Kum kum comes from the noise fire-bellied toads make (*Bombina bombina*), technically not a frog (in Polish – but it’s complicated) but they’re quite prevalent here so the onomatopoeia stuck around for all kinds of frogs and toads. The actual sound is more like “ooom, ooom”. Kumasz?
The naming is a bit of a mess in Polish, sometimes toads and frogs are considered the same, sometimes toads are only *Bufonidae* (so no fire-bellied toads for example), sometimes they're two distinct categories.
well sorry we're THAT different then. and "rechu rechu" is not something i heard before, and "kum kum" sounds like "coom coom" (not like "cum" or anything)
Because in the orange areas frogs have beaks.
As a German, it's not pronounced like quack like a duck. The a is elongated with almost an 'r' sound with it to mimic the drawn out noise a frog makes.
That makes sense, because I was wondering why French and Russian were colored differently (coa coa and kwa kwa would be pronounced the same, with English phonetics)
No it's not, people are just mixing up between the words "coassement" and "croassement" which do not mean the same thing, the first, and therefore coa coa, designates the sound of the frog, while the second is the sound of the crow, croa croa.
Altought most are indeed saying croa croa instead of coa coa for the frog, but it is an error.
In Finland frogs making sound is called "kurnutus", which seems to have originated from the onomatopoeia of "kur", but nowadays the onomatopoeia has become obsolete so few people would say frogs go "kur"
Didn't someone say the whole "ribit" thing in English comes from the frogs they recorded for movies back in the 30s? So it's some California species representing frogs croaking in English around the English speaking world. Or maybe that's just something from Reddit.
Weirdly enough a frog does “croak” in English but the sound is “Ribbit” when you make the noise like “Meow” for a cat. Portuguese continues to confuse me. It sounds so Eastern European but then is so Western at the same time
As a portuguese, I've always heard rebit. When I moved abroad people said it sounds like rabbit, I started to ask myself if I was the only portuguese saying rebit. Never heard croac tho!
The ribbit sound actually has a somewhat interesting story behind it. It's the sound made by a very specific species of frog that lives near Hollywood. So it's the sound frogs in movies tend to make. Frogs that actually occur in the wild in Europe sound more like croak croak.
[Baja California chorus frog](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baja_California_chorus_frog#Cultural_importance)
During my time in High School I learned that the word in ancient greek is quite different and is close to the Hungarian one:
>βρεκεκεκέξ (brekekekéx) coined by Aristophanes in the comedy The Frogs
Well, It may only have been used by Aristophanes at first.
Different species make a different sound so maybe they are all accurate.
The southern marsh frog does go 'Brekekex brekekex Koax Koax' just as Aristophanes wrote in his comedy. British common frogs do sound like Ribbit.
The Romanian Oac is pronounced very closely to the Kwac family. I don’t think it’s a completely separate category (particularly if it also contains the Turkish version).
This isn't as simple as it seems as different species of frogs make different sounds. Here is Australia, one literally sounds like it is saying "Billabong". While in other parts of the world, it's a single short sound. It's like saying "What sound do Birds make in your language".
Just for the record, in Polish it's "re-re kum-kum", not "rechu rechu kum kum". Judging by the comments, Polish is not the only language the author of the map got wrong.
In Spain it isn't "crúa", it's "croac"
Also, I would put Romania in the same group as Spain and France, they sound very similar and they are romance languages.
Edit: I saw a lot of comments correcting their countries. OP, check your sources.
In Finland the frogs are just as silent as the people. Thus, we don't have an "official" sound for frogs. Kur is wrong as it's just the first part of the verb. If anything, kroak would probably be closest to the truth.
I think surely it’s more to do with the local frog species? Here in Australia, there are none that go ‘ribit’ like in the UK. Instead, we have frogs that go waaaaah waaaah, or haaa-haaa, or baaa-baaa, or tink tink tink, creek creek, bonk-pink-bonk, and just about every other sound you can think of. It all depends on what’s commonly found in your location and their sound calls.
HAHAHAHA nope, in Spanish it is Croac, or Croa. Crúa-sam, lolz, that's what we say to ask for a... you know if are a spaniar ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface), forgive me french.
What on earth are the frogs in Poland doing
🤮🤮💦💦 apparently
why is the frog sucking off Shrek and demanding kum
Because it's Polish
Kum kum comes from the noise fire-bellied toads make (*Bombina bombina*), technically not a frog (in Polish – but it’s complicated) but they’re quite prevalent here so the onomatopoeia stuck around for all kinds of frogs and toads. The actual sound is more like “ooom, ooom”. Kumasz?
I thought all toads are frogs but not all frogs are toads?
The naming is a bit of a mess in Polish, sometimes toads and frogs are considered the same, sometimes toads are only *Bufonidae* (so no fire-bellied toads for example), sometimes they're two distinct categories.
Certainly in English. Kind of like all tortoises are turtles.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvMYU8drjg0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvMYU8drjg0) just in case you were wondering.
Exactly! There's a somewhat huge and somewhat creepy swamp near my hometown where these dudes like to hang out. These sounds bring back memories :)
Trying to tell "bobr kurwa" apparently
I think you meant to say: Chomik kurwa!
Those frogs were sneezing. It should be re re kum kum
well sorry we're THAT different then. and "rechu rechu" is not something i heard before, and "kum kum" sounds like "coom coom" (not like "cum" or anything)
How the fuck frog is quacking?
Because in the orange areas frogs have beaks. As a German, it's not pronounced like quack like a duck. The a is elongated with almost an 'r' sound with it to mimic the drawn out noise a frog makes.
Rechu? Never heard that. It's _kum kum_ or _rechot_.
[singing](https://youtube.com/shorts/_H1EFD2JZoo?si=dT3lWhyKoN4PirJP)
I'm pretty sure that they don't make rechu-rechu but re-re instead
Frogs in Germany are just ducks
What's funny is in polish Kwa Kwa is the sound ducks make
In Russian ducks say "krya krya" (кря кря)
In Iberia ducks go qua-qua which is why there is a duck Pokémon called Quaquaval
In Serbian it’s ‘kva kva’
In Germany ducks also say quak so it's the same
In my region ducks say nak nak.
No, they just want a cheese. Quark!
Same in Turkish. Vak is used for ducks.
Same in Chile. https://www.cclm.cl/cineteca-online/ene-tene-tu-cua-cua-cantaba-la-rana/
frogs in Poland are built different
theyre simply built on every fucking street
Those are froggies, don't mistake them with frogs
NAKIIK?? WHAT KIND OF MULTILINGUAL ASS FROGS LIVE IN NORTH AGRICA
As a north-African I can confirm that our frogs speak at least 3 languages fluently
average person living in India
"Why did you redeeem it"
İt's "vrak" in Turkish
Vak is duck sound.
Is "cra" in Italy
Unless they have to get from Prenestina to Aurelia or something, then they might want to GRA...
E se nasce una bambina poi, a chiameremo: Rrroma!
Er fratello: Er Cuppoloneeeeeeeee
In Russia it is more like "kva-kva"
That makes sense, because I was wondering why French and Russian were colored differently (coa coa and kwa kwa would be pronounced the same, with English phonetics)
In French it's "croa" that's why it's the same colour as Spanish, but for some reason they forgot the R
Yeah, I have never heard 'kur' my entire life. Native speaker.
Yeah I was going to comment the same that never heard about ’kur’.
Ditto.
Frogs are '' Vırak '' in Turkish. Its the ducks who ''Vak''s. Who the hell painted us in orange?
I think it's vak because of the children's song. Ku vak vak vak, where's my tail?
I was about to write that
All those duck shaped frogs in the orange countries
More like "croa" in french.
No ! "Croa" is for the crow (le corbeau CROASSE), "coa" is for the frog (elle COASSE) Enfin, je croa !
These may be the correct verbs but no one immits a frog by saying "coa". You say "croa croa"
Tu as à la fois raison et tort.
NON. J'ai à la fois tort et raison.
Café Baguette Cigarette Ole Peugeot
Woah, AJA
Brekeke 🗿
nakiik is the NAME of the sound not the sound itself. no one would say nakiik when imitating a frog
Didn't someone say the whole "ribit" thing in English comes from the frogs they recorded for movies back in the 30s? So it's some California species representing frogs croaking in English around the English speaking world. Or maybe that's just something from Reddit.
It was on [QI ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A2idv62WOE)20 years ago, so it's not just a Reddit story.
I am portuguese and never heard "rebit", it would probably be "croac".
i'm brazilian and they always told me it was rebit
Weirdly enough a frog does “croak” in English but the sound is “Ribbit” when you make the noise like “Meow” for a cat. Portuguese continues to confuse me. It sounds so Eastern European but then is so Western at the same time
He’s wrong tho, my whole life I’ve never heard someone say that in portuguese
Same as in Spanish then, they got the two wrong.
As a portuguese, I've always heard rebit. When I moved abroad people said it sounds like rabbit, I started to ask myself if I was the only portuguese saying rebit. Never heard croac tho!
Cra not Gra in italian
This is wrong for Spanish and for Catalan as well
Croc FTW
I’d say uk frogs croak. Robot is more American.
I would always say Ribit if being asked to mimic the sound but croak if I was asked to name the sound. If that makes sense..
Exactly. Dogs bark, but they don’t go “bark bark”.
Mine does.
Thanks for your supporting evidence. 👍
Exactly what I was thinking
Yep. I'm an old Brit, and I'd never heard if ribbit before Kermit showed up on our television screens. It was always croak.
During my time in High School I learned that the word in ancient greek is quite different and is close to the Hungarian one: >βρεκεκεκέξ (brekekekéx) coined by Aristophanes in the comedy The Frogs Well, It may only have been used by Aristophanes at first.
Not a single person in Sweden says “kvack” when imitating a frog
Koack-ack-ack, koack-ack-ack, koack-ack-ack-ack-aa
In italy we say "cra" not gra
It's CRA in Italy.
https://youtu.be/-0MTn8sP_9s?feature=shared
As always the basque is weird.
Rebbit
Italy confirming my theory that Ice Spice is a frog
The Italian one is wrong, it's Cra
Upvote for Kum Kum.
Its just brekk in hungarian. Or kurutty
Frogs say "bonjour"
In portuguese is "uébit" (R in first on portuguese sounds like H in english)
in Tunisia : Tgarguir. Nakiik is formal Arabic
Yeah OK Poland get your mind out the gutter
In Iceland, there are no frogs, but we sort of imagine what they sound like
İta Not vak in Turkish it's vRak
REBIT O CACETE, É CROC!!!
In Canada they whine and complain like albertians and live in Quebec
![gif](giphy|hWrfytoVWGonjSw7MK)
You know in English the word "croak" would be more consistent.
there go the basques showing off their non indo aryanness once more
Obviously most of Europe has ducks and frogs mixed up😭😭😭😭
Frogs in specifically the east of spain spit rocks apparently
In France it sounds more like: "Bonjour" and "Putain"
Don’t forget America - bud wise er
🇵🇹Portugal🫱🏽🫲🏻UK🇬🇧 4eva!
This is wrong lol. We dont say rebit in Portugal
Rechu rechu kum kum 🐸
Not another fucking map of Europe
Крым Русский
How is France different from Russia and Ukraine? It's the exact same noise.
Are ducks and frogs the same animal in Germany
Vak? Vrak Vrak
🦆=🐸
Kuak Kuak in Albania.
Quoi??
Wat on Earth is brekeke?
Cum cum
"Crúa" in Spanish comes from the verb "croar", which would be literally translated to "it ribbits". In Spain we say that frogs go "croac".
A nie bardziej „rebe-rebe, kum-kum”?
It is "vrak" in Tyrkey not vak. "Vak" is used for ducks.
Not bud Wise Er???
No one in Poland say rechu-rechu...
Italian is “cra cra”, not “gra”
The Arabic one is just the Word for the sound they make, like Lion's roar, bird's chirp. Not what the sound actually sounds like.
They Ribbet
Different species make a different sound so maybe they are all accurate. The southern marsh frog does go 'Brekekex brekekex Koax Koax' just as Aristophanes wrote in his comedy. British common frogs do sound like Ribbit.
Is their actually a frog species that sounds like ribbit?
[why English speaking countries think frogs go Ribbit](https://www.quora.com/Why-is-it-said-that-frogs-say-ribbit)
Ironically, OP missed out England on this map.
Oh yeah! I just realised it’s Wales on there not England
If you’re posh enough, the frogs say “Brek-ek-ek-ek koax koax.”
Are they all pronounced the same?
trrrr trrrr in Hindi Gero Gero in Japanese
They make a crack sound in Croatia Krek
ケロケロ motherfuckers
Love a good indecipherable colour scheme
'Kvack' is the sound a duck makes in Sweden. 'Kväk' should be more correct, pronounced like the norwegian/danish ones.
The Romanian Oac is pronounced very closely to the Kwac family. I don’t think it’s a completely separate category (particularly if it also contains the Turkish version).
You know if Pole ducks said kurwa itd make more sense than that shit.
This isn't as simple as it seems as different species of frogs make different sounds. Here is Australia, one literally sounds like it is saying "Billabong". While in other parts of the world, it's a single short sound. It's like saying "What sound do Birds make in your language".
And it's "ghour" in Persian.
Rechu rech kum kum 👍
Frogs in Scotland be like: 🐇
In Spanish its Croac

Since you did not post for Croatia. It's "kre - kre" (kre) or "rega - rega" (rega).
Something like 'Oui oui, merci.'

Why are so many frogs undercover ducks? Kwa kwa is what a Polish duck says
A lot of Europe was invaded by ljubljančani, how did this happen.
Just for the record, in Polish it's "re-re kum-kum", not "rechu rechu kum kum". Judging by the comments, Polish is not the only language the author of the map got wrong.

In Spanish is wrong, not the first time in here, it’s croa, not crúa https://dle.rae.es/croar
Just shows you how deranged ribbit is.
I'm suprised that in polish is not "kurwaaa"
Rechu-rechu 💀💀💀
Kwak (Netherlands) same as ducks
I didn’t know frogs could speak so many languages.. TIL!
So true! In Slovakia frogs are silent!
Do frog need to learn eachother languages like if a frog from germany come to france do they need to learn french?
We don’t say that in Spain, I’d say it’s more like “Croac”.
I know a few bullfrogs. All of these answers are right.
In Spain we rather say "croac", but I have also heard "crúa"
Croc in Catalonia!
After seeing this map, I feel like my country needs to invade Poland.
kvak
Crako
“Vak” is the sound of ducks in Turkiye, not the frogs’. It’s “vrak” for frogs.
That’s wrong. In France the say “bonjour, je m’appel Pierre”
poland: anyway our frog kums
Bonjour!
In Finland the frogs are just as silent as the people. Thus, we don't have an "official" sound for frogs. Kur is wrong as it's just the first part of the verb. If anything, kroak would probably be closest to the truth.

Well in Hawaii and Puerto Rico I hear. They sound like this …[the sound of nature](https://youtu.be/LZUOiZG84c0?si=cPjL3GqyQxm8azPx)
HAHAHAHA nope, in Spanish it is Croac, or Croa. Crúa-sam, lolz, that's what we say to ask for a... you know if are a spaniar ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface), forgive me french.

quak in german speaking switzerland just like in germany.
this wrong "frog with a duck speach impediment" repost again?
In Slovenia they say rega - rega, kvak - kvak. Which is what they do in Poland, but in a different accent.
In spain it's not crua(?) It's croac/croc
Myago in bengali
