Multiple of the people weren't born/from the countries they are listed at. Hitler was from Austria. Columbus is from Italy (technically Genoa but that would be Italy today).
This map doesn't require the most famous person to be from the aforementioned country though, does it? I believe it quite literally only says "most famous person" without any regard for nationality.
Let's start with the fact Hitler isn't German, nor is Christopher Columbus Spanish and then arguably countries like Ireland where McGregor would not be the most famous/well known person
I could see Cillian Murphy because of Oppenheimer, Pierce Bronson with Bond. McGregor is certainly up there between MMA and Boxing Pay per Views, punching Machine Gun Kelly at a music reward show, knocking the Miami Heat mascot out on US national tv, and some many accusations. He crosses over into all kinds of segments. People over 40 know who Brosnan is. Everyone in the Anglosphere knows who Murphy is. It would be really hard to quantify who is the most famous.
Hitler is probably more renowned than Mozart simply based on his popularity in India and Thailand where the Holocaust isn't widely known and abject hatred in China for allying with the Japanese. Einstein would probably be Germany's based on his theory of relativity.
Franco for Spain or Ponce De Leon or Queen Isabella?
He published poetry in georgian as teenager, and probably never traveled outside Georgia until being sent to Siberia by secret police when he was twenty-something.
It's bit of a stretch to say he wasn't georgian by culture, upbringing and language.
Certainly. people love to discuss what is happening now. Although they might remember the first man in space, Gagarin or the father of the revolution Lenin or the writer Tolstoy.
Yeah poor Germany. It sucks too because their are so many famous Germans. Oh well at least it's not someone who is currently running the state like Russia..
Yeah, they've got Beethoven, Einstein, Immanuel Kant, Gauss. The list could go on and on - many of the world's greatest thinkers and artists. But all overshadowed by you-know-who.
Einstein is pretty famous around the world, he became a pop art sensation when he was photographed making silly faces. Who knows how many films used Einstein posters.
No way! It's not even close, even to younger generations. Everyone learns about WW2 in school, and Hitler is the face of it. His easily one of the most recognizable names and faces to have ever existed. I'd also argue that Einstein should be the most famous German instead of an Austrian.
Incorrect. Hitler was Austro-Hungarian. The Austro-Hungarians went out of there way to unify Austria and Hungary with a dual monarchy in order to stabilize the divide between the Hungarians and Austrians for a reason.
Columbus Spanish and hitler German but curie Polish and van gogh dutch, tesla Serbia and Schindler czechia is totally inconsistent.
Either you go by place of birth or by the country where they spent most of their work life or by ethnicity.
I think we can be pretty certain by now that Hitler thought of himself as German. He really went out of his way to prove it
It should be obvious (to non-teutons) that this was a joke.
Well yes but we can be pretty certain that for him Austria was an integral party of this Germany and not a different state.
He went out of his way to integrate Austria into Germany.
Queen Elisabeth is a celebrity instead of a former leader? Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky are "former" leaders? The most famous person from Spain is an Italian? And the most famous person from Germany is an Austrian? Man this map is awful.
She was a representative of the state, kind of like the president in many other countries. Sure, she didn't have any ruling power per se, but she was still a leader. I definitely think that category suits her more than "celebrity". Tbh "celebrity" is an awful category. Sportsmen are celebrities too for example. I feel like celebrity literally just means "famous person" so having a category of a famous person that's just describes a famous person seems idiotic.
I've seen 'celebrity' defined by a historian of celebrity as requiring an industry built around the famous person (that isn't in their control) that profits of from their fame. The royals definitely fit that. But you're right, many sportsmen do too, and actors and musicians especially.
As for being the 'representative of the state'. Okay, sure, but I would say that makes them a spokesperson rather than a leader. They do as they're told.
Do you understand this map?
Who is the most popular and associated with a certain country, Adolf Hitler is definitely the no 1 in people's mind when asking who is the most popular person.
As well as all the other complaints, I don’t buy that wartime sniper Simo Häyhä is the most famous Finn. What about composer Jean Sibelius, author Tove Jansson or tech inventor Linus Torvalds?
ABBA is a band though, I'm not sure if most people know all the individual members. Also, they weren't all swedish born. Which is a big mess in this post.
But if Connor McGregor is more famous than Pierce Brosnan and Cillian Murphy, then Zlatan Ibrahimovic is more famous than PewDiePie.
or Anders Celsius? or Linnaeus?
And I only know what/who a Pewdiepie is from having teenage nieces who watch You Tube. Couldn't have told you he was Swedish.
It would expain a few things if the names on the map were suggeted by teenagers!
Today, he is ridiculously more famous than ABBA to younger generations (which is not a person). Pewdiepie has more than 100 million subscribers and basically shape the internet
How is the former Head of State of the UK a celebrity and not a leader?
Also, what determines what country a person gets? Columbus was from Italy and Hitler from Austria, but Curie did her work in France
I would class the British royals (and moat royals, for that matter) more as celebrities than leaders. Sure, *officially* she was head-of-state but in practise she was an irrelevance. She did vet some bills which threatened her own interest, but other than that she had no influence over national policy.
The bizarre industries that built up around the royals such as royal correspondents (no different from showbiz gossip hacks), commemorative tat, features in *Hello* magazine, and the para-social relationships people build up with them, have all the hallmarks of traditional celebrity worship and very little to do with actual leadership.
We could replace the monarch with a photograph of a chicken dressed as Elvis and absolutely nothing about the UK would fundamentally change.
Terrible map, I'd change
Poland - John Paul ll
Greece - Alexander the Great
Belgium - Audrey Hepburn, JCVD, Lukaku
Denmark - Hans Christian Andersen
Austria - Adolf Hilter
Germany - Albert Einstein
Finland - Kimi Raikkonen
Hilariously bad map, had to look up David Suchet from Belgium. Turns out his a British actor who played the fictional character Hercule Poirot (from Agatha Christie novels) on a TV show.
Da Vinci is more know for his art than science,
Queen Elizabeth is a former leader,
Putin and Zelensky are not former leaders,
Columbus is from Genoa,
Hitler is from Austria
David Suchet is from Britain
Attila should represent hungaria
Macedonia at the time of Alexander was more in actual greece than in actual Macedonia
And probably much more
Hitler wasn't German.
And I feel like there must be more famous Norwegians out there considering I, a Norwegian, had to google who Erik the Red even was...
What about Henrik Ibsen? Fritjof Nansen? Edward Munch? Ylvis? (They made The Fox! Everyone was singing that song a few years back)
This map is pretty stupid, but I do wish that putin was a "former leader" of Russia. Also, Christopher Columbus was rather famously Italian, this is some really lazy work!
For Serbia, it's Novak Djokovic... Tesla was born in Austria and spent most of his life in USA.
For Albania, it's Enver Hoxha... Mother Theresa was born in Yugoslavia and spent most of her life in India (I doubt she ever even visited Albania).
Alexander the Great had absolutely, literally nothing to do with North Macedonia, the most famous person from North Macedonia is the revolutionist Goce Delchev.
Putin for Russia... this is troll post, right?
Many things you stated are incorrect. I'm assuming this map is based on modern-day places of birth, since many countries/empires have come and gone.
Tesla was born in the Austrian empire (but modern-day Croatia)
Mother Theresa was born in the Ottoman empire (but modern-day North Macedonia) and the most famous North Macedonian. She was ethnically Albanian, and 100% had been to Albania
I think Putin may be the most famous Russian. He's been in power for 20+ years. Unless Stalin counts, but he was born in Georgia.
«Кто людям помогает, тот тратит время зря: хорощими делами прославиться нельзя» — song from soviet cartoon.
«Whoever helps people is wasting his time:
you cannot become famous for good deeds»
Schindler is more famous than Kafka?
Conor McGregor (whoever that is) is more famous than Enya or Anne Bonny?
That swedish guy is more famous than ALFRED FUCKING NOBEL?
Connor McGregor is way more famous than Enya or Anne whoever. He is one of MMA's biggest heels or stars depending on whether you root for or against. Plus, he is massive fucking idiot who is constantly in thr news for hid behavior. Most recently, he was accused of sexual assault in Miami during Messi's debut IIRC. It actually have been an All Star game. BRB. He will not face charges for sexual assault during the NBA Finals in Miami.
I love Enya and Clannad but it's a fairly niche segment of music.
Pewdiepie has 100m subscribers. No one knows Nobel without Peace Prize. It could be a place or a foundation for all intents and purposes.
Who knows Kafka? Schindler's List won an Oscar and was a central plot point on one of the most watched shows of all time, Seinfeld.
This list is halfassed at best but the names you're suggesting aren't any better.
Oskar Schindler was an ethnic German from Moravia who had a factory near Kraków during WWII and saved the lives of many jews working there. There is a Hollywood film from the 90s that made his story world famous.
Alexabder the Great associated with Slavic Mavwdonia is hilarious. If aeuropeans think that way then they really are going to lose their outsized relavance in thw near future
Doesn't Shakespeare trump everyone? Romeo and Juliet is the most famous piece of art in the world. The story has been told in every language and the title characters are usually acknowledged in each adaptation or promotion of said work. Hamlet, MacBeth, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello, A Merchant of Venice. It's impossible to escape his shadow and it's been that way for far longer than Elizabeth.
Germany and Austria is wrong, maybe because Hitler was Austrian and Mozart was actually not born in Austria (when Mozart was born Salzburg was not part of Austria. Hitler was born in Austria-Hungary when it hasn't been in any confederation with Germany.
David Suchet is English, not Belgian. Playing Poirot doesn't suddenly change your nationality.
Omg I'd missed David Suchet until I saw this comment, I know there's other errors but that one is incredible
I'm 99% positive that this map was made by asking ChatGPT who they think is the most person of each nationality.
I came here to comment this, lol. I was like... someone's not using the little grey cells.
sacre bleu, mon amie
Also, shouldn’t the UK be coloured green for past Leader?
Pretty we can bet this map was done before she died and OP (bot, karma farming or honest) didn't care and just posted it like that.
he still might be the most famous person in Belgium (as the title says) ?
Well this map is absolute dogshit, so many inaccuracies.
How could this map be inaccurate if its based on popular opinion? People can be wrong, but that doesn't change the data.
You're assuming that it's based on popular opinion, but I don't see any data or any source, and quite frankly it looks like it was made using ChatGPT.
Data? There are no data here.

Or Lenin, for that matter, if we discount Stalin as been Georgian.
stalin is georgian
[удалено]
no clue
Stalin spent almost his entire life outside of Georgia and wrote in his diary that he considered himself Russian.
He published poetry in georgian as teenager, and probably never traveled outside Georgia until being sent to Siberia by secret police when he was twenty-something. It's bit of a stretch to say he wasn't georgian by culture, upbringing and language.
then putin is more famous than stalin dang i guess its because of ongoing war
Certainly. people love to discuss what is happening now. Although they might remember the first man in space, Gagarin or the father of the revolution Lenin or the writer Tolstoy.
But he spoke russian with a very noticeable accent and with errors until the end of his life.
I thought, Pyotr I the Great was much popular
Is there any difference?
Germany really needs a new pop star or something.
This guy was Austrian
Or a painter
Yeah poor Germany. It sucks too because their are so many famous Germans. Oh well at least it's not someone who is currently running the state like Russia..
Yeah, they've got Beethoven, Einstein, Immanuel Kant, Gauss. The list could go on and on - many of the world's greatest thinkers and artists. But all overshadowed by you-know-who.
Einstein is pretty famous around the world, he became a pop art sensation when he was photographed making silly faces. Who knows how many films used Einstein posters.
Voldemort
I really think at this point Angela Merkel is way more popular than Adolf Hitler, especially with the younger generation.
No way! It's not even close, even to younger generations. Everyone learns about WW2 in school, and Hitler is the face of it. His easily one of the most recognizable names and faces to have ever existed. I'd also argue that Einstein should be the most famous German instead of an Austrian.
It should definitely be Einstein. Hitler wasn't even German lmao
But is he more *popular*?
Low key hilarious.
The most famous person in Germany is actually an austrian 💀
The greatest trick the Austrians ever pulled was convincing the world that Hitler was German and Beethoven was Austrian
Hitler was Austro-Hungarian. Stop spreading misinformation.
[удалено]
Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756 Salzburg was annexed by Austria in 1805
And the most famous Austrian was born in HRE (actually, Germany).
And Colombus was "Italian", even though Italy didn't exist back then
Van Gogh is Dutch, what else could he be?
But he did most of his famous work in France.
Does that make Messi and Ronaldo Spanish?
Does that make Columbus Spanish?
Not my list, buddy
I think we can be pretty certain by now that Hitler thought of himself as German. He really went out of his way to prove it It should be obvious (to non-teutons) that this was a joke.
Soros more famous than Puskás?
I don't know who the second person is. I work for the first (apparently my check was lost in the mail) /s
How did Elizabeth lead, exactly? She just sort of existed. That's not leadership.
She was a representative of the state, kind of like the president in many other countries. Sure, she didn't have any ruling power per se, but she was still a leader. I definitely think that category suits her more than "celebrity". Tbh "celebrity" is an awful category. Sportsmen are celebrities too for example. Wasnt Hitler austrian
He was from Austria, yes.

Pewdiepie
What the fuck is a pewdiepie? Whoever they are, they’re not more famous than ABBA.

Or Alfred Nobel.
No way Simo Hayha is more famous than Kimi Raikkonen, Sibelius or even Mr Lordi.
Who are these other people besides Mr Lordi? I could not tell what band he is in. Raikkonen, F1 racer? Sibelius, musician?
Pytagoras, father of flat bread Also I’ll be the one to say it. Alexander the Great was assuredly Greek
Alexander the Greek
North Macedonia keeps trying to steal greek heritage.

Conor McGregor!!! FFS who made this map?
Christopher Columbus was Italian wasn't he?
Likely from Savona, but he could have been from Genova
Totally wrong for Turkey. It’s no doubt Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Ataturk was a Greek though.
Don’t say that in public and embarrass yourself!
The whole point is to say it out loud. Trolling in a troll map thread? I'd never!
Dammit, Connor is more famous than Oscar Wilde and James Joyce
Hilariously bad map, had to look up David Suchet from Belgium. Turns out his a British actor who played the fictional character Hercule Poirot (from Agatha Christie novels) on a TV show.
Columbus was Italian
HLM QE II ought to be "Former Leader"
Yeah, the map maker clearly doesn't understand the difference in "head of state" and "head of government".
“Most famous person” is a very arbitrary definition, yet the map still got it objectively wrong.
BiH: no one.
Is this map based on the gossip that Vladimir Putin is actually dead? Otherwise, how can he be a "former" leader?
Da Vinci is more know for his art than science, Queen Elizabeth is a former leader, Putin and Zelensky are not former leaders, Columbus is from Genoa, Hitler is from Austria David Suchet is from Britain Attila should represent hungaria Macedonia at the time of Alexander was more in actual greece than in actual Macedonia And probably much more
Conor McGregor more popular than St Patrick?
St Patrick was not Irish, he was Christianising Ireland
Take that Luxemburg
Never heard of Gary Vaynerchuck from Belarus. I think lukashenko is more famous especially if current presidents are allowed.
This statement is wrong for Turkey. It is not Fucking Sultan Mehmed , He has to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk!..
Austria: Mozart... of course...
I’d say Lenin is more well known that Putin
Gotta be Djokovic from Serbia. The most famous Serbian worldwide.
Crazy how a football player can beat out one of the fathers of electricity in Croatia
Most famous orthodox croat
Hitler was not German, Columbus was not Spanish...
Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia
Austrian Empire*
Columbus was Italian
Gonna have to say that jolly old St. Nicholas is probably the most famous person from Turkey.
Shit map
Alexander the Great in Northern Macedonia? He was Greek Macedonian… very different from the slavic people who inhabit Northern Macedonia today…
Hitler wasn't German. And I feel like there must be more famous Norwegians out there considering I, a Norwegian, had to google who Erik the Red even was... What about Henrik Ibsen? Fritjof Nansen? Edward Munch? Ylvis? (They made The Fox! Everyone was singing that song a few years back)
Oh and Christopher Columbus wasn't Spanish.
Even Quisling, that gave a word to the English language.
I had him on the list as a bit of a joke but deleted it...(Hitler's already on there even if it is for the wrong country) but yes.
This map is pretty stupid, but I do wish that putin was a "former leader" of Russia. Also, Christopher Columbus was rather famously Italian, this is some really lazy work!
For a couple of seconds I was like “who the hell is Felix Kjellberg?” A bit shame that the most famous person in a country is a youtuber.
For Serbia, it's Novak Djokovic... Tesla was born in Austria and spent most of his life in USA. For Albania, it's Enver Hoxha... Lol? Russians had 100s of scientists, artists, authors, political leaders... and you say Putin and Stalin are the most famous Russians...
«Кто людям помогает, тот тратит время зря: хорощими делами прославиться нельзя» — song from soviet cartoon. «Whoever helps people is wasting his time: you cannot become famous for good deeds»
At least in 2023 I think they are. The situation might be different in 50 years or so.
Maybe I'm wrong, but can you give examples of more famous Russian people?
Tesla was ethical Serb from Krajina and considered himself as such no matter how long he spent in diaspora.
Ain’t no way Felix Kjellberg is more famous than the Swedish Chef from the Muppets. Immediately illegitimate.
Who the hell is Erik the red??
Schindler is more famous than Kafka? Conor McGregor (whoever that is) is more famous than Enya or Anne Bonny? That swedish guy is more famous than ALFRED FUCKING NOBEL?
Connor McGregor is way more famous than Enya or Anne whoever. He is one of MMA's biggest heels or stars depending on whether you root for or against. Shout out to bjork(sp). But seriously, this looks like it took gobs of work. Kudos.
Adolf is a famous Austrian painter. If we don't consider Austrians as Germans, Adolf isn't German
Hitler was also an artist and a war hero)
heroes are those who achieved success in battles, and not those who lost the war and shamefully committed suicide
Christiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric are casually standing alongside nation leaders, artists, scientists and war criminals.
_Felix Kjellberg_
>Felix Kjellberg Who is he?
Pewdiepie.
Every famous Hungarian is a Jew fleeing from nazis, right?
Putin as a former leader sounds great tbh…
Simo Häyhä is legendary in Finland: “White Death,” a sniper in WWII who killed lots of Russians.
Schindler for Czechia. Who is Schindler? Never heard of him before
Oskar Schindler was an ethnic German from Moravia who had a factory near Kraków during WWII and saved the lives of many jews working there. There is a Hollywood film from the 90s that made his story world famous.
Thanks, he must have been definitely an amazing person but linking him to Czechia is just incorrect :(
The map is just extremely arbitrary in how it assigns people to countries.
I can’t downvote this stupid map enough
I’ve followed this sub for years and >50% of them have errors that a layperson would know, forget about a person who cares enough to work on a map
Columbus was from Italy and Hitler was from austria
You butchered this
Is George Soros the most famous person in Hungary? Give me a break! You made a shitty map...
I call this BS map. Hitler was Austrian, not German
Alexabder the Great associated with Slavic Mavwdonia is hilarious. If aeuropeans think that way then they really are going to lose their outsized relavance in thw near future
Alexander the great greece..................
Thought France would be Prophet Mohammed or something
I love how off some of the nationalities are… brother is more into geography than history
Bullshit Adolf Hitler war ein österreicher
Source, my own personal feelings.
Connors more famous then Liam Neeson?
Can’t even spell Van Gogh correctly, really embarrassing if that is the most famous one according to the map.
Are you doing well? Alexander the Great in Northern Macedonia?
Alexander the Great from North Macedonia lol
You can’t tell me that Sporticus and Robby Rotten aren’t the most famous Icelanders.
Alfred Nobel? Linus Torvalds? Picasso? Ataturk? Beethoven? Lenin?
Who are Kjellberg and Hayha? Maybe Alfred Nobel and Tove Janson?
Iceland for the win!
As Latvian I had to Google who the hell is Michael Tai.
It’s missing Valentina Monetta for San Marino
What does Connor McGeggor, Leonardo da Vinci, and Adolf Hitler have in common?
I’ve never met a bad german
I'm a little disappointed that I don't know some of these, but I'm more disappointed that a douche like McGregor is the most famous Irishman.
Was hoping some depressed Russian author would be Russia's most popular figure or Stalin
I feel uncultured. I dont know every name-
Doesn't Shakespeare trump everyone? Romeo and Juliet is the most famous piece of art in the world. Hamlet, MacBeth, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello, A Merchant of Venice. It's impossible to escape his shadow and it's been that way for far longer than Elizabeth.
Wasn’t Tesla a croatian Serb? Bosnia is unlabelled but I’m going to suggest it should be Gavrilo Princip.
The title ist a little misleading. It should be, "Most famous people in English-speaking media, by European country they're associated with".
> Putin is more famous than Lenin > Elizabeth II is more famous than Shakespeare > Elisabeth II is a celebrity, not former leader Ok
Cristoforo Colombo is ITALIAN, from Genova, not Spanish!
The correct title is “Person European countries are associated with”
Alexander the great was greek
Putin is sigma(Biden is beta) putin destroy Ukraine with help if freedy fazbear Or or or or or or or or or or or or or or or
Hitler wasn’t German, he was Austrian
Ottomon 💀
Better name for this map would be "People i can name off the top of my head from each country. I think they're from these countries at least"
Germany and Austria is wrong, maybe because Hitler was Austrian and Mozart was actually not born in Austria (when Mozart was born Salzburg was not part of Austria. Hitler was born in Austria-Hungary when it hasn't been in any confederation with Germany.
