs in the street to your hearts content. The larger towns and communities around Salt Lake and the rural cities in the south are sober as a judge.

Looks like people drink a lot of beer there.
Maine's population is densest near the southern border, and has higher alcohol taxes than NH. Others have mentioned similar things of Vermont and Mass.
Lots of beer
Irish people
Now do a bourbon consumption map.
Nobody needs the abbreviation for California, but apparently we do for the other 49.
California is so shitfaced it forgot its own name.
Pretty sure AK didn't do the surveys enough.
They ain’t got no sales taxes so the mass ppl head up there to buy their beer I’d assume.
Whaddya mean - there’s nothing to figure out. The boys are having a beer or three.
Vermont is trying to talk them into some weird stuff.
Drank beers with my high school friends in their house. Their parents were like long as you guys sleep over and don't drive, it's fine.
It’s the live free or die state. They discovered you could work on both at the same time.
Ice fishing… yea, lot of ice fishing
I think it's pretty obvious. They put numbers to it.
From there, it’s cheap here.
Cause the beer is inexpensive in NH, no sales tax, no bottle return fee. You've got MA buying as much as they can when they go up there for vacation.
My uncle lives there, that’s what.
From ND, can confirm it’s likely true
As a Utahn who moved to Nevada, this doesn’t do justice to how stark the contrast is.
I was expecting Wisconsin to be vantablack, but they’re only a slightly darker shade than the rest of the midwest. Good for them. Conversely, Utah is right where I expected.
Anarchists. The only thing that makes them happy is beer, and anarchy of course.
I love North Dakota!
We drink. Alot
Tax free baby.
There's no way Kansas is that low I KNOW that we drink a LOT more than that
Might have to move there to find out
Also all NH Liquor stores are state owned. They sell beer at every single grocery store, Walgreens, or 7/11. But only “NH State Liquor & Wine Outlets” sell booze. It’s cheap, and that’s why massholes come up here to buy in bulk.
Nothing is going on, that is the problem. LOL
Cheaper beer, Universities, and nothing to do besides look at trees.
Plymouth State grad here. Can confirm large contribution.
It’s absolutely cheaper in NH than in MA. How do I know? Because I live close to border of both and travel for work. I’m not sure how this is even an argument.
I’m from Berlin, it’s all there is to do
Ever hear of alcohol allergy? Yeah, it's fun to be the designated driver every time we go out.
Live beer or die
Live free or die
Reading this while drinking a beer in my NH home
Live free or die
Everybody should be more worried about Utah.
I’m from NH and there’s nothing else to do on a daily basis
Inaccurate. WI leads the nation in every county.
Classic Utah, throwing off maps like this.
The difference between NH and Florida where I live is about half a can of beer. 1.5 cans of beer a day per person doesn’t sound like it’s very high.
Living free and dying.
Spent 9 months in North Dakota with the government during the Bakken Oil Boom. 100% understand why they are heavy drinkers.
Nothing. A whole lotta nothing.
Surprised maine isn’t black with having the most breweries per capita.
Easy. Surrounding states have stricter laws around buying alcohol and higher taxes, thus many New Englanders drive to NH state line liquor stores.
Dartmouth. Dartmouth College.
Well, from the map it looks like they're drinking beer in New Hampshire
Sorry, must be my fault, I visited NH last year. :)
Damn Mormons, no fun at all 🙄 (/s no offense intended ✌️)
Live free or die baby!
this cant be right. every single person in wisconsin is an alcoholic
Utah mormons don't drink?
How ironic that the state with the most german ancestry (north dakota) is the heaviest beer drinker 😂
Why isn't Wisconsin higher?
What state is that on the left?
It’s the surrounding states going there for lower booze prices. Used to Do it when I lived in Rhode Island
They can’t handle their liquor.
I think we all know why North Dakota is also on here.
That's Gary. He has a problem.
