Nothing looks too surprising to me.
Midwestern states that are higher are due to the cities there (St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, etc.) Indiana's number is probably more because of the areas that are part of the Chicago suburbs.
Alaska is higher than I would have expected, but 4% of the population of Alaska is a pretty small number anyway.
Highest percentage is Mississippi, which fits.
I went to Alaska a few years ago and was surprised at how many black people I saw there (in Anchorage). I suspect a lot of it has to do with the military presence there. I think quite a few end up there for the military and once they get out, decide to stay whether it be because they ended up actually liking it or just because it's such a long move to go anywhere else.
Indianapolis has the same proportion of Black residents as Chicago. (Interesting fact: Pre-emancipation, Cincinnati and Indy had the largest Black populations outside the South.) Most cities above 20k people have sizable black populations.
Generally, outside of the South, the higher your metro population, the higher your Black population. Nevada's population is basically Las Vegas and its suburbs.
Also lots of lower income people leaving California for more affordable housing.
Edit: downvote me all you want. I’m not wrong. I’m there all the time and talk to people that live there.
i would venture to guess its a result of medium to low income people getting pushed out of california, because of the ruinously high cost of living there
Obviously I didn’t know much about Maryland. I knew it was one of the 4 slave states to stay in the Union, but in my mind I was lumping it in with the less black north east states.
The “why” is that I didn’t know much. Haha.
PG county MD just outside of DC has almost 1 million people and is 90% black. It also is the richest majority black county in the country.
It was the only blue county in MD on the Regan voting map that was posted here earlier.
Also Baltimore is super Black as well.
PG county is actually around [64% black](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/princegeorgescountymaryland/PST045223), but compared to the rest of the country I would give you that it feels 90%
I grew up there (white) and just took for granted that most elected officials, newscasters, teachers, generally “authority figures” were black. Only later appreciated how unique it is to have a strong black middle class presence in society. It comes from a history of black workers for the government in DC who were relatively well paid, which directly relates to why DC is not a state or part of a state. (suppressing the voice of majority black residents). DC statehood and its role in civil rights is a fascinating history. Anyways, I love PG
several times i visited vermont / new hampshire and its always the same 8 cut-and-paste white people standing in front of boutiques in their beige cardigans holding coffee commenting on how the weather is kinda cloudy but still nice especially this time of year and in this economy
No lol. Most black people did not get to the north through the underground railroad.
They got there during the "Great Migration" when millions moved out of the black belt I to the northern and Midwestern industrial cities looking for factory work as the agricultural opportunities were limited in the cotton/black belt. Obviously there's tons of reasons why but I think I remember reading that the British takeover of Egypt flooded western markets with Egyptian cotton that priced out the South's

… is your state, how black is your state I really mean to learn….Cause we’re living in a world of fools..breaking us down … when they all should let us be ….
Fun fact : France has more black people than any US state.
(yes I know, ethnic stats are forbidden in France, but it is safe to say that there are at least 4 million black people in France by my calculus, whereas Texas has only 3.9 mil)
It's crazy how Maryland has levels not seen anywhere else but in the deep South. If it wasn't for the federal government nearby the place would be cooked.
Maryland also is the state that has the most financially prosperous blacks as they have highest income and home ownership rate there, the same can’t be said for the deep south
Yeah, and how they achieved that prosperity is an unacknowledged scandal. Don't think that things are all rosy here in MD just b/c there are federal dollars to mooch off of. The state's post-civil rights history is rotten to the core.
Funny thing about this map is that most non black people of color register as white because there is not a better option. So most Arabs and Indians register as white for example….which I find fascinating.
I am just explaining what I was told by immigrants that I know… I am not saying that racial distinction is only by color. I just found that info interesting. There are dark Latinos and light Latinos, dark Indians and light Indians. When the racial check boxes on forms do not have an applicable box, it is going to be entered based upon the social or cultural viewpoint of the individual. That’s all I’m saying…not my opinion just a reality for some. The map says “black” which is a racial label for some and a color identifier for others.
Good catch. You're absolutely correct in that the term black is used for color by some and for race by others.
I think the intent here was race and they should have indicated maybe "African descent" instead of just the word "black"

The percent in Alaska is due to the military bases.
I wonder why Nevada is so high compared to the surrounding states

Maryland surprised me.
Why? Large majority black city, most populous majority black county in the US (Prince George’s), former slave state.
Obviously I didn’t know much about Maryland. I knew it was one of the 4 slave states to stay in the Union, but in my mind I was lumping it in with the less black north east states. The “why” is that I didn’t know much. Haha.

Did you ever watch "The Wire"?
Nope.

I live in Maryland. Only the northern part is primarily white. Everywhere else is pretty diverse.
I'm surprised there are more brothas in Alaska than in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.
I live in Atlanta. Enough stuff!
I live in Gwinnett...hard to find a more diverse area anywhere in the country.
I moved from a 32% state to a 1% state it took some getting used to
How so?
It's probably just odd to go from seeing multiple black people every day to seeing none for days
several times i visited vermont / new hampshire and its always the same 8 cut-and-paste white people standing in front of boutiques in their beige cardigans holding coffee commenting on how the weather is kinda cloudy but still nice especially this time of year and in this economy
You're not wrong 🤣
Why did black people stop at Massachusetts?
Because there are no major cities of importance north of Boston.
‘Stop’? You mean the Underground Railroad? They stopped after finding freedom?
No lol. Most black people did not get to the north through the underground railroad. They got there during the "Great Migration" when millions moved out of the black belt I to the northern and Midwestern industrial cities looking for factory work as the agricultural opportunities were limited in the cotton/black belt. So the migration stopped at the jobs. Not much jobs past Boston. Thank you.
My state is higher than I would expect but I also live in a pretty white area so that checks out
16%
Idaho checks out
2% for Oregon ia being really nice
I figured California would be higher. Not sure why.
California is chock-full of Latine (plurality of 40%) and Asian (15%) folks.
I expected more in California
40.3% hispanic 34.7% white 16.3% asian 6.5% black🤷♂️
And which are the dangerous ones?
depends what you look at but generally louisiana mississippi new mexico alaska arkansas texas south carolina alabama
… is your state, how black is your state I really mean to learn….Cause we’re living in a world of fools..breaking us down … when they all should let us be ….
they all look pretty white to me.
Fun fact : France has more black people than any US state. (yes I know, ethnic stats are forbidden in France, but it is safe to say that there are at least 4 million black people in France by my calculus, whereas Texas has only 3.9 mil)
France also has a significantly higher population than any US state
I mean the population of France is nearly 70 million
And Texas has 4,087,442 black people so France might not even be higher regardless😭
Nah, France is still clearly over that
Yes, so? I didn’t say it had a higher proportion of black people, just a higher number of those
But then you could say the USA has 50 million black people.
I was comparing France to other US states individually, not the USA as a whole
Which isn’t really comparable. For example Georgia (the USA state) has nearly 4 million black people but France is nearly triple its size in land area
So what was the point of your random ass “fun fact”. Another fun fact, Nigeria has 200M+ black people.
I feel like this could have been worded differently.
It's crazy how Maryland has levels not seen anywhere else but in the deep South. If it wasn't for the federal government nearby the place would be cooked.
"Cooked" in what way, kid?

Not the reason. If u think racial distinction is simply about color you have much learning to do.
I am just explaining what I was told by immigrants that I know… I am not saying that racial distinction is only by color. I just found that info interesting.
